[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2022-10-09 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Both twenty and forty meters had noise with moderate QSB.  WES
contesters were active on twenty meters so I moved down 1 kHz.  I was S3
to S5 to those who found me.  On forty meters there were few other
signals when I chose a frequency.  Similar to last week, propagation
favored closer stations.

  On 14049.5 kHz at 2200z:

NO8V - John - MI

AB9V - Mike - IN

  On 7047.5 kHz at z:

K6PJV - Dale - CA

K0DTJ - Brian - CA

WM5F - Dwight - ID

W0CZ - Ken - ND

  Until next week 73,

  Kevin.  KD5ONS

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Strange Selective Hearing in My K3

2022-10-09 Thread Eric Fitzgerald

I supposed in any lengthy marriage a selective ear or a biological
mute button, so to speak, becomes inevitable ...or so it would
appear with my aging K3, purchased in 2009.

Here are the rather perplexing symptoms:

After the K3 has been on a while all signals and noise disappear.
The radios shows consistent s1 or 2 white noise. This is true on all
bands, all modes and with the preamp, agc, noiseblanker, etc on or
off. After turning the radio off for an hour or more, all signals
return as normal - only to disappear again after an indeterminate
period of time. I'm guessing that there is some failure that is
affected by the component in question heating up.  I use this radio
in receive almost 24/7 monitoring the bands. Perhaps she is just
tired of listening for me? ;-) Any ideas what this might be?  Stupid
operator error is never out of the question around here.  I thought
I would ask in here before bugging Elecraft service in case I'm
   missing something easy.

   TIA

   Eric KG6MZS

   www.kg6mzs.com

I should add that when I transmit a tone from WJST-X, say, the red light comes
on the K3, one bar lights up on the K3's RF meter but no power or SWR is
registered on my external meter.

So that would seem to eliminate anything disconnected from the rear panel connector via
an intermittent connection. If that were the case, I would expect to see a "High
SWR" reading before the power folded back.

Phase noise, both in the transmitted signal and that added to it the RX,
is mostly what makes a mess of two stations on the same band. Spurs,
generated within frequency-determining digital circuitry, are also
in-band defects.

Re: [Elecraft] Any KX2 or KX3 owners have experience with the IC-7300

2022-10-09 Thread Morgan Bailey
Last FD we ran 4 FTDX10s. No interstation interference with them being 8
feet from each other in a straight line. All antennas were within 100 feet
of each other. 2 cw stations and 2 phone stations had no problems. We did
not run CW and Phone on the same band at the same time, but had no problems
with phase noise hash. I ran 30 wpm CW and so did my son. We had no
problems. As for a great RX, there is nothing better out there in the price
range. Relays, yes. I do not care for QSK because I do not like to listen
to the noise all the time. Each of us used headphones for copy or boom mic
headsets. If you want something smaller and more compact, you might try the
FT710. It has almost the same RX as does the FTDX10 but in a smaller
package. I have not tried it. My SO2R/multi2 set up is with 2 FTDX101
radios. Again we have no problems. Because I find QSK worthless, relays do
not bother me being SO2R. Wearing a set of cans, What relays?

It has a relay at least for TX/RX switching. It's nothing like as
horrible as the old IC-706MK II but you'll want to be wearing enclosed
headphones.

It also does rather a lot via touch-screen, which can be a bit of a
nuisance at times.

Re: [Elecraft] communications on KX2 Mic's (MH3)

2022-10-09 Thread David Wilcox via Elecraft
It might be very helpful for dissatisfied customers to list the method they
used to communicate with Elecraft and the website info or whatever (phone
number? Elecraft does answer their phones) they used to contact Elecraft.
There are those here that are satisfied with Elecrafts response and might
educate the rest how to get through to Elecraft. I suspect many are not
following the listed methods or their response is lost in their spam file. Not
everyone knows the correct ways to look for a response. Email has its ins and
outs and sometimes it just doesn’t make sense (ask my wife… who loses emails
regularly or can’t find responses).

Dave K8WPE since 1960 and all my Elecraft radios have worked since I bought
them. I must be lucky?

Re: [Elecraft] Any KX2 or KX3 owners have experience with the IC-7300

2022-10-09 Thread Julia Tuttle
I've got a KX3 and an IC-7300.

The 7300 uses a moderately clacky relay for T/R switching but something
silent (to my ears) for sending CW while the relay is in the T position.

If you expect the basically instant and completely silent QSK of the KX3,
you'll be disappointed.

If you don't mind turning the QSK delay up a bit, it might not bug you, but
you might not want to for contesting.

Beyond the clattery QSK, I found the interface of the 7300 much less
efficient. Elecraft has quite expertly packed many commonly-used controls
onto those three knobs below the screen, and Icom has neither the UX
expertise nor the actual physical knobs to match that convenience.

Basically, I begrudgingly use the 7300 when I need the output power (I
don't own a KXPA100... yet), but far prefer basically everything about the
KX3 + PX3.

Re: [Elecraft] Any KX2 or KX3 owners have experience with the IC-7300

2022-10-09 Thread Jim Brown
One of the most important characteristics of a radio for FD is its
ability to play well with others. I have heard that the IC7300 does not.
The low cost Kenwood radios have, in general, been second best to the K3
and KX3 in that regard. Deficiencies of the Icom and Yaesu rigs are lots
of clicks and phase noise, and many of the Yaesu rigs have terrible
splatter on SSB.

Since the introduction of the K4, there have been a lot of K3s in good
shape selling for bargain prices. I recently bought an early vintage K3
with second RX, 5 8-pole filters, a P3/SVGA, and power meter for $2K
from a member of our contest club to have as a spare. Two weeks ago, the
P3/SVGA replaced the one in my primary station whose SVGA board had
failed. The K3 replaced a K3 that had gotten its RX fried during a CQP
county expedition. Both worked perfectly. I haven't need the power meter
yet.

The K3 is, by far, the best FD/expedition rig I've ever seen/used. Our
county expedition and FD team typically does three of these events a
year, and the newest of them is ten years old. Other than a couple of
SVGA boards, the only failures have been due to our failure to rig
antennas well enough to keep the RF of one rig out of the other's RX.
And we run KPA500s on the two stations in W6GJB's county expedition
trailer.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft support and communication

2022-10-09 Thread Dan Presley
Welcome to the list John and don’t be put off by a few complaints. I’ve been a
customer since 1999 when I got my K2. I’ve never had any communication issues
with Elecraft-every time I contact them about parts or technical issues they
respond very promptly which is incredibly impressive given that it’s a very
small company. I wonder if some of the problems may be due to folks just
expecting Elecraft to contact them rather than calling or emailing to get
updates. It’s a small enterprise and they’re scrambling to keep up.
