[Elecraft] OT: Elecraft could offer small built transceivers in addition to its kits
Small QRP transceivers like the LNR FX-2 are popping up. If a quality product could be bought, built KX1 and K1s and even K2s would compete on performance and value. Buy expensive and cry only once is a Chinese saying. Why mess with inferior products and encounter QC issues (the few reviews I found and read on the LNR FX-2 often reported similar quality control issues). With Chinese made motorcycles, you should read the tales of woe by some owners. Whole carbs getting swapped and then more than once is just one of the attempted cures... Maybe someone should make a good video and post it on Youtube, comparing the KX1 with some H1-B1 (?) or whatever kits. As a terrible OP, I had a sked with Steven KW4H then, now AI7AZ from DL. He was in a park with his KX1. It was tough going, but we had a QSO. And the antenna was something for quick /p operation, not some stacked yagi. I'm looking for another rig for /p operation and confess being tempted by the variety out there. But now I realize that true value means more than just a low sticker price! Hope that Elecraft will offer built small rigs as well. 73 de Chris KF6VCI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 purchase? By all means - drive this rig while you learn for the ticket!
Hello Sam, life is too short and I heard 40 m has been good recently. The K3 is illegal in Thailand; only the K2 is type approved. A borrowed Ft-757 DX plus some wire to the balcony does not even bring up the BBC on 6.195 sending from Singapore! To operate, I need to go to HS0AC, the club station. There they have many antennas and transceivers. K3s would make all the difference for the October WW contest and a multi op set up... If money is tight, get the low power version. A friend aligned the SWL White Mountain SSB kit for me and worked France and Greece with a few W from DL on a vertical. That was 2002. You will have fun with a K3 and there is nothing like using a high end transceiver! Regarding CW, practice it several times a day, when you can. And get on the air! I'll do that later today. My first QSO after years was posted on the DX cluster and went badly. The next one will get better. A K3 would surely motivate you to master CW! Lots of understanding QSO partners out there - check it out! I've a tendency of getting confused about what I really want and need. so I end up buying transceivers like a TS-430 (yesterday). Much better to focus on quality, not quantity. Get the best! ** I would buy the K3 with low power but the ATU and a 400 Hz filter for CW. Ask yourself, would a beginner pass up the chance to practice driving a Porsche 911 just because he has yet to take the test? [Elecraft] Hoping for an Elecraft SALE event
Time will tell how prices will change. But Elecraft has a unique position in the market... While Kenwood lowered their price for the TS-480 SAT for example over time globally. But then, the K2 and now the K3 gets perpetually improved and the line gets expanded. Why not add hundreds of K3 orders before the TS-590 hits the street? Quick, name the nearest 3 competitors to the K3! Is it a monster transceiver needing to be drop shipped? Is it a SDR requiring a powerful computer which has a hungry power supply, thus the opposite of going green? Whatever it is, it is more expensive AFAIK! How about a Labor Day Special? Spend $ 1.000 and get 5% off. Buy a K3 and add ons for $ 1,000 or more and get 10% off? Lots of people have wish lists with items like a 2nd receiver or a P3 on them. Such an incentive would make many rush to place their orders. 73, Chris KF6VCI __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] OT: following Amazon's lead regarding FOREX fees on international orders by cc
Hello Guys a fair share of K3s and other kits are sold overseas. The buyers' credit cards are denominated in some other currency like GBP, AUD or EUR. Henceforth, their bank often charges up to 2% for the currency conversion. On a $ 2,500 order that's $ 50! If Elecraft could get their cc processing company or bank to quote sale prices in the leading currencies by customers' transaction volume, folks would save thousands. Amazon is doing it... When their computer noticed me entering a UK cc, they offered to pay in GBP. [Elecraft] Sad News - the danger might be closer to home
Hi, ham spirit is alive and well in a not so good world. Take Elecraft builders and others here who always help others. Some elaborate scheme to get a module worth $ 79.90? Mmh. But let me tell you how I was suckered out of the whole shack and had a K2 stolen by the same guy. The individual came by and took a K2 which was kept in a closet. Fool I am, I had shown it to him in the past. Then he agreed to buy the whole shack, an old TS-520, lots of QRP kits built and unbuild, including some rare white Mountain SSB and a brand new Yaesu etc. etc. I was selling a house and had to get rid of it all. And rather than selling it to 10 different people, I was okay with him making a killing (he said he would sell the gear in his native Romania). He also liked the furniture so I drove a truck to his QTH full of massive wood Schiller design furniture plus the radios. No contract, no witnesses = no payment. And the guy keeps doing that: Ernst DH1HE lost an oldie Kenwood transceiver. And there are more victims out there. But Uwe Eremie changed his callsign. Has a missing finger, countless crater like scars in his face and lives in 73525 Schwaebisch Gmuend. With the economy as it is, I fear others might make similar unpleasant experiences. Low value items like a used Bencher key needs to be paid by MO or a cashier's check etc. Many absolutely refuse to sell to overseas buyers. But there might be danger closer to home. So when you sell expensive gear, treat it as a business transaction and do your due dilligence. Make a contract, photocopy ID, collect the payment in full even if it is someone in town you have known for years. 73 de Chris __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] human behaviour
In a joke, a guy complains about bad breath while brown-nosing the other one. Whenever folks get together, be it in a church or a soccer club, they will act in a certain way. Some will put down others to promote themselves. That's normal in our pluralistic society. There is constructive criticism which can be very good and destructive criticism. The latter has been popping up here. Some will find fault with every product out there, others get fixated and obsessed... All manufacturers reserve the right to alter their products. The K2's evolution speaks for itself and if I ever had any problem with my (not yet delivered) K3 I know one thing and this is incredibly good: I will get help from kind and knowledgeable folks on this reflector! If there is a missing part or any defect, Elecraft will resolve it asap. Let's all hope that those who have been attacked will shrug it off and continue to give their best, even if there is Schadenfreude and booing - just ask any pro soccer player! And even Believers might be too much: I'll bet the Pope would take up cursing loudly when he had to deal with some believers. Wives know this: some days, their husbands come home in a foul mood. Bitter, rude and whingeing. Every little thing will be a welcome excuse to project their frustration. I ordered a K2 and a K3 and fancy other Elecraft kits, too hi. But the K2 is on back order for a few more days, so the question about the ATUs arose. Would you recommend each rig to have its own ATU? A fairly resonant antenna won't need tuning, right? Would the T-1 handle end fed wires okay? I just came across some zig-zag design which is supposed to be superior to normal verticals. And my QTH is an old farm with a wood attic so I could string some zig-zag wire under the roof... hi Here is the link, sorry it's not in English: http://www.antenna-engineering.de/Kap.39_Zig_Zag_Vertikal_fuer_KW..html Thank you! 73, Chris Kf6vci / Hs0zfe ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Online Orders: both international USPS options were not valid

[Elecraft] CE Stickers in DL / comparison of K1 and KX1
I worked for a small manufacturer of electrical goods and know we put CE stickers on goods which were made without even a Master electrician being on the pay roll. That was unearthed and nothing happened! So here was a manufacturer who mass-produced goods and the CE stickers were just - stickers). Get used to civil disobediance. I know a ham in Thailand facing 10 years in jail for having an Icom 706 MK II G in his car. Bringing a KX1 in might get me 5 years... They would have shut down Bill Gates' business as it was in a garage. So get your K3s, enjoy them and stop worrying. Years ago, I read a comparison of the K1 and the KX1. Both rigs have different strengths, of course. But do I remember it correctly, the RX performance was almost on par, the ATU of the K1 was clearly better. And the KX1 let one even hear world band radio with the 30 m module. Q: would you order the paddle? Or to put it differently, is it good? ** I recall reading a post from Wayne N6KR that the paddle is an essential part of the KX1's philosophy. But I would think I'll be operating in the shack like 85% of time and I have a Bengali and Schurr Profi 2 paddle. Bottom line: size apart, would you order the K1 or the KX1? Would the KX1 be a good choice in the shack, too? [Elecraft] recommendation of a low cost iambic paddle / Beengali Simplex shipping with gold contacts
I ordered the regular Simplex and paid a few bucks more due to making an EU payment. Anyhow, they will send me the model with the gold contacts as this is the one they have in stock, while the regular contacts will be manufactured in a few weeks. So if you plan to get one of these, ask if you could get the upgrade. 72, Chris Hs0zfe OT: is any one of you coming to Bangkok in November? Need help or have questions? [Elecraft] P.S.: Bengali Simplex gold plated paddles might be negotiated at the normal contact price when rush order is needed
Sorry, my main point was to say that I managed to get a considerable discount by asking for a rush delivery. They are shipping the gold contacts now... [Elecraft] proposal: why not design a monoband CW/SSB QRP TRX
In Fall 2002, I had some fun with a K1 and a dipole which almost touched the grass. A rotten CW beginner, I had all QSOs on 40 m. 40 m is where the action is, day and night. Others might favor other bands. But I would fancy a great monoband transceiver. More than a decade after the Norcal 40 A, I bet Wayne can amaze us all again! 72, Chris Hs0zfe ___ Want ideas for reducing your carbon footprint? Visit Yahoo! [Elecraft] Need advice - which Elecraft rig for SE Asia?
It's time to get a new rig. I'll be using it in Thailand - with bad conditions (Chinese radar, pirates and not many hams in neighboring countries). From experience, I know and love the K1 and K2. But right now I'm confused about which one to buy. The KX1 is very portable and with bad conditions, a few bands should suffice. But I also love the K3 hi. Is the K3's filters an improvement to the K2's variable one? Are machines or people building the factory assembled K3s? Has someone compared K2 and K3 side by side? Thank you!
