All Elecraft station also - K3/P3/KPA500/KAT500 normally on the desk - KX3 for portable use and during power outages or (heaven forbid) if the K3 develops a problem (only once in 3 years and it was MY fault). Antennas at the home QTH are a Cushcraft A3S tri-bander at 35 feet, nondescript homebrew fan dipole at 35 feet for 40, 30 and 17 meters, ground mounted Butternut HF2V with loading coil for 160/80/40 (KAT500 tunes it on everything including 6 meters) and a quarter wave inverted L sloping upward from 30 to 50 feet on 160 meters. Portable antennas consist of a PAR EndFedZ 40-20-10 wire, a homebrew take-apart vertical that breaks down to mostly 1 foot sections (MFJ 6' telescopic whip is a bit longer) and uses a buddi-pole coil and a 21 foot non-resonant vertical that's collapsible but still too long for convenient portable carry. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Front Panel Problem
This is a known issue with older K3's. The contacts between the PC Board and the front panel and lose conectivity. I do not recall all the details, so don't quote me, but I believe the materials were either dis-similar, or just not a reliable material.Elecraft started using silver plated contacts later in the production of K3's. You can take it apart, and clean them, but this will re-occur. - I have used a product called Stabilant 22, not in the K3, but in my work on computers. This is a very good product, and not only cleans the contact, but prevents them from corroding again. The down-side is it leaves a sticky substance on the pins, which is why they do not corrode, but it will pick up other dirt making the next cleaning more difficult. - You can replace the pins, as these are available from Elecraft (Beware, as there are 40, I think) - You can send in your radio, and they will replace them. Fortunately my K3 was sent in by the previous owner, and mod'd up to the current level, which included the pin replacement. Found out rotating the knobs works as expected, but the tap and hold functions do not work at all. None of the other buttons on the front panel work as expected except the POWER button. Tapping many of the buttons has no effect, but others cause unrelated functions to execute. For example, tapping the PRE button causes NTCH to turn on or off. Tapping the ANT button causes NR to turn on or off. Tapping the SPOT button or AFX button causes the SHIFT/LO control to switch from SHIFT to LO and the HI/WIDTH control to shift from HI to WIDTH. This behavior causes me to believe the Parameter Initialization procedure needs to be activated, but I can't get it to initiate because the SHIFT/LO control doesn't work as expected. Oops! I just got it to work by holding the SPOT button while tapping the POWER button. Weird. Anyway, I restored the K3 Configuration but none of the front panels problems have been resolved. Now when I fire up the K3, none of the front panel buttons and dual-purpose controls work, except volume and VFO A. I thought maybe the menu parameters got altered somehow preventing the firmware from operating correctly, so I tried to do a parameter initialization. But that failed because the Shift/Lo knob is not working (The other dual-purpose knobs: Hi/Width, Speed/Mic, and Cmp/Pwr don't work either). Therefore, I figured the contacts between the front panel and the radio had become corroded and weren't making a good electrical connection anymore. So, I removed the front panel and inspected the pins. Everything looked normal and I put the radio back together again. Still not working. Anyone want to make suggestions on what else I should try? I can communicate with the radio using the K3 Utility and I did reinstall the MCU firmware, DSP firmware and front panel firmware. None of that helped. I still think there must be a communication problem between the front panel and the radio, but don't know how to fix it. Suggestions? [Elecraft] RemoteRig + K3/0 setup with microphone
This must be in a manual someplace, but I can't find it. As my control rig, I have RemoteRig with a K3/0, sitting for the moment on the same table, plugged into the same router. For some reason, the RemoteRig for a *K3 used as the control station* comes with a cable that has a microphone connector. The cable set for the *K3/0* *used as the control station* has no such cable, so one must assume you are supposed to use the K3/0 front panel mike connector (since the rear panel mike connection is used for RemoteRig.) Nothing happens when I do that. No transmitted audio from the local (control) site. I would plug into the control RemoteRig box, but there is no obvious place to do that. I can't tell the K3/0 to use the front panel mike and high bias, because the remote K3 follows every menu change I make at the local k3/0. I feel pretty dumb, but what is the answer. Re: [Elecraft] RemoteRig + K3/0 setup with microphone
Hi Brian, Try temporarily disconnecting the RS232 cable from the K3/0 to the RRC (before power-on). That should allow you to access to the menus for the K3/0 instead of the remote K3. If your headset has a 1/8 plug, a possible alternative would to use a barrel to connect it to the plug that's supposed to go into the K3/0's rear mic connector (i.e. connect it directly to the RRC, bypassing the K3/0). The JMP-1 jumper inside the RRC will supply bias. 73, ~iain / N6ML On Mon, Aug 5, 2013 at 8:32 AM, Brian F. Wruble bwru...@gmail.com wrote: This must be in a manual someplace, but I can't find it. Brian, I am in a somewhat similar situation, and the two problems may be related. I sent the following message request to Elecraft Support and received the accompanying answer from Brandon. I still have no information on this MOD to give 8 VDC to Pin 6. My follow up requests to E-Support have gone unanswered. Hopefully both of us can get some answers. de Milt, N5IA == Original Message Subject: k3/Remote Rig Date: Fri, 14 Jun 2013 17:34:16 -0700 From: Milt -- N5IA n...@zia-connection.com To: k3supp...@elecraft.com Brandon, I am slowly making progress with my initial setup with the K3 and K0 plus the two black box Remote Rig units. I have it all functioning for SSB using an Elecraft MH2 hand held microphone plugged directly into the K0. I am now trying to move to using a headset with a boom microphone. To make the change I remove the J1 jumper in the RR associated with the K0 to remove the bias utilized by the MH2. Otherwise everything is left the same. The problem is I do not get any audio passed through the K0. I have trouble shot the situation by doing the following; I in turn connect both the MH2 and the headset boom mic to the K3 (they are on the same desk for testing) utilizing the front panel mic connection which mirrors the K0, and both microphones work FB. I turn on the bias on the K3 for the MH2 and remove it for the headset boom mic and either one works just fine. So, my question is...What am I not doing correctly to make the boom mic work through the K0? Thanks for your prompt reply. [Elecraft] V29SH
I operated from Jumby Bay, Antigua for much of last week. I used my KX3, Precision End fed 10/20/40 and Buddipole in a vertical configuration (no coil, longer whip and standoff arms and 4 sloping elevated radials-feedpoint at about 8’). Antenna was about 20m from the water. I also used a Pigtail and Hamlog on my iPad for logging. For power, I use a refurbished laptop power supply which takes up minimal room. I also had Enerloops installed for my one outside foray. Some points that might be of interest: -The KX3 and most of the accessories (including the trail version of the End fed and some mini coax)fit neatly into one of Rose’s bags. I took the KX3 out of the bag when going through security. It did not attract any attention. The side plates and cover make the KX3 a lot easier to transport. I checked the Buddipole as an extra bag. It arrived unscathed. -The Buddipole played very well on 15 and 17. I think the key is to set it up as a i/4 wave vertical and not use the coil if you can. I did set it up directly on the beach one day and I did not notice any appreciable change from running it closer to the villa. I did not have enough coax to run back to the air conditioned room when it was on the beach so it was more difficult to operate in the heat and direct sunlight. The End Fed worked well on 20 with it tied off to a tree at about 15’. Again only 20m from the water. -17 was the money band with good opening to EU and the pacific. Perhaps jaded from operating from the abyss of VE6 I had forgotten how good propagation is from the Caribbean. I had next to no noise and the band was open well into the evening. -initially I could not find the KPD paddle which I could have sworn I packed. This meant running cw using Hamlog through the Pigtail. For some reason I could not get my Zagg keyboard to pair with the iPad so typing calls on the touchscreen was a bit tricky. Eventually I managed to pair the Zagg and found the KPD. Apologies to anyone who worked me and I mistyped your call! -90% of the contacts were on CW. I initially used my Heil Quite Phones and boom mic for SSB (on the theory to save space I could use the Heil Phones on the plane-less the boom mic). However, I could not get enough “oomph” from this setup despite it playing well at home. The MH3 worked much better. In retrospect, I should have taken the CM500 headset, but again was trying to save space. However, with QRP and simple antennas I find SSB to be a lot of work. -The Pigtail worked well in ad hoc mode although it did eat two 9v batteries. I have a Piglet which I can power from a separate source (and it is smaller) for the next trip. -KX3 ran flawlessly. Most of all it was fun and allowed me to operate a few hours each day between other activities. The trail version of the End fed and coax fit into the bag and makes a nice package. I’ll post a few pictures of the setup on the V29SH QRZ webpage. 73 Tim VE6SH This e-mail may contain information that is privileged, confidential and/or exempt from disclosure. [Elecraft] KX3 power reverts from 10W back to 5W
So I had set up in the park, with a charged 12V 17Ah battery connected. It was a hot day but I was in the shade. Every time I set power level to 10W and keyed the TX, it reverted back to 5W instantly. Why? The Volt meter showed 12.3 V at RX and dropped to 11.7V at TX. Was that the reason (getting below 12V)? Was the PA getting too hot? It never went below 5W. [Elecraft] K3 6 M QUIRK
Wonder if anyone has seen the following problem. Nothing that is keeping me off the air. K3 is SN in the 1500 range. It is fairly bare bones with just the IF OUT/RX ANT strip installed. Also 100 watt module. On 6 M I use a 20 DB preamp that is powered from and external power source the the RX ANT IN/OUT connects the preamp. When adjust the transmitter power out, when I reach the point where the power meter scale changes from 0-100 watts to 1-10 watts the receiver gain drops by 20 db, the amount of the preamp. It appears that the RX ant has been switched back to normal antenna input. It becomes good again as I increase the output power to the point where the scale changes back to 0-100 W. Weird indeed. Normally I run above 10 watts on 6 M so no problem but this should not happen. Elecraft techs suggest reseating the front panel. I have another K3 , later serial number that does something similar but in reverse. When I cross the transmitter power scale change from 0-100 to 1-10 there is a very minor increase in the receiver gain. I can see it on the P3 and just hear it in the speaker. This amount not a problem to me but apparently something happens in the receiver circuit on 6 M when the power scale switches over. Other bands appear okay. I know there was some kind of firmware patch way back to correct for transmitter power jumping from around 8 to 13 watts or something like that. Don’t remember the exact numbers. Hi Arno, The KX3 requires 11.0 volts minimum on key-down for power output levels of greater than 5 W. We do this to ensure low IMD in SSB transmit mode, but it's good practice in general because most 12-V batteries can be damaged quickly if you let the voltage go much below 11.0 with a heavy load applied. When you measured the voltage on key-down, were you using a voltmeter at the battery, or the one in the radio? You could have been dropping some voltage across the power supply wires (+ and - leads probably about the same), or in the KX3's DC input circuitry (reverse-polarity diode, current sense resistor, etc.). So even if you read 11.7 V, it's possible that you briefly dipped below that 11.0 threshold. Try running it into a dummy load, using the same battery. What is the voltage on key-down? (Make sure to bypass the ATU or tune it into the dummy load for this test.) 73, Wayne N6KR On Aug 5, 2013, at 2:49 PM, Arno Dienhart a...@broadweave.net wrote: So I had set up in the park, with a charged 12V 17Ah battery connected. Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 vs K3 ATU
The K3 has values of reactance which are smaller in size than the KAT500. Therefore there are some instances of antenna and frequency where the KAT500 cannot tune and the K3 can. In that case, you could place a reactance on the feedline to bring the KAT500 into tune. You can find those values since both tuners display their values when tuned (or are unsatisfactory tuned). - Chuck, KE9UW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KAT500-vs-K3-ATU-tp7577381p7577417.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Wayne, I measured with the built-in meter. Sorry, I don't have a dummy load, so I cannot test that. Next time I will connect two of the same sealed lead acid batteries in parallel and see if something changes. No problem to use two. Thank you for the explanation. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 power reverts from 10W back to 5W
Most likely your antenna load Z was on the low side, increasing TX current drain. Either excess TX current or supply voltage below 11 V can cause power to revert to 5 watts. 73, Wayne N6KR http://www.elecraft.com On Aug 5, 2013, at 5:46 PM, Arno Dienhart a...@broadweave.net wrote: Hi Wayne, I measured with the built-in meter. [Elecraft] KX3 12kHz audio spike
While doing some tests tonight to compare the white noise of my Icom IC-7000 to the white noise of the KX3, both having the AF gain turned all the way down, I noticed something a little unusual in the KX3's spectrum: http://imgur.com/0QF9vXh There is quite a spike of noise at 12kHz (well, relative to everything else around it anyway), with harmonics at 24, 36, and 48 kHz. The latter three of course are inaudible to humans. I found that even without the considerable amplification that I was using to get the levels high enough to analyze, I was able to hear the 12kHz tone in my headphones with the AF gain turned up higher than 30 or so. The sound is present even with everything else disconnected from the unit, and it begins immediately after it is powered up, before it begins receiving. I could see it possibly giving someone fatigue or a headache after a while, even if not consciously aware of it. Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have the test equipment to see whether this is present for others and not just me? Nick -- *N6OL* Saying something doesn't make it true.
