Re: [Elecraft] K2? Easy peasy

2018-01-27 Thread Don Wilhelm

All,

I do indeed have that mod, but I thought it was mainly for Low Frequency
rolloff. I do know that it works quite well for that purpose, but I
don't know about the 6 dB gain.

Change C34 to 0.47uF, and change C32 to something in the range of
0.003uF to 0.005uF.

If you want additional gain, I would recommend the KI6WX KSB2 increased
KSB2 RF Gain mod. It adds gain without the possibility of overloading
the Speech Compressor. If you do that mod, change R9 to 15k and add a
1k resistor between P1 pin 5 and the base of Q3.

I developed a simple mod that adds about 6 dB and adds some low
frequency rolloff. I don't recall details (that was 15 years ago), but I
think W3FPR has notes on it somewhere. It involves changing a few
resistors and one or two caps in the audio chain. I recall that there
other mods farther up the chain.

[Elecraft] K2? Easy peasy

2018-01-27 Thread David Perrin
Hi-

I need to get as much Mic. gain as I can with the current Mic. I have had no
need to adjust it for 15 years until now as I use CW.

My manual is not available.

Can someone give me a lesson in Mic. gain adjustment??

Thanks, Dave K1OPQ

Hi Ted, Indeed sailors to talk that way. As with an airplane there are multiple
factors at work which affect SOG in a sailboat. The hull speed can be different

I am a pilot rather than a sailor, but I wonder if the two knots means net
speed with respect to position, which could mean almost any speed with respect
to the flow of water past the hull. Like the difference between air speed and
ground speed? An airplane with an airspeed of 100 knots into a direct headwind
of 98 knots - God forbid - would have a ground speed of two.

Or don't sailors talk that way?

2 knots?
That would usually be too slow to pass enough water by the rudder to
maintain steering control.

Re: [Elecraft] Who would spend 30 hours+ building an Elecraft K2? (plus: special pricing)

2018-01-27 Thread Neil Zampella

Wayne,

I've been trying to convince SWMBO that I need something to keep me busy
now that I'm semi-retired, I almost have her convinced that my building
a K2 would do it, but I noticed that the pricing lasts until Jan 31st.
Are you thinking about a Valentine's Day sale too ???

On 1/26/2018 6:16 PM, Wayne Burdick wrote:

Who would spend 30 hours+ building an Elecraft K2? Well, me, for one.
I built the very first K2, not long after Eric and I sketched out the design on
napkins right in the middle of Field Day at Henry Coe state park. (Some claim
this is mythology, but I was there :) That first unit wasn’t even painted, and
we had yet to design the option modules.

Since then, nearly another 8,000 times someone else has asked that same question,
concluding that the answer was “yes." It’s worth asking why.

Features?

The K2 is very light in weight for an all-HF-band/multi-mode desktop-style rig
(3 lbs). The transmitter puts out 15 watts (100 W with the bolt-on KPA100 top
cover), and the receiver has been proven crunch-proof over many subsequent
Field Days.

Is that why this little radio--our first product--just refuses to become
obsolete?

Maybe it's the crisp sound of the 100% analog superhet RX strip. Or the
continuously tunable, variable-passband 4.9 MHz crystal filter. Or the
blazingly fast break-in CW.

Could it be ease of operation? The K2 has only the most essential
controls--excellent for first-time users--and an embarrassingly small number of
menu entries compared to most modern rigs.

But when I think back on it, now, I believe the real reason for the K2’s
popularity must be that it’s fun to build. Not just fun, but rewarding:
transforming several bags of carefully labeled bagged components and hardware
into a complete ham transceiver, then putting it on the air. (Somewhere I have
a logbook page that says “First QSO on prototype K2!” that I should frame. It
was a unique experience.)

Speaking of parts, 100% of those used in the K2 have leads. There’s nothing
wrong with surface mount construction, but leaded parts are easier to handle,
harder to lose, and more clearly labeled. This makes for a reassuring,
enjoyable assembly process, even if you’ve had just a little prior experience
building.

What got me started on this email was a quick browse through some of the over
300 reviews of the K2 posted on eHam.net:

http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/117

The enjoyment and pride of building really shines through. This is why Eric and
I started the company in 1998, and it’s why we still offer the K2 only as a
full kit. (Yes, you’ll need a good soldering iron. Our tech support team will
be happy to recommend one if you’re shopping around.)

Many customers have teamed up with their kids or grandkids on the build. In my
book, this beats letting them binge-watch Netflix all weekend. Even if your
co-builders aren’t hams (yet), they’ll have great fun helping you identify and
install parts.

That, in fact, is pretty easy. One of the best things about the K2 is the
assembly manual:

http://www.elecraft.com/manual/E740001_K2%20Owner%27s%20Manual%20Rev%20I.pdf

The manual is written in tutorial style, including finer points like the
resistor color code, photos of all parts and modules, and detailed signal
tracing/troubleshooting instructions. The manual has been refined to the point
that it’s virtually foolproof. Of course if you have any difficulties, you can
always ask a question on the Elecraft reflector, day or night, or check in with
customer support.

For those of you who are just now thinking about tackling the K2, we’ve decided
to sweeten the deal a little. Consider it an early Valentine’s gift. You can
find our K2 specials near the top of this page:

http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_prod_list.htm

I’ll leave you with this photo of two early production K2s. It was taken in
1999 from inside a VW van I used to own (the radio is reliable, the van
wasn’t). S/N 2, in the foreground, was being operated by Eric, WA6HHQ,
except that he’s also the photographer. In the background is yours truly,
complete with a Field-Day’s worth of facial hair and tie-dyed T-shirt,
operating S/N 1.

As they say, YMMV, good luck.

Tom,
Something comes to mind. Go into the setup menu and check the AGC
threshold. As you move it up in number, the audio output goes up, and it
takes a greater signal amplitude before it "kicks" in. I usually use
this when using data A to prevent AGC capture, or at least as much, by
other signals in the passband, for instance FT8 with a received
bandwidth of 2.5KHz. Normally, the K3 AGC is excellent and should have
prevented what you describe unless the the AGC threshold is too high.

Hi,
No the AGC is On. It's still overall several times higher than I have
ever heard when in High.
That's very strange since I always had it at high and when I first
checked it was at High.
So now if I put it to low is is as it has always been. Putting it at
high with AGC off, I will now blow any speaker attached!

Re: [Elecraft] Who would spend 30 hours+ building an Elecraft K2? (plus: special pricing)

2018-01-27 Thread kstover
I did in 2007. K2/100 #4684.
An hour or so after work each night...maybe not if I had a bad day. Weekends
were filled with everything K2/100 and add-ons. Mine is fully "stuffed".

Sad part is I couldn't do it again. Since then I have lost about half of my
eyesight. A couple of badly detached retina's from a fall and six surgeries for
two eyes.

I will never sell that rig.

Since then, nearly another 8,000 times someone else has asked that same
question, concluding that the answer was “yes." It’s worth asking why.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2018-01-27 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

The rainy season coincides with the logging season. Since it is so
wet fire danger is near zero. Skidding logs during the dry season can
start fires just from the friction between logs. During the wet there is
little need for the fire watch crew to stand guard for a week after a
clearcut has been graded and transported to the mill. Normally the
loggers cut stands in full sections so the Coast Range is a checkerboard
on a mile square grid. On my way to town this week I passed through four
active sites before I got to my mailbox in Buxton.

When you meet a logger in town they are easy to recognize. The
thousand yard stare is a tipoff, they are dead tired from on the job
since 4 AM. Their attire is obvious too: suspenders, no belts - ever;
they’re wearing slippers; and the cuffs of their jeans have been ripped
off with both seams cut upward an inch or two. The slippers are because
they normally wear corks which would shred any flooring or the cab of
their truck. Suspenders and ripped seams are due to the nature of their
work. Most non-fatal injuries are from being crushed by logs so the
ripped seams and suspenders allow rapid access to their limbs.

Mostly they make great neighbors except for being awakened by large
timber hitting the earth or when they drop stumps into very large steel
containers. Luckily the sound only carries about five miles or so and
you get used to the whumping sounds over the years. Each time they open
a new block the view of the terrain opens up too. I can now see the top
of my mountain from a number of angles.

Please join us tomorrow on:

14050 kHz at 2300z Sunday (3 PM PST Sunday)
7045 kHz at 0100z Monday (5 PM PST Sunday)

Hi,
No the AGC is On. It's still overall several times higher than I have ever
heard when in High.
That's very strange since I always had it at high and when I first checked
it was at High.
So now if I put it to low is is as it has always been. Putting it at high
with AGC off, I will now blow any speaker attached!

Re: [Elecraft] My radio all of a sudden is so loud it blew a speaker!

2018-01-27 Thread KK1W
Tom, I had the same issue a week ago, but only with one mode (data A). It was
far louder than any other mode and I had to change the line out setting from
10 to 1 in order to use data modes like FT8.
I tried EE INIT but no change. I went back to an earlier config file and it
became normal. I even went through the exercise of printing out the entire
Menu and Config settings, then loading each into the rig and writing down
the settings while scrolling through the radio. I couldn't find any
differences. Regardless if I loaded the latest config file it didn't work
and if I went back to an older one it corrected the problem. Possibly trying
an older config file will fix your problem too?

As they say, YMMV, good luck.

[Elecraft] K-2

2018-01-27 Thread James Walker
All this talk about K-2’s makes me homesick for the one I built shortly before
my retirement (Serial #5529). I spent an entire summer carefully following the
instructions and created an astonishing radio. Sometime after that, the lure of
the K-3 took over and I sold my K2 to finance the purchase of the K-3. I now
regret that decision.

If anyone out there knows who has my old K-2 please contact me off-list. I’d
like to discuss reacquiring the radio. If you tell me you have the radio but
it’s not for sale, just tell me how it’s doing.

2018-01-27 Thread Dave Cole (NK7Z)
The dynamic range of the K3 is so great that this is possible, at least
for an external powered speaker.

There is a setting in the menu for limiting the audio output. While it
makes the audio horrid, it does limit the levels, thus saving your
speaker...

My guess is you have your AGC off... I leave mine turned on, but have
adjusted it to be as ineffective as possible, and only kick in on really
strong signals.

Now, I’ve had to put it at low and it seems that it is now back to the way it
was.
So is it really that loud on High and why would I have not seen this before?
Thanks, Tom

[Elecraft] My radio all of a sudden is so loud it blew a speaker!

2018-01-27 Thread Tom
HI,
Ok a strange thing happened today. I was moving my K3 from one rack to another
and once everything was connected up I turned it on. Now I use an external
speaker and the volume was so loud that it blew. I immediately turned down the
volume and went to the speaker in the K3. Barely touching the volume control
resulted in such a high volume level that I was afraid the speaker would blow
there too!.
I checked the menu setting for the AF Gain and it was set to high which I have
always used since I found the audio out of the K3 was too low for me.
Now, I’ve had to put it at low and it seems that it is now back to the way it

Re: [Elecraft] Who would spend 30 hours+ building an Elecraft K2? (plus: special pricing)

2018-01-27 Thread Edward R Cole

This almost has me ordering one.

My first kit was in summer of 1958 (I was 14). $19.95 bought me a
3-tube regen receiver - Knight kit Ocean Hopper (with all band
coils). I didn't even have a soldering iron which my Dad bought me
for $5.95 for my birthday. I had several Heathkits and Hammarlund
and Clegg and a EF Johnson which were all off-shelf. Later some
Kenwoods, Yaesu's, and Icom's, even two Tentec.

Since then, I have built many surface-mount kits from DEMI and W6PQL,
etc. I'm near the end on SM and retired my kit making business last
spring. This fall I learned I will no longer be climbing towers.

If I did not already own a K3, KX3 (w/2m module), and KXPA100, I
might be interested in the QRP version of the K2 to use as IF for
mw. Guess I got enough on my plate to get finished. But an
intriguing thought.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU - ability to handle more than two antennas

2018-01-27 Thread K9MA
I considered buying the Expert 2K, but decided against it because there
was no apparent way to tie the ATU into my antenna switch.  I'm not sure
there is  or will be with the KPA1500, either, but it is much more
attractive based on Elecraft's reputation.  Besides, I've since built an
external tuner, which IS tied into my antenna switch, which matches both
tribanders almost perfectly, so it won't even be necessary to use the
ATU.  That was, however, a lot of work.

Expert 1.3k-fa has RFI quiet PS and is very light. Its back fans are quiet

Also only 4 antenna outputs. But it was brilliant working with KX3 as
CE0Y/NO9E.

So I am looking for an Expert replacement -quiet both acoustically and RFI,
as automatic and with good CAT. Perhaps KPA1500-2 will be it.

Re: [Elecraft] Who would spend 30 hours+ building an Elecraft K2? (plus: special pricing)

2018-01-27 Thread Phil Kane

I was first licensed in 1952 and spent my senior year in HS using the
modified ARC-5 transmitter and Hallicrafters S-40 receiver in the HS
radio club room - W2CLE, allegedly the oldest HS radio club in the US
(1912).

My next excursion into HF was the pair of Hallicrafters SX-101A and
HT-32B that I used from 1965 through mid-1967 when I was 4X4UQ in
Israel. 55 countries (the easy ones, of course) over 28 months Nice to
be DX for a change.

Returning to the 'States in 1967, went back on 40 meters for about 3
years, then sold those rigs because my main activity was VHF/UHF and
didn't get back on HF until I got the K2 in 2006. Because of my
degraded close-up eyesight (monocular), I couldn't build it myself, but
a local ham friend did it for me. Fully loaded K2 of course for working
HF 'phone and digital modes. If I had known and waited another year or
so I could have had a K3 but that's another story.

I couldn't put up any decent HF antenna after moving to this
ground-floor apartment 5 years ago, so the K2 sits "ready to go"
connected to a short end-fed wire antenna - not a very effective
radiator. Except for contests, I don't hear anything. But I can hope.

I designed my station controller over 20 years ago.  Since I'm a

your Arduino could be programmed to read the antenna switch and send a

My system, for example, has a toggle switch to select one of my two

amp, or separate -- which antenna system is in use. Manual
switching is with a button for each antenna.

Another advantage of doing all the antenna switching external

In my case, it minimizes the number of coax runs, which keeps my
wife happy.

My system, for example, has a toggle switch to select one of my
two tribanders.  I can switch back and forth several times in
a second when trying to determine which direction the signal is
coming from.  I can't possibly manipulate more than one switch
that fast, nor to I want to have to reach over to wherever the
amplifier happens to be, and I certainly don't want to be
messing around with a mouse.  (While all this antenna
switching is going on, the other hand is running the radio.)

[Elecraft] Wrong PIM nuts in KPA500 kit

2018-01-27 Thread Michael Blake
I am waiting on a response from Elecraft TS on this one but I thought I would
ask if anyone else has encountered this problem on the KPA500 kit.

On the bottom edge of both the right and left side panels there are places for
three 6-32 flat head screws. The countersunk holes are obviously larger than
those for the other 4-40 flat head screws.

In my kit one of the three PIM nuts, for each side, was the correct 6-32 thread
PIM nut and the remaining two had 4-40 PIM nuts installed in the bottom cover.
When I had temporarily installed the left hand side panel in the middle of
construction I failed to notice this and just installed screws that fit (one
6-32 and two 4-40) but during final assembly it became obvious that the 6-32
screws would not fit in 4 of the 6 positions.

Thinking that they just had paint in them I tried tp run a 6-32 tap through one
and it naturally seized up and twisted the PIM nut out. Not being the
brightest bulb in the shop I tried that a second time and twisted out the
second PIM nut.

Fortunately these were both on the right hand side where there was room to slip
two 6-32 hex nuts in place and I just used two 4-40 flat head screws on the
left side.

Hopefully Elecraft will be able to send me the correct PIM nuts to replace the
four incorrect ones. That was my request in the email to Doug at tech support.

I certainly would not want to replace the bottom coverl as that would require a
complete disassembly of the amplifier.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Re: [Elecraft] Who would spend 30 hours+ building an Elecraft K2? (plus: special pricing)

2018-01-27 Thread Chip Stratton
My first transceiver was an IC-7000. Suborned by the pretty display.
Elecraft was too plain looking. Then I put together a KX1, and realized
there was something to Elecraft. I didn't want to drop the bucks on a full
K2 kit, so to Ebay I went, where I got a late model K2 with a couple of
problems left by the original builder. After finding and fixing those, and
adding the K6XX and MAB mods, this K2 has become my primary shack
transceiver. Nothing else has lured me away - except for the KX3 and KX2
that are now my portable and travel rigs. Strangely, in the shack, I
actually enjoy using the K2 more than the KX radios.

Still in the back of my mind, I keep thinking I will at some point buy a K2
kit to build myself. Hopefully I won't wait too long.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: 3Y0Z Bouvet Island DXpedition

2018-01-27 Thread ab2tc
Hi all,

Look at this video from their ship:

https://www.facebook.com/vhotzfeld/videos/g.639362206232014/10213092437043243/?type=2=1

They have slowed down to 2 knots (from 10-11). This storm might delay their
ETA by several days.
