GM Bob,    A good post, which hopefully no one objects to.    It does not
denegrate other xcvrs and it is on topic. The numbers tell the story.  Ah but
some bells are nice.   Must admit I use the 'DX LIST' and like it.   Thank you

this has to do with someone that posted "the FT=101D has the best receiver
performance numbers".  Well this is not exactly true.  The K3S is consistently
better than the FT-DX101D and the FLEX 6700.  As to the K4D, it is much further
down the list from the top 3 or 4.I fear many hams only look at the top line,
brand and model and say that is best.   Clearly this is not true.  The top line
is sorted by Dynamic Range Narrow spaced and that's all.    Certainly there are
factors just as important or more important data points than that.Of course
there is no way to judge whistles and bells.  I think more hams are enticed by
whistles and  bells and know little what makes for a performance radio.
Secondly, factors as quality of the product, failures out of the box, service

[Elecraft] Small keypad for KX2

2022-03-09 Thread Stefan Jansen
Hi,

I am looking for a small keypad that could be connected to the KX2 and which
which I could execute commands on the KX2 like with macros on the KX2 utility
program. Something like the K-Borad from www.qrpworks.com, but not a full-sized
keyboard, only some 5 or 10 keys.
https://www.qrpworks.com/k-board.html

Does anyone know if something like this exists or could point me to a DIY
project?

Re: [Elecraft] XLR on K2

voltage is 48V.

Phantom power ranges from about 12V to 48V, depending on the mic.
Professional mics that require phantom power are NOT compatible with the
unbalanced inputs that are used on all ham gear I'm aware of. The ONLY
way they could be used is with a dedicated phantom power supply followed
by a suitable audio transformer between the PSU and the rig.

Professional DYNAMIC mics ARE compatible with virtually all ham mic
inputs, requiring nothing more than a properly wired cable adapter. Pin
2 of the XLR goes to Mic In, Pin 3 goes to Mic Return, Pin 1 goes to the
shielding enclosure (chassis). Bias should be turned off.

Pro mics are, however, serious overkill for ham radio. "A fool and his
money . . . ." But if it's free, why not? :)

I'm speaking as a retired audio professional, ham for 66 years.

A stock K2, unfortunately, is not a great SSB rig, for several reasons.
First, the audio chain lacks enough gain to activate the limiter enough
to matter, needs low end rolloff. Second, while the RX sounds very good
on SSB at full bandwidth (where it uses the TX SSB filter), when the RX
crystal filter is re-aligned for narrower bandwidth, the response is
VERY peaky, creating so much phase distortion that it makes speech more
difficult to understand.

This is not surprising -- it started out life as a QRP CW rig, so adding
SSB was a compromise.

Re: [Elecraft] XLR on K2

2022-03-09 Thread gt-i

If you look for a "no solder" solution, you might find XLR-to-kenwood
cables. They seem to be expensive, like
https://www.ebay.com/itm/111802127327

However, it would be good to know if your mic needs extra supply voltage
("phantom") or not. If your mic is a cheap one, than it is probably no
condenser mic and doesn't need it.
Note the K2 can supply +5V on the MIC connector, while the phantom
voltage is 48V.

[Elecraft] K4 Notch AM doesn't work?

2022-03-09 Thread Tim Tucker
I just got the K4D up and running. This morning I tuned to the local AM
broadcast station I listen to, which often has an annoying tone right on
frequency (The K3S heard it, too). With the K3, I would just manually
notch it out. With the K4, I turn on manual notch, spin the notch
frequency dial, but nothing happens. From memory, the interfering tone is
around 2Hz, but I can't seem to make it work on AM. Is this a feature that
isn't quite working on AM as expected yet?

Thanks,
Tim
