  Frank,
If you think you want 500 watts out, you will have to install the KPA3
100 watts) anyway. The K3/10 will not be able to drive the KPA500 to
ull output - you may be able to get somewhere betwen 200 and 300 watts
ut of it.

Shortly after I got my K3 I started on a project to write the K3

be changed. (extended vfo)

Bill K3UJ

Maybe some one can help. I am building K-2 # 5423 with the rework
eliminators.
I got the unmdules and missing parts but the instructions were not good for
installing missing parts. I figured it all out except the 60 meter module.
I installed D-19 and 20 before testing and alignment part II. All was
fine until VCO control voltage setting. The low and high freq voltages at
R-30 were well within range on all bands except 40 meters where it was
7.000--5.51v 7.300--7.91v and sensitivity seemed low on 40. Then I
discovered on the K-2 schematic DO NOT install D 19, 20 with out changing
C-71 from 82pf to 120pf.
I replaced C-71 with the 120pf that came with the rework parts and now 40
is deaf and the VCO voltage is7.93 volts at 7.000 and hardly changes up to
7.300.

Are there other changes that need to be made? Maybe somebody reading
this has had this problem.

tnx Phil

So...??

Do you have some sound files that show what kind of difference that makes,
and under what conditions?

So many people base decisions on specs, with no idea what kind of
difference those specifications mean in real world performance. Hearing is
believing.
I for one would like to hear more evidence that goes beyond the numbers,
such as is being presented for the NorCal 2030.

Hopefully there are those on this -superlist- who are equipped and inclined
to produce and share that kind of evidence as it pertains to the various
specs that are bandied about. I myself have barely a clue...

The MFJ-461 Morse Code Reader (~$80) is a very nice tool to improve the
quality of one's CW operations. It will improve your fist if you monitor your
own sending. Just tune the reader to your rigs sidetone, and a decent fist
will read out on the display. Fun to play with.

How would one calculate the amplifier gain (in dB) required to go from one

[Elecraft] Fillet or not?

2005-03-30 Thread Able2fly

There are those who advocate no fillet when soldering plated thru holes. Is
an obvious fillet in that instance a sign of too much solder?

K3UJ

===

Never trim precut to length leads such as ICs and relays, and resistor
packs, or crystals.

These have just enough extension thru the normal fillet of solder to not be
a problem

That can't be right. Drawing it (roughly) on paper shows it to be around 13

What features does Ultimatic Keying have? And what keyers offer it?

This from an OHR ad:

Ultimatic is a pre-iambic keying mode in which the result of a squeeze is
that the keyer will switch to the last lever pressed rather than alternating
dits and dahs.

Hi Bob,

That's a good idea IMHO. A full sized K2 for those who don't need small
size. Give more importance to having room for fingers to twist knobs
without hitting the ones close by and etc. From what I'm seeing the
performance is up there with many of the major brands so there just might
be a market for such a K2 maybe the K2A1 Desktop rig. :-)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

OK, Back in my hole.

Yes! Yes! A full sized K2 with more knobs and a bigger display. A more
flexible AGC and an even better s/n (no antenna, no noise ;-) would be icing on

the cake. We do need an Orion killer after all...

Does anyone know of a good way to remove frozen RF from an antenna? It
is now so thick on my wire that the new RF can no longer get through.
Typically the antenna stays pretty clear where there is a current max,
but I've been changing qrg so much, only the feed point looks okay,
even running the K2/100 qro. I envy you chaps down south and on the

RE: [Elecraft] K2#4155 speaker/audio

Let me clarify. The speaker frame can get distorted in shipping while not
installed in the radio. I've never had a repeat problem after correcting
the initial distortion.

To check for a twisted speaker, carefully move the cone in and out by hand.
Just push straight down on it gently, and then let go. The cone should move
perceptibly, but the voice coil should not rub.

[Elecraft] Like MFJ's 931 Artificial Ground ?

Is there a kit version of the artificial ground available? Even a

their own, or knows of a kit, I'd like to hear about it.

I read somewhere that Field Day, 1994 marked the prototype's debut. So happy

[Elecraft] Field Day dipole/ no radial vertical

2004-06-24 Thread Able2fly
I've been having considerable success with the resonant feedline dipole
(RFD) antenna as was described in QST a few years back and also in the '04
ARRL
Handbook. Its basically a 1/4 wavelength of antenna wire followed by your coax
feeder into the shack. Where they connect, the coax shield is left floating.
Some of the feedline is wound into a choke at the 1/2 W/L point or
thereabouts, decoupling and forming the dipole. (Position the choke for lowest
swr.)
With the far end pulled up high, they are good for long haul DX. I have one
cut for 40m and it works well with low swr on 30m, 17m, 15m. and 10m. Another
one for 20m rounds out the little farm. Mine aren't exactly vertical (kind of
exponentially curved) and seem to be a bit directional.

YMMV of course.
