[Elecraft] K4 and Delivery Delays

2022-03-29 Thread Bill Cotter
I thought long and hard about a K4, but couldn't stand the idea of
a two year wait for whatever reasons given. If design decisions and
supply chain choices cause you to lose customers, it says that
Elecraft needs to have a long moment to get their house in order.
Or, they will fall into line with TenTec, Collins and many other
American companies that have folded tent.

We all went through the pandemic, and worked around it. So, I
ordered a Flex 6600M and it was delivered in 8-days. No two year
wait. They have something figured out. I was also assured the PGXL
1500W amplifier ships in the same time frame.

Go figure.

Bill N4LG

You may have missed the two-year long pandemic that, among other
things, has sickened multiple Elecraft employees, caused many to
work from home, and disrupted supply chains, to the extent that
nearly all the major carmakers can't get chips to put cars on
dealers lots. Elecraft is a small company, and they're swimming in
the same ocean as the rest of us. They're 20 miles down the road
from me, and I know several of their employees, as well as the two
owners.

[Elecraft] Convert a KXUSBa cable to KUSB

2020-07-17 Thread Bill Cotter
Somehow in the entropy of the universe and my cluttered shack/shop,
I have managed to lose my KUSB cable for my K3. I found the earlier
(silver) cable, but it doesn't have the FTDI chip and won't work
with Win-10. In the process of searching for the KUSB I have
managed to unearth two KXUSBa cables for my KX3.

Since I don't need two KXUSB cables, I am contemplating cutting off
the mini phone plug and wiring up a DB-15. Has anyone done this?
And, anyone see a downside?

Thanks es 73 Bill N4LG

[Elecraft] K3 Missing CONFIG:WMTR after update to MCU5.38

2016-02-07 Thread Bill Cotter

Hi,

I just updated my K3 (sn#3082) to the (MCU 5.38, FPF 1.25, DSP1
2.86) and performed the required TX Gain Calibration. The 5W
calibration matched the Bird wattmeter on each band, but the 50W
was over 50W on each band.

I wanted to calibrate the K3 wattmeter so I could repeat the
process, however, when holding the CONFIG button, then seeking
WMTR, it never appears. I see VFO OFS then XV1 ON, and no WMTR in
between.

Suggestions??

Thanks - Bill N4LG

Re: [Elecraft] Firmware upgrades using Ubuntu 12.04

2012-07-10 Thread Bill Cotter
Don,

You have expressed what the marketplace confirms - people who want
more (ie: clear documentation) in an OS will pay more to get it. MS
Windows and products deliver the goods in that department, Apple
even more so in an odd way.

Linux will never be mainstream until it reaches outside its
community and serves the popular marketplace. Since there is
limited commercialization to cultivate the product, it's unlikely
that it will happen. Novell RedHat tried, and didn't get very far.

Suffice it to say that I have been extremely disappointing in all
Linux
distributions because of the lack of any organized support fort the
users - the attitude seems to be if you don't already understand the
nuances of Linux, we will shame your questions and be very
unhelpful.
Check out the various forums and FAQ lists to verify this attitude.

I have tried Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and Debian in the recent past,
and have
found that unless you wish to spend a loot of time in geekdom
study,
the terms are cryptic and not logical acronyms, and the user
groups are
useless unless one is already fluent in their brand of geek-speak.
Yes, I am computer fluent in Windows and peer-to-peer networking - I
have worked with PCs since the Apple II days and the IBM PC DOS
systems
are no stranger to me, but the Linux groups are just not helpful
at all
to those who do not understand their peculiar cryptic language.

In other words, there are no clear and concise instructions for
Linux.
The Man pages are supposedly the answer, but they offer geek-speak
explanations for those who are not initiated and expert into the
Linux
brand of geekdom.

I know, there are many who will disagree, but you will have to
point me
to a (non-on-line) manual that I can use as a reference book and is
similar to those like Mastering Windows XP Professional, Linux
in any
distro is just not going to make the grade.

For those who simply want to do email and surf the web, Ubuntu is
great,
as is Linux Mint - it has all the tools those users need, but for
those
who want to do such things as network a Linux workstation into a
Windows
peer to peer network, there is just not enough explicit information
about how to set it up and make it work. Windows peer-to-peer is
native,
but with Linux, it is a complex add-on that I have not been able to
master after several attempts with Samba configuration.

I once thought Linux would be my road to salvation without buying
Windows7 for 7 computers on my home network, but it just does not
work
consistently, so I guess I will have to spend the upgrade fees for
Win7.

So until Linux gives up its superior I am geek and I want it to stay
that way attitude, it will never fly properly. Ubuntu and Mint have
come a long way in making installation easier, but there is a long
way
to go in usability.

Linux will also have to give up using cute names for
applications to
make sense to users - for instance, Photoshop has a relevant name for
photo editing, but GIMP might mean something like geeky image
manipulating program to Linux fans, but it has no obvioous
meaning to
the average user.

Until Linux gets real instead of continuing to be geeky, it will
never fly - meaningful names are important - at least that is my
opinion
- I equate abstract naming to geeky, and by saying geeky it means
exclusionary, and not to be understood by the general user. And
that is
what is wrong with Linux.

[Elecraft] K1 Noise Blanker

2012-02-24 Thread Bill Cotter
Phil,

There are electric fences on the farms that surround my QTH. The K1
noise blanker is a God-send for killing the steady pop-pop-pop
day-in, day-out. For the trivial price Elecraft asks, it was a
bargain for me.

Question: I am not sure about the noise blanker option on the
K1. I never use the NB on any other rig except for the Icom 706
in my truck and there it does a good job. I will not be using the
K1 in the truck (or any vehicle) and I do not have a lot of spiky
noise around here.

So, is there any other reason why the NB on the K1 would be useful?

[Elecraft] K3, TenTec Titan-III and QSK

2012-02-12 Thread Bill Cotter
CW ops:

Has any one coupled their K3 to a TenTec Titan III (or,
Hercules-II, Titan-II) for QSK using the TX-out and TX-enable
keying loop?

If so, did you use any of the K3 configuration settings to get the
QSK timing correct?

I prefer keying the K3 and letting it control the amp, rather than
keying the amp and letting the amp key the K3.

Your advice appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 Repair - suggestions

Wayne Eric,

Study TenTec. A model of outstanding customer service. Excellent
communications, generous documentation on repairs, fast turn
around, board exchange, fair prices. And, good radios. Basically,
their reputation.

Another thought: Elecraft Repair Certification for those who are
enterprising enough to offer service to others. Elecraft could
manage the process and provide the pipeline needed to supply parts,
data, etc.
