[Elecraft] Configuration suggestions 1st Elecraft

2019-12-19 Thread Jim McLaughlin
I am working on developing a portable rig with the heart of the
project being a new DX3 w/ panadpter

   - Would like to buy "made in america"
   - I would like to minimize or avoid the concept of upgrading at a later
   date
   - I would like 2 meter capability included
   - The rig would be stand alone portable
   - DX before CW

Any suggestions, do's and dont's would be appreciated.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Utility vs. RemoteRig?

2019-12-19 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

Sounds like outdated design to me. The K4 should have more internal
horsepower so remotely sending firmware will be easier.

Also not a fan of unpublished APIs.

On Thu, 19 Dec 2019, Tom wrote:

I would think that the remote rig controller relies on Ascii commands and
not binary transfers. It would be quite a risk to your radio to use any
product to transfer firmware or undocumented commands.
If you must do this remotely, then you should have a PC at the remote site
and then connect via something like TeamViwer.

You may need to upgrade the connectors. The issue can be created by
inconsistent contact and corruption of the firmware. Reload and replace the

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Battery

The K3 DOES INDEED have an internal battery. It is a coin cell and is for the
clock. All memories are stored in non-volital memory. And there is no way
to tell if the battery is on its way out other than clock not keeping good
time.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Audio

2019-12-19 Thread Keith Trinity WE6R
Do a switch test, (Config menu, "SW TEST") you should get a smooth sweep
of numbers, about 002 thr 236.

If erratic in spots, then the Pot could have been knocked in.
Pull Front Panel and look at the back of it, there are some tabs that
hold it together and sometimes you can bend them tight and fix.
Look at the board going inside the pot from where the wires are
soldered, could be cracked.
Also look to see that the extension wires coming up from the board to
Pot are soldered good.

If all looks good, try tuner cleaner.
Otherwise replace; E520015

If the test numbers are _always_ good and smooth, then save your config,
EE INIT (parameter initialization) and see if that fixed it.

If it fixed it, then load a known-good saved config file.
If EE INIT did not fix then you can re-load the file you just saved and
look for anything else, like cracked traces or something touching those
lines.

The battery in the K3 is ONLY for keeping the Real Time Clock alive, and

There is an Elecraft Memory Editor for K3, K3S, KX2, and KX3. It is
Windows-only.

https://elecraft.com/pages/elecraft-frequency-memory-editor-software

DL2RUM wrote a Mac-only memory editor.

I’ve heard that the Elecraft command language is based on the Kenwood commands,
so a program for Kenwood radios might work. The commands are documented in the

Re: [Elecraft] Applause for KPA-1500

2019-12-19 Thread kd4iz
And I will second Bob's comment about the KPA500/KAT500.

In line with the "plays well with others" marketing theme about all of the
Elecraft amps, it is a seamless and stellar performer with some of the ICOM
radios. I use it with both the 7300 and 7100 here. ICOM's use of a "different"
ATU interface language is not a help, but is also not a hinderance if you
understand those differences. My antenna system has similar capabilities to
what he describes.

In my dreams... would be great to own a K4, but that will not happen unless I
win the lottery... So I couldn't be more pleased with my used KPA500/KAT500
combo as I have been using them.

Last I knew, the KX3 Utility at least on Mac did not support editing

It also seems that there is no specification of the memory access

[Elecraft] K3 Audio

2019-12-19 Thread Larry Boekeloo
I have a K3, serial #5278, that's had an receive audio issue for almost as
long as I've owned it.

When I turn the AF gain nearly or completely counter clockwise, the audio
goes to full volume. The only way to fix the problem, is to quickly turn
the AF gain back up and down a few times. Many times, I'll want to turn
the audio all the way to answer the phone or talk to someone in the shack,
and the audio goes to full volume.

Many times, if I reload the DSP software, the issue goes away for a few
months. I have the latest software loaded.

Anyone else have this problem? Maybe the AF gain pot needs to be replaced?

[Elecraft] K2 Fixed Audio Output Board

2019-12-19 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen

Hello all,

Over the past few months, I have received numerous requests from my K2
customers to provide a fixed level audio output (independent of the AF
gain control) for using the K2 with the various digital modes. I took
the design set forth by Don Wilhelm, W3FPR and Tom Hammond, N0SS (SK)
and put together kits with a couple of my adaptations.

This is a full kit with everything needed to build and install the Fixed
Audio Output Board complete with wire and speaker cable to connect the
board to your K2. An RCA jack is provided to mount to the rear panel of
the K2 for the audio output.

Having a fixed level audio output makes using the K2 for digital mode
operations much more convenient in that audio levels can be set once at
the soundcard input and eliminates the tweaking of the AF Gain control
to get the correct level each time used. It also allows the user to
monitor the K2 audio during operation.

Full details about the kits and ordering are available on my website:
https://www.w8fgu.com/k2_fixedaudio.html

For those not interested in a full kit version, the total bill of
materials with vendors is listed in my installation instructions pdf
file. I ordered enough parts to make up 25 kits. I have about 20 left.
If I receive more interest than the 20 I have left, I will certainly
order more inventory.

73,
Dave, W8FGU

Bravo to that.Although I do not have a KPA1500, I do have a KPA500, KAT500,
P3, and K3S. With three antennas connected to the KAT500 I easily work 160M
through 6M as though I have a 500 watt transceiver and a broadband antenna
system. Yes, it is a trouble free system and one that is a delight to own and
operate.

Thank you Wayne, Eric and the Elecraft staff.

[Elecraft] Applause for KPA-1500

2019-12-19 Thread N4ZR
Coming up to my one-year anniversary with this amp, and feel the need to
applaud.  Thanks to great support from Eric, Dick and Bob, my
K3/KPA-1500 combination now feels like a single, 1500-watt transceiver.
It is just so darned simple to operate, and trouble-free.  When you have
compromise antennas like I do these days, it is a real pleasure to run
trouble-free 1.5 KW - life's way too short for less.

Re: [Elecraft] Linux KX3 memory editor

2019-12-19 Thread Thorsten Fricke

Hi Wayne,

Am 17.12.19 um 21:44 schrieb Wayne Chandler:

I recently bought KX3 shack in a pack, very happy I did.

I use Linux and CQRLOG.  I don't use Windows or Wine, no exceptions.
I'm looking for software to read, edit, save frequency memories using
Linux only.  No Windows or Wine.  Any recommendations?

Can't this be done with the KX3 Utility from Elecraft directly? At least
for my KX2 there is a native Linux version available for download. As I
realized yesterday, even for 64bit.

Thanks,

Wayne

Kind regards and 73
