[Elecraft] Smoke Detectors
Radio waves are non-Ionizing. I hope we all know that and know one another know that. However the near field is an electrical field. The smoke detector compares the ionization between two chambers, both with the same radioactive source. One is exposed to the environment (smoke) and the other is not while both have the same radioactive source. An imbalance in the two chambers indicates smoke impeding ionizing radiation. It is triggered by a very small amount of smoke, barely visible to the eye. The means of detection is electronic and can be affected by a strong near field. Most of the smoke detectors I know of here in the US are the ion type. It may also be that other electronics in the detector are affected by the near field. That would be another theory but I think that affecting the detector itself is more likely. -73- W1GCF Geoff __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Well, regular reflector email works well, and is my preference If it is changed, I will go down "kicking and screaming". Threads lose something for me - subjects change, but participants do not change the subject line, so things get mixed up. If you want threading a good email client like Thunderbird will give you that option if you choose. You can also, read the email on Nabble which can display in threaded format. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/28/2020 6:25 PM, Louandzip via Elecraft wrote: I'm a bit surprised to find the reflector still going. Well you saved up some fun for later. I have with exception of the 1500w amp and k4, I have everthing else. Whoops, I do need a 2 Meter Xverter, have the 6 meter one. Still great fun with K2. The receive works side by side equal with my K3S. And having built all the options, it’s a high performance rig and Its fun to make the same contacts as all the others out there. Re: [Elecraft] K2 upgrade kit sequence
Doug, You are exactly right. If you follow the K2 history, you will find that the K2 A TO B kit was issued to pull all the prior mods together as well as providing instructions about the best sequence to use when doing a full upgrade. That happened at the same time the B level boards were laid out which incorporated all the prior mods (SN3000 and above). So anyone contemplating a full K2 upgrade, start with the K2ATOBKT and install the other kits when the A to B instructions call for them. One other benefit is that the K2ATOBKT instructions tell you when to do the alignment instead of doing the alignment after each of the mod kits. The A to B mod will not quite get you to a post 3000 SN equivalent unless you also change the IF crystals (not necessary if the SN being upgraded is above 2560 which was when the crystals were changed). That leaves only the K2 Keying Waveshape mod which appeared near SN 4600, but the kit has been discontinued for lack of a leaded PIN diode. New K2 kits use an SMD diode on a carrier board, but so far, that SMD diode has not made it into the mod kit instructions - yes, I know the new KPA100 kit calls for it as a prerequisite. It will also not deal with changes to the KSB2 (the PSK mod) and the KSB2 crystals and bandwidth change to 2.4kHz. Check the resistors on your KSB2 board against the mod instructions to determine if you already have it installed, it was put into production early on. Don't forget to upgrade the KPA100 too, the KPA100UPKT will 'do it all', there is no need for the KPA100MDKT since the parts are included in the KPA100UPKT. So, there is the FULL story - I have upgraded many, many K2s. Anytime I had an older K2 in for repair, I gave the owner the option of upgrading or just repairing - almost all chose to upgrade. And my upgraded Field Test K2 SN 0020 performs as well as a new one. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/28/2020 4:24 PM, Douglas Hagerman via Elecraft wrote: For anyone considering updating an old K2, a small point that may not be clear in the instructions is that the K2ATOBKT is sort of a "top level" kit that "controls" the other mod kits. Those instructions call out the other kits (e.g., "Now follow the instructions supplied with BFOMDKT") in the appropriate sequence. There are many SDR receiver options, starting around $30, and with nice products in the $100 - $300 range. All run on the USB port of a computer (mostly Windoze), and cover relatively wide spectrum. Re: [Elecraft] k2 spurious
David and all, I am a little late chiming in here, but all David's points are correct except for a caution on one. The alternate winding ratio for T4 should never be used with the KSB2 or the KPA100 installed. It is OK for power in CW kept below 5 watts. If the PA is operated above 5 watts, it becomes more and more inefficient as the power is increased. I have repaired several for buyers of a used K2 who had problems developing full output and observed that the current draw at 10 watts was quite high, sometimes causing HiCur messages. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/26/2020 8:43 PM, David Woolley wrote: I'd expect the actual PA collector impedance to be a lot higher than the impedance reflected through the transformer, as transistors and FETs are, to a first approximation, current sources, although the negative feedback would actually make the reverse termination impedance much lower than that from the transformer. A hint that is the case is the option for different winding ratio if you are always going to use a lower maximum power. Maximising the voltage swing increases the efficiency. The alternative ratio doesn't transform the filter input impedance down so much. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 No Power Out (TX LED Does Not Come On)
Try shorting the RCA connector on the amp and see if the TX light comes on. Load the KPA1500 utility and look at the log file. Look on the KPA1500 and see what frequency it thinks the amp is on. If it is out of band it will not TX. That is where I would start. Also check that all cables are seated properly.
