What is it about the Elecraft line that once you own one piece of their gear
it seems that it becomes for lack of a better word a Disease. One that
spreads to more and more of the Elecraft name on your desk like the Chicken
Pox there are so thick 8).

There is some good news here though it is subsiding some as I have at least
one piece of all their gear from K2 forward, until several more options come
out for the KX3 expected soon.

The bad news on the other hand is that Eric seems to have a constant stream
of new products in devolvement or to introduce, ones that people want and
cause a backlog to get one of whatever.

Well,

Yet another fault in my shack the K3 decided to stop putting out power over
12W this last night and came up with the Error 12V ERR so off to the
internet to see if it was an easy fix, well yes and no.

Turns out i is a common problem in older K3 mine is 891 not ancient but
older and as the previous owner was a contester probably worked hard. The
fault was the discoloured pins on P67B on main board from high current, The
older units did not have gold plated pins.

The entire rear end had to be disassembled but pretty easy. PA removed and
the PAIO board , anyway this is probably not new to the group but I must say
the modular design simplifies the repair. After replacing the six blackened
pins from parts left over from my K2 build all good. Not to mention the step
by step repair here

http://www.elecraft.com/manual/KPA3%20Power%20Connector%20Replacement.pdf

So now the K3 after reassembly back up and running.

Now back to fixing my K2 which hasn't even been on air yet.

Hi Fred and group,

Well yes I suppose it could be called a disease Hi!

I actually started not long ago when an unbuilt K2 with SSB kit was up for
sale and i felt I wanted to build something for a change, It is complete
but have some kind of transmit problem where the power drops off 15W at 80M
and progressively drops off to 10M. Strange !

Receiver side seems fine.

Have Gone over the adjustments to no avail suspect the Transmit Mixer
output may be low.

Anyway later on I bought the following also second hand

K3,P3 and KPA500 came up second hand on our VK classified site.

I've owned a lot of tranceivers over the years but the Elecraft gear id
different somehow, no small p[art to the support and enthusiasm of the
owners and company. Also like the idea of standard type connectors not
proprietory . Good old DB9's etc.

[Elecraft] K3/KX3 and RemoteRig

2013-01-13 Thread Chad Wasinger
Hi Group,

I’m wanting to try remoting my K3 via RemoteRig and wanted to see what
successful configurations others are using. I just built the KX3 last weekend
and wondering if anyone has used this as their controlling radio via RemoteRig?
I’m very familiar to the capabilities of the RemoteRig using a ts-2000 but not
sure with Elecraft products. Also, if I buy the K3/0, would it be possible to
update to a 10 or 100 watt radio in the future? Guessing so...

And last, does the RemoteRig interface allow for remote power on/off via the
power button on the controlling radio?

At our remote site we are using the LP-Remote board. Works great but a
little on the pricey side. Has a great software package included that allows
for macro's and frequency sensing to initiate a macro.

Subject: [Elecraft] Remote Operation

I am looking at installing a remote station using K3-K3/0 equipment. While
the radio portion of the system appears quite simple using Elecraft
components I am wondering if anyone knows of a good web site that discusses
using shipping containers as the remote building and how they control the
power side of the installations, such as turning equipment on-off, etc.

2013-01-13 Thread Chip Stratton
It is a bit of an addiction. I started Ham radio with an IC-7000. Next was
a KX1, then a K2, then a KX3. I still have the IC-7000 but really only to
use on the blue water boat, where the Icom is easy to interface to a Pactor
modem and where I would prefer not to put the Elecraft rigs at risk! I
would love to have a K3, but hard to make the case for it with all the
aforementioned E rigs in the armory right now!

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 problem

2013-01-13 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Following up on my High SWR problems (no response from Elecraft Support on
Friday to my email):
I disconnected the KAT500 and KPA500 and connected A4S feed-line directly to
the K3. It loaded beautifully and the internal tuner read 1.0-1. Good, not
the feed line or the K3…
Next I connected the KPA 500 (without the KAT500) and turned the K3 on….the
display froze a few characters into the welcome K4TM message and the power
button would not turn the K3 off - I had to turn the Astron 35M off to cut
power to the K3. When I turned the K3 on again, I get a blank screen and must
shut the power supply off to turn the K3.
I've had a Kenwood 520SE and a 570D and a TenTec Omni Vii - Drake TR-4 before
all that and I know the K3 is smarter than I am but I have never encountered
issues like this before! Any ideas?
Thanks for listening and any help that is directed my way!
And I guess I won't be checking into the Elecraft net today as a result.

 HELP, please.
 I have the K3-100, KPA-500, and KAT-100 (factory built tuner). I know
to activate the tuner before turning the K3 on (it does make a difference).
When I turned everything on for a schedule today, I am experiencing
high SWR and the K3 shuts down…also, when I go to tune the KAT500 and tap
the TUNE button, the AUTO begins to flash but when I key the mic (HEIL
MD-2) with audio it clicks and clacks for awhile and SWR drops to 1.2
When I then put the KPA-500 in operate, I get red lights for high SWR
and the amp goes to STBY with the FAULT light lit and the K3 shows FAULT 9
which the manual is excessive reflected power (high SWR). Well, the
KAT500 says otherwise and I am at a loss to figure it out.
My antenna is a Cushcraft A4S with 110 feet of high quality RG-8 and
everything was working just fine a week or so ago.
Last Sunday, I did turn the K3 on and my Vibroplex keyer was
connected. I came in about 30 later and noticed an ERROR message: ERR KEY
Apparently the Viproplex was keyed when I turned power on and I have
disconnected it - could this have anything to do with it?

  HELP, please.
  I have the K3-100, KPA-500, and KAT-100 (factory built tuner). I
know to activate the tuner before turning the K3 on (it does make a
 difference).
When I turned everything on for a schedule today, I am
experiencing high SWR and the K3 shuts down…also, when I go to tune the
KAT500 and tap the TUNE button, the AUTO begins to flash but when I key the
mic (HEIL MD-2) with audio it clicks and clacks for awhile and SWR drops to
 1.2
When I then put the KPA-500 in operate, I get red lights for
high SWR and the amp goes to STBY with the FAULT light lit and the K3 shows
FAULT 9 which the manual is excessive reflected power (high SWR). Well,
the KAT500 says otherwise and I am at a loss to figure it out.
My antenna is a Cushcraft A4S with 110 feet of high quality
RG-8 and everything was working just fine a week or so ago.
Last Sunday, I did turn the K3 on and my Vibroplex keyer was
connected. I came in about 30 later and noticed an ERROR message: ERR KEY
Apparently the Viproplex was keyed when I turned power on and I have
disconnected it - could this have anything to do with it?
Appreciate any help you can give.

[Elecraft] Paddle for the KX3 - Begali Adventure

2013-01-13 Thread Robert S. McCuskey
[Elecraft] Paddle for the KX3 - Begali Adventure

Chris, I have Begali Adventure #013. It is slightly heavier, has larger
paddles, and is about 50% larger than the Elecraft paddle. While both work
well, the Begali is smoother and more precise. The Begali also can be
positioned at an angle to the KX3 or removed and placed on its optional
magnetic desk stand. 73, Bob W7BV

For those who want to use the KX3 /p and for whom every gramm counts,

could you comment on the original paddle vs I2RTF's Adventure paddle?

I have the Begali Adventure serial #2. To me the Begali has much better
ergonomics than the Elecraft paddle. When attached it angles up not
pointing down and can be swiveled to any angle you desire. When I used the
KXPD3 I had to prop up the KX3 so my fingers were not hitting the table, not
so with the Begali. As to feel of the key. It's a BEGALI! For
weight size comparison see their website. I'm not a backpacking ham but to
me the size and weight difference is minimal.

I also have the KXPD3 and have the same observations.
I also ordered the Begali Adventure this weekend but it is backordered.
They should be available again in a couple of weeks.
Look forward to my next Begali to add to my Stealth and Sculpture

Thanks for all the suggestions from everyone. The only strange KX3 event
that happened is at one point I was tuning and when I would stop, the vfo
would continue to tune up (regardless of my tuning up or down just prior).
I turned the KX3 off/on and it did it again after a bit of tuning in one
direction, so I got my video camera on it, turned it off/on again and of
course with the camera's eye watching, it didn't do it again. Very strange
behavior though... Like it went into scan mode, but it was very slow and I
didn't turn on any scan function.

If anyone is interested, I made a video of my trip.

 Okay, a little redneck-engineering here:

I have 12 vinyl tiles in part of my house. They work wonders for

*know* I built a W5YI and a 20m dipole and, possibly, an EFHW using those

As with anything else, YMMV, but it's a quick, easy way to measure.

[Elecraft] For Sale - handled/rackmount brackets/panels for K2

2013-01-13 Thread John Evans - N0HJ

Greetings,

A long time ago, someone manufactured and offered a pair of
unfinished aluminum side brackets/panels for the K2 for those of us who
wanted to replace them with something with handles much like rack mount
equipment would have. I purchased these but do not know who made/sold
them. If anyone would have a need for these, I offer them up in the US
for $18.00 shipped in a padded mailer. The two side panels are drilled
for the mounting holes similar to the K2 side panels and includes a set
of screws.

Re: [Elecraft] For Sale - handled/rackmount brackets/panels for K2

If those are the ones like I have, they were made by David Saylor (WK4DS) of
Saylor's Machine Design, Trenton, GA. Not sure if he makes them anymore.

I have them for both my K2 and K3. They are made from 1/4 inch thick aluminum
and add some additional stiffness and weight to the units. The rack handle
feature was also on the end at the rear of the rig. They also provide
protection from bumping the knobs and connectors when moving the rigs around on
the shack bench or packaging for trips.

[Elecraft] K3 wont power on!

2013-01-13 Thread Rich
Hi all

Have been using new K3 (7049) for a few days and whilst turned on today it
just powered off, was not doing anything sat the time but sat in RX.

When I try to switch on I heard a relay click very softly but nothing,
checked psu (have other items connected to it that work) and checked power
cable with a meter, all ok there, fuse is fine in it.

Now when I try to turn on, nothing at all, not even the light click sound.

I have searched and not found anything on the groups so am hoping someone
might be able to point me in the right direction or some suggestions on
what to test?

Have had K3 at 100W and lower power too.

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 problem

2013-01-13 Thread Tom H Childers

In your original post you say that you turned on the KPA100 in the
K3. You should have the KPA100 turned off when using the KAT500. The
KAT100 is not needed when using the KAT500.

Make sure that when you are tuning with the KAT500 the TUNE POWER is
set to 25W. Below 20W will not give an accurate tune-up.
Instructions for adjusting the TUNE POWER are in the K3 manual.

Also, you should tune the KAT500 by using the TUNE button on the K3.
Instructions for using the TUNE button are also in the K3 manual.

My recommendation is that you check all of your KAT500 and KPA500
connections carefully by referring to the manuals for each one and
then read the tuning procedure for the KAT500 in the manual,
following each step carefully.

Good luck!

Elecraft work continues, so either call or eMail me directly.

[Elecraft] KX3 Switching Time

2013-01-13 Thread Fred Carvalho
Hi Guys, Happy new year to everyone.
In order to use the KX3 with an external amplifier in QSK mode, I need to
check how long it takes for the KX3 to transmit after Keyline goes low.
Is this delay configurable by menu ?
If it does not delay enough I will probably need to use TX INHIBIT line to
avoid hot switching at linear's side.

Thanks

[Elecraft] [K3] No-touch configuration for CW contesting

2013-01-13 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I've always been the sort who only wants to tune the receiver while
operating in contests. I hate to fiddle with DSP, IF shift, etc.
(that's fine for dxing, but the need here is different). I'm looking
for recommendations on configuration options that depart from the
defaults for things like AGC, or for operating suggestions that involve
minimal manipulation, such as a quick tweak of the width control when
switching from running to SP.

[Elecraft] How do I print a spectrogram file?

2013-01-13 Thread Alan Price

Guess the subject line says it all. I am trying to print a spectrogram file
and have not found the magic words so far. Anyone out there know them?

Thanks for the interest. The bracket/side panels have been spoken for.

Greetings,

A long time ago, someone manufactured and offered a pair of
unfinished aluminum side brackets/panels for the K2 for those of us
who wanted to replace them with something with handles much like rack
mount equipment would have. I purchased these but do not know who
made/sold them. If anyone would have a need for these, I offer them
up in the US for $18.00 shipped in a padded mailer. The two side
panels are drilled for the mounting holes similar to the K2 side
panels and includes a set of screws.

Some programs can interfere with your ability to get a screen capture.
DM780 is a fine example. If you have problems then shut down everything
else except your spectrum program.

I would recommend trying MWSnap,
http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html

It is a screen capture program that triggered with a hot-key combo that you
can change. It has a number of different capture mode.

I use it all the time at home and at work for documenting how to use
programs since it can be activated while a menu is down and you can capture
the menu(s). Best of all it's no free.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RF Gain Contol

2013-01-13 Thread Dale Boresz
Have you run the Calibrate RF GAIN procedure from the K3 Utility
(Calibration tab)? It will linearized the response of the RF gain
control. Also note that per the manual, this procedure should be run
*before* you Calibrate the S-Meter, so if you do run the RF Gain
calibration, you may wish to go through the S-Meter calibration steps
(detailed in the K3 User Manual) again as well.

FastStone Capture might be an interesting possibility for you as well.

[Elecraft] OT; HRD's Audio Monitor feature.

2013-01-13 Thread Richard Fjeld
FYI,
I haven't seen anything about this on the reflector, nor did I find it doing a
search, so here is a 'heads up'.

While I was in the HRD logbook, I noticed a 'audio monitor' tab at the bottom
of the screen. I clicked it and it opens a window that displays the audio
pattern in both transmit and receive. It has a peak hold feature, also. It
may be useful for making equalization settings. I was in a ssb qso at the
time. I will try it using digital modes next.
