Re: [Elecraft] Ideas for an FT8 Radio
The short answer for issues of obsolescence is the same for computers as it is for RF components: modularization. I replaced the synthesizers in my K3 when better ones came out. I would expect to do the same for the computer, whether it is integrated into the radio package or separate. I think the best route towards a FT8 radio is to have a radio that will do FT8 and any other mode its computer can handle. Running a single-board Linux computer seems attractive. It seems like the radio will need a keyboard, display, pointing device, audio, and RS-232 interfaces. Raspberry PIs have USB for keyboard, pointing device, and RS-232; HDMI for display; and built-in audio. For future flexibility, just using USB and HDMI may be attractive. Or just USB if there are usable USB displays. Using only one or two interfaces makes swapping computers simple, at least until the interfaces are no longer supported. USB seem to have a lifespan on par with radios, so obsolescence seems a low risk. HDMI is higher risk, as display interfaces are caught up in the whole Digital Rights Management arms race. 73 Bill AE6JV On 1/1/19 at 8:42 PM, wa8...@gmail.com (Ken) wrote: As for the concept of a dedicated FT8 radio, what's going to happen when FT9 becomes the latest craze? Re: [Elecraft] Ideas for an FT8 Radio
You run the amount of power required to make the contact, up to the legal limit. If you wish to operate QRP, that’s your choice. I remind you that RTTY is also digital and full legal limit is common; FT8 is semi-automated RTTY with complex pattern but improved reception. High power is also common. On some bands (160M) its nearly a requirement. There is no difference between antenna gain, when possible or amp gain of equal dB raise. Many folks can’t use improved antennas (no space or budget), so power is an answer. The true issue is when folks don’t run clean power. 73, Rick wa6nhc Spiel Czech happens > On Jan 1, 2019, at 8:42 PM, Ken wrote: > > Geesh, how much power are people running? Re: [Elecraft] [FS] KX3
Charlie, If it fits into a USPS Flat Rate box (and a KX3 will nicely), the price is the same no matter what the distance - if it fits, it ships. Shipping to (or from) Canada (or any other non-US country) should always use USPS - both UPS and FedEx collect "brokerage fees" at the destination. I am not sure about DHL. Yes, I have done a LOT of shipping via USPS Priority mail. It is wise to weigh the package and consult the USPS postage calculator to determine the best method - Flat Rate or regular Priority. Flat Rate must use the right box, but regular Priority will go in a box up to 12 x 12 x 12 inches with no increase in price. Greater than 12 inches in any dimension will incur an additional fee. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/1/2019 4:11 PM, Charlie T wrote: Yes, that's true for a post card or letter, but Priority Mail rates as well as Parcel Post, or whatever it's called nowadays, increase with distance. Re: [Elecraft] How to Isolate 2nd Transceiver in two Radio Base Station (WU6R / Mark)
Mark, The assumption that "there is a way to use both radios at the same time" is the real base of the problem. A lot depends on the power level you are running - the problem get worse as the power is increased. If you can reduce the pickup on the antenna used by the non-transmitting radio, that will help a lot. A horizontal antenna on one and a vertical on the other radio may be sufficient at lower powers. Physical separation between the antennas will help as well, as well as good common mode chokes on the feedline - use one at each end of the feedline to choke off RF that is picked up on the non-transmit feedline. If you do not have to listen to the non-transmit radio(s) during transmitting, the problem becomes one of only protecting the other radio(s) front end. There are devices to accomplish that, or you could simplify things by adding a relay that is activated to short the input of the non-transmit radio when transmitting by the other radio. That relay (or relays) can be activated by the transmitting radio's amp keying output. As you can imagine, this can get complicated with only 2 radios, but you also mentioned the inclusion of SDRplay, which may mean more than 2 receivers, and the situation becomes even more complex. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/1/2019 7:34 AM, Mark Wheeler via Elecraft wrote: I see lots shack photos with two transceiver setups, especially two Elecraft K3S radios; how do you isolate the 2nd transceiver or SDR receiver (SDR Play, for example) so that you do not damage one transceiver while transmitting with the other? Having just assembled one of each of these, I can’t say I blame you for buying it factory-built. 73!Jack, W6FB On Dec 30, 2018, at 6:30 PM, Ken B wrote: Thank you - I followed Fig 3 on page 10 which is specific to ICOM. Thanks for the detail. Table 2 on page 8 of the KAT500 manual should have given you the exact connections you needed to make for the Molex to KAT500 cable. Note that the plug o the KAt500 end is stereo with tip, ring and sleeve. Please recheck these connections to make sure that pin 4 of the Molex does indeed go to the sleeve of the mini-phone plug. It would be best to ohm out the cable to make sure the signals go to the right places and there are no shorts between pins. Table 3 on that same page shows the Key-line connections, which I suspect are correct at the point. In any case be sure to check that cable as well. 73!Jack, W6FB On Dec 30, 2018, at 4:13 PM, Ken B wrote: Good evening The Icom IC-7600 KAT500, and KPA500 are each grounded to a single terminal strip with a #10 cable directly to a ground rod 15 ft away. The Icom made cable splits into 2 connections on the KAT, the first is plugged into DC power, and the second is plugged into the Tuner connection - In the back of the 7600 is also a 7 conductor DIM connection (Acc2). I made a cable to connect pin 3 to the KAT PTT RLY The KAT - Other than mentioned above ant1 goes out to the antenna- XMTR is connected via a 2 ft piece of LMR400 to the output of the KAP- The unlabeled connector above the PTT RLY goes to the PA Key of the KAP The KAP - Other than what is mentioned above the only other connection is a piece of LMR400 from Ant1 on the 7600 to input on the KAP. My thinking on the ground issue is that the power-plug ground is completing a circuit that should not exist and thus disruptingoperations on band change. The question would be what is connected to ground that should not be, and where? Are the KPA and KATs kits or did they come assembled? 73!Jack, W6FB On Dec 30, 2018, at 2:22 PM, Ken B wrote: Please allow me to clairify. Don, Thank you. Mark On Jan 01, 2019, at 10:14 AM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Mark, The assumption that "there is a way to use both radios at the same time" is the real base of the problem. Re: [Elecraft] How to Isolate 2nd Transceiver in two Radio Base Station (WU6R / Mark)
Mark, it mainly depends on the "between port isolation" of the switch that you are going to use and the output power. There are some minor things to pay attention too like a poor quality (= poor shielded) interconnection cable. A 10 ft coax with poor shielding can pick up enough energy (especially under high power conditions) to put your receiver/s on risk. The higher the frequency and the higher the power you are running the higher will be the picked up power with all other variables constant. A typical laboratory grade switch will have an isolation of 100 dB or more. Thats how good the shielding of your cable has to be in order to take advantage of the switch´s isolation. A typical ham radio coax switch (DAIWA, Ameritron, MFJ, ALPHA Delta and alike) has about 60 dB at best and sometimes only 40 dB at 28 MHz. With one kilowatt on the port in use you have 100 mW (S 9+93!!) leaking thru to the unused ports. How much it is exactly depends on the length of the cable connected to the unused port and the termination (radio on or off etc.) If 2 radios to one antenna (or vice versa) is all you need then a two-way coax switch could provide some extra relief as you can terminate the unused port with 50 ohms and get another few dB of isolation. Multiport switches for 3,4,5 or more ports with isolation more than 80 dB are hard to get and EXPENSIVE!
