[Elecraft] KPA1500 with a Yaesu FTdx101D

2021-04-01 Thread Carl Yaffey
I’m trying to get the KPA1500 utility to work with my Windows 10 PC and my
Yaesu FTdx101D.
I have downloaded the FTDI driver, run setup, and received a message saying the
driver is on my PC.
But when I run the utility it only sees COM3 and COM4, ports provided by a
Yaesu driver for WSJT-X and fldigi.
Obviously it cannot connect to these ports. I expected to see a port from the
FTDI driver install.
Any help would be appreciated.

My two cents: FT8 is a bit more than using a computer to make contacts. Believe

I have developed a loud hum with the KPA1500 on 17m and 15m. A slight hum on

It’s power dependent. Loud at full power, hum reduces as power is lowered. Not

[Elecraft] KPA3 in K3S mostly not working

2020-02-03 Thread Carl Yaffey
When I get my K4 (hopefully May . . .), I currently plan to send in my K3S for
repair. I have already talked with support.
The symptoms are:
1) In transmit mode, no power when raising the power above 11 watts. This
happens about 90% of the time. So the 100w amp is not totally gone.
2) In receive mode, sound drops considerably when raising the power above 11
watts. This is, of course, coincident with the 100w amp failing.
I haven’t found anything that causes the amp to come and go. Seems random. In
can be OK while sending and the suddenly fail.
Also, the transmit calibration fails.

Anyone have this problem? Is there a “fix” without sending in the rig?

I have had this happen intermittently when using the KPA1500 with my K3S. I’m
pretty sure it’s an RF feedback issue with the PC + WSJT-X. Never happens when
NOT on FT8.

[Elecraft] power varying - KPA1500

2018-04-01 Thread Carl Yaffey
When running the KPA1500 at full power, sometimes the power will fluctuate.
EXAMPLE: I was checking in to the Elecraft SSB net a little while ago. While
transmitting, the power dropped to around 400W. This has happened on 20M CW as
well. I wonder if the K3S output is dropping. (??).
If I run at 500W or so, no problem.

ordered. I ordered my amp on the first day possible in August - as did so many

[Elecraft] KPA problem on 6M

2016-12-09 Thread Carl Yaffey
Jack, I finally have some good data on my problem whereby I can’t get full
output from the KPA500 on 6M.
As you might remember, as I raise the drive and get beyond about 200 watts out,
I get a HI SWR fault.
I’m sure now that it’s a K3S problem. Someone on the Elecraft list suggested
that the K3S might be generating a spurious frequency that would confuse the
KPA. To test this, I brought over an ICOM IC-706MKIIG and hooked it to the KPA.
No problem at all getting full power out!
Additionally, the KAT500 tunes the beam to 1:1 with the ICOM driving the KPA.
With the K3S connected, the KAT500 tunes to about 1:8:1.
The KAT500 should not operate any differently with different driving rigs.
I’ve tried different jumpers between the K3S and the KPA with no difference.

Wow. That was a great job of problem solving. In my case, I get the KPA fault

[Elecraft] Strange KPA500 problem on 6M

2016-12-03 Thread Carl Yaffey
Bottom line: I can’t get more than 200 watts out of my new KPA500 on 6M. It
faults (HI SWR FAULT) when I try to increase the drive in order to get more
output.
But I get full power on 6 with a dummy load.

Bad antenna? Don’t think so. Here’s my setup:
3 element M2 6M beam fed with high cost, low loss coax. Very low SWR and works
great until I try to get more than 200 watts out of the amp.
I also have an R8 vertical and an HF dipole, both of which tune up on 6 with my
new KAT500.
When running the amp at 200 watts, the swr indicator shows low swr with the
KAT500 and any of the 3 antennas. As soon as I increase the drive with any of
the 3 antennas, I get the fault.
When running the amp without the KAT and the beam hooked directly in, same
fault when increasing drive.

The beam looks good in an MFJ antenna analyzer as does the R8.

So, I think the amp must be extremely sensitive to anything other than a pure
1:1 load as provided by the dummy load.
Your thoughts?
Carl, K8NU

[Elecraft] One problem solved. A new one appears.

2016-11-24 Thread Carl Yaffey
I recently posted:

> KPA500 utility: connects at 38400 no problem but no info shows in the operate
> tab. firmware N/A. I try to load firmware and it fails. I tried to force a

I solved this by plugging in the cables one at a time. All utilities working
fine now.

New problem:

On 6 meters, with the input power to the KPA500 around 7 watts, I get 200 watts
out. But as I increase the input power, the SWR increases and a “hi swr” fault
occurs. This happens with 3 different antennas: a 3 el beam, an R8 vertical,
and a dipole. All are tuned to low swr via my KAT500.
I have tried connected the beam directly to the KPA with the same result.
This only happens on 6 meters. It used to work fine when I had a K3. I now have
a K3S. Is there some setting in either the K3S or the KPA that I should change?

[Elecraft] KAT500 and KPA500 utility program ptoblems

2016-11-24 Thread Carl Yaffey
My current setup is K3S, P3, KPA500, KAT500
I recently replaced my K3 with the K3S. I was able to run all the utilities
with no problem when I had the K3.
Now, the K3S and P3 utilities are fine. But not so withe the KAT and KPA ones.
Both take several minutes to come up and run.

KAT500 utility: can’t connect (KAT500 not responding)

KPA500 utility: connects at 38400 no problem but no info shows in the operate
tab. firmware N/A. I try to load firmware and it fails. I tried to force a load
(per the manual) with no luck.

More info:
The K3 is set to USB.
The computer is an Apple mac mini with the latest OS.
I’ve refreshed the ports before trying to connect.
I’ve tried rebooting, unplugging and replugging the USB cables.
I’ve checked all the cable connections.

Note that all units are operating OK except:
On 6 meters, the KPA faults when trying to run more than 200 watts.
It used to work fine when I had a K3 driving it.

Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] KX1 for sale

2015-06-01 Thread Carl Yaffey
I really thought all items from K8IDN’s estate had been sold. But we found a
KX1.

It’s in a Pelican case (model 1200) with the plug-in paddle, an external
paddle, ear buds, internal battery, a speaker, and an external battery. It
covers 40, 30, and 20 meters and has the internal ATU. New price for all but
the external paddle, battery and speaker would be around $630. I’m asking $500.
