I use CocoaModem, which has a pretty good spectral display, perfectly adequate
for adjusting the filters on the K2.

[Elecraft] Miniature version of AX1 whip

2021-04-19 Thread Wayne Burdick
I'm always trying to further shrink my KX2 station, especially for hand-held
operation.

Recently I've been playing with a miniature base loading coil for the the AX1
whip. It's very rugged, but also really small:

   Length = 2.0" (1/3rd of the AX1)
   Weight = 0.7 oz   (1/3rd of the AX1)

It takes up almost no room in a go-bag, making it a great backup for other
antennas. Wind load is also greatly reduced -- that will help when using the
AXB1 bipod.

Compared to the AX1 it will have a somewhat reduced max power rating (probably
10 W), and it only covers one band. On the other hand, it could be built for
any band from 20 to 6 meters, and disassembles into two pieces like the AX1.

I consider it experimental at this point, and I'd love to get some feedback on
the concept. We'll have some prototypes to send out sometime in the near future
to a few volunteer testers.

Please contact me directly if you're interested.

73,
Wayne

Re: [Elecraft] KBPF3A switching frequencies and performance

2021-04-19 Thread ab2tc
Hi Russ,

Your response made *very* curious so I checked out my own K3S. I can confirm
the two switchover frequencies you mention (1700 and 3300kHz), but observe
at most a couple of dB change when crossing the boundaries. I use an
external panadapter (LP-PAN/NaP3 connected to IF-OUT) so I can easily see
the same stations and noise while tuning across the boundaries. On the
1700kHz boundary the signals are a couple, maybe 3dB stronger when below
1700kHz. So it sounds to me that the filters in your KBPF3A are not being
switched in when it is supposed to be used. The KBPF3 needs to be enabled
(set to "nor") in the configuration menu. Have you checked that?

Hmm, I neglected to carefully read the last part of your post. It sounds
like your KBPF3A might be working above 4210kHz so may be just the 2 lowest
bands are defective. If you look at the schematic you see that those two
bands use the same filter but with some components switched in and out by
another relay (K2). So that could narrow the problem down to one relay (K1)
not operating. Is this a *new* problem or has it been like this since you
got the K3 or installed the KBPF3A?

[Elecraft] KPA500 Question

2021-04-19 Thread Bob McGraw

I'd say the switching FETs have failed.    Correctly operating, there is
no measurable attenuation in the receive line when in OPER or STBY modes.

As to T/R switching, make sure the amp is  in receive and not in
transmit when your radio is in receive.   Any of the items in the amp
display preceded with a * indicates the amp is in transmit mode.   If
so, something is pulling the KEY line to ground.

Message-ID:<001001d7349a$f0a01570$d1e04050$@gmail.com>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I just purchased a used KPA500 (SN 0456) from a close friend. The amp was
just back to the factory for several repairs and was thoroughly tested. The
report reads, "KPA500 #0456 meets or exceeds all factory specifications." My
friend unboxed the amp and made several QSOs to be sure all issues were
fixed. He then personally delivered the amp to my QTH.
Over the weekend I got the amp added to my operating position and was quite
surprised to find that input signals are attenuated significantly when the
amp is switched from STBY to OPER. No, this is NOT the issue with having the
aux cable and the PA key line connected at the same time. This is with NO PA
key, and NO aux cable connected. The amp has no connection but RF input and
output. It is independent of band. This is with a matched antenna, band
switched manually with the front panel buttons. When I engage OPER the input
signal is attenuated by ~20 dB.
On the TX side, the amp is fine. On most bands I get full rated output into
a dummy load with approx. 20 Watts of drive from the K3.
I noticed on the service report, one of the tests was, "Tested receive
attenuation and IMD." I'm curious about "receive attenuation." This would
seem to be related to my problem. Looking at the block diagram, I surmise
something in the TR switch is malfunctioning.
Before I bug an already-overloaded Elecraft support, I am open to
suggestions. Am I missing something obvious?
TIA es 73,
Jim - WS6X
P.S. Yes, I have read the manual, and scoured the archives. The only thing I
can find regarding input attenuation in the OPER mode involves incorrect
cabling.

Buck,
I have had the IC-7610 and KAT500/KPA500 for almost three years and they are a very nice
pair (or trio..). The IC-7610 doesn't "control" the KAT500 per se. Changing
bands/frequencies on the IC-7610 doesn't cause any response from the KAT500. Only when
the IC-7610 transmits does the tuner detect (sense) the RF and then adjust the capacitors
and inductors to match to the current antenna. An Elecraft transceiver, OTOH, does
communicate with the KAT500 (and KPA500) and changes bands/frequencies/antenna ports as
the bands and frequencies are changed.
The KPA500 responds the same way and changes bands by sensing transmit RF. You can build
a "band data" cable to interface the IC-7620 to the KP500 and it will, with
restrictions, follow the band selected by the IC-7610. The restriction is that Icom's
band data voltages do not support the WARC bands. As a result, both 24 mHz and 28 mHz
select 28mHz; both 18 mHz and 21 mHz select 21mHz. So, for all bands except WARC, the
KPA500 will follow band selections made on the IC-7610 (or almost any other Icom such as
the IC-7300, etc.).
I can send you a diagram of the band data cable if you would like. It is only marginally
useful and most ops of non Elecraft gear seem to just let the KPA500 (and KAT500) RF
sense the transmitted RF to make necessary selections. Be sure to read the KAT500 manual
section regarding "training" your tuner.

Re: [Elecraft] Controlling KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7610

2021-04-19 Thread kd4iz
Buck,

I have a similar setup with an IC-7300 and my KAT500/KPA500 combo. It does
not auto band change before key up. It does change on a quick, low power
tune however. IIRC I made a not so recent inquiry to Elecraft yielded the
explanation that my experience was correct. If I can find the message I will
post the text.

As Ken WA2LBI indicated in his message, what I did subsequently was to
jettison the "ICOM AH4 cable" set up (KAT500 Owners Manual, pg 8 to 10) and
just used a generic Analog radio configuration. The frequency sensing
capabilities of the ATU and amp do the job fast and efficiently. Currently I
use a 4-way RCA audio switch to select the keyline sig from one of the HF
radios I use and a remote antenna/rig selector (MFJ 4724) to route the
selected rig to the amp. The KAT500 remembers my preferred HF antenna for
the band I have chosen to use so the antenna side of the MFJ is used to
switch other coaxial feeds.

Re: [Elecraft] Controlling KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7610

2021-04-19 Thread Ken Winterling
The cable between the IC-7610 and the KAT500 does two things. First, it
supplies power to the KAT500 so it turns on when the IC-7610 is powered up.
Second, it allows the TUNER button on the IC-7610 to cause the '7610 to
switch to CW mode and transmit an approximate 10W signal. That, in turn,
causes the KAT500 to attempt to find a matching solution to the selected
antenna. You shouldn't need one of those "tuner plugs" as that function is
built into the KAT500 when connected by the AH-4 Molex cable wiring. The
above assumes that you have the KAT500 connected to the IC-7610 ANT1
antenna port.

If your KAT500 is not working that way with the IC-7610 TUNER button then I
would recheck the cable wiring and verify that the KAT500 is connected to
ANT1 on the IC-7610. If those are good it is possible there is a problem
with the KAT500.

Good luck!

Re: [Elecraft] Controlling KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7610

2021-04-19 Thread Buck
Auto-sense works. I just don't understand why Icom/Elecraft would even
suggest hooking up the molex connector to the KAT500 if it doesn't do
anything. It is a waste of time.

I got the W2GNY plug to fool the 7610 into transmitting as 10 signal and
it works. I guess I will stick with that.

Re: [Elecraft] Controlling KAT500/KPA500 with Icom 7610

2021-04-19 Thread Ken Winterling
Buck,

I have had the IC-7610 and KAT500/KPA500 for almost three years and they
are a very nice pair (or trio..). The IC-7610 doesn't "control" the KAT500
per se. Changing bands/frequencies on the IC-7610 doesn't cause any

The KPA500 responds the same way and changes bands by sensing transmit RF.
You can build a "band data" cable to interface the IC-7620 to the KP500 and
it will, with restrictions, follow the band selected by the IC-7610. The
restriction is that Icom's band data voltages do not support the WARC
bands. As a result, both 24 mHz and 28 mHz select 28mHz; both 18 mHz and 21
mHz select 21mHz. So, for all bands except WARC, the KPA500 will follow
band selections made on the IC-7610 (or almost any other Icom such as the

I can send you a diagram of the band data cable if you would like. It is
only marginally useful and most ops of non Elecraft gear seem to just let
the KPA500 (and KAT500) RF sense the transmitted RF to make necessary
selections. Be sure to read the KAT500 manual section regarding "training"

Re: [Elecraft] KBPF3A switching frequencies and performance

2021-04-19 Thread Russ Tobolic via Elecraft
 Hi Ben:
You had me curious with your request.  I started to check my KBPF3 (modified to
the "A") and noticed something that now bothers me.  I tried going down from
160M and it appears that the switch over to the AM broadcast band occurs
precisely at 1700,000  Kc.  When I tune to  1.69 the relays click.  But the
anomaly(?) I am seeing at the switchover point is a big drop in the signal
level.  At my QTH during the daytime the nominal noise level at 1700.000 Kc is
about S7.  When I switch to 1.69 the noise level drops to S2.  At the high
end the switchover occurs at 2109.999+ with a drop in the noise level from
S9+10 to S3.  I don't use the K3 for listening to AMBCB but only in the case of
checking my 160M  receiving loops with some stations high in the AM Band.  I
checked on 80M and got similar results.  At the low side the switch occurred at
3299.999 with a drop in the noise level from S5 to S2.  On the high side the
switchover occurred at 4209.999+ but here the noise level increased from S4 to
S6. I don't know if this helps you any on at least these 2 bands.  If I get the
time I'll try to check the rest.  Now I'm bothered by the changes in signal
levels at the switchover points (ignorance is bliss).   I wonder if anyone else
has ever noticed this or do I have an issue with my KBPF3?
