[Elecraft] K3EXREF query

2013-07-20 Thread Brian Alsop

Anybody install with with the subrx in place?

My recollection is that the installing the screw with the lockwasher on
the panel side of the master oscillator PCB was a bit tricky.

Also the extra hole for the SMA connector is already in use here for
something else.

I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a TMP male/female cable that I
could hook up to from the K3EXREF board to the aux BNC antenna male TMP.
 I don't use that.

I don't use xverter BNC's either.

Any other suggestions for locating the K3EXREF SMA end.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and JT65 (aka digital modes) ALC problem

2013-07-20 Thread Stephen Selberg
Hi Stephen,

I used my kx3 for jt65 once when I first got it to see how it would work. I
can't recall what the ALC looked like tho. I bought a special signalink USB
and the jumper board to store in my kx3 go case so i wouldn't have to
disconnect all the cabling in the shack with the main signalink. As time
permits today, I'll pull everything out and set it up and let u know how
it looks on my end.

As far as the data A, I believe from what I read in the manual that it
turns off all tx/RX equalization as well as compression. I also recall
reading somewhere with the signalink USB, if the jumper board is not
installed, the mic bias menu setting should be set to off. If u have the
pre made jumper board installed mic bias can be left to on. Since u have
yours connected to the computer, I'm not sure how that setting will affect
operations.

Sorry for all the typos and poor syntax. Writing all this while my
14-month-old is running circles around me getting into everything hihi

I guess I didn't change the computer drive enough.
It appears that ALC goes to zero when over driven? Feature or problem?
Things still seem to work as I made a 20M 4W PSK31 QSO (poor copy on
 other end - running 20W).
And a couple of JT65 contacts...

Question, does DATA mode use the TX/RX EQ? It would be nice to leave the

Re: [Elecraft] K3EXREF query

2013-07-20 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Brian, the K3EXREF installation manual (available on the Elecraft web site)
shows the installation with the subreceiver in place. It's quite simple. The
only option that must be removed is the K144XV if your K3 is equipped with
it.

You are right that one must be careful to not lose the split lock washer
between the KREF3 and the front panel, but testers didn't find the process
very difficult to do.

What a couple of people who suffered hand tremors reported doing to avoid
that lock washer falling off was to put a small drop of petroleum jelly or
soft candle wax on the screw after placing the lock washer on it. That kept
the washer from easily falling off while they repositioned the KREF3 board
and started the screw threads into the fitting on the front panel shield.

I can't answer your questions about a M-F TMP cable or using the other
available openings instead of the REF connector opening.

2013-07-20 Thread bill conkling
Try using a 1/4 by two inch strip of paper with a small hole near one end.
Place screw with washer thru hole in pcb, now place lock washer on screw and
thread the screw into the hole in paper strip. Strip will hold all together
while starting screw into back of shield. Once screw is started, just pull the
paper out and tighten screw. The tiny scrap of paper that falls out won't hurt
anything and you won't spend time locating washer that fell in otherwise.

[Elecraft] K2 #7446 is alive and made my first QSO

2013-07-20 Thread Stan AE7UT
Just finished aligning my K2 last night.
Made a nice QSO 1,000 miles away on 5 watts.
It was great getting a 599 report on my new K2.

One thing that seems a little different is the volume I'm getting.
I have a K2 someone else build that is fully loaded. It is much louder
on receive than this one. I have the RF gain all the way up and the AF
gain 3/4 of the way up to get a good volume.
Is that normal for a base K2?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #7446 is alive and made my first QSO

2013-07-20 Thread Don Wilhelm

Stan,

That is *not* normal unless the bands are totally dead and there is
little atmospheric noise.
You should easily hear the receiver internal noise with that high AF
gain setting. A normal AF gain setting is a 9 to 11 o'clock position.

Take a look at transformer T7 - the red winding should be closest to U12
- it is sometimes mounted backwards.
Double check the position of the D40 and D41 diodes soldered on the
bottom of the RF board.

If those checks do not reveal anything incorrect, you may have to do
some Receive Signal Tracing as detailed in Appendix E of the manual.
For that, you will need a strong signal generator - the XG3 set for 0
dBm is greater than the 0.14 volts input asked for by the manual, so a
potentiometer (200 to 500 ohms) across the generator may be necessary,
or use a 3 dB attenuator.
If you do not have the XG3 or other suitable RF generator, you can build
the simple crystal oscillator from the circuit shown in the manual.

Note when Signal Tracing, when you get to the check at the output of
U12, you will not be able to achieve that saturation level unless you
lift one end of the D40 and D41 diode pair. The 'expected values' in
the manual were generated before those diodes were added to the design.

You are correct. DATA A does turn off compression and the equaliztion.
There have been a few notes going around the last few days about PSK-31

review of them. They are applicable to all digital modes. I know I

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RX Audio

2013-07-20 Thread Gary Gregory
Trevor,

With the 8 band EQ settings I think most operators either forget or are
unfamiliar with how much the received (perceived?) audio can be tailored to
the individuals hearing.

Sure you can use stereo headsets (which I do) and or use the internal
speaker provided. Again, audio is really dependent on the individuals
hearing and this of course varies widely. I have Tinitus (no, I am not
complaining, well, too much) and this reduces somewhat my ability to hear
many of the frequencies others might hear but having said that, the K3
produces good quality audio IF you take the time to adjust the audio via
the EQ, AGC, Slope and other subsets as detailed in the manual.

I doubt any internal speaker in any of the current crop of offerings will
produce a full rich sounding audio and I will leave it to others to
comment on why as I think most of us understand why anyway. The CM500
headset does a real nice job for me and I have also used stereo computer
speakers as well. Both work well and the internal speaker is OK but as
others will testify it is not designed or intended (my opinion only) to
produce broadcast quality audio. It is a communications device.

After market Pro Audio gear from Behringer and such used for transmit
doesn't help anyone's receive audio in my view, it just consumes bandwidth
and on the P3 it does not look real flash either. I have tried changing the
settings in the EQ when listening to these operators and it does improve
the audio quality somewhat but at the expense involved for those using
Pro-Audio gear I don't see the bang for your buck justification at all.

Just my rambling thoughts on the subject...YMMV...:-)

Regards,
Gary (Deaf as a post)

someone point me to a good guide on how to set the RX up to remove the
 harsh sounding audio.

I will mainly be using a headset as DXing is my main interest.

  Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K3 #7554 dead, please help!

2013-07-20 Thread Mike K8CN
Martin,

I presume you have also finished building a K2 since you posted in response
to Stan, AE7UT's earlier comment about his K2's receive sensitivity?

Did you perform all of the preliminary alignment steps in the Alignment and
Test, Part II that should yield a working 40 meter receiver?

Please clarify where you are in the overall test procedures for the K2.

Thanks, and 73,
Mike, K8CN

Re: [Elecraft] KX3: automated sideband nulling routine using XG3..

2013-07-20 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Dave, using *any* signal generator, the whole alignment procedure takes
perhaps 10 minutes. Much of it is automated now and the code to do that is
embedded in the KX3 software. Basically you spend five minutes setting up
the controls, and then you work across the bands pushing a single button on
each band to perform the alignment.

FAO: Elecraft...

I don't supose for one moment, that there could be a version of that Other
Sideband Nulling software, that could be persuaded to work with more
normal signal generators, from the likes of HP/Agilent, RS, Marconi etc,
via GPIB or Serial (using VISA call's for example?)

Else. Are all the commands that the software uses with the XG3
documented, so an interface (with virtual COM port) could be written to
do that? (Emulate the XG3, while passing on the frequency/level data to
the alternative sig gen.)

Regards.

 Hi All,

I got a copy of the software for running the ?OSB nulling from
 elecraft the other day, and

it seems to work well. ?It does not have a very informative U.I. ?All
you do is set the com ports for the generator and the radio, and then
turn it loose. ? About 20 or so min. later it proclaims that it is
finished. ? I have done 2 radios so far, and might get a 3rd one done
this weekend at our QRP and home brewers meeting if one of the guys
 brings his rig.

The hardest part was getting my OLD elecraft serial cable driver to
play nice. ? I got the thing with my K3 S/N 185, ?and I think it is a
'prolific' ?USB chip.. ?I think the new cables are FTDI or anyhow
 something with better driver support

I had to e-mail Elecraft for the software, and they e-mailed the
software with a note on how to run it. ?I don't think that they are
ready to release it, although I don't see that it would be an issue to
do so in is present version of the software. ? ?Maybe if ?enough
people ask for it, they might put it on the web site for download. ?
Who knows, maybe a few more people will want to get an XG3!

[Elecraft] K3 RX Audio

2013-07-20 Thread Edward Dickinson III
Good quality transmit audio, be it from outboard processing gear or other
needn't consume excessive bandwidth, though some does. Nor does it need to
be excessive in any of its characteristics.

I appreciate quality receive audio beyond that of simply 'communications
quality.' I routinely run my K3 filters on receive at 2.4 and 2.4 kHz and
roll off the high end to avoid sound that I don't care to hear. There are
occasions where I open it up to 2.8 or 3.0 kHz when signal to noise ratios
are high and the audio I am listening to justifies it. Usually those cases
are few.

I don't pretend to know all the issues in the receive chain of audio, but I
do think improved audio can be found for not a lot of cost in terms of
design and components.

It seems the dressed down style of Silicon Valley is now near ubiquitous.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2013-07-20 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,
I got caught up on a few old net reports and got out to enjoy the
sun. It has cooled such that each morning in am in heavy fog so the
trees mine it and rain. Today was a little different because it rained
not only under the trees but all over. It is good to get the moisture
so the fire danger does not grow any worse. Logging has stopped for the
dry season so it is very quiet up here. Soon the elk will be bugling.
Between them and the coyotes I could record a nice background track.
The veeries will add their mixed rising and falling notes and I could
catch the nighthawks in a series of their noisy power dives.

Propagation was alright until the latest CME. Yesterday I heard a
lot of noise and little else. Another influx of ions is due this
weekend so conditions may be poor tomorrow. But you never can tell.
One week forty meters is tough while the next it is much nicer. If the
ion storm is done soon conditions tomorrow may be very good indeed. If
we don't get on the air we will never know.

Please remember to zero beat the NCS. It is tough trying to find you
when you are deep in the skirts of my filters or well off to the side.
I have used RIT to try to improve each caller's signal but chasing all
over the place is not easy while I am logging too.

Please join us tomorrow afternoon and evening.
