[Elecraft] K-POD
I am going to be selling a K-POD that I bought used about a year ago. I have never programmed the device so all I know about it is that the LEDs light and when the knob is turned the vfo changes frequency. My main question is how much is it worth? I have the cables but do not have the user manual. Re: [Elecraft] Need help with kat500 utility
Hi Well I checked the antenna and it is just as before the problem. Is the capacitor setting normally checked by default? This setting was not chosen automatically. After I enabled the capacitor setting the tuner tuned immediately to a low SWR on the low end of the band. I noticed that now it is automatically chosen. This has been a nice study time to figure how this tuner works. It seems fine now. Thanks for the help all seems well. [Elecraft] D-104 Element Replacement
I am often amazed how little some hams know about microphones. You can purchase any number of compatible dynamic microphone cartridges, or electret condenser capsules, and fit them into a D-104 head shell. I buy a number of excellent dynamic replacement cartridges on eBay for less than $10, and purchase suitable electret condenser capsules for as low as 10 for $1, including shipping in some cases! Research and shop around and you will find all sorts of inexpensive replacement elements that sound great. I built a test bed of several microphones and nobody has ever correctly identified which element is which - including the HEIL PR-20 I included as a "control" sample. I once purchased an old Shure Unidyne 55C "Elvis Style" microphone and installed a $7 replacement cartridge after super cleaning and polishing the original zinc-alloy head. Looks good - sounds good - total cost under $20 including cleaning materials. Point is ... you can easily upgrade an old mic on the cheap without sacrificing sound quality. I cannot bring myself to even consider what W2ENY sells after comparing his stuff to what appear to be comparable and possibly the same items on eBay.com and Aliexpress.com. For example, compare his $70 desk boom mic with this one on Aliexpress, and reach your own conclusion. I acknowledge he solders a Foster connector on it, but that is much more than I expect to pay for a quick solder job and a $2 plug and a bit of shrink tube. https://tinyurl.com/y2n7ussm https://w2eny.com/deskmic/ Of course, this is just my "take" (opinion) and I may be way off base. Everyone should do diligence and draw his own conclusions. [Elecraft] Need help with kat500 utility
"I have some question about the operate tab in the kat500 utility. In the "others" what should be checked off? "caps on the Ant side" "amp key interrupt" "attenuator" Not sure what these things do." If you don't have a specific reason for changing these values you should regard these as status indicators rather that user control selections. Cap side will be chosen automatically to achieve the best match. It indicates whether the capacitors of the LC tuning network are on the transceiver side of the inductors or on the antenna side of the inductors. It can be set manually when attempting to manually find, or improve, a tuning solution. Amp key interrupt indicates that the keying line has been opened and a connected amplifier cannot be keyed by the transceiver. It is set automatically in some fault conditions and when an autotune is in progress. Attenuator is a mystery that Elecraft will not respond to. It indicates that the KAT500 internal input attenuator has been activated but the removal of an internal KAT500 resistor that is part of this attenuator seems to make it impossible for the attenuator to work as designed. Re: [Elecraft] Need help with kat500 utility
Let's start with the basic facts. Rig --> amp --> KAT500 --> antenna/s (with the tuner blocking the amp key in while tuning). 1) The KAT500 was working successfully 'for years' without issue. 2) There was a sudden change in operation. This doesn't necessarily mean it was the tuner; it more likely means that something in your antenna system has changed or failed (a rope or wire, the feed etc). Start there (use an antenna analyzer to see what is different). Take a look at ALL of that system (loose connector?). Caps on either side, depends on the antenna load presented to the tuner; high or low impedance load (grossly simplified). Key interrupt should be used for an amp, so you don't put too high a stress (mostly on the amp) during the tuning process, causing damage. Likewise attenuator kicks in when you overdrive the tuner input, prior to a fault if it doesn't change. At least this is my understanding, subject to confirmation/denial. [Elecraft] D-104 Mic Element Replacement
Most D-104 mikes are not suited for use with today's radios. The original D-104 was designed to work into a load impedance of 4 meg-ohms or higher. Today's radios microphone input is about 50k ohms or so. The result is then excessive load on the D-104 element. This is the major cause of frequency response issues. The D-104 with the TG stand {amplified mike stand} uses the FET device as a buffer, thus it is providing a very high impedance for the mike element and adequate gain to drive a 50k ohm or lower microphone input. As to replacing the D-104 element, if yours has output, likely it is OK and is suffering from the issue of improper load on the element. Remember, this mike was designed to operate with tube type microphone amplifiers, having an input impedance of several meg-ohms. The D-104 on my TUG8 stand has the original Rochelle salt element and the FET amplifier in the base. It sounds great on any of my radios. My comment is that one should use the mike such that moisture or spittal from the mouth does not accumulate on the mike face and element. Also don't leave it in a position where the equipment will heat the D-104 above room temperature and surely left in the direct sun. I frequently hear hams talking about using a D-104 with a Heil element. Fact is, it no longer is a D-104, it is a Heil HC-4 or HC-5 or whatever. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 2/23/2022 1:57 PM, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net wrote: Message: 2 Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2022 17:35:58 -0500 From: Dean Adinolfi To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] D-104 Mic Element Replacement Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" W2ENY element works great. https://www.w2eny.com/ Dean, KD3ANX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] D-104 Mic Element Replacement
Thanks for the references. Some of the elements from the harmonica place are interesting, but expensive. A good source, if they are OK. Emboldened by D-104 Element Repair - Mike Harrison (smugmug.com) I tore into one and found the diaphragm glue gone and the linkage between the diaphragm and element loose on both ends. The repair is easy and preliminary indications are it's working OK. I don't know if it's a crystal or ceramic element, but it's hot, so I expect ceramic. Re: [Elecraft] K3 strange overshoot
Hi Tony, I've noticed that whenever I adjust the drive on the K3 either up or down, there is an initial power overshoot on the first dit after the adjustment. I use an Alpha 87A which can be sensitive to drive (sometimes the overshoot causes a grid over-current fault), so I've gotten into the habit of putting it in standby after a drive adjustment on the K3. Then, I send a dit, after which I put the Alpha 87A back into operate mode. I thought this was an design idiosyncrasy I had to live with. I'll have to give the re-calibration procedure you describe a try to see if that fixes the problem. Thanks, 73, Mike W4EF On 2/21/2022 12:49 PM, N2TK via Elecraft wrote: I got way behind with my personal email so not sure if there has been follow-up to this. I have a K3/KPA1500. This was very puzzling as I never drove the amp hard, at least not to my knowledge. I was concerned about using it. Thought about selling it as it was fresh back from the factory again and checked out. But not sure if there was an inherent problem with the amp so didn't want to pass this on to someone else. When it came back I left it in the box for quite a while. Used the KPA500 instead. Finally set it up for ARRLDXCW. But kept my drive at <20W. My amps are in the basement on a shelf literary right below my feet where I sit to operate. My left monitor is off about 45 degrees. This is where I have a window for the KPA1500 Remote screen window. What I noticed, even with <20W drive, when I changed any bands, the first key shot the power way up. After the first keying the power dropped down to what you would expect. Any keying after that would be fine until I changed bands. Maybe this is why the KPA1500 finals died? I was told this is caused by the K3. If you set the K3 to exactly 5 or 50W the calibration will change and cause this spike. Someone told me to do a recalibrate on the K3 (sorry I don't remember who told me to do that? This K3 had come back from Elecraft along with the KPA1500.I did that and guess what, the spike on the KPA1500 went away even when changing bands. Since I did this I make sure the K3 is never set up for either 5 or 50w. Everything worked fine all weekend, but with reduced power. I was eagle eye when changing bands and so far have not seen the problem come back. Is this K3 issue about the problem happening if you set up and transmit with the K3 at 5W or 50W for real? Is it widespread? I have to assume Elecraft isn't aware of this, if it is a real problem. I got to assume they would have sent out a notice or a possible software upgrade to fix this. Bob, no idea if this is the overshoot problem you are seeing. By the way, what drive power are folks using to get 1500W out of the KPA1500?Also, I don't believe the SWR has had any involvement with this problem. [Elecraft] D-104 Element Replacement
No actual replacement found so far, but several nice dynamic/electret conversions. Encouraged by this posting on QRZ, D-104 Element Repair - Mike Harrison (smugmug.com), I decided there was nothing to lose by looking inside. It's actually no problem at all and I found multiple problems: linkage between diaphragm and element loose at both ends, diaphragm perimeter glue completely gone, wooly stuff between screen and diaphragm completely gone. I did a very quick repair, attaching the linkage to the element with beeswax and the diaphragm to the linkage with rubber cement. Preliminary testing on the air indicates the response is very similar to that of a believed good unit, so I'm declaring conditional victory until better tests are available. SO, the moral; You may not need an element at all, if you are willing to fool around a while and repair what's wrong! Not like I had nothing to do, but it's nice to get to the bottom of something.
