[Elecraft] KPA-500 failure

2019-12-25 Thread Mike Maloney
Anyone else have their KPA-500 crash on power ON?   All LED's briefly flash
then all dead.  Main fuses good.

FedEx will deliver to the PO loading dock directly if the recipient's
address is a PO Box. UPS will not, but will deliver to the PO dock if
the PO's street address is used. Many other carriers have a
"partnership" with the USPS, delivering to a USPS regional mail center
and then using the USPS to finish the job.

Re: [Elecraft] Upgrading the Shack

2019-12-25 Thread Edward R Cole
This topic probably worn out. I ran a small ham radio business and
used USPS to domestic and international destinations with good
results (most of the time). There was one shipment to the UK that
was sent to Canada, and another to Germany was fowarded by funkpost
to Saudia Arabia (fortunately was returned after a week to Germany
for deliver in-country).

Main reason to chose USPS Priority Mail was cost. UPS/FedEX
typically charge 150% what it costs with USPS. But funny thing is
seeing the UPS or FedEx trucks show up to deliver the US Mail to/from
our local PO.

BTW overnight to AK takes 2-days; 2-day delivery is always 3-days,
etc.  Deliveries only make it on-time to the Anchorage Airport depot;
takes another day for delivery by truck (even to Anchorage addresses).

I'm no longer in-business. WA2ODO-Pete Manfre quit making preamps
last July. I stopped making DEMI kits and W6PQL amp kits a couple years ago.

Hope everyone is having a pleasant and joyous holiday. Maybe the K4
will arrive by Valentines?? I'm happy with my upgraded K3/10, KX3,
and KXPA100. Bucket truck is scheduled to work on my 6m-eme array
after the holidays (getting new rotator, digital encoder, and thrust bearing).

Re: [Elecraft] Upgrading the Shack

2019-12-25 Thread Robert Rennard via Elecraft
FedEx –

Put a failed delivery sticker on the gate an eighth of a mile from our porch.
Claimed they did so the next 2 days, but they did not. When I called they
told me to pick up the item 30 miles away in another town. Asked them to
deliver to our town which they agreed to do and claimed it would be at FedEx
Office before Noon. I went there and the clerk laughed and told me it might be
Noon in Hawaii when they got it.

UPS
Does not ring the intercom bell at the roadside gate, leaves the parcel in a
large plastic bag which flaps in the wind to alert the poachers. If I leave
the gate open, they bring the parcel onto the porch, do not ring the doorbell,
and do not put the parcel in a protective bag.

USPS
Sent a cashiers check for $1500 by Priority Mail to get a soil characteristics
report done for inspection by the county engineer before erecting a tower. The
soils engineer drilled a 25 foot deep test hole, created a report, and billed
me for the $1500. When asked, they said they’d never seen the check, they
called USPS who said it was delivered to their office on Saturday to which they
replied that the multi-tenant building was locked, They asked USPS to find out
what happened and the USPS response was that the delivery carrier was no longer
in their employ.

DHL
Shipped some electronics from San Jose to San Diego overnight. DHL claimed
that the forest fire forbid them making the delivery. When I asked them how
far away the fire was from the downtown recipient, they went more stupid.

Good luck

Re: [Elecraft] UPS vs FedEx

2019-12-25 Thread Doug Turnbull
Dear OMs and YLs,
I am sorry to hear of these problems but let me tell you that my
KPA1500 was delivered from California to Ireland in four days. It and all
the packaging were in perfect condition.I paid the UPS man with my
credit card when the delivery arrived to our door. This payment was for
all the legitimate EU and Irish taxes. It was all very easy and most
satisfactory. I have only good to say for UPS.I know a FedEx driver
and have only good to say for them as well. So it is best to give good and
bad experiences.

2019-12-25 Thread Walter Underwood
I don’t see how the delivery companies are keeping up. Parcel volume doubled in
four years and I expect it has been going at that rate for a decade or more.
I’m not at all surprised that they have problems. This article says that
carriers shipped 2,760 parcels per second in 2018 worldwide.

Don,

Thanks, I'll work on that tomorrow and let you know how it goes.

Merry Christmas!!

Neil,

Your readings on the PLL range test show that Q19 is marginal. Q19 is
not oscillating properly at the high end of the PLL range.

The first thing to try is a small capacitor (12 to 15pF) from the
source of Q19 to ground.  You can easily mount the capacitor between
pins 1 and 12 of U4.  You can use one of the capacitors from the K2
kit and request a replacement from supp...@elecraft.com

If that does not allow proper frequencies for the PLL Range Test, then
get a replacement Q19 from pa...@elecraft.com.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Hi,

Started to do the Align/Test Pt II, and properly saw the correct
frequency of 12090 +/- 30 kHz.   Tried the next part to adjust the
Reference Oscillator using my other K2 as the receiver and was able to
hear the oscillator at 3999, but C22 would not adjust to a
zero-beat. OK ... so it was close for the time being, so I figured
I'd use my KX3 to verify it later.  Moved on to the range test.   The
Band- and Band+ buttons did not affect the display.

Dug into the list archives, and saw a number of messages from Don to
check the solder joints, alignment, and type of D16, D17, R19, and
L31.    I realized that somehow I missed installing R19.   So I
installed the resistor, then restarted the alignment.   This time when I
switched to CAL FCTR, the rig did not display the expected frequency of
12090, but  a frequency of 3560 or so, flickering between readings.
However, when I pressed the Band- button, it changed to a steady 12084,
but when the Band+ was pressed, back to the 3560 flickering.

That stinks but I have had similar issues with both/all carriers.  FedEx
can't reliably find our house after many called to the local station and
many many complaints.  We had to get a box at a UPS store,  irony..
where we have our packages sent.  UPS will leave packages at the top of

[Elecraft] SP3 A/B Switch Problem

2019-12-25 Thread Ferris Jennings
My SP3 A/B switch has an issue. I use the supplied speaker cable from my K3S
to the speaker A jack. I listen with the switch in the A position, but
frequently push it in to the B position as a convenient mute. Switching back
to A to listen, the sound is somewhat muted scratchy; cutting in and out as
I wiggled the switch. I push the switch in and out a few times, and it
returns to normal. I've switched the cable to the B port, but it's the same
issue.

I removed the side panel, thinking I could shoot a bit of DeoxIT into the
switch, but it appears that the switch is sealed, so I canned that idea.

Any suggestions on an easy fix or should I order up a new switch from
Elecraft and replace it?

Thanks in advance

When my Concept 2 rower was dropped off damaged; I was told by UPS that if a
heavy item is not shipped Freight it will be damaged. The why is, regular
shipping is handled by hand thus gets damaged, freight is by pallet and fork

I have a Fluke DVM also. I gulped when I bought it some 30+ years ago, but it
was a good decision. It’s like a Snap-On wrench. It just feels right and never

That's for "bonding". Where do you pick up "ground" - at the

2019-12-25 Thread Mike VE3YF

Hi Joe:

Normally I would have used USPS, I have liked them in the past, however
due to the weight and cost it was not a good option. I wouldn't be so
ticked off, but my package went to customs 3 times, repeated billing me
of taxes and no less than 12 exceptions and this is all after the
guaranteed delivery date, and by the looks of it, I might see it maybe
31 Dec, which is over a week after the promised date. They also don't
allow people to pickup their packages in person, tried twice.

Mike,

and maybe they can also get a FedEx shipping account as I

Unfortunately, other than USPS, UPS is the best of a bad lot.

FedEx mess up more deliveries than they get right in my
experience. I've had them try to charge *China* duties on
shipments coming from Europe - simply because some clerk
can't be bothered to read the commercial invoice. It is not
unusual for them to charge significant processing and "advance
payment" fees on import shipments for which there is no duty
due, etc. I've had them hold packages for payment requiring me
to drive completely across the Orlando metro area (3 hour round
trip with significant tolls) only to have nothing due and the
counter person simply hand me the package.

5B4AGN and I recently spent most of a week trying to sort out the
import of cases for his most recent multi-band BPF group buy simply
because FedEx's customs clerks did not read the commercial invoice
for the shipment. Thus they were unable to properly classify the
products and the country of origin - even though both were clearly
stated on the invoice/packing list.

FedEx may have been the best at one time, but their customer service
has been circling the drain for at least two to three years.

Now, with FedEx acquiring the US (and perhaps CA) end of both TNT
and DHL the options for shipment from Europe to the US are being
significantly reduced.

I ship more and more items via USPS Priority with added insurance as
necessary.    It is faster and less costly and more reliable than Fed-X
or UPS.   I shipped my K3S to Elecraft via USPS Priority on a Tuesday
and it arrived at Elecraft on Thursday. They repaired it, updated it and
sent it back by UPS Ground.   It sat in the Distribution center in Ohio
for 5 days.  Total time back to me was 11 days in transit.    The
daughter shipped a large box via UPS Ground from Orlando to us in middle
TN.  It sat in Memphis for 5 days, thus was in transit for 11 days and
only a week later than originally scheduled.

Oh, there wasn't a K4 under my Christmas tree.   Did you get one?  Maybe

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Alignment & Test Part II

2019-12-25 Thread Don Wilhelm

Neil,

Your readings on the PLL range test show that Q19 is marginal. Q19 is
not oscillating properly at the high end of the PLL range.

The first thing to try is a small capacitor (12 to 15pF) from the source
of Q19 to ground. You can easily mount the capacitor between pins 1 and
12 of U4. You can use one of the capacitors from the K2 kit and request
a replacement from supp...@elecraft.com

If that does not allow proper frequencies for the PLL Range Test, then
get a replacement Q19 from pa...@elecraft.com.

Merry Christmas everyone.

hear the oscillator at 3999, but C22 would not adjust to a
zero-beat. OK ... so it was close for the time being, so I figured

I was a UPS driver for 27 years. I'm sorry you are having problems with
your delivery.

That being said, I have to say that it is the busiest time of the year for
delivery companies. You may have a vision of your package sitting on a
shelf, all by itself. That is not the case! your package is there in the
customs house with 10's of thousands of other packages. The system is
overwhelmed. I doubt FedX could really do any better ant this time of year.
I know you are excited to get your new amp, but please have some patience.

There are currently hundreds of UPS and FedX drivers on the big road (on
Christmas day) trying to get things to where they need to be.

[Elecraft] UPS vs FedEx

2019-12-25 Thread Rose
Quite the opposite here ...

I deal with multiple vendors in my business and simply won't buy from any
that ships via the PTA company FedEx.

Re: [Elecraft] Upgrading the Shack

2019-12-25 Thread Mike VE3YF

Update:

The KPA1500 left Elecraft on 20 Dec 2019, and arrived in Mount Hope,
Ontario 21 Dec 2019, with a guaranteed delivery to me on 23 Dec 2019.

And the KPA1500 is still in Mount Hope, Ontario, due to no fault of
Elecraft, Canada Customs, Weather and myself.

UPS is the most useless carrier I have ever dealt with, and after
clearing customs they would not allow the KPA1500 to be picked up in
person even after taxes etc had been paid. Actually they wanted taxes
paid prior to going into Canada Customs. Just a note for Elecraft, I
will be sending a complete timetable of all the events that have
transpired, and maybe they can also get a FedEx shipping account as I
have had nothing but great success dealing with FedEx.

UPS says I might see the package on 31 Dec 2019, heavy emphasis on might.

The Christmas Grinch arrived at this shack.

Hopefully everyone is having a Merry Christmas...
