Gene I agree that would be very useful for lofers on VLF as well. Don't know if that would be a problem or not with the XG3 just another add to an extremely useful tool to begin with. [Elecraft] headphone attenuators?
I'm guessing the impedance is wrong between my Bose QC-15 and the K3, I can't use more than 15 degrees of AF rotation or it blasts my ears unsafely. [Elecraft] Low Power on K2
Hi folk, I've dusted off my K2 and decided to QRP OP on CW now the bands are up and running. The RX is perfect and filters alignments and freq cal is spot on, or near perfect. Since I've had this radio the Max power output on 20 - 10m has been well below 10watts. In fact I can only get 5 watts on 10m and about 10wats on 20m with the CAL CURRENT setting all the way up to 3.5amps. At 2.00 AMP setting the radio only puts out 3 watts. So something is amiss. Thanks for the reminder! The in-line resistor in the headset was the answer! @ W0EB, the suggestion about the Radio Shack in-line volume extension was a great idea too. 73, Gary KA1J Gary, I have Bose QC2 and no problem. Re: [Elecraft] Low Power on K2
Dave, There is no single answer to low power out on the K2. The problem could be anywhere in the Transmit chain. Turn to the Appendix E section on the manual and use the RF probe (parts came with the K2 kit) to walk through the Transmit Signal Tracing steps being diligent about the setup instructions. The first test point where the RF Voltage is significantly lower than the Expected value is the output of the problem stage. Once that stage is located, we can help with detailed troubleshooting. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/26/2013 7:21 AM, DaveVK wrote: Hi folk, I've dusted off my K2 and decided to QRP OP on CW now the bands are up and running. [Elecraft] Remote Operation
Roger - W7VV, I have successfully set up my remote operation using K3 to K3 and Remote Rigs RRC 1258 MkII with cables purchased from Elecraft. I have recently also put into operation a West Mountain Radio Rigrunner 4005i for turning on/off power and individual station components. I think Microbit (that makes the RRC 1258s) also has a “web switch” which may also be a good option for power control. Setting it all up with my very complex (for me) Verizon router (which also supplies other functions like TV), would have been impossible with out the very able and terrific support provided by Brandon at Elecraft. My sincere thanks to him for providing terrific support. His support is the primary reason I’d recommend using the RCC 1258s (which work very well with the K3s/k3/0) or other rigs as well. I’d recommend anyone to call him should you have difficulties setting up your remote operation. Finally, having a dynamic name server (I think that’s what its called) (provided by Microbit) is paramount to automatically reconfigure your device access should your routers (public IP adress) change – which will occur while your away from your rig for any number of reasons - like power failures, etc. Good luck, Jim – W5AP __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Can Bluetooth be used to replace link between K2 and remote KPA100+KAT100
Harry, First, the signals required to operate the KPA100/KAT100 remotely are *not* RS-232 signals. They are 'hard-wired' signals to and from the base K2. Note that the connector is labeled AUX I/O - the fact that there is a DE-9 connector on any piece of equipment does not denote RS-232 unless explicitly stated, and the K2 is no different. Secondly, I believe you will encounter timing problems on the AUXBUS signal (the one wire K2 signalling line between the firmware ICs in the Elecraft gear. It will likely work up to 2 meters, but 10 meters is stretching it a lot. You would have to do extensive testing to determine that 10 meters of cable will work with no problems. The AUXBUS carries data that requires a response in a certain period of time and that timing is critical. The other internal signals used to connect the KPA100/KAT100 are not likely to cause problems unless the cable resistance is a problem. Those signals are: +12CTRL - this is a 12 volt line that is active whenever the K2 is powered on. 8R this signal controls the transmit/receive switching, Whether propagation delay would prove troublesome over a great cable distance remains to be tested. VRFDET -- This carries the measured power output from the KPA100 wattmeter back to the base K2 so power output control can be maintained. Again the resistance of the wire may be a factor in correct operation. Better to bring your KPA100/KAT100 inside in the warmth of the shack and just run the output coax(s) to the shed and antenna field. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/26/2013 12:16 PM, harry weston wrote: Hello. Re: [Elecraft] [XV432} LO Instability Problem
Hello Ian, Comments below On Fri, Jan 25, 2013 at 8:48 AM, Ian Greenshields ian.greenshie...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks for all the help and comments received so far, on and off reflector - I have to say the responsiveness and quality of help on this reflector is second to none! To summarise: 1. I have tried detuning L4, along with L3 and L5. L4 is very sensitive as is probably to be expected, L3 and L5 somewhat less so. The most stable point of L4 does seem to coincide with the peak in voltage at TP1, and detuning L3 and L5 doesn't seem to make much difference. The problem is that the voltage at TP1 can easily reach 4v or higher, and the LO is definitely less stable if I detune it to keep the voltage below 3v. 2. Is a voltage well above 3v at TP1 a problem? It seems to be just a detector diode circuit on the output of the LO, so I presume a fair amount of variation is to be expected. This is not a problem. You are correct there can be considerable variation from unit to unit and crystal to crystal. 3. The crystal seems mechanically stable in that tapping it doesn't send the frequency all over the place, but it is highly sensitive to being touched, which I assume is heating effect, Likely correct. The oven will make a very large improvement 4. The biggest single improvement was a suggestion to ground the can of the crystal. This is something very familiar to any K2 builder. I grounded the crystal can, K2 filter style, to the oven -ve pad, which was the closest ground point. Huge improvement. The frequency jumping has gone, although there is still significant drift, even long after warm-up. 5. I then tried readjusting L3, L4 L5 to see if detuning the voltage to about 2.5v at TP1 helped now that the oscillator seemed more stable. This seemed to be a backward step as the LO lurched down about 10kHz in frequency, started to drift back up, but then actually stopped oscillating. Restoring L3, L4 and L5 to the point where the voltage at TP1 peaks - about 4v - seems to be the most stable point the LO starts up fine. From switch on it drifts about 3kHz low, then as it warms up, it starts to drift HF until about 3 or 4kHz above the switch-on point. Tune for a peak 6. If my unit is normal, the oven would seem an essential. As I want to use the transverter on SSB, I can't really live with a drift range of 7kHz! 7. What is the view on grounding the crystal can? It does seem to help tremendously with the stability (and I mean the 'crystal mode' stability, just to differentiate from drift). I would order a second crystal along with the oven and first try it without grounding the can. If it still is necessary to ground the can then do it at the bottom near the pc board so that you can install the oven. I would also utilize the option to leave the oscillator and its oven on continuously. This option is explained in the manual. [Elecraft] K3 LONG delay in TX after TXINH removed (solved)
My TxInh circuit diode or'd various inputs together. What I did not do is put a resistor to ground after the diodes. In my setup TXINH is removed about 8 ms after the K3 is keyed. However, it looks like it takes the k3 about 450 ms or so after TXINH is removed for the k3 to make power output. This of course really messes up my cw output as it kills the first character. It also occurs with manual Tune from the front panel or with other modes, so not just on CW. I don't see menu items that would cause this. Anyone else seeing this? I 'think' this used to work, but I haven't tried old firmware to verify if my memory is correct. Re: [Elecraft] K3 LONG delay in TX after TXINH removed (solved)
Mark, It is good to hear that the resistor solved the problem. If you had to add a pull-down resistor, that is not a K3 problem, that is a requirement of whatever in your sequencer that is driving the K3 TX INH line. In other words, whatever is driving your TX INH line is not going to zero volts quickly enough. Since you have several units diode ORed for TX INH, it could be any one of them causing the situation. It is nice to hear that you have found a solution. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/26/2013 5:37 PM, Mark n2qt wrote: My TxInh circuit diode or'd various inputs together. [Elecraft] Using KAT500 With Antenna Switch
All, In the next few weeks, I'll be ordering my KAT500. In my shack, to save on feed line tangles, I use an MFJ 5-port remote antenna switch. Since I only have one feed line into the shack, and thus will only use one port on the KAT500, can I assume that I'll experience (expected) issues with storing tuning settings in memory? Re: [Elecraft] Using KAT500 With Antenna Switch
You might consider placing a simple two-port antenna switch in your shack, with two short jumpers to port one and port two on the KAT500. Then when you change from your dipole to the other antenna, it would take only a moment to set the feeline switch appropriately, and also select the required port of the KAT500. Once tuned initially for each antenna on its own port, a longer re-tuning should not be needed. 73, Doug - VE3VS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Using-KAT500-With-Antenna-Switch-tp7569164p7569165.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Using KAT500 With Antenna Switch
Ian, That is correct. Because of that situation, you might want to consider another coax run to the shack, one for the HexBeam and another for the dipole, and let the KAT500 do the switching. That way the KAT500 will remember the (per band segment) settings for each antenna - once it is tuned for each band segment, there is no need for re-tuning. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/26/2013 5:54 PM, Ian Kahn - Ham wrote: All, In the next few weeks, I'll be ordering my KAT500. Re: [Elecraft] ESSB Equalization
Hi Ron, Go the CONFIG:TX ESSB menu. Push the '1' key until VFO A reads, On or OFF. If it's OFF, push the '1' key again and you should see it read 'On'. Use VFO A to set the width you want. Then exit the menu. 73, matt W6NIA On Sat, 26 Jan 2013 14:32:06 -0800, you wrote: Recently I was reviewing the ESSB settings and noticed in both the KE7X factory manual, it says says there is an * setting for a separate equalizer just for ESSB. Re: [Elecraft] ESSB Equalization
I wrote a tiny program for adjusting the 3 EQ settings: http://udel.edu/~mm/ham/elecraft/ and click on the Elecraft logo for the K3 EQ program. This doesn't compare to elaborate programs that do much more, but might be useful for a simple EQ adjustment. Not tested on all OSes, so no guarantees. :-) 73, Mike ab3ap On 01/26/2013 06:48 PM, Matt Zilmer wrote: Hi Ron, Go the CONFIG:TX ESSB menu. Push the '1' key until VFO A reads, On or OFF. Yes, that would be a very good move -- IF you use more than one antenna on the same band. NOT particularly helpful if you don't. For example, I have a 6-port switch that automatically connects the right one of six single-band antennas to one port of my KAT500, with control of that switch by a band decoder. I run my SteppIR direct to another KAT500 port. Since the KAT500 always sees the same switched antennas on each band, it remembers the right settings and all is well. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

It works quite well too! Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft FTP server unreachable?
Problem resolved! Turned out to be an overly aggressive firewall in a router on my home network, about which I had forgotten since I set it up years ago. Loosened the screws on the firewall temporarily, successfully upgraded K3 firmware, and battened the hatches again once done. The K3 Utility help file did mention a possible need to negotiate with the firewall in the event of an FTP timeout, but I was originally thinking only of the firewall on the host PC for the K3. Just wanted to report back in case others should encounter a similar difficulty. 73, Mike, K8CN -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Elecraft-FTP-server-unreachable-tp7569154p7569171.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Strange K3 Utility Behavior
Having suffered COM port irritations for years, I took the advice of some on this reflector and bought an Edgeport/4 USB converter. I hooked it up to my XP laptop, and all seemed fine. The W2 Utility would talk through it. But when I ran the K3 Utility, it would find the K3 just fine, and I could select any of the tabs in the K3 Utility except Firmware. When I select Firmware, the K3 Utility crashes and vanishes. This is true for all ports on the Edgeport. When I try it with the KX3 Utility, the behavior is similar--though I can see the firmware tab, when I select CHECK FOR NEW FIRMWARE the KX3 Utility crashes and vanishes. Does anybody know what is going on? [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The weather has been quite mild this week. Some sun, a lot of rain, fair temperatures, and today - a little snow. In Oregon, if you don't like the weather wait fifteen minutes, is commonly true. Only this morning I had large fluffly flakes falling madly for ten minutes only to have the sun come out and see it melt in just moments. No matter what you may think it does not rain all the time here in the Pacific Northwest -- sometimes it snows. Propagation has been bumpy and intermittent. Band hopping was in order to keep a sked going. I may need to forge new territory (for me) and try 30 meters. Never can tell but it seems about the right 'trajectory' for the distance. I'll design and build a non-resonant trebuchet to launch my RF. Just add a few more rocks to the weighted end and fling an E/M field that much further. Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening. 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP relay help) Sunday 2300z (Sunday 3 PM PST) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 6 PM PST) 7045 kHz Stay warm, Kevin. [Elecraft] [KX3] Now that was fun!!!!!
Never had a rig that had 160M on it until now. Still don't have a 160M antenna. But after listening to the CQ160 CW contest for a while I had to try. So, hooked my KX3 up to my 80M double bazooka. The KX3AT loaded it up and I just spent two hours having fun on 160M. 15 contacts and 13 states with 10 watts. Am going to try to get some sort of wire up for the SSB event next weekend.
