Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 TX problem on 20m

2024-03-08 Thread Michael Carter via Elecraft
Hi Paul,

I'd say that our respective KPA3A TX Gain calibration
values are similar enough. Having not had the
bipolar PA model KPA3, I don't have a point of
reference for whether your TX gain parameter
values are reasonable or not.

I would contact Elecraft Support and copy
Keith, WE6R with
a request for their troubleshooting document
dealing with 'low TX output power.' I don't
have a copy and only learned of its existence
by Keith mentioning it in another post. I don't
think it's posted on the Elecraft public pages.

[Elecraft] Configure to send CW in SSB mode?

2024-03-08 Thread Mike Dodd

I just received a used K3 as a backup rig (had a K3s before the K4).

The manual says, and I know 5his to be true, "You can transmit in CW
when SSB mode is selected by just hitting the key or paddle."

But when I hit my key in LSB mode, no CW is transmitted. Is there a
CONFIG or MENU item I need to set to enable this?

The K3 Utility says this K3 is up-to-date on all firmware releases.

Thanks for any/all pointers.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 TX problem on 20m

2024-03-08 Thread dyno lab
Hi Mike,

Thanks for the gain information.
I am going to look at the the gain numbers and see if there is any correlation
with the wildly different input impedances to the output lowpass filters.

For reference, I found the input Z to the filters to be as follows:
160: 63.8 +J1.6
80: 35.7 +J5.1
40: 42.0 +J5.8
20: 32.0 -J2.1
17: 51.0 +J3.1
15: 49.6 -J0.3
10: 60.4 -J2.9
6: 51.0 +J0.14

Looking at the component values of the output filters, it appears that the
above impedances were by design. Which makes me wonder if it was an attempt to
compensate for the poor saturation characteristics of the MOSFETs and leakage
inductance of the output transformer of the MOSFET amplifier (KPA3A)?

I am also finding in some cases that the K3s LPA (KLPA3A) has some problems of
its own and does not like to play nicely with the input to the LDMOS K3s
Retrofit Amplifier on 160 meters.
I would however like to avoid redesigning LPA by compensating for its
shortcomings in the LDMOS amplifier.

Thanks again for your feedback.

Hal

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Manual building method

2024-03-08 Thread Clark Macaulay WU4B
There is no engineering reason for soldering as you go a la Heathkit vs.
installing groups of components and then soldering them. I have had both
problems mentioned by Skip in my years of building kits: overlooked solder
joints and components in the wrong holes. In my experience, looking for a
missed solder joint is preferable to removing a mis-installed component
that might damage the traces and/or the component.

When I built my K2 #6011 about 12 years ago, I followed the instructions in
the manual believing the beta testers of the kit were far more experienced
than me in the building process that would produce the best outcome. I can
recall building other kits where I had soldered-on-way all of one kind of
component only to find the last remaining part was not what it should have
been. Arghhh!

In the final analysis, it’s probably a personal preference of the builder
as to which process to use. I have one of the components testers mentioned
that is invaluable in determining component values with my aging 81 year
old eyes. Color codes on resistors made today are hard enough, and tiny
black letters on NP0 capacitors that are blue are impossible for me to
discern.

Now…enough talking and time for me to tackle one of my YUK (Yet Unbuilt
Kits). Let the Melt Solder begin.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Fault 6 and loss of power control

2024-03-08 Thread Mike Cizek W0VTT
Hello Pete,

This happens to my K3S regularly. After it spent WAY too much time back at the
mother ship three years ago without them being able to reproduce the fault (RSA
#10260, in case Keith is reading this), I was finally able to narrow down the
cause.

I can reproduce the fault by going from FL2 to FL3, FL3 to FL4 or by exiting
the QRQ mode. This makes me think it may be a firmware problem. I'm running
v5.67, the most recent version. I can't figure out how to force a load of an
earlier version to see if that cures the problem.

Has anyone else experienced this? I can't be the only one.

Today I started seeing this in my K3 driving a KPA-1500. It only needs around
30-34 watts to drive it to full power on CW, but when I set the K3's power to
that, and everything looks fine, occasionally the K3 displays Fault 6 on its
panel and causes the KPA-1500 to fault, displaying 65 watts input on the amp's
display and well over 1500 watts on the power bargraph.

I can't find any reference to Fault 6 in the manual for the K3 - can anyone
clue me in? Is something dying in the K3?

[Elecraft] [K1] was Happy 15th Birthday to my K2!

2024-03-08 Thread eric norris via Elecraft
Petr,
I agree, the K1 is also a great lttle rig!  I built mine after very invasive
shoulder surgery many years ago.  Since I was in quite a bit of pain, on
Vicodin around the clock--and forbidden from lifting heavy weights--I thought
it would be a fun experiment to see if I could  build a fully-optioned K1 while
my faculties were so dimmed.  I cheated a little, using toroids wound by
TheToroidGuy.
Success!  And it still works FB.
After seeing Heathkit HW-8s go for $1K+ on Ebay in the past, it is no surprise
that K1s, KX1s, and eventually K2s can fetch big money.  They're all fine
performing radios to this day (not the HW-8).

Big congrats and I wish you many another DX and enjoyable QSOs with your K2.
My K2 #4800 is working like champ, and it is hard to beat. Just my K1 can
outperform K2 regarding the noise figure, hi.
I hope that K2 will be still available and I really miss the K1 in the offer.
The popularity of K1 is evidenced by the huge price it still commands if a
piece appears at auction or for sale somewhere.
