[Elecraft] [K2] Pinout for J2 (headphone jack)
It appears the front panel headphone jack on my K2 may be slightly loose. I'd like to retouch the pins from the bottom side of the RF board without removing the front panel. I can see 8 pins underneath J2 arranged as follows: front of RF board --X-- XX-XX -XXX- rear of RF board Should I retouch all 8 pins or just the first 5? 73, Bill W4ZV -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K2-Pinout-for-J2-headphone-jack-tp7585286.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Pinout for J2 (headphone jack)
Bill, The front-most pin is the ground pin, and is the one that provides more mechanical stability than any of the others - So if it is mechanical stability you are after, re-solder all 8. There is a tiny bit of looseness in the jack mounting to its grounding lug due to the mechanical assembly of the jack itself. That is not normally a problem even though it is bothersome to some. if it maintains good electrical contact with the plug, you might want to leave it alone. 73, Don W3FPR On 3/10/2014 7:36 AM, Bill W4ZV wrote: It appears the front panel headphone jack on my K2 may be slightly loose. [Elecraft] [KX3] Overheating when portable
Having now used my KX3 on numerous portable SOTA activations, it does seem overheating is going to be an issue when outside temperatures rise. Yesterday I operated from Monserate Mtn in Southern California. There was no shade on the peak, air temps were probably pushing up into the low eighties and there as little shade or breeze. After an hour's operation the radio was running very warm and it was no surprise when it started backing it's power down. Going into summer I see many days of similar conditions and I'm looking for solutions to keep the radio cooler when operating portable. Any thoughts on heatsinks, shade covers, little fans, third-party add-ons would be greatly appreciated. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Overheating when portable
I've used my KX3 in SoCal for about two years now, so two summers. To keep PA / OSC temperature managed, I use two methods in the order shown: - Get the KX3 under shade - Get some airflow going (I use a 12V RV fan) Note that the fan is useful to keep the op from overheating as well. :) The methods above solve 80% of the thermal problems I see here in the Inland Empire. An aftermarket heatsink is used by some ops; I don't use it. I have also used an odd method that really confused some of my field day buddies last year. On field day, cool refreshments are always needed, so I bring along an ice chest with drinks, etc. I made a little shelf that allow the KX3 to rest above the ice but still maintains a reasonable thermal seal (but not as good as having the top down on the chest). Having the cooler air and shelf surface around the KX3 helps maintain PA/OSC temps. It doesn't have to be much, just five deg C helps a lot. I don't think the ice chest method helps operators when portable (hiking around, backpack only) but it might be useful for stationary portables in a campground, picnic area, area. 73, matt W6NIA On Mon, 10 Mar 2014 07:45:10 -0700, you wrote: Having now used my KX3 on numerous portable SOTA activations, it does seem overheating is going to be an issue when outside temperatures rise. I've flown commercially with my KX3 on three round trips, all domestic flights. Phil, I don't own a KX3, but I've taken my FT-857D (once) and my FT-817ND multiple times (I don't travel with my K3). I never had any issues with TSA. They didn't even bat an eye about them, in fact. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 through TSA Security ?
Have taken K3 through TSA security many times, including most recent trip to Montserrat. I put it in a Pelican case. In most cases they do not bat an eye, and do not even open the case. I also put a copy of my license and spare cable ties in the case for re-sealing. Now, the suitcase that has all the wires, coax, spare connectors, etc., etc. that almost always gets opened after X-ray. Try explaining some of that stuff to inspectors out of the country! BTW, if you are going out of the country, it is always a good idea to carry a copy of your receipt w/serial number. 73 charlie, k1xx/vp2mll Phil Hystad phys...@mac.com wrote: Has anyone taken a KX3 through TSA security with carry-on luggage? Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Overheating when portable
Good idea. I go portable with my 706 several times per year and twice at the 12 inch scale WFP RR, http://wfprr.com/, click on more pages at the bottom for many pictures. I set up under the trees BUT I also use a fan. I buy these little 7 inch fans at Walmart for less than $10 each and use them to blow across the 706 and then to MY face. I have to take several so when I come back after a hike I still have one fan on MY radio instead of having been moved to cool some else's face. My K3 station stays on my bench now. It has made two trips to Field Day but too much chance for damage. They are cheap, small, light, 110v from generator or shore line, and they work great. I ran 100w RTTY and made many contacts in one of the contests one fall and the radio only got warm, not hot or even close. All contacts over 4000 mi and one over 5000. I usually run PSK from my station but everybody was on RTTY. Other stations come along and run phone and CW. 73, Jim KG0KP -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Matt Zilmer Sent: Monday, March 10, 2014 9:59 AM To: Gary Hawkins Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Overheating when portable I've used my KX3 in SoCal for about two years now, so two summers. [Elecraft] K3 - CW VOX configuration possibility?
I'm curious if anyone has an idea if/how the VOX function could be automatically DISABLED when using JUST the TRANSVERTER bands? I use my K3/10 with transverters for 50MHz-10GHz. When using the transverters, I must NOT use VOX because this would bypass the TX sequencer which could cause major mayhem. My transverters use 14 or 28MHz IF from the K3. I now just have to be VERY SURE that the VOX is disabled prior to transverter use. No big deal to do, but could be VERY EASY to forget in my advancing age :-) bad error bad day ... This has never been a problem until now because after 5yrs I now have a HF PA (KXPA-100) for my 10W K3 and I am having a blast on HF with the best radio I have ever owned. It seemed a shame to have the K3 use limited to 50MHz-10GHz. My KXPA100 observations after 4days. Happy in general when used with the K3/10. At times the ATU tuning with non-resonate antennas can be fussy. Occasional Faults that often can be remedied by reducing drive and trying again. (Why reducing power when tuning with the preset Tune power from the K3 does not make sense, maybe just need to try multiple times?) One ODD observation is that I see a K3 SWR as high as 1:3 on some bands/frequencies. The PA SWR indicates a better match to the antenna than the SWR being presented to the K3 by the KXPA-100. I tried running with the 3db internal pad in the KXPA-100 expecting a better match to the K3 but the pad seemed to make no difference in match. ODD to me. With the pad I expected a 50ohm match. 73 Bill K0AWU __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Strange what gets inspected, and what doesn't. When I'm flying, I always pack my suitcase using gallon ziplock bags. Clothes, electronics, etc. -- makes it easier for them to search, and makes packing easier. The TSA leaves a flyer in checked bags that are inspected. I carry one bag that is ALWAYS inspected -- my Curling brooms. 73 -- Lynn On 3/10/2014 9:28 AM, Paul and Sue Huff wrote: I just travelled round trip between Michigan and Arizona with a KX1 in my carry-on luggage. I have my K3 driving an Expert Amp. I set the K3 (with the ATU out) at 25W on each band to drive the Expert to full output. A lot of times I don’t want to turn on the amp and use the K3 “barefoot” at 100W with the ATU switched in. What is the simplest way to do this? I need to change the K3 power out for each band, switch the antenna, switch in the ATU. Is there some simple way to do this? Any suggestions would be appreciated. [Elecraft] New K3 owner, couple of questions (APF vs. DUAL PB, NR under the water sound, KPA3 temp)
Hi, I put together my new K3 without any issues. My 8 and 10 year old daughters helped and they really enjoyed it too. Overall I am very happy with its performance. I do not seem to need PRE on the high bands as much, but I do seem to need ATT on the low bands more... I guess that is by design. I have a few things I need to figure out and the manual does not seem to help: 1. DUAL PB, APF. I am not sure I get the APF to work. I do not hear or see the middle peak of the filter. I think I only get DUAL PB, no matter what I set in the config menu. I am using the latest FW. Any ideas how to verify? 2. NR: I like how the noise goes away, but I do not like the under-the-water sound (K2 owner, no DSP experience). I seem to switch constantly back and forth... I am using the default setting for NR (F1-1). Is there a way to back off the setting slightly to have a better compromise setting? 3. KPA3 temp: The fans are MUCH quieter as my K2's which is good, but I do worry that I have not setup something right...When I monitor the KPA3 temperature, what is the max value that I should watch out for? I am getting up to 41 C during casual operation. Re: [Elecraft] New K3 owner, couple of questions (APF vs. DUAL PB, NR under the water sound, KPA3 temp)
Andy, Congratulations on the new K3! I've had mine about three years and love it. I can only answer one part of one question for you - the Dual PB comes into play only in RTTY operations. It shouldn't enabled for other modes. To help you learn about your K3, you might consider purchasing Fred Cady's book, The Elecraft K3: Design, Configuration, and Operation, from Lulu.com (http://www.lulu.com/shop/search.ep?keyWords=Fred+Cadytype=Not+Servicesite search=lulu.comq=). It will tell you all you need to know, and then some, about the K3. And, no, Fred isn't giving me kick-backs for promoting his book. I'm just another happy customer with no financial interest (unless you count knowing how to run the multi-thousands of dollars piece of equipment at my operating station). Hope this helps. 73 de, -- Ian Ian Kahn, KM4IK Roswell, GA EM74ua km4ik@gmail.com K3 #281, P3 #688, KPA500 #1468 HRD v5.x/6.0 Test Team -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Andreas Hofmann Sent: Monday, March 10, 2014 1:07 PM To: 'elecraft@mailman.qth.net' Subject: [Elecraft] New K3 owner, couple of questions (APF vs. DUAL PB, NR under the water sound, KPA3 temp) Hi, I put together my new K3 without any issues. I saved this gem of a post from Jack WA9FVP Re: [Elecraft] [K3]Noise Filter (NF) ADJ wa9fvp Thu, 27 Dec 2012 16:19:36 -0800 There's no documentation but as far as I can tell-- F1-x through F4-x defines the amount of noise reduction or how aggressive the filter attacks the I.F. noise. F5-X through F8-X defines the amount of reduction and the level that's mixed with the filtered and non-filtered I.F. Note that m which means mix will appear after F5-X and above. X defines the delay. Delay is the amount of time it takes for the filter to converge on a non-sinusoidal signal or the noise. The higher the number, the longer it takes for the noise to reduce to a low level. I hope this helps. Jack WA9FVP F1-x through F4-x are for CW F5-x through F8-x are for SSB On 3/10/2014 12:06 PM, Andreas Hofmann wrote: Hi, I put together my new K3 without any issues. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 through TSA Security ?
Before retiring I was doing about 250K miles a year on United for my employer. The KX3 hadn't yet been invented but I usually traveled with an HT and sometimes a NorCal-40 with wire antenna and a mini-paddle. I was never denied boarding with them. However the amount of attention they got at TSA was, as best as I could discern, a function of which airport I was at, time of day, the phase of the moon, and whether or not Saturn was somewhere. I wear braces on both legs from old injuries, I always fly in cargo shorts so they can see them, and I always get some attention. The radios were a crap shoot however. Heading for Ft Lauderdale and a Canal Cruise, I took my KX1 and a wire antenna. I opted against the MP-1 since the resonator looks a lot like a pipe bomb on the Xray. Nobody even asked about the radios. I always had a copy of my license and the radio manual with them. Now, the suitcase that has all the wires, coax, spare connectors, etc., etc. that almost always gets opened after X-ray. Try explaining some of that stuff to inspectors out of the country! Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Re: KXPA100 SN 707 Total Frustration with this Amp
Thanks to all that replied either directly or via the reflector. Today I removed the back plate and checked the coax connectors. They were installed on the proper place on the board and were fully seated. I decided to start over from scratch and took everything apart. I tightened every screw on the back plate and reinstalled the hex nut on the rs232 jack and checked everything with my fluke. I reseated the coax connectors on the board and reinstalled the case then the back and front plates per the assembly manual. I configured the kx3 per the Amp Manual and tested into an IFR 1600 on all HF Bands with no faults. I then added the Palstar and AL80B back in line. I keyed up the KX3 with al80b in standby and tuner bypassed. All was ok no faults on 10 - 20 Hexxbeam. I tried another antenna that required the tuner and got an error. I reduced power and fine tuned the Palstar. The SWR to fault must be sensitive in the amp since swr was under 4 before I retuned. Everything appears to be working correctly. Re: [Elecraft] New K3 owner, couple of questions (APF vs. DUAL PB, NR under the water sound, KPA3 temp)
Hi Andy, 1. The Dual PB/APF button has multiple functions. First of all, it is different in CW than in RTTY, and it doesn't do anything in other modes (SSB, DATA A, etc.). In CW, the Dual PB button has two functions, depending on whether CONFIG:DUAL PB is set to APF or NOR. In the APF configuration in CW, it is a very narrow audio peaking filter. Tuning of signals is touchy - even a 10-20 Hz change can make the difference between copy and no copy on a weak signal. The APF doesn't do much for strong signals - it's for pulling very weak CW signals out of the noise. In the NOR configuration in CW, the dual PB filter gives you a stepped filter bandpass, with a 150 Hz center portion set within a broader context bandpass about 20 dB down from the central bandpass; the width of the broader context bandpass is controlled by the WIDTH control. The effect is most obvious when WIDTH is set wide, say to 700-1000 Hz. Without the DUAL PB, signals several hundred Hz away but within the bandpass are strong; with DUAL PB, they are attenuated but still audible, although not as strong as signals within the narrower central bandpass; when WIDTH is narrowed down, with or without DUAL PB signals that far away become inaudible. When WIDTH is at, say, 400 Hz or so, the effect of the DUAL PB setting is not quite as obvious - the stepped response is not all that different from what you may be used to using normal crystal filtering without DSP. In RTTY (FSK D or AFSK A), the Dual PB button gives you a dual peak filter peaked on the two tones of the RTTY signal. In theory, this actually degrades the performance of a well-designed demodulator, so you might be better off not using it routinely, but in the situation where there are two overlapping RTTY signals with the mark or space of the interfering signal in between the mark and space of the one you are trying to work, it may help reduce the interference. 2. I can't help with NR. 3. KPA3 temp: at 41C, from a thermal point of view your PA is loafing. In heavier use (RTTY or heavy CW contesting use), it will climb up into the 50s or even the low 60s (depends on the ambient temperature, of course), and the fans will speed up. You can hear what the fans sound like at the different speed levels by using the CONFIG:KPA3 menu and changing it temporarily from NOR to FN1, FN2, FN3 or FN4. I don't think I have ever gotten my PA temp high enough to switch to the FN4 level automatically (somewhere around 65-70C, perhaps?), but I have reached the FN2 and FN3 levels during contests (FN3 mostly in RTTY). The KPA3 is supposed to protect itself by shutting off at 84C, but I've never seen anything approaching that level. You may see the PA TEMP indication change slightly during transmit as compared to receive. I believe this is caused by the voltage difference between TX and RX (if for no other reason than resistive losses in the power cable). You can set the PA TEMP display to RX-only if necessary to avoid this effect. 73, Rich VE3KI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] Intermittent Audio on K3
Some time ago I started losing audio while using my K3 I use Line in audio The symptom goes as follows: talking along and next thing you know there is no RF, further research shows that the radio is still in transmit but there is no audio. Put an adapter and scope on the audio input Now I have absolutely assessed that there is audio going in to the radio when this condition occurs. Initially all that was needed to get going again was to un key and re key the transmitter. But within the last few weeks it now needs a power cycle of the radio to regain audio. This occurs about 30-90 seconds into a transmission. My next step will be to take the radio apart and start re seating all connections. Another clue gained this morning on 75 meters was that when my audio quits, the other station can still hear me very very faintly. Lending credence to the audio theory. I have never used the front panel mic on this radio, but I do have an MH2 from K2 days that I might re purpose to plug into the front and see what the results may be. While I prepare for the next step in troubleshooting, has anyone else ever seen this anomaly ? 73, Phil K3TUF __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KX3 beta firmware rev. 1.94: Improved operation with KXPA100; limiter for use when AGC is off; etc.
KX3 beta firmware rev 1.94 (with DSP rev 1.28) is now available. See release notes below. You'll need the latest version of our KX3 Utility application (1.13.8.24) to download and install firmware. For full instructions on loading beta releases, as well as KX3 Utility, see our KX3 software page: http://www.elecraft.com/KX3/KX3_software.htm 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 1.94 / DSP 1.28, 3-8-2014 * 8.5-9.5 MHz TRANSMIT AND ATU OPERATION IMPROVED: Corrected low power output in this range, which also allows the ATU to function normally. Note: Applies only if the KX3 is enabled for transmit in this range (U.S. “MARS” allocations, etc.). * KXPA100 POWER SETTING IMPROVEMENT: The KX3’s PWR control can now be adjusted across the 10-watt/11-watt boundary in either direction during transmit (including TUNE mode) without causing a large spike in KXPA100 power output. Also, during TUNE, the “TX” knob function is now always assigned to power output rather than keyer speed or mic gain. * AGC-OFF AF LIMITER NOW WORKING: Some operators prefer to turn off AGC and control gain manually using the KX3’s RF GAIN control. However, if an extremely strong signal is present with AGC off, audio output can be uncomfortably loud. The KX3 provides an AF limiter for the AGC-off case. Use the AF LIM menu entry to adjust the threshold at which limiting takes place. For Application Programmers (see the K3/KX3 Programmer’s Reference): * PO (POWER OUTPUT READ) COMMAND NOW USABLE IN QRO MODE (KXPA100 ENABLED): As with the KX3’s bar graph, the “PO” command returns an estimate of KXPA100 power output based on KX3 drive level. (You can use the KXPA100’s “^PF” command to read the amp’s power output more accurately.) * OM COMMAND NOW SHOWS KXAT100 AND KX3-2M OPTIONS: These are represented by the letters ‘T’ and ‘X’ respectively in the “OM” response. * ATU.X MD MENU ENTRY (KXAT100 ATU MODE) NOW REMOTELY ACCESSIBLE: When the PA MODE menu entry is set to ON, the ATU MD menu entry changes to ATU.X MD to show the mode of the KXAT100 external ATU. The “MP” command can now be used to read (but not set) the KXAT100’s mode in this case. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 through TSA Security ?
I regularly travel to New Hampshire with radio equipment in my checked luggage. The radio is a Small Wonder Labs PSK-20 which is quite small, but then there is the SignaLink, a 2 element 20M wire beam, power supply, connecting cables etc. The bag is inspected about 60% of the time as shown by the TSA love notes. Other than an inspection notice, I haven't had any problems. I also usually carry on a HT in a Pelican case for communication with my airport ride. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 through TSA Security ?
Sure they do, just make sure it has nothing to do with travel, security, etc. Coming home on my last pleasure trip, the TSA agent was making conversation, and I said it was a great trip! He said too bad you have to go back to work. I told him I'd been fired. He said sorry, I said no big deal, my boss was an expletive redacted. He said I've had that problem. I said so you were self-employed too? He laughed out loud, and didn't flag me for extra security. I think being polite, and treating them like a fellow human being goes a long way. Do what you can to make their job easier. 73 -- Lynn On 3/10/2014 3:51 PM, Bill Frantz wrote: TSA people appreciate being treated with politeness. Re: [Elecraft] Intermittent Audio on K3
losing audio while using my K3 Phil, I had similar characteristics, involving speaker audio. Loosen screws for the front panel and pull it off and reseat. It fixed my problem and the rig has been running for 6 weeks. Of course Murphy is watching me and sees the rest of the little screws in a cup on the shelf above the K3. As soon as I button it all back up he is prepared to resurrect the problem. Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Miscellaneous Accessory Board Project
K4SOC Sam KD8JXJ Bill KA5QQA Rob WC7SDale I have placed the order for three (3) board panels, each containing three (3) boards. When I have received them I will cut the panels into individual boards and send them upon receipt of payment. The cost for 3 panels amounts to $US 109.70 (includes shipping) so the cost per board would be $12.19 plus shipping (if my OLD math is correct). I will notify each of you when I have the boards ready to ship. 73 Tom KG7CFC On Sun, 9 Mar 2014 17:50:11 -0700 Thomas Taylor li...@comcast.net wrote: Would any of you K2 owners want to get together to order the PCB's for a quantity discount? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 through TSA Security ?
As an attorney here in Texas for 39 years, my experience has been that our profession is the most closely watched and disciplined of any I know. It is hard to get to take the Texas Bar exam. You need letters from everyone for whom you have worked recommending you, etc. Last time I checked, Texas publicly disciplined and disbarred more attorneys than any other state on a % basis. Is this harsh? Was your law school classmate treated unfairly? I don't know, but don't play games at the airport in Texas even if you have a KX3. Jim NN5O James A. Carmody, Attorney Arbitrator 19 S.
