Good luck to the expedition and those that chase after it. Personally, I never seem to do well in pileups. Maybe lack of erp on my part (on 23cm I do better, but I have more erp on that band) or a dislike of the sort of behaviour that seems to grip some people when a really rare DX country comes up on a band makes me want to just go somewhere else and do something different? On 6M I used to notice that, when there was a rare DX station on, you could work other stations that would be covered in a pile up normally because everyone was after the super DX station. So, I'll be pleased to try to hoover up a few lesser DX stations whilst everyone scrambles for Wake Atoll. The fact that, even after being licenced since 1982, I've barely made DXCC worked, let alone confirmed, will tell you that I'm not in any sense of the word a DXer. ;-) To missquote a well known saying, for me, DX isn't quite. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Wattmeter Calibration
Roger, The quick answer is it does not - however --- The default wattmeter calibrations are pretty close to optimum. Yes, if the wattmeter calibration is done before running the TX gain calibration, the results will be better - assuming your external wattmeter is accurate. One item to be considered is that the K3 wattmeter calibration can be no better than the accuracy of the external wattmeter. Many ham grade wattmeters are speced at 20% of full scale, so on a 200 watt scale, the reading can be off as much as 40 watts at any point on the scale - set for 20 watts, the error can be as much as 4 watts, again at any point on the scale. That does not provide sufficient accuracy at 5 watts, nor even at 50 watts. Even the revered Bird wattmeters are good for 5% of the full scale reading (right after calibration), so with a 100 watt slug, that is still a potential error of 5 watts (at any point on the scale). How many Bird slugs do you have with a recent calibration sticker? I am referring to analog wattmeters, and although digital wattmeters suffer from the same error potential, the error is normally a percentage of the reading rather than a percentage of the full scale reading. End - periodic wattmeter accuracy RANT. If you are assured that your wattmeter is accurate, then use that wattmeter calibration, but if you do not know the accuracy of your wattmeter, you will have to depend on the K3 default calibration. FYI, I depend on a Telepost LP-100 wattmeter which has been calibrated to NIST standards as my secondary standard at the workbench. It is guaranteed to 5% of the actual reading, but is typically in the 2 to 3 percent range. It is used as a 'sanity check' for my other wattmeters. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/30/2013 9:05 PM, Roger D Johnson wrote: If you don't calibrate the wattmeter how does the K3 Utility know when the output is 5 or 50 watts? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] sub receiver
Your question assumes that we know how you operate and what you want out of your station. There is no way we can know this. Think about how you operate and what you could do with a second receiver and then decide if you need or want one. If you don't know why you might need or want a sub receiver, you probably don't need one. 73, Scott, N9AA On 10/30/13 11:23 PM, Alan Grant wrote: I am a very happy owner of a K3 (whole system) but I did not order the sub receiver, what am I missing out on VK4KO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] sub receiver
Hi Alan, The sub receiver has a few primary uses: - Monitoring one frequency (even on a different band) while operating on another. You might be waiting for a sked or a band opening, or waiting for a chance to call one station while tuning around looking for others. Very useful for hunt 'n' pounce operation, field day, etc. - Listening to a DX station with one receiver while listening to a pileup calling him in the other. This allows you to search for a clear spot to call (or find the place where he's listening, by listening to other callers) without missing any of the DX station's transmissions. This works in either SPLIT or non-SPLIT mode. Without the sub receiver, this would typically be done by using SPLIT and the REV switch to periodically search for a transmit frequency. But with the sub, you can park VFO B on the DX station and use VFO A for transmit -- i.e., no need to use SPLIT. - Diversity receive, where main and sub are locked together on the same frequency but they use two different antennas. If the sub's antenna is polarized somewhat differently from the main receiver's antenna, stations subject to fading (QSB) will tend to become louder in one receiver even when fading in the other. This is especially valued by low-band DXers, who have to play every trick in the book to copy weak stations. The sub can have a different band, mode, and filter settings from main. 73, Wayne N6KR On Oct 30, 2013, at 8:23 PM, Alan Grant asgr...@aapt.net.au wrote: I am a very happy owner of a K3 (whole system) but I did not order the sub receiver, what am I missing out on VK4KO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] K3 2nd receiver use
I use my 2nd receiver to monitor the 6M band for openings. It has a dedicated 6M antenna that's permanently connected to the 2nd receiver's input. 73!
