Re: [Elecraft] K4 Firmware Updating

2022-04-25 Thread Rick Tavan

On the contrary, it's easy to update wirelessly. I must have been
less than clear with my original comment. Let me try again:

If you don't have wired ethernet conveniently available
near your K4, get a "Ethernet Extender" such as this:
https://www.amazon.com/Powerline-Ethernet-Adapter-Extender-TP-Link/dp/B084CZMYNM/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=ethernet%2Bextender=1650918537=8-6=1

The device connects to your WiFi network. It also has an RJ45
connector. Run an ethernet cable from the device to your K4 and
it works as if you had connected the K4 directly to your router.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Grease your DELETE Key

2022-04-25 Thread Wayne Moore K7EX
When I installed the solar package in my RV I used a Morningstar
Sure-Sine 300. It was recommended as an RF quiet inverter, and,
although I don't do a lot with my KX3 when I'm out camping, I
do some and it seems pretty quiet. It's only 300W, not 500, so
maybe it won't meet your needs but I'm happy with it.

You might contact IOTA Engineering. They don't seem to make exactly what you

want but they do make emergency lighting inverters packaged with batteries.?

Perhaps they can sell you the guts of one of these.? I know them for their
battery chargers, which are first rate and electrically quiet.

Disclaimer:? I moonlighted for the founders of this company at another small

start-up about 50 years ago.? It is a local Tucson company but I have zero

Re: [Elecraft] K4 Firmware Updating

2022-04-25 Thread Dave
The K4D default is DHCP client enabled, and as you point out almost all home
routers are configured as DHCP servers. The only time I have seen when they are
not is if someone had changed it.

Neighbor K6XX, a serious contester and the Elecraft engineer responsible
for putting both of their amps into production, advised me to use the
default settings for fan control, letting the firmware deal with thermal
issues. Bob knows that I do a LOT with WSJT modes on 6M during the
summer. He also advised me to turn off the amp when not in use, noting
that fans have the lowest MTBF of any parts in the amps, thanks in part
to the accumulation of dust.

That is only true if DHCP is enabled in the router [it almost always is
in home situations], AND the device you're connecting is configured to
negotiate with DHCP for an IP address lease.  I don't have a K4 but I
suspect there is at least one other attribute for the IP address setting
that will activate DHCP negotiation with your router.

[Elecraft] K3s-P3 remote from basement- K3/0??

2022-04-25 Thread Jerry Moore
II'd like to be able to use the key 3 / 0 to relocate my rig to the basement
and operate from my office with the least amount of heavy or large cables.
Based on looking at the manual it doesn't appear that the unit is designed
originally to be used that way however it's implied that it probably can be
with special cabling (without the other boxes).

Does anyone know if this is possible? I have no desire to connect my rig to the
internet and the distance between my rig and the k-30 would be within the
physical limits of USB which is 90 m. Primary use would be slow speed c w and
some voice. Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] K4D - KPA500 Fault Question + wish

2022-04-25 Thread Andy Durbin
"Is there data showing more dissipated heat with lower output in solid state
amplifiers? "

I have test data for my KPA500 and it's very obvious that this amplifier has
higher PA heat dissipation at half power than at full power. Not just less
efficient as a percentage of power output but the absolute dissipation is
higher.

At low power the absolute dissipation is lower than at full power but the
efficiency is still lower. The worse place to run a KPA500 is in the 200-300 W
output region. Note also that KPA500 PA dissipation is very dependent on load
matching.

I've posted this before but some of my test data can be seen here -

Re: [Elecraft] K4D - KPA500 Fault Question + wish

2022-04-25 Thread Andy Durbin
"Now, my question for everyone reading - when is it that you feel the need to
set the fan speed above 0?"

I coded my station controller to provide an option to start KPA 500 fan at
start of TX and have it run for a fixed time after TX stops. My test data
showed no significant advantage in temperature control over just letting KPA
500 decide when to run the fan.

My KPA 500 is better instrumented than most. I record KPA 500 finals
temperature, temperature at the "Z" bracket, temperature at a heat sink fin,
and fan speed, all at 1 Hz so I think I have a good data set.

I left the option in the code but do not enable it. My minimum fan speed is
zero.
