The new to me KPA1500 seems to be behaving nicely, so time to make some room in
the equipment closet.

(2) KPA500 amplifiers. Both these amps have the NX1P designed low drive
modification. 15-20 watts in for full output.

KAT500 Tuner. Completely stock, works as designed.

All units working great, no problems since I’ve had them. Excellent physical
condition.

Please contact off list for additional info, pictures, etc.

Look at the two diodes in the SWR/watt meter circuit. These two diode are
critical to the operation of the K3. These are the foundation of the K3s
ALC implementation. Ive had to replace them.

Eric,

Thank you for the update. I did find that I needed to reduce transceiver
output from where I had it set ~26 W to 21 W to keep within legal output.
Other wise no issues. I do use BYP for tuner as I have a remote tuner.

KPA1500 F/W 2.09 Beta has been released to the elecraft website. It can be
downloaded from the support f/w- s/w page in the K-Line\KPA1500 section.

F/W 2.09 provides a significant improvement in ATU tuning results. It also an
improves the communication of current radio frequency between the K3/K3S and the
1500 via the AUX cable. For those of you upgrading from 2.0, see the full

Both of these issues were highlighted in the recent "KPA-1500 tuner question"
thread on the Elecraft email list. Our thanks to Scott-K9MA, Walt-WA1KKM, our
regular KPA1500 Field Testers and others who have helped us quickly address
these issues.

We also have a new KPA1500 Utility (Windows Version 1.19.2.21) on the same
KPA1500 page. Mac and Linux versions will appear soon. This utility version has
several improvements and also fixes a bug where the erase ATU memories Utility
button did not always perform the erase. (The erase always worked when done
directly from the KPA1500 front panel menu.)

Re: [Elecraft] running computer connection while KXPA100 concurrently

2019-03-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

Brian,

With the KX3 and KXPA100, you should be using the optional KX3 to
KXPA100 Adapter Cable (KXPACBL) connected as shown on page 14 of the
KXPA100 manual.

You will then connect the KXUSB cable to the KXPA100 RS232 jack to
communicate with either the KX3 or the KXPA100.
In other words, only one connection to the PC. The KXPA100 jack is a
replication of the KX3 ACC1 jack.

That will suffice for the rig control portion of NaP3. In addition, you
will need the connection to the soundcard from the RX I/Q jack for the
spectral display.

From my reading of the manual.. if using the KXPA100 I have to run two cables
from ACC1 and ACC2 to an adapter box that then goes to the Control input on the
KXPA100. If I am therefore using the ACC1 port for the KXPA100 I don't have
the port available for the computer to see the KX3 info.. right? Therefore NaP3
has no rig or frequency info to use.

Re: [Elecraft] running computer connection while KXPA100 concurrently

2019-03-01 Thread Walter Underwood
I think pages 12 and 13 of the KXPA100 manual are pretty clear. That shows a
cable from the KXPA100 to the PC at jack labeled “RS232 (PC)”.

This is the explanation from page 13.

"Personal Computer Interface Cable: All communications with both the KX3
transceiver and the
KXPA100 amplifier take place through this cable. This cable is not required,
but provides enhanced
capability to operate the KXPA100 using the KXPA Utility program, for updating
firmware in either
the KXPA100 or KX3 and other functions (see Utility Program, page 32 for
details.) Also, this cable
provides communications between your PC and the KX3 through the KXPA100. You do
not need to
connect the KX3 directly to your computer. Simply load the KX3 Utility program,
be sure you have
the correct serial port selected, and your computer will find the KX3 as long
as it is powered on.”

[Elecraft] running computer connection while KXPA100 concurrently

2019-03-01 Thread Brian
I am interested in running a KXPA100 with my KX3... but there is something I
cannot figure out.

Or can I use the RS232 (PC) port from the KXPA100 to provide info to the
computer (though I would actually NOT want RS-232 physical type port for
this... only USB.. since laptops don't generally have RS-232 any longer.) So
can I use the Elecraft ACC to USB cable for that?

Is there a solution to this setup.. or is it that use of the amp and its
requisite interconnections precludes the availability?

Its a bit confusing since I know the update info has to be made available
somehow FROM the PC and to the KX3 in order to do firmware updates via the KX
Utility.

By know you will have realized that having NaP3 on my K3 has spoiled me and its
a 'must'...otherwise I will just leave my KX3 as a QRP rig only and forget
about the KXPA100 operation.

Because this discussion has begun, I think I will set up again on the bench and

Re: [Elecraft] Split receiving and 2 ears

2019-03-01 Thread Rick WA6NHC
I can give you a scenario  that may make it easier to understand; this
presumes you have the sub rx installed.

The DX is staying on one TX frequency, put that in the VFO A, leave it
alone.  Have your TX set to split on VFO B.  Go into split RX so you can
hear both; using the VFO B to listen to the station that the DX is
working now (in your right ear).

Once you determine (by tracking/listening) to the direction the DX is
listening (up, down or not) to work the pileup, you put the VFO B on
your intended 'attack' point.  At this time, you can hear what is there,
plus the DX.  (This is where a bandscope REALLY pays off, MUCH simpler.)

Presuming the DX fades and you need more signal to hear, you turn off
split and you're listening only to the DX (VFO A) while VFO B is ready
for split TX.

If you're listening split for another reason, you make the frequency you
need to hear alone in VFO A by pushing the A/B button, then turn off
split, two buttons max.

Mike,

Certainly, put the frequency you want to listen to into VFO A (unless it
is already there), and then drop out of SPLIT. Either a one or two
button operation.

Re: [Elecraft] [ELECRAFT] KPA500 NEW OWNER QUESTIONS.......

2019-03-01 Thread Don Wilhelm

In this discussion about ALC, I have to inject a bit of fact.
The Elecraft transceivers K2/K3/K3S/KX2/KX3 use a power control system
that is different from all other amateur transceivers, and unless there
is a problem with the transceiver, there is no power overshoot. In
fact, after a band change or a power setting change, the RF starts at a
low level and builds up to the power knob setting after a dit time or a
few syllables on voice.

That means amplifier ALC is not necessary, and if used should never be
used for power level control (doing that will cause distortion).

W8JI - Tom Rauch is responding to operation with most transceivers
driving the amplifier. With the Elecraft transceivers, the amplifier's
ALC indicator should never come on unless there is an amplifier fault
condition - high SWR, no antenna, etc.

Tom W8JI should know - he designed several of the Ameritron amplifiers.

Operated properly, there is no need for ALC at all, especially with
those amplifiers employing cathode or grid detection of overload. For
the amplifiers with more sophisticated fault detection, connecting the
ALC line to the driving transceiver is OK because it allows the
amplifier to shut down (or reduce power) the transceiver if a fault is
detected.

As Tom pointed out in at the end of his article, ALC should not be used
as a power control mechanism - doing so will only lead to distortion.

This is John Saxon, K5ENQ, in Pearland, TX, and I have experienced what appears
to be the identical symptoms.  Also have contacted support, got some
suggestions, tried them to no avail (mostly dealing with possible rf grounding
issues).  Like you, it may operate perfectly for hours or days, then later I
need to ATU and I get the same results as yours when yours fails.  My serial

also experience these somewhat intermittent failures when loading into a dummy
load on my bench.

I am sorry I have nothing useful to convey, other than that you are not alone

If anyone does come up with suggestions/solutions, please broadcast to group as
there are now at least 2 folks with what appears to be the same issue(s).

 Good day

Late last year, my K3 (no 6957) developed a fault.  The symptoms were:
1. No power output when keying the rig
2. TX LED on when keyed, (sidetone generated in CW mode)
3. Single bar showing on the RF power meter, whatever scale, ie 0 - 10 or 0
- 100
4. ATU tune command: relays clicking, TX LED on, no power output, no
indication on SWR meter; two horizontal dashes in the VFO A display area
where normally one would see the resolving SWR; in VFO B area 5.0W is
indicated
5. TX gain calibration failed on 5W and 50W;  mW TX calibration gain OK

I contacted Elecraft Support who suspected a failure of the LPA PA
transistor(s) and I shipped the rig to Watsonville where Q4 on the LPA board
was found to be dead.  Q4 and Q5 were replaced, re-biased and tested.

On getting the rig back, the same symptoms were present, but lasted only a
short while and the rig then performed normally, enough to have a couple of
QSOs, but then failed.  Since then the same symptoms have been present
intermittently.  I asked a friend who also has a K3 to try the rig to make
sure I was not doing something silly.  For about 20 minutes after switch on
the symptoms were present, then for no apparent reason the rig performed
normally for approximately 10 minutes before failing again.  We were testing
by repeatedly invoking ATU tune functions on different bands. Since then,
the rig will work or not work on switch on; it has worked flawlessly for
several hours but sometimes will present only the listed symptoms for
several hours after switch on.

When it is working, it all works, specifically the TX gain calibration
completes normally

After several days of performing normally, I relocated the rig to my
alternative operating location; it did not work, with the same symptoms.

Elecraft Support has been as exemplary as ever, but they are loth for me to
return the rig when it may well sit on the test bench being smug and
behaving normally.  It seems to me that the possibilities are  (i) a dry
solder joint (ii) a loose connection or (iii) a component on the verge of
failing.  I think I should next dismantle and reassemble the rig to try to
exclude option (ii), and perhaps find either (i) or (iii), although needle
and haystack comes to mind...  Has anyone suffered similar problems and
found a solution, or can someone advise where I should concentrate my
search?
