[Elecraft] Strange SSB transmit fault on K2
Hello all. Yesterday I noticed a tx fault on my K2 in LSB. When set to 15W, between pauses in speech, the RF rose to 5W and made sort of grinding noises when heard on a receiver. Talking reduced it, but in speech pauses it built up again over a couple of seconds. SSBA set to 1 and SSBC 2-1, although changing these settings didn't seem to make any difference. I switched to a dummy load which made no difference either, so not RF feedback I don't think. There was also what sounded like a one-second tick in the 'modulation' - from the real time clock perhaps? Selected BAL on the menu, and re-adjusted R1 on the SSB board, but the erratic levels of RF (looking on a scope across 50 ohms) didn't really dip. Switched to USB, and all ok! Got a nice dip on R1. Back to LSB, and all ok now!! Anyone any ideas what was going on? Just used it on air and it's all fine again. BTW, the earlier fault where I couldn't get anything out on SSB, and occasionally mic-through-speaker feedback was me just leaving the K2 in in BAL mode by accident! Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 remote installation
Hi, Yes, the power supply is overkill but I don't have anything between tiny and noisy walwarts and that size. The power supply was evicted from the shack anyway because of the fan noise (acoustic, electrically that PS is very quiet), so it was just sitting there anyway. No other gadgets not visible in the display. Knut - AB2TC Bill Frantz wrote Knut - It looks good to me. Isn't that MFJ power supply a bit large for the power requirements of the equipment you have attached to it? Or do you have some high-power piece somewhere out of the photos? Hi Rick, The feature to save and restore keyboard messages and macros is already implemented in the current version of firmware (1.26/1.16) Located in the SVGA sub-menu are Usav and Urst which save and restore the messages, macros and Ctrl-Alt-S settings. Simply remove the keyboard and insert a thumb drive, then use Usav to save or Urst to restore. SVGASET.SAV is the binary file that is created/read on the thumb drive. 73, Paul -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/P3SVGA-Missing-Fn-key-display-on-P3-after-installing-P3SVGA-tp7572557p7572622.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] P3 lvl cal?
I have been using the following work around for this discrepancy. I calibrated the K3's S-Meter using the XG3. I also calibrated the P3 using the XG3 and found the same problem you see. I have reset the P3's Lvl Cal to show the same S-meter readings as the K3 *WHEN* the P3 is in [PEAK] mode. this way no matter what the span, an S9-20 on the K3 is about the same S9-20 on the P3. I'm sure this is not a scientific way to do it, but it works for me. ymmv -- 73 GB Sam K5OAI quote author=CX7TT Hello All, Question about the Lvl cal operation of the P3. Thanks Kurt, Nice photos! Could you please take a moment and tell us folks on the Reflector a bit about the remote KAT500 setup. Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Remote Installation
Hi, Sure, the wireless connection is using a Lantronix WiFi serial server. I think they have only model, but I don't have the model number in my head. I'll look it up when I get home. It supports two serial ports as you can see in the pictures. Note that the serial connection over the Lantronix and is my sole control of the box (other than disconnecting the extension cord for power). No Aux bus. I don't find this terribly limiting. Maybe somebody can find a way to make a bridge between the Aux bus and a serial port. The shiny box contains a homemade duplexer with a split frequency of 10MHz. It is currently used to feed an 80m and a 15m antenna from port 3 (the common port is on the back of the box and you can see the port 3 cable looping around to the back). It's working very nicely. Re: [Elecraft] Strange SSB transmit fault on K2
Ian, That smells of an intermittent carrier balance pot on the KSB2 board. When you rotated it, it started working, I suspect it has nothing to do with the LSB/USB selection, but simply 'went right' when you changed sidebands. You might want to obtain a replacement just in case it happens again. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/15/2013 5:26 AM, Ian Liston-Smith wrote: Hello all. Yesterday I noticed a tx fault on my K2 in LSB. Re: [Elecraft] P3 lvl cal?
Good points, all. Thanks Alan. 73, matt W6NIA On Sun, 14 Apr 2013 18:13:35 -0700, you wrote: Hi Matt, If they matched it would be a coincidence. For example, if the P3 is set to 45 kHz span, then each frequency point on the P3 display is about 100 Hz wide. If the K3 bandwidth is 2.7 kHz, then on a wideband signal like band noise or SSB, 27 times (14 dB) as much signal is getting to the K3's S meter as gets to each frequency point of the P3. So you'd expect the average signal level on the P3 to be about 14 dB (2 or 3 S-units) lower. To illustrate this without a P3, try this: Set the K3 to the normal 2.7 kHz bandwidth, tune in an SSB signal and note the S meter reading. Now change the K3 bandwidth to 100 Hz and note the S meter reading. It will be much lower. The main reason is that the effective bandwidth of the P3 is narrower than the K3, so more of the signal gets through to the K3 S meter than a single pixel on the P3 display. For that reason, the signal or noise level on the P3 can appear quite a bit lower than on the K3 S meter. [Elecraft] PR6 Clarification
I'm just getting going on 6m with my K3/KPA500/KAT500. I'm getting ready to order a M2 6M5XHP. My feedline consists of 150ft of LDF5-50 to the tower then about 40ft of Buryflex in the tower run and various pigtails. So my feedline losses should be relatively low. Based on various threads I've decided to go ahead and get the PR6 but want to make sure I understand how to use it. It appears that it is bypassed completely by the K3 on the transmit path to the KPA100 which then goes to the KPA500 and KAT500 then to the antenna. On receive the path back from the KPA/KAT is passed thru the PR6 automatically as long as it is powered and the RXAnt is selected for 6m. So no fancy additional cabling required other than Power/Digout1 and the RXin/RXout pair. My Beverages will just connect now through the PR6 supplied input. All good? Re: [Elecraft] PR6 Clarification
Sounds good! I would suggest ordering the largest 6m yagi you can fit on your tower. If a 6M5XHP is the largest you can swing around, then you should still do very well on multi Es from your prime location there on the East Coast! I hope you can get it all running next month so you are ready for DX by June 1! It also looks like you have a clear shot (no ground clutter) to the west, so please let me know when you are set up with the new yagi and PR6 and I would be happy to run a JT65A mode sked with you during your moonset ;-) GL and VY 73, Lance On 4/15/2013 9:50 PM, Jim Miller wrote: I'm just getting going on 6m with my K3/KPA500/KAT500. Re: [Elecraft] (KX3) Voltage display
Rob, Are you using the power connector supplied with the KX3 or some other? It sounds as if the power supply is being disconnected and you are seeing the typical voltage from the internal NiMH batteries. If you are not using the power cable supplied with the KX3, check to be sure the power plug is a 2.1mm rather than a 2.5mm. If you need to test the diameter, and have access to some #12 and #14 house wire, the #12 will not fit into a 2.1mm plug, but the #14 will. If the #12 wire fits into the plug, it is a 2.5mm and will make only intermittent contact with the KX3 2.1mm jack. If your power cable is fused, check the fuse for looseness. 73, Don W3FPR On 4/15/2013 6:53 PM, Rob May wrote: I've been having a weird problem with my KX3. Despite being right in front of me, I often wondered why the band noise sounded strange, and finally realized I'd left the crystal filter phasing control in an unnatural position. [Elecraft] Fw: The Rabbi and the Pope
Subject: Fw: The Rabbi and the Pope Please be kind enough to remove all names and email addresses if you forward this to others. Use BCC when addressing messages. This says NO to spammers - Thanks! The Rabbi and the Pope Around the year 900, the Pope decreed that all the Jews had to convert to Catholicism or leave Italy. There was a huge outcry from the Jewish community, so the Pope offered a deal: he'd have a religious debate with the leader of the Jewish community. If the Jews won the debate, they could stay in Italy; if the Pope won, all the Jewish people would have to convert or leave. The Jewish people met and picked an aged and wise Rabbi to represent them in the debate. However, as the Rabbi spoke no Italian, and the Pope spoke no Yiddish, all agreed that it would be a silent debate. On the chosen day, the Pope and Rabbi sat opposite each other. The Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. The Rabbi looked back and raised one finger. Next, the Pope waved his finger around his head. The Rabbi pointed to the ground where he sat. The Pope brought out a communion wafer and a chalice of wine. The Rabbi pulled out an apple. With that, the Pope stood up and declared himself clearly beaten, and said that the Rabbi was too clever. The Jews could stay in Italy. Later the Cardinals met with the Pope and asked him what had happened. The Pope said, Firstly, I held up three fingers to represent the Trinity. The Rabbi responded by holding up a single finger to remind me there is still only ONE God who is common to both our faiths. Then, I waved my finger around my head to show him that God was all around us. The Rabbi responded by pointing to the ground to show that God was also RIGHT HERE with us. I pulled out the wine and host to show that through the perfect sacrifice, Jesus has atoned for our sins, but the Rabbi pulled out an apple to remind me of the ORIGINAL SIN. He beat me at every move, and I could not continue. Meanwhile, the Jewish community gathered to ask the Rabbi how he'd managed to win. I haven't a clue, said the Rabbi. First, he told me that we had three days to get out of Italy, so I gave him the finger. Then he tells me that the whole country would be cleared of Jews, but I told him emphatically that we were staying right here. And then what? asked a woman. Who knows? said the Rabbi. He took out his lunch, so I took out mine. I still have no idea what happened after that. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Fw-The-Rabbi-and-the-Pope-tp7572641.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] PR6 Clarification
Hi Jim - You are well on your way to 6m success with the K3/KPA500/KAT500/PR6 line up. However, there is one more issue you will need to address in your cabling system. The K3's Digout1 signal is asserted on the PIN 11 of the AUX cable. That presents a conflict with the KPA500 INHIBIT on PIN 11 on the cable bus between the K3, PR6, KPA500, and KAT500. PIN 11 needs to be interrupted before passing the Digout1 signal onto the KPA500 and KAT500, yet still sending the PIN 11 Digout1 signal to the PR6. I purchased a HD15 male/female port saver adapter from the Web ($5) and removed PIN 11 with pliers. Install the Y cable at the K3 ACC port, then connect the PR6 to one side of the Y cable. Install the PIN 11 interrupter port saver adapter on the other side of the Y cable and attach the HD15 cable connections to the KPA500 and the KAT500. I hope this helps. 73, Terry K4RX I'm just getting going on 6m with my K3/KPA500/KAT500. All good? I believe the Key line interrupter interrupts pin 10 rather than pin 11 after reviewing the K3 and KPA manual. I don't use the Pin 11 option on the KPA (it's disabled) rather use the keyline interrupter and RCA jack cabling to interface all the keying interruption which includes my antenna switch. Re: [Elecraft] PR6 Clarification
K4RX's inhibit line inhibiter for pin 11 is the same idea as the keyline inhibiter for pin 10. However, it is not really needed because one can set the KPA500 INHIB IN menu to DISABLE so a low on pin 11 will not inhibit the amp accomplishing the same thing as pulling pin 11 from the connector. Of course pulling the pin is a fail-safe solution. What is really needed is some logic that blocks pin 11 from the KPA for 6m (assuming you want the amp on for 6) and passes it for the other bands. That way you could inhibit the amp on, say, 30 m or other bands where there might not be a good match. I worked up a circuit to do this once upon a time and should dust it off again. 73, Fred Fred Cady fcady at ieee dot org The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration, and Operation Second Edition BTW, www.Lulu.com has a 20% discount (APRILBOOKS13) good this month and 15% off (POURING) until April 19th. -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft- boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Miller Sent: Monday, April 15, 2013 7:25 PM To: Terry Posey Cc: Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] PR6 Clarification I believe the Key line interrupter interrupts pin 10 rather than pin 11 after reviewing the K3 and KPA manual. Re: [Elecraft] PR6 Clarification
Ahh, looking back at my notes I see the other solution would be to make the KPA500 INHIBIT IN be per/band. But you would still have to take care of not turning on the PR6 when DIGOUT1 is low with some external logic if you cared about that. I'm not getting the importance of a Pin 11 solution. I just disable the KPA500 sensing of that pin by the menu selection. I don't see the need for it. I'm definitely running the KPA500 on 6m. If for some strange reason Pin 11 is asserted it just causes the KPA500 to be inhibited, not turned on, which is a failsafe direction. 73 jim ab3cv On Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 9:50 PM, Cady, Fred fc...@ece.montana.edu wrote: Ahh, looking back at my notes I see the other solution would be to make the KPA500 INHIBIT IN be per/band.
Hi Jim, What I'd like to be able to do is to disable the amp on some bands (e.g. 30 m), by asserting (low) DIGOUT1 (and setting KPA500 INHIB IN to ENABLE) but to have the amp enabled for 6m when DIGOUT1 is low to turn on the PR6. I'm just lazy, that's all. Plus it's fun to think about! I'm running a very similar setup, but with 350 ft of 7/8-in Heliax to a 3-el SteppIR with the added 6M element. The SteppIR works pretty well on 6M, and the nature of my tower installation makes it impractical to add a better one. Based on various threads I've decided to go ahead and get the PR6 but want to make sure I understand how to use it. I've owned an ARR GasFET preamp for nearly 10 years, and added it at the RX antenna patch point, with relays to switch between the preamp and my Beverages, probably in the same manner that the PR6 does. My setup also works fine. Yes, it would be about 1dB better at the top of the tower, but it would cost me PLENTY to put it there, given that 99.5% of my operation is very competitive contesting with full legal power. :) I'm in a dense redwood forest, so EME is not in my future, at least at home, but I've made lots of 2 and three hop Es QSOs, mostly CW, and some pretty long MS QSOs with FSK441. One of the great things about the KPA500 is that it's happy at full power (about 500W on 6M) on keydown modes. If you're running the 6M antenna through the KAT, be sure to put it on the ANT1 output, which has the lowest return loss, and make sure there's nothing else in the path that might be adding some return loss. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] WANTED - Buddipole Low Voltage Alarm
Keith, Your KX3 has a built in low voltage warning -- you can set it to 11.5 volts or so and simply turn the rig off once you see the warning. At that voltage you will still have about 10% battery capacity left (assuming you are talking about a LiFePO4 battery. Maybe we can convince Wayne to put in a Shut Off voltage in addition to the warning voltage. That could be set to 10.0 volts then. The Buddipole low-voltage cutout is in hard to beat -- small package, inexpensive price, sad they can't keep making them. Probably didn't sell many though. 73, Bob, WB4SON PS: PowerEx sells one for about $90 -- much higher current rating, but it could be adjusted to cut out where you want. Its a LVD-35. PPS: Some of the alarm companies sell them to prevent damage to the Alarm Panel SLA battery. Typical cutout is 10 volts which is fine for a LiFePO4. An ELK-065 comes to mind. About $20. Not packaged nicely. Just another alternative. On Mon, Apr 15, 2013 at 11:13 PM, N8CEP tu...@zoominternet.net wrote: I purchased a very nice battery for my KX3 from Buddipole. [Elecraft] Leaving TP2 connected?
Quick question regarding my 3000+ K2, I'm struggling to get the filters just right so can I leave TP2 connected all the time? So, I haven't noticed any adverse affects. Re: [Elecraft] Leaving TP2 connected?
The reason you are not supposed to do this is that the third harmonic of the BFO is picked up and amplified, producing a spurious output just above the high end of 20m (I've forgotten the exact frequency). I don't know about problems on other bands. I recall that I checked and the spur was much stronger with the cable in TP2. Especially if you are using a KPA100 or (worse) an external linear as well, you shouldn't do this!
