[Elecraft] K3 For Sale

2022-01-29 Thread Greg Mitchell
My K3 is for sale (I'm now the proud owner of a K4). Rig works great. It's a
100W model, with the KSYN3A synthesizer upgrade (K3S) and the KIO3B USB
CAT/Soundcard (also from the K3S). It has the KXV3A transverter module as well
as 5 filters: 2.7khz, 2.4khz, 500hz, 400hz and 250hz. Sale is for the radio and
manual only (printed in a 3-ring binder). No mic or power cable. Asking $2100,
and I'll ship it anywhere in the lower-48 - if elsewhere, email me for shipping
quote. s/n is 5874.

Thanks and 73,
Greg KB1AWM

[Elecraft] Amps with K2

2022-01-29 Thread edauer
I have used W8FGU's amplifier keying system with a K2 and a KPA1500 and can
say it works just as advertised. The KPA1500 output is in the 200 - 225
watt range on CW (as I remember -- I did the tests a few months ago),
depending on band and K2 power setting; the TR switching time is fine for
fast break CW; and there is no discernible attenuation on receive. The amp
does not poll directly for frequency, but using N1MM and the KIO2 the
frequency for logging purposes is there with no fuss. The installation is
straightforward -- one small circuit board and then mount the board and an
RCA jack in an existing hole on the K2 rear deck and it's on the road.
Neat.

. . . There are a number of circuits documented out there for this purpose.
I also sell a kit for doing this on my website:
https://www.w8fgu.com/k2_trdriver.html. This circuit and kit was based on
one produced years ago by Tom Hammond, N0SS (SK). If you have the K60XV
module installed, then you can bring out the K60XV J2 pin 2 for this
purpose. I am doing exactly that on my K2. I mounted an RCA jack on the rear
panel and tied it to that pin.

The above will allow the K2 to drive an amp, but will not get you much
"integration". With our amplifier line, band switching can be automated with
a dit of RF from the K2. But other than that, tight integration like with
our newer transceivers is not there. The cables I am trying to develop will
attach to the K2's KIO2 AUX I/O port and provide keying. I have prototyped
one to work with the KXPA100 and it keys properly and allows RS-232 commands
to pass through the KXPA100 from the PC for control of the K2 by software
programs. The main issue with integrating the K2 with our amps is that there
is virtually no codes space left in the K2 firmware for having it
communicate and integrate with the other amps like it did with the KPA100.
So, things like amp power output and SWR will not be reflected on the K2
like it does with the KX2 & 3 when used with the KXPA100.. . .

Re: [Elecraft] RPN Calc App For Android

2022-01-29 Thread Mike Morrow
The HP-35 (1972) and the HP 35s (2007) are two radically different machines.

I was an EE undergrad at Georgia Tech when the HP-35 was introduced in 1972 at
$400 ($2750 in 2022).  Professors generally did not allow their use on tests
because so very few students (and professors) could afford them.

I have always preferred RPN-entry machines, but I could not afford one for more
than two years after graduation.

The finest pure RPN (not RPL) machine ever made is the HP-42S (1988-1995).  It
still brings prices above $300 on eBay and is worth it.

Thomas Okken's Free42 is the finest emulation of an HP RPN scientific
calculator that has ever been available.  It is available for all major phone
and computer platforms.  It's free, but donations are welcome and well deserved.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2022-01-29 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

It is easy to lose a mountain.  Mt. St. Helens is rarely visible
from here.  If there is any haze in the sky it is almost invisible.  In
the summer you need to know which bit of white is a mountain top, which
is a cloud, and which is the top of Mt. Rainier.  Tuesday's weather was
very nice.  50 degrees with humidity down to 60%, perfect for cutting
wood.  I moved, cut, split, and stacked until I was soaked.  Then I went
for a walk to cool down.  I hiked to Bacona Road, about a mile from
here.  When I turned around Mt. St. Helens dominated the landscape to
the northeast.  The sky was so clear and the snow line so low it seemed
huge.  The sun was an hour from setting which cast raking shadows with
golden highlights.  What a view.

More sunspots appeared this week, some groups are growing very
large.  2936 could send something our way.  Flux is above 100.
Propagation should be better than last week.  There won't be an active
storm to create so much noise.  But, as always, you never know until you
try.

Please join us on (or near):

7047 kHz at 0030z Monday  (4:30 PM PST Sunday)

Steel made from trout. The clear snow-filled river acting as foundry and

buildings, trains and tunnels. The Andrew Carnegie of Trout!

Hi Ken,

I service all of Elecraft's Classic Line of Products through my company

W8FGU Services, LLC and I am a part time employee of Elecraft doing the

same thing for them. I can assure you that discontinuing the KPA100 was

no arbitrary decision. As with most 20 year and older designs, part

availability becomes more and more of an issue with every passing year.

When we were not able to procure the finals anymore, I believe this was

one of the final straws. They stopped producing the finals a couple of

years ago as far as we can tell. There are some counterfeit versions on

the market and auction sites, but the are not up to spec. This combined

with other unavailable parts led to the demise of the KPA100. I worked

pretty hard with Wayne, Eric and our parts folks to come up with a

solution, but in the end, it was decided to discontinue it.

I am actively working on a project to create cables that will interface

the K2 with each of our amplifier products including the KXPA100. With

the addition of a keying line from the K2, you can form a basic

integration to most any amplifier. The basic 10 watt version does not

have an external keying line and would need a keying circuit added to

the K2 bring it out. There are a number of circuits documented out
there

for this purpose. I also sell a kit for doing this on my website:

https://www.w8fgu.com/k2_trdriver.html. This circuit and kit was based

on one produced years ago by Tom Hammond, N0SS (SK). If you have the

K60XV module installed, then you can bring out the K60XV J2 pin 2 for

this purpose. I am doing exactly that on my K2. I mounted an RCA jack
on

the rear panel and tied it to that pin.

The above will allow the K2 to drive an amp, but will not get you much

"integration". With our amplifier line, band switching can be automated

with a dit of RF from the K2. But other than that, tight integration

like with our newer transceivers is not there. The cables I am trying
to

develop will attach to the K2's KIO2 AUX I/O port and provide keying. I

have prototyped one to work with the KXPA100 and it keys properly and

allows RS-232 commands to pass through the KXPA100 from the PC for

control of the K2 by software programs. The main issue with integrating

the K2 with our amps is that there is virtually no codes space left in

the K2 firmware for having it communicate and integrate with the other

amps like it did with the KPA100. So, things like amp power output and

SWR will not be reflected on the K2 like it does with the KX2 & 3 when

used with the KXPA100.

For use with the KPA500 and KAT500 Power Combo and the KPA1500, I am

going to prototype similar style cables for those amps as well. The
good

thing we've found with the Power Combo is that you can set it up to
poll

for frequency info from the K2 so that you have automatic band
switching

and proper loading of ATU memories while tuning around with the K2 VFO.

The KPA1500 has the same capability but will require some modification

of the cable as it is not implemented the same way as the KPA500. At

this point the KXPA100 does not poll at all unless it recognizes the

XCVR as a KX2 or 3.

So, "full integration" may not be totally possible because of the lack

of code space in the K2. But I believe I can get some "nice to have"

integration like automatic band switching and ATU memory loading with

our amplifier line. I am working closely with my tech counter parts at

Elecraft to bring these cables to fruition soon we hope. Stay tuned...

Dave, W8FGU

and a note about whether any modifications were required. We're putting
together a database of these for customer reference.

Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] RPN Calc App For Android

2022-01-29 Thread Eric Garner
I use Droid48. It's a pretty faithful recreation of the HP48 and has a
pocket calculator style interface too (but it's still RPN)

Re: [Elecraft] K4HD Executive Summary Request -- strong signal performance

2022-01-29 Thread Victor Abell
Thank you for your explanation Wayne. You are correct; turning off the
noise blanker eliminates wide-band key clicks from strong, wide signals.

Trying to put numbers to your "Aggressive settings of the noise blanker,"
I set about to find the NB level at which the clicks became noticeable. To
my surprise, for the first strong signal I heard, I found NB levels of zero
and 25 produced clicks, but a level of 14 did not. For other strong signals I
heard over the next few days, a NB level of 0 always produced clicks, while
other levels had varying effects. In the end all I learned was that NB
levels were mostly unpredictable in how they produced signal artifacts,
except that they almost always did.

[Elecraft] KPXA-100 & K2 Integration?

2022-01-29 Thread KJ
Hello again all,
Can the KPXA-100 be fully integrated with the K2? Full QSK and so on? Appears
to be mostly for the KX3 and KX2.
My 2003 K2 has all the options.

I can't believe Elecraft discontinued the 100w amp for the K2. What do have
then?
A full featured, basically, QRP radio! These little 5 watt jobs are 1/8th the
size but maybe w/o all the bands and there all over the place for sale.

Should have bought the KPA-100 back then but the $$ weren't there!!
Anybody has one up for salelet me know

Thanks!! Ken
W2GIW, QRZ address is good.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Production Relase 28 and SWR display issues

2022-01-29 Thread Andy Durbin
" I wrote code to invalidate and dash my display of the serial data SWR based
on forward power level. "

That wasn't accurate. What I actually do is "dash" the SWR display if there
has been no TX on current TX frequency (+/- 500 Hz). I display X.XX if there
was a TX on current frequency but forward power level was lower that the value
assumed to give a valid SWR reading.

Yes, it's more complex than most SWR displays but I have a low tolerance for
misleading data.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Production Relase 28 and SWR display issues

2022-01-29 Thread Andy Durbin
"Here is what I've done for the test:

- bypass the internal KAT4 ATU
- de-tune my Palstar BT1500A external tuner for an SWR of about 1:2
- use the keyer to send in CW. SWR (bargraph in display) shows 1:2. Okay!
- use the MH4 to send in USB and say "h". SWR shows 1:2. Okay!
- use the MH4 to send in AM (carrier only). SWR shows 1:1. Not okay! (?)
- use the MH4 to send in AM and additionally say "h". SWR shows 1:2. Maybe
okay. (??)
- use the MH4 to send in FM (carrier only). SWR shows 1:2. Okay!
- use the TUNE butten in WSJT-X to send in DATA. SWR shows 1:1. Not okay!

In every mode, using the TUNE button of the K4 shows an SWR of 1:2. Okay!"

For each of the cases that gives misleading 1:1 indication - What is the
reading if you increase the output power?

Reason for the question is that KAT500 has an insensitive bridge and always
gives misleading 1:1 SWR reading at low power. I wrote code to invalidate and
dash my display of the serial data SWR based on forward power level. Perhaps a
similar issue in K4.

[Elecraft] K4 Production Relase 28 and SWR display issues

2022-01-29 Thread Ludwig Hechler

I have installed the production release R28.

My K4 (serial # 0223) has a built-in KAT4.

In early September 2021 I reported an issue with the
SWR bargraph display of my K4 to Elecraft support.
In some modes the SWR always shows 1:1 although
the real SWR is 1:2 or higher.

Rob from Elecraft Customer Support answered : "I was
able to reproduce that here. I have reported it to our
engineers as a bug. It should be fixed in an upcoming
release. I don't know if it will make it in the R23 release
which is coming out soon." Unfortunatly, it didn't make it
in R28. Is it planned for R29?

Here is what I've done for the test:

Okay!

I also placed a video of my problem at DropBox then. Here is the link again:
