[Elecraft] K3S - High SWR on 6 Meters

2022-06-14 Thread Bob McGraw
Is the ATU in BYPASS or  AUTO mode?  A dit would cause it to resolve a
match or recall a previous match.   If your 6M antenna has an SWR of
1.5:1 or less, then the ATU should be in BYPASS mode for 6M.

With WSJT-X, is the Radio Setup menu set to Fake It or SPLIT? If SPLIT,
then is VFO B on some random or frequency distant from VFO A?   I
suggest setting the WSJT-X Setup to Fake it.

High SWR occurs immediately when using the FT8 Tune function on WSJT-X
It does not occur initially with a dummy load, however once the high SWR
state occurs, it persists when switching to a dummy load.
A CW dit will clear the high SWR state..

Re: [Elecraft] What is a reasonable turnover time to hear from Elecraft support:

2022-06-14 Thread John Paul Keon
As for the Elecraft Support Staff, I am very happy and a very
satisfied customer.

I emailed them several times and got replies within a reasonable amount of
time.

I sent my K3S in for repair and got it back in a short time.
They made the necessary repairs, and upgrades and it works better
than it did new. Evidently when I built it I did not tighten down some
parts
and did not do some other things properly.
They sent it back calibrated and factory updated.

I also received several calls from Doug and he explained what happened
to the radio. Some of the support techs also called.

Happy? Yes!
Supportive? YES!

I know they were hung up for a while with the K4D production and the issues
they had in house. After that cleared they took my RMS and got it done!

tl;dr: The world is broken and the only thing that you can do is to move
from yahoo to a provider whose addresses you see on the list without
this munging.

A few things come together:

 - Mailinglists resend messages, normally with the From: field
   unchanged.

 - As part of spamfighting, mail senders often add digital signatures
(DKIM) so that recipients can tell a message was sent by the domain
   in From:

 - Mailinglists add subject tags and footers. I view this as a bug
because it breaks signatures, and delivers a message From: someone
with content they didn't send -- but I'm odd, it's very common and
many think this is ok. (People can sort/filter on List-Id: header.)

 - Some domains publish a policy that says "if the messages fails DKIM
and it didn't come from my servers, reject it."
yahoo/aol/verizon.net (all the same thing now) is one of those
domains. This is called "DMARC reject" and fairly few places do it.

 - Therefore, messages to lists from DMARC reject places experience one of:

   * if there is no subject tag, no footer, and no From: munging: DKIM
is intact and all is ok

   * if there is modification then the redistributed message fails DKIM
 and hence DMARC

   * If there is modification and the From: line is rewritten to be from
the list, so that the original sender's domain is not looked up for
DMARC rules, it is delivered. But it is broken, because "reply"
which should send a message to the sender, sends to the list,
 risking publishing private correspondence.

 - There is Authenticated Receive Chain which might be a way out, but it
   might just be too complicated.

So solutions are:

  - move your email to a provider which does not publish a DMARC reject
policy. It's a good idea to move away from yahoo anyway, because
their inbound spam filtering is broken and unfixable, in my
experience (their customers could not get mail from me to land in
their INBOX despite trying pretty hard, and their support could
not/would not explain why).

  - configure mailinglists to 1) not add subject tags 2) not add footers
and 3) not do From: rewriting.

I recommend doing both, but both are easier said than done.

(As an addendum, the list blocks messages with OpenPGP signatures.)

For me, it depends on whether the message was also sent to me directly.
Your initial message included the "from Elecraft" notation since I received
it only through the mailing list, but your reply to me didn't include it
since you sent it to me and the mailing list.

I'm using Gmail, but if your email client works similarly, you should
generally see the notation only on messages where you haven't yet replied.

[Elecraft] help with mailing list

2022-06-14 Thread Robert Strickland via Elecraft
When I send an email to this list, the "from" field prints my name and
"via Elecraft" together in the from/correspondents column. What am I
doing to get the "via Elecraft" and what do I do to get rid of it so
that just my name appears? I am using Thunderbird as a mail client on a
W10-64 machine. Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 and Heatsink

2022-06-14 Thread Ed Cole
I added a heat sink to my KX3 a few years ago since I use it with long
"key-down" digital modes such as wsjt-x (primarily on 6m).

I obtained the heat sink from VE7FMN and it installed easily. Later
Elecraft came out with its version which I bought (but have not
installed). Being a thin metal plate didn't seem comparable in heat
conduction to the die-cast aluminum unit with cooling fins. I tried
finding VE7FMN's product and domain name is not registered so guessing
he quit making them.

My testing results: http://www.kl7uw.com/KX3.htm

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - High SWR on 6 Meters ***SOLVED***

2022-06-14 Thread N4ST - Jim
That was it!
I was running the latest firmware version, but since I had the old PA module ,
inserting the 6dB of attenuation would not let me reach full power on 6M.
My "new" refurbished PA module was of the newer variety and required the 6dB of
attenuation in order to avoid instabilities.
Putting my TenTec Eagle back in the closet. .

Thank You Elecraft support for supplying new LPA/PA modules and diagnosing my
problem.

Jim;
Make sure you are updated to the latest 5.67 Firmware.
In the notes of the K3 Utility you will find this in the Help\K3
Firmware Release Notes;
It is specific for 6m, it is -only- for the KPA3"A", and will fix any
oscillation issues (which can manifest as High-SWR);
Keith WE6R Elecraft K3/K4 Tech

K3 MCU 5.67 / DSP 2.88 / FPF 1.26, 1-22-2019
* 6 M GAIN REDUCTION (FOR USE WITH KPA3A):
In some cases the KPA3A may have more gain than necessary on 6 meters.
As a precaution, all radios using a KPA3A (instead of the older KPA3)
should be configured to insert some attenuation. See instructions below.
No hardware modifications are required.

INSTRUCTIONS: [Do this only on a K3S, or a K3 that has a KPA3A installed.]
1. Select the 6 meter band.
2. Connect a dummy load rated at 50 W (or higher) to the transceiver.
3. Set the PWR control to 50 watts.
4. Place the ATU in bypass mode.
5. Locate the CONFIG:TUN PWR menu entry. Set the value to NOR using VFO A.
6. Locate the CONFIG:TXGN HP menu entry.
7. Tap the '8' switch (NR) once to add "ATN6" to the parameter display
on VFO A.
(Tapping it a second time would return to the original
non-attenuated setting.)
8. Exit the menu.
9. Hold TUNE to do automatic power calibration on 6 meters at the 50 W
level. After a few seconds, tap XMIT to terminate the TUNE operation.

NOTE: If you have difficulty reaching full power on 6 meters after
making this change, it could be because your PA module is actually a
KPA3, not a KPA3A. In this case, re-do the above procedure, changing the
TXGN HP menu setting back to the original (i.e., without "ATN6"
showing). (Max. power output at 50 MHz is specified at 100 W +/- 1 dB,
typical. 1 dB below 100 W is approx. 90 W. See Specifications for max
output at 51 MHz and higher.)

I've seen guys trying to help asking questions for which I haven't seen
answers. I'll try ONCE to help.

1. Describe the antenna. Where is it (with respect to the shack)?
5el Cushcraft located 55 feet from the shack.
2. As others have observed, the first thing to check in any system when
something like this happens is to suspect EVERYTHING in the antenna
system, ESPECIALLY ever piece of coax and every connection. That means
getting serious to check that every connector is wrench tight, and to
"rattle" all cables and connectors while watching for any changes.
By passed Daiwa antenna switch. Swapped coax jumper cables.
3. What WAS the SWR on CW? What was it on FT8?
1.1-1.2 SWR on CW. Meter pegged +10 on FT8
4. What happens if you click on TUNE in the software you're using for FT8?
That is how I have done the FT8 testing.
5. What power did you use for each mode?
Have used 50W & 100W on CW. 8W, 10W & 50W on FT8
The FT8 SWR is fine at 8 watts, before K3S PA is engaged. No good
at 10W when the PA kicks in.
6. Are any of your coax connectors, including adapters, junk? If they
don't say Amphenol 83-1SP, or have a MIL spec number stamped on them,
there a VERY good chance that they are JUNK. When I got back on the air
in 2003, I filled my parts stash with all sorts of no-name adapters from
ham vendors. Over the next 6-8 years, they caused me all sorts of grief.
Flimsy construction, spring wire in elbow adapters, out of physical
tolerance center conductors that don't mate well to form a solid
contact. I had Tee adapters fall apart.
I may have some "junk" connectors. DX Engineering crimp/solder
PL-259s.
Have swapped jumpers. Bypassed antenna switch. No observable
difference.
FWIW, my TenTec Eagle is perfectly happy with the 6M beam, 70W FT8,
1.2 SWR.
I suspect my "new" refurbished PA module from Elecraft has some
instability.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - High SWR on 6 Meters

2022-06-14 Thread lists
I had this happen when I got my KPA-1500 a few years ago. When using my old
IC-7000 it was fine, using 100W from my K3s was good but QRO, at any level,
and it went to heck. I was advised by several folks that the matching
network on my antenna (M-Squared 6M5) was known to be problematic at high
power.

To rule everything else out I went with a straight run from the amp to the
antenna and the same thing was occurring. That's what prompted me to change
antennas. I bought a 6-el LFA from InnovAntennas two years ago and not a
hint of a worry ever since. 1400W all day on FT8 and other than the noise of
fan level 3, it's all good.

Now with all that said, I'd definitely check your balun and feedline first
and foremost.

same frequency.

Are you sure there is no breakdown in your antenna, feedline or external
antenna switch? Infinite SWR on the external meter would indicate an issue
beyond it.

Are you seeing the problem on any other band? with any other antenna?

I recently went through a "High SWR" issue with my K3 that turned out to be
a bad coaxial jumper (between rig and switch that allows me to switch rigs)
even though the jumper does not test bad with an ohm meter (no shorts, opens
or intermittents as either connector is flexed or twisted).

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - High SWR on 6 Meters

2022-06-14 Thread N4ST - Jim
High SWR occurs immediately when using the FT8 Tune function on WSJT-X
It does not occur initially with a dummy load, however once the high SWR
state occurs, it persists when switching to a dummy load.
A CW dit will clear the high SWR state..

Does it do this if you transmit a long carrier into your antenna using the
tune button? Can you transmit FT8 into a dummy load OK?

CW Key down, 100W, I get 1.2 on external SWR meter and 1 bar on K3S SWR

With FT8 I'm OK for 1 or 2 transmits and then I get infinity on external SWR
meter and full scale on K3S SWR meter, but full power out.
If I switch to a dummy load, I get zero power out (fold back?)
If I operate FT8 at 8 watts with the beam, I get 1.2 on external SWR meter
and 1 bar on K3S SWR meter and 8 watts out.
Going back to CW full power seems to perform a reset. Everything still fine
in CW, but now FT8 is OK for 1 or 2 transmits and then high SWR returns.

Any advice?
A spur/oscillation in the KPA3A?
A relay stuck/not switching?

My TenTec Eagle is carrying the load for me during these 6M openings.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - High SWR on 6 Meters

I've seen guys trying to help asking questions for which I haven't seen
answers. I'll try ONCE to help.

1. Describe the antenna. Where is it (with respect to the shack)?

3. What WAS the SWR on CW? What was it on FT8?
4. What happens if you click on TUNE in the software you're using for FT8?
5. What power did you use for each mode?

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - High SWR on 6 Meters

2022-06-14 Thread N4ST - Jim
It's a puzzler.
CW is fine. Even 100W key down CW is fine, which I don't normally run on 6M.
Can't figure out why CW is OK, but FT8 "creates" high SWR.
Problem did not exist before replacing the LPA and PA.

What is the 6m antenna, how far away is it from the xmitter? Sounds like
an issue with a balun or matching overheating with the stress of FT8?

I would hook the K3 up directly to the 6m antenna or the dummy load.
Something is certainly acting odd.

Are you sure there is no breakdown in your antenna, feedline or
external antenna switch? Infinite SWR on the external meter would
indicate an issue beyond it.

Are you seeing the problem on any other band? with any other antenna?

I recently went through a "High SWR" issue with my K3 that turned out
to be a bad coaxial jumper (between rig and switch that allows me to
switch rigs) even though the jumper does not test bad with an ohm meter
(no shorts, opens or intermittents as either connector is flexed or
twisted).
