[Elecraft] PA for QRP rigs
Found an impressive HF PA, HVLA700Q, looks ideal for QRP rigs like K3/10, KX3 as requires only 10W drive for 700W output. They give attractive 5 year guarantee. Is it a silent PA, any experience? HI Everyone I already set up the audio problem. I turn OFF the TX ESSB and its done. When it is ON the audio distorts. [Elecraft] K? for remote rx only
I want to place Beverages at remote sites (for rx only), for 160m (useable on 80 and 40m), but it's not viable to use a K0 at each site. Is there a way to use a simpler system: perhaps a TRF on each band, up-converted to, say, 2.3/2.4GHz then down-converted to each band for my K3 at home. The transmit antenna will be at home and listen in diversity mode. I can see various issues like image and sensitivity cropping up, but I just wonder if this has be done. It would be nice if there was a lower cost K series simple remote receiver available. 73 David G3UNA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K3 HRD Ver 6
I use HRD with version 5.x right now and love the integration of the CAT control, Digitol and Log book. I have no problems with the software and it does everything that I want to do. I use it everyday and have purchased the the 6.0 version and have been waiting for a long time for it. However going thru the progression of the free versions of how they have fixed bugs that I see signficant improvement. Right now they have released a beta version of software similar to how Elecraft does as they need to get a larger test base to improve the product. I will be installing the beta version after I read more info on the HRD forum and reflector as I tend to wait a few days for dust to settle for any beta release. There are many options out there for HAM software so do your research and try them and have fun. [Elecraft] K3-KPA500-KAT500 problem SOLVED Part Deux
I wanted to close the loop on this in case others have a similar problem. I hooked up my newly assembled KAT500 to my K3 and KPA500, and when I pushed a band button on the kpa, the k3 and kat would change frequency but not the kpa. On transmit the kpa500 would fault. I went around and around on this, but it turned out to be the TopTen band decoder. Before the kat500 arrived, I had the k3 talking to the kpa500, no problem, along with the TopTen, PR6, and two XVs. But it appears that adding the kat500 to the mix was too much. So if you are having communications problems between k-line boxes, try dropping other things off the ACC jack on the k3 . There is evidently a mod for the TopTen to solve this issue, but I no longer need it or the LDG 600Pro autotuner (email me off-list if you're interested in buying them). Jack B. at Elecraft was emailing me until midnight, and David in Support called me the next day. Elecraft support is simply unmatched in my experience. [Elecraft] KX3 - inexpensive - 14 volt @ 4 amp P/S
Hi all you KX3 guys, After Chuck, KE9UW posted the link to this little 14 volt supply on eBay, I ordered one and said I'd report back after it came in. Got it this morning and measured the output voltage. Mine sits right at 13.8 volts, so I immediately hooked it up to the KX3. Full load with the KX3 key down putting out 12 watts, the thing sits pretty much rock solid at 13.6 and key up it goes back to 13.8 and stays there so it's got good regulation and will handle the rig nicely. The power cord is ferrite choked right where it comes out of the supply and the plug, even though it isn't a right angle one, fits the KX3's power jack perfectly. Next, I started looking for birdies using the KX3 with a 4 pickup loop I made with a BNC to double binding post adapter. The P/S box has an LED indicator on it and with the loop laid on the case near the LED, I got some pretty loud broadband noise that covered everything from 160-6 meters, but fell off and was undetectable with the loop 4 inches from the box. I ran through each band individually and could find no birdies attributable to this power supply in any ham band 160-6 meters. This was confirmed by shutting the supply down whenever I found noise or carrier type birdies and they stayed where they were. For less than 9 bucks this supply appears to be really pretty decent to carry along. It has at least a 3 foot AC cord that plugs into the box and the output cord is very close to 5 feet long so you have a lot of leeway in P/S placement. According to the specs shown on eBay, it has both over current and over voltage protection. I didn't short out the plug to find out if it shut down would blow an internal fuse as the supply is sealed and I didn't want to chance ruining it before getting a chance to take it on a trip. I've been using it this morning to power the KX3 on the bench and hanging out around 14.060 looking for QRP contacts. The KX3's voltage monitor is indicating right at 13.8 volts and .250 milliamps of current. Backlight is on, audio set to 20 with VFO noise reduction on, RX isolation on and the 20db preamp is on so 250 milliamps is just about right for current draw at 13.8V. Pretty decent lilttle supply for the money and RF wise, it's extremely quiet compared to some I've seen. Jim - W0EB I use this one...14 volts, 4 amps. Re: [Elecraft] Data form K3
Alfredo, Looking at the MMTTY information files (http://www.aa5au.com/gettingstarted/rtty_start8.htm), to operate using only the serial RS-232 port, you will need to install EXTFSK.dll. And the author suggests that only certain USB to serial adapters can handle the 5 bit Baudot code that is sent. So my thoughts are that you need two of the Simple Transistor Interface circuits shown on page 6 of those MMTTY instructions. One for PTT and one for FSK. You may ask why you need two of them when the K3 can use a PTT signal from the normal RS-232 cable, but the answer is that the FSK signal from MMTTY is on the TxD signal and the PTT can be either on RTS or DTR - *but* they must be on the same com port. You need one com port for MMTTY and another for K3 firmware loads or your logging program. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/22/2012 8:10 AM, Alfredo Vélez WP3C wrote: HI Everyone I already set up the audio problem. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Split in CW
Hi Don, Perhaps the problem is that VFO-B is in a different mode (maybe SSB or DATA). The simplest step to avoid this problem is to tap the A-B button (#3) twice. The double tap transfers ALL parameters from VFO-A to VFO-B. Then you can hold the same button to enter SPLIT and rotate the VFO-B dial to your desired frequency and begin transmitting. 73, Mike K2MK goldtr8 wrote I can not get my K3 to TX in split mode for CW. Put VFO A on the DX frequency. 2. Tap AB *twice* in succession. First tap will put the VFO A frequency in VFO B. Second tap will put all the other VFO A parameters [like mode] into VFO B. The K3 won't go into SPLIT mode if the two VFO's are in different modes. 3. Hold SPLIT. The little TX indicator on the right end of the display will now point down to B. 4. Select your TX frequency with VFO B. It takes way longer to describe it than to do it. You can listen on your transmit frequency by either holding REV [#2 on the keypad], or tapping A/B. Holding REV will swap A and B for as long as you hold it, when you release it, you're back to RX on A and TX on B. Tapping A/B will reverse the VFO's, tapping A/B again will put them back in normal split mode. If you have a P3, both VFO cursors will show up. VFO A is usually on the left because we almost always split UP. The P/S box has an LED indicator on it and with the loop laid on the case near the LED, I got some pretty loud broadband noise that covered everything from 160-6 meters, but fell off and was undetectable with the loop 4 inches from the box. [Elecraft] New Output Power Issue
All, Lately I've been receiving sporadic reports of low signal strength on my K3, s/n 288. So, today I put a meter on it and ran an FSK signal at 100 watts into a dummy load. To my amazing surprise, the meter only read about 60 watts out. I just upgraded last night to the latest firmware version (MCU 4.60, FPF 1.15, DSP 2.80), What should I begin looking at or adjusting to find the source of this issue? Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - inexpensive - 14 volt @ 4 amp P/S
Yup, it's a power supply that works with some Dell and Samsung monitors. Might be identical to the Ktec supply I got off ebay - pretty much same specs. Since it's meant to power a computer monitor, I'd bet it's pretty quiet in the RFI department as well. Look up Dell AD-4214N on Google and you'll get a host of replacement ones. Cheapest one I saw in the new department was $19 but like Bill said, you can probably find one at a ham (or other) flea market for next to nothing. Re: [Elecraft] New Output Power Issue
And you'll likely find the cause of your low signal strength is somewhere else, since 60 watts is only 2 dB - about 1/3 of an S-unit - below 100 watts. That difference is not usually detectable on HF given normal variations in propagation that go on constantly. 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Have you run Calibrate Transmitter Gain using the K3 Utility from Elecraft? What is the magic setting, I put it in split mode and change the frq to 1k up but it still does TX on RX frequency. There has to be something simple to do this. There is: 1. [Elecraft] TRX-Manager and K3
VE3NFK, I am trying out TRX-Manager with a K3. One issue I'm trying to resolve concerns delay or truncation while sending CW or PSK text via the Keyer or Levels text windows, with CW Internal setting enabled. Initially, it seemed like TRX was truncating the text after about 18 characters. It would stop sending the text. I later discovered if I waited long enough, several seconds, it would often send the rest of the text. This is with CW or PSK-31. Happens from either the CW keyer or Levels TT windows. I have no problem using the K3 utility to send the same text via CW or PSK. I wonder if there is a flow control or some other issue. Re: [Elecraft] I've been thinking!
Bob, Actually, the K3 is an SDR by all definitions I know about regarding SDR. The functions of the radio can be modified by firmware download. The fact that the K3 down converts to the 8 MHz IF range and then down converts further to 15 kHz to inject the signal into an A to D converter where the DSP is processed does not detract from the fact that it is an SDR. Yes, there is no PC involved, the processor is inside the radio. The KX3 is similar, the processor is inside the radio, but the conversion is from the RF frequency direct to baseband - in other words, the KX3 DSP is processed around zero frequency (unless the 8 kHz offset is invoked). So, I do not know your definition of SDR, but mine is quite literal - the function of the radio can be controlled by software (firmware if you choose). Download new firmware and the behavior of the K3 (and the KX3) can be modified. I believe my view is consistent with the generalized definition of SDR. Many hams will not agree because they believe that without a PC connected, it is not an SDR. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/22/2012 8:08 PM, Bob wrote: Not sure if this is a good question to ask or not? Again, a desktop 100 watt self contained SDR like the KX3 but in a K3 type form factor? Just food for thought, anyone, ANYONE? Thanks and 73. Just food for thought, anyone, ANYONE? Hmmm. Thinking can be a dangerous thing. It can lead to all sorts of financial damage. Although my KX3 is my first Elecraft experience, I've been following Elecraft and their product line for quite a while. It seems to me that the folks at Elecraft have pretty fertile imaginations and a willingness to follow through with ideas and turn them into great products. Given that, I'd suggest that they have at the very least discussed future whizz-bangery and have perhaps even reached the jotting down of ideas stage for their next radio. Having said that I tend to be somewhat agnostic about radios. For my purposes my F-817 was the best thing going for a very long time. It's now been replaced by my KX3. Maybe at some time in the future a radio that suits my operating style and needs better than the KX3 will come along and maybe that radio will be developed by Elecraft. Hopefully it will be but only time will tell. Re: [Elecraft] New Output Power Issue
Ron, With all due respect, this 40-watt power loss is noted in a watt meter connected directly to the ANT1 output on my K3, and then directly to a 300-watt dummy load. There is nothing else in between to cause a power drop. Where else would you recommend I look for the source of my problem, if not in the transceiver itself? 40 watts may only be about 1/3 of an S-unit, but that isn't the point. The point is that my rig is not performing as it should. I would like to fix the issue, in the most cost- and time-effective manner possible. If there are tests I can run to help isolate the problem, I'm open to suggestions. Certainly Ian. I would troubleshoot that sort of loss too. I only noted that it was not likely the cause of the reports you were getting of a low signals strength that you got from others. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ian Kahn - Ham Sent: Saturday, December 22, 2012 5:51 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] New Output Power Issue Ron, With all due respect, this 40-watt power loss is noted in a watt meter connected directly to the ANT1 output on my K3, and then directly to a 300-watt dummy load. Re: [Elecraft] I've been thinking!
Dave, I agree that the K3 is an SDR by definition, one of the many reasons I was an early adoptee. Having said that, is there a front end software package that emulates all of the K3 FW settings, provides a good SDR like screen such as PowerSDR etc, that has been developed for the K3? I know a lot of Flex users will roll their eyes at such a thought but as I have not come across one I was just wondering I prefer the K3 as it is but some may like the Flex way of operating. 73's Gary On 23 December 2012 14:23, David Gilbert xda...@cis-broadband.com wrote: Please explain why you think the K3 is not a software defined radio. [Elecraft] posting directions
Hello, Mailman: Last time I wanted to post a message on the reflector (and I do it very seldom), I couldn't figure out how to do it! I guess you have to go to this options link, but the descriptor for the link doesn't mention posting, it just says ...http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraftTo subscribe to the list, or to change your subscription options (like set mail delivery to 'off'), click here for the Options page. No mention of going here to post a message! Is there another way to do it? Is the posting option a secret, like the specials on my favorite restaurant's repertoire, never shown on the menu, but always available for the asking? It really should be quite obvious how to do it ... we are in the communications biz, aren't we? 73 and have a great holiday - Mike VE3GFN __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] I've been thinking!
That's a user interface issue, not a functional issue. Cell phones, for example, are SDRs ... some have buttons, some have keyboards, some have touch (i.e., swipe) screens, etc ... but they are all fundamentally SDRs. If you want to criticize the K3 because Elecraft didn't provide a different user interface, fine ... but there is no such thing as a SDR-like screen. The term SDR has nothing to do with the user interface. And no, I don't know of any front end package that would do what you suggest since there is no port on the K3 to access the data lines you'd need for it. The plug on it fits the KX3 and the open ckt voltage is 14 vdc exactly. http://www.ebay.com/itm/KSAS065-65W-Adapter-power-supply-Output- 14Vdc-4A-2-1mm-plug-NEW-FREE-SHIP- /261135859531?pt=US_Monitor_Power_Supplieshash=item3ccce8ff4b Chuck, KE9UW Lionel Trains, TCA, LCCA, LRRC aka Jack, BMW Motorcycles BMWMOA #224 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html - No virus found in this message.
