[Elecraft] FS: KPA500 & KAT500

2022-07-13 Thread Dave Agsten
After much thought I've decided to sell my KPA500/KAT500 combination. I have
the KPA1500 and just don't see using them both. The amp is wired for 220VAC.
Both are in good condition. I never pushed the amp too hard, usually around 400
out, never above 500. I don't believe I still have the original boxes but will
look for them. These are currently on backorder at Elecraft. Asking price is
$2400. Save over $1000 when you figure in the current price, possibly taxes and
shipping/insurance. I would prefer a somewhat local sale within about 125 miles
or so of Locust Grove, VA 22508. I can deliver them that far. If shipping is
required, I will use FedEx to pack and ship (even if I find the original boxes)
as they will do a much better job. That would add an estimated $100 to the
price. Please contact me only via e-mail at n...@comcast.net
mailto:n...@comcast.net . Tnx es 73, Dave N8AG

[Elecraft] K4 Pricing

2022-02-11 Thread Dave Agsten
Does anyone recall or know what the K4D price was if you ordered back in May of
2019?

For those who have received their K4 on the East Coast, what was the shipping
cost for just a K4D?

I'm on the fence here as to whether or not I should invest in the K4. I'm also
considering the ATU but I already have the KAT500. I'm not getting any younger.

[Elecraft] KXPA100

2013-04-29 Thread Dave Agsten
I've been way too busy with work to keep up on the status of the KXPA100
amplifier. What's the latest? When? Price? It seems like the Elecraft website
has been saying coming soon for way too long. I'm seriously considering the
Ten-Tec amp, especially when I compare pictures of the two. It looks like
Ten-Tec has more functionality built into it also. Multiple antennas and a
display.

[Elecraft] KX3 Delivered

2012-06-04 Thread Dave Agsten
I received KX3-F, serial number 0298 today. I ordered on the 28th at 1644Z.

I'm posting this to comment on shipping methods for Elecraft products. When I
ordered my KPA500 I designated UPS Ground as the preferred shipping method. I
received it 7 days after it was shipped by Elecraft. This time I changed my
shipping preference to USPS Priority Mail. Elecraft delivered my KX3 to the
U.S. Postal service on Friday afternoon, West Coast time, June 1st. I received
the package, in Virginia, today, the 4th. I don't live in a large metro area
and am somewhat out in the country, serviced by a small Post Office.  I think
that was great service by the USPS.

I just wanted to let folks know that Priority Mail is a way to receive your
package a few days sooner than via UPS Ground. (at least when it goes from West
Coast to the East Coast) It was a few bucks more but no where near the premium
you pay for faster UPS service.

[Elecraft] KX3 Order Number Decoding

2012-05-23 Thread Dave Agsten
I have not figured out the decoding process for the KX3 as they are being
posted on the Elecraft website. I ordered the KX3 on 12/28/11 at 11:44AM EDT. I
received the confirmation order number 2208-4844-0913. I can't decode how that
correlates to the numbers being posted on the website other than a smaller
number is earlier.

KX3-F     2208-4685-4272

KX3-K    2208-4068-6852

I revised my order to go with the factory version on Jan. 18th, long before any
KX3s were shipped. I'm wondering how that factors in? The order number remained
the same but it was now for a KX3-F.

Any cryptologists out there? :-)

Re: [Elecraft] For those at Dayton (KAT500)

2012-05-19 Thread Dave Agsten
The LDG AT-1000ProII is on a Dayton sale at Gigaparts for $459 with free
shipping through Monday, the 21st. (Must be ordered on-line) I just posted this
since there were $539 prices being mentioned on the reflector.

The KAT500 at $699 is quite a bit higher. Also, shipping to the East Cost via
Priority Mail adds another $27 to the total. ( A difference of $267 for me -
That's a considerable difference for me)

I have not seen the official specifications for the KAT500 so it's difficult to
compare. are any specs available somewhere? The 6 meter power handling spec was
mentioned but I can't understand exactly why you would even use a tuner on a 6
meter beam if it were properly adjusted. Does the KAT500 have an antenna switch
with separate memories for each?

I also see a few reviews of the AT-600 being used with the KPA500 without
issue. That one is $140 less than the AT-1000ProII.

[Elecraft] Shipping Status Updates

2012-04-12 Thread Dave Agsten
I'm wondering how often the shipping status gets updated? The last one on the
KX3 is dated March 29 and states that the page will be updated regularly.
Additionally it asks folks not to call or e-mail for a status on their order.
(Understandable for sure) I'm sure many would appreciate a simple update that
would allow them to see that some progress is being made. If regular updates
are promised in exchange for no phone calls or e-mails then the status should
be kept somewhat up-to-date.

Re: [Elecraft] High Power Tuner

2012-02-24 Thread Dave Agsten
The Ten Tec tuners have already been mentioned by Jim, K9YC. I've found that
the old Dentron MT-3000As will tune almost anything. I have a pair of them that
I use on a regular basis with a long wire and pair of 65' almost vertical wires
on the low bands, 160 up to 40. They work very well and seem to hold there
value based on asking prices I see on various sites. These would be a good
choice for someone looking for an interim tuner while waiting for the KAT500.
The MT-3000A uses a tapped inductor while another model has a roller inductor.
(MT-3000RA may be the model number) I tried a Palstar AT1500CV a few years ago
and it would not tune my antenna on 160. I put the Dentron on it and it tuned
right up. I plan on getting the KAT500 when Wayne says it's ready for prime
time. Until then, I'll wait and leave the Dentrons set for the low bands.

[Elecraft] KPAK3AUX Cable Setup

2012-02-20 Thread Dave Agsten
I'm having an issue with my RX antenna when using the Y-Cable that comes with
the KPAK3AUX cable kit. I have the K3 with sub receiver, KAT3 and a PR6 preamp.
I initially hooked up the Y-Cable on the back of the K3. One pigtail going to
the KPA500 via the KPAK3AUX cable and the other pigtail with just pin 11
connected to the PR6. (DIGOUT1 to control the preamp when on six meters) The
receiver went dead when switching to the RX ANT. The same rx antenna is
connected via a switch to the sub RX and works fine. So it's not an antenna
issue. I remove the Y-Cable and plug the DB15 plug for the PR6 into the K3 ACC
jack. Everything works as it should. RX antenna switches in and out. The preamp
turns on and off on 6 meters. When I put the KPAK3AUX Cable back in the ACC
jack and leave the PR6 DB15 disconnected, the RX antenna works as it should but
the 6 meter preamp does not. That's to be expected. I can't figure out just
what the Y-Cable is doing. The DIGOUT1 on
the K3 is on pin 11 of the ACC jack. That corresponds to the Inhibit input
on the KPA500. I'd have to assume that something on the amplifier end is
messing up the DIGOUT1 control line. Does anyone have a similar setup? Any
issues?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 RJ-45

2010-08-09 Thread Dave Agsten
    Actually, I don't believe it's necessarily an RJ11 jack (2 conductors or
wires) as it can also be used for RJ14 (4 conductors) or RJ25 (6 conductors).
It
is a jack that is capable of 6 positions. I believe the correct name depends on
how many wires are being used. I thought I'd just throw this out since we seem
to be nit picking over the modular jack that folks are referring to...

Re: [Elecraft] How is K3 QRQ QSK performance 50-100 WPM?

2010-05-14 Thread Dave Agsten
The other side of this coin is that many K3 owners probably could care less

Re: [Elecraft] W9OY comments about K3

2010-02-20 Thread Dave Agsten
Bob,

Have you seen the P3 in person? You seem to know a lot about it. I'm not aware
of any official published specs that define how much current draw it requires
or anything else. The point I was trying to make in my post was that this guy
saw it in person and expressed his opinion. Why does that get everyone's
knickers in a twist? If you've seen it, then you're entitled to your opinion
too. Might it be better to wait until you have one and have used it before
declaring it as the best thing since sliced bread?

I didn't purchase my K2 or K3 with portability being very high up on the list
of whys.

Once again, I didn't see anything negative or otherwise about the K3 in that
post. (I haven't figured out what Begali keys have to do with anything or the
60 Sony.)

Re: [Elecraft] W9OY comments about K3

2010-02-19 Thread Dave Agsten
I think some of you guys are really over reacting to the comment made in the
link that was referenced. I read the blog and did not even see the K3
mentioned. It did say:

Elecraft had their little answer to the pan adapter, what a joke. It was a
little screen maybe 9 and made the radio look like a toy. The quality of the
display was horrible.

He was at Orlando, saw the Elecraft display and made comments based on his
opinion. I wonder how many who have responded to the blog posting have not
actually seen the P3 in person but yet are ready to defend it to the death? At
this point, the P3 has not passed the acid test it will be put through by all
of the fanatics on this list. The jury is still out.

Based on my having owned a Flex 5000 for a few months at the same time I owned
a K3, I can say that the 5000 is a fine radio. I doubt if many could hear a
difference between the two. I can also say that it was not difficult to set the
5000 up with the Power SDR software. It worked very well. I actually had a bit
more difficulty getting the LP-Pan setup running on with the K3. With both of
these, I liked the large panadaptor display on the 22 monitor I have for the
shack computer. I don't think I would like a small display like the P3. I think
the size will impact the functionality. You may be able to zoom to smaller BW
segments on it, but I don't think the small size would work for me. With the
guesstimated price of around $700, I'm not interested at all. I'd go back the
the LP-Pan solution before I would lay out that kind of money for a P3. With
that said, I did not keep either my LP-Pan or Flex 5000 setup. My first radio
back in 1966 had knobs
and controls on the front panel and so does my K3 in 2010. As far as I'm
concerned, it's not a radio if you can't spin a knob..just my own opinion
and preference.

As a side note, I did find that even with the panadaptor display and the
ability to click on a signal to tune the radio to that frequency, you still had
to fine tune it with the mouse or other means. That just wasn't for me. It was
cool to see the signals across the BW of the display, but you can only work one
at a time.

I hope those of you who purchase a P3 enjoy it and find it useful.

I find that both the 200Hz and 500Hz filters work just fine. I decided to save

Re: [Elecraft] Deep Solar Minimum

2009-04-03 Thread Dave Agsten
No problem with a deep solar minimum lasting for another year here, even
longer. Some folks operate on the low bands, 160 and 80 maybe 40. It's a good
time in the cycle for us. When things peak it will be nice if 6 meters opens
up. As far as 20 and the other bands gosince we're talking about fish
on another topic here, I can't resist. It's like shooting fish in a
barrel. What fun is that?certainly not much of a challenge. Now's the time
to make use of a superior radio. A good bit of that superiotity will be lost
when the cycle gets toward the peak

Bravo Wayne,

Well said on the software development of the K3. It amazes me when folks on
here start listing items they want to see implemented and then define just how
difficult or easy they are to do. It's as if they think their assigned degree
of difficulty will expedite the implementation. Patience folks. I'm betting
that very few, if any, of the those posting on here could do the technical job
that the Elecraft team is doing.

[Elecraft] RE: 6 Meters

2008-12-24 Thread Dave Agsten

I find the K3 to be just fine on 6 meters. For extremely weak signal work, an
external preamp may be needed. Time will tell. I've used the Flex 5000A, Pro
III and the K3 on 6 meters. As far as signal reception goes, I could not notice
any difference between the 3 rigs. I could A/B/C them. The PRO III and Flex
5000A now have new homes.that says it all. If one can hardly hear a KW
station a mile away on 6, then there's either a serious problem with the K3 or
something's not right in the station/antenna setup. I'm looking forward to the
Spring/Summer on 6 meters.

[Elecraft] RE: K3 CQWW

2008-12-02 Thread Dave Agsten

I agree that there were quite a few stations running ultra high speed CW. They
should slow down a bit or at least answer a station replying at a slower speed.
I'm not sure just what the definition of really slow speed is these days, but
some operators, myself included, love to use a straight key. The K3 has a jack
just for my straight keys in addition to having one for paddles. Are we QRMing
these contest stations by using a straight key? If so, too bad. They can choose
not to answer, but we certainly have the right to reply.at any speed. There
are many times when contest stations QRM those who are just on to operate and
are not participating in the event. An example of that would be SSB on 160
spreading out all the way down to the low end.

Speaking of those ultra high speed CW stations, I have to wonder if they are in
a radio contest or a computer contest? Isn't the computer doing most of the
operating. I don't know, since having the PC run the show, as far as contest
exchanges are concerned, is of absolutely no interest to me. Does the computer
copy and select the calling station? ( I have no idea?? ) If it does, then it
really is a computer contest and not a ham radio contest.

C'ya in the ARRL 160

[Elecraft] RE: K3 Bigger S-Meter

2008-11-01 Thread Dave Agsten

Right on Joe If you want a test instrument, purchase a test instrument
and don't load up the cost of the K3 for all of the other
users.

It seems like a few folks are never satisfied. They want more and more and
more... It seems like there is no end to it.

I don't think too many folks really worry themselves to death over the S-Meter
reading. I'm more concerned with being able to just copy a cw signal, not
wondering if it's S6 or S7. It seems rather silly.

[Elecraft] K2 40 Meter Problem

2008-11-01 Thread Dave Agsten
My brother is working on an intermittent problem with 40 meter receive. It
started out with 40 meters going almost dead. Tapping on the chassis would
return the receive function to normal for awhile. He just opened up the radio
and tried to track down the problem. The KXV60 board, when tapped, would, make
the problem disappear. He removed the board and narrowed the problem down to
the 40 meter bandpass filter area. He looked at the solder joints and did not
see any that looked bad. He's going to look those over again with more light
and a bigger magnifying glass. Then, if he doesn't find anything, he will
reheat all of the solder joints. He says that it seems most likely that the
problem is around L1 and L2 since when he taps in that area, the problem goes
away and then comes back. It may be the transformers, a relay or some other
component. Hopefully, he'll find a bad solder joint or reheating them all will
solve the problem. I'm wondering if anyone has
possible solutions, a way to narrow the problem down further or any
suggestions.

[Elecraft] Re: K3 6 Meter Preamp

2008-10-24 Thread Dave Agsten
I found that the K3, as built, was a bit better on 6 meters than either my Pro
III or TS-2000x. (A/B/C switching) I've since sold both of those radios. I
bought a 6 meter preamp from High Sierra Microwave. It has about the same specs
as the ARR P50VDG mentioned on here and the Elecraft offering. I use low band
receiving antennas and merely switch them to the RX In via a patch panel. I'll
use RX Out to the 6 meter preamp and just patch it in the same way when I'm on
6 meters. There aren't many times when I have to switch from 160 or 80 CW to 6
meters so a patch panel works just fine.

[Elecraft] K3 - KRX3

2008-10-20 Thread Dave Agsten
After reading all of the stories of problems with the KRX3, I've decided not to
install the one I received a couple of months ago. I originally planned to wait
and see how other installations played out especially after reading that the
front panel had to be removed and messed with in order to do the KRX3
installation. That's the last thing I wanted to do. I took extreme care with
the front panel during the initial kit assembly and had no problems at all. I
think that taking something like the front panel assembly apart is just asking
for trouble. I'll bet others now agree with me. I ordered my KRX3 as part of my
original purchase just after Dayton in 2007. Had I really understood all that
would be involved with the KRX3 installation, I would have waited until it was
available and done the whole thing at once. Even though the KRX3 manual might
have been available at the time for customers to review, I didn't. There just
aren't enough hours in the day. I
do think that Elecraft should have emphasized the fact that front panel
disassembly would be required if the KRX3 was not installed at initial build.
Especially when you consider that the KRX3 was listed right along with all of
the other K3 options on the glossy brochure that everyone grabbed at Dayton,
2007. Since the KRX3 was listed as an available option, I ordered it along with
everything else. I even fronted Elecraft 50% up front and got nothing in
return.but that's another story. As I said, I hold Elecraft guilty for the
KRX3 issues. I don't think it makes sense to take the radio apart to install an
option that was delayed for a long time. At the very least, the issues
associated with the KRX3 installation should have been made a lot clearer.

If anyone who has read this far is interested in the KRX3, I have mine
available at a lower price than what it is currently going for. I bought it at
the initial offering price. I also have an extra 500Hz filter that was
designated for the KRX3. If interested, please contact me off list via e-mail.

[Elecraft] Why US Interface Navigator?

2008-10-18 Thread Dave Agsten
I see folks using the US Interface box along with HRD. What are the advantages
of using Navigator with HRD over just using HRD alone? I have LP-Pan here but
have not yet set it up.

I primarily operate low band CW on 160 and 80 ( 40 when there's not much on the
lower bands). I'd like to play around with RTTY but that's about it for now.
I'm also interested in CW Skimmer. Is the Navigator really going to be of much
benefit for any of this other than add another level of complexity?

[Elecraft] K3 Topics

2008-09-08 Thread Dave Agsten
This list is quickly becoming somewhat of a waste of time to read. There are
those who would like to redesign the K3 or critique various aspects of it, such
as distortion or keying, to those who would like it personalized for
themselves. It seems like Elecraft gives an inch and then many want to take a
mile. I have to wonder if many of these folks ever just operate their K3? It's
a fine radio just as it is. Why not just get on the air and enjoy it? That's
what I'm going to do rather than spend time looking at each post. Posts about
things like xvtr operation or various settings are fine, but all of the numbers
from various tests might be best discussed directly rather than take up lotrs
of space on here.

500Hz filters have -.80 and -.77 offsets, while the 2.7Ks have -.84 and -.90. I
don't really care about SSB, but am a little concerned about what difference it
might make on 160 and 80 CW weak signal reception. I guess there's one way to
find out... I'm wondering if I should fudge the setup a little for the
filters and split the difference on the offsets. Has anyone tried anything like
this? I thought about paying the $30/set to get them matched, but thought that
Elecraft should do this when they shipped the KRX3. If someone ordered 5 pole
filters for the KRX3, how hard would it be to ask what the offset was in any
original filters that were being mirrored in the 2nd RX? They could send a
matched filter with the order. I may have missed it, but I don't recall much
being said back in May of 2007
about matched filters in the two receivers. If it were a requirement to
properly implement one of the features of the radio, then the matching should
be included as part of the purchase.

If matching optimizes performance, then perhaps those of us with different
offsets should try swapping filters to get it exact or as close as possible.
Maybe it's not necessary but it does have me wondering?

[Elecraft] RE: K3 - KRX3 shipping question

2008-08-04 Thread Dave Agsten
I saw a post last week that someone who ordered on May 7, 2007 received their
KRX3 notice. I guess that means it would be shipping in 1 to 2 weeks. I ordered
my KRX3 with my original order on May 25, 2007 which equated to K3 #414. I have
not yet received my notice.

I would imagine that those with higher serial numbers have a few months to wait
yet.

I agree, a shipping status on the KRX3 by either order date or serial number
would be nice.

2008-07-26 Thread Dave Agsten
Saw this But I really don't think it's about panel space, it's
about how the designers want us to use the K3...

Isn't that true with the Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu radios? You have to use it the
way it's designed... What a concept. I hope Elecraft has their filter
working on this one, drops it, and continues to address refining performance
items.

My K3 doesn't have to go through AM and FM to get from to get from CW to SSB. I
just press the ^ to go from CW to SSB and the opposite direction to go from SSB

[Elecraft] RE: KRX3 KDVR Installs

2008-07-05 Thread Dave Agsten
Since the installation of both of these options requires removing the front
panel, wouldn't it have made more sense to release these two at the same time?
It seems to me that you're just flirting with trouble when you keep opening the
radio up time after time. I know some will say it's easy, no problem, blah,
blah, blah. But, after working with radios, electronics and computers over the
last 40 years, I know for a fact that even the best technicians and engineers
screw up from time to time. So, anything can happen. Repeated opening up of the
K3 surely increases the odds of something being screwed up.

As for me, I'm debating about whether to cancel my KRX3 order and will not
purchase the DVR since it's not going to be ready at the same time. Worst case
is I'll only be opening up the radio one more timeat least to the extent
that is required for these two options. If I need DVR capability and perhaps a
second RX, I'll use my 5000A.

[Elecraft] K3 KRX3 Install

2008-07-04 Thread Dave Agsten
I'm wondering what those who have installed the 2nd RX in their K3 think of the
procedure? I took a quick look at the manual and it seems like you have to take
half the radio apart for this. I'm not sure I want to do this to a rig that is
currently working FB. I'm not crazy about pulling the front panel apart for
one. It looks like the 2nd RX installation in the Flex 5000A was a piece of
cake compared to the K3.

Any comments on how the install went would be appreciated. Did anyone
installing the 2nd RX into an operating K3 end up with the radio not working
post-install? I should be getting my Katiegram for the KRX3 soon and need to
decide if I'm going to cancel or not.

[Elecraft] K2 Modification Help

2008-06-20 Thread Dave Agsten

G'day to all,

I have a couple of K2s that I would like to exchange options in and am
wondering just how involved it would be. I did not build either of these radios
initially.

Here are the two radios:

K2/10 S/N 02689 with KSB2, K160RX, K60XV, KNB2, KAF2, KAT2

k2/100 S/N 3523 with KSB2 ( I have KNB2, K160RX and KAF2 kits to install )

What I would like to do is pull the KPA100 out of the one radio and make what
is currently the QRP radio a K2/100. I'd like to know if there is anything to
be aware of or reasons that this might be a bad idea. How difficult of as
project would this be?

[Elecraft] RE: K3 Thoughts

2008-06-01 Thread Dave Agsten
Well said John,

The ME, ME, ME generation is everywhere these days. Unfortunately, that
includes ham radio. All of the MEs want their own custom K3. I love the K3
just the way it is. I look forward to whatever Wayne, Eric and company decide
to incorporate into the K3 or other radios in the future. I concede the fact
that I don't know how to design a radio like the K3. Many on here apparently
think they could do a better job with their better ideas. I'm willing to
simply learn how to operate a new radio whether or not it has one button band
selection, band stacking functions, or size issues, etc.etc.etc. So much of
it comes across as whining, not constructive suggestions. Everyone has the
right to make their own choice when purchasing a radio. If they don't like
their K3, they can sell it and buy something that satisfies their ME without
having to compromise. ( Good luck there!) Maybe these folks should spend more
time operatng and less whining.

[Elecraft] RE: A real bandscope

2008-05-19 Thread Dave Agsten
A bandscope like the Flex 5000A's would be ideal. It works great.as does
the radio, even on CW since I have no need for anything close to 50 wpm. Keep
in mind that the Flex 5000 uses it's own, high performance sound card, not a
typical PC sound card. But there are knobs and buttons on the K3. I still have
to have a radio with knobsa K3 and a K2. I may control these rigs from
a PC at times, but still love to tune and listen. It will be interesting to see
what evolves for a bandscope with the K3 even though I probably will not be
interested in one.

[Elecraft] K3 No Six Meters

[Elecraft] A Better Way?

2008-05-08 Thread Dave Agsten
It seems like many folks on here have THEIR better way for Elecraft to do
just about anything and everything. Instead of being satisfied with all of the
good things that Elecraft does do, they find all kinds of things to whine and
complain about. They seem to have a better way to do the firmware upgrades,
design the hardware, update the documentation and manuals, etc, etc.

How about letting Wayne, Eric and company do what we already know they do best?
Suggestions are fine and they seem to appreciate them. However, just plant the
seed and don't go on for paragraph after paragraph of just how it should be
done. I'm sure many, like myself, get tired of paging through all of this junk
while looking for things that might be helpful.

What other radio manufacturer even offers a forum like this? Focus on the good,
make a straight to the point suggestion if necessary, and stop whining and
complaining. It seems like many must spend more time thinking about posts than
operating their K3s and other Elecraft radios. Get on the air.

Well done Wayne and Eric. Keep doing things your way. It works.

[Elecraft] RE: K3 at Auction

2008-04-27 Thread Dave Agsten
I guess that he ordered a few K3s to make a profit on them while Elecraft
catches up. Some folks must be willing to pay a premium for not having to wait.
The law of Supply and Demand is applied here, although, in my opinion, it's
sure not, in the spirit of ham radio. I know I wouldn't do it, nor would I bid
on it. It's the same thing as ticket scalping, even though that is illegal in
some places. Free enterprise is just that, free to do whatever is legal.

The listing on ebay mentions the reserve price at that of an assembled kit due
to sales tax, shipping and other fees. $80 or so for shipping and other fees
from Aptos, California to Carlsbad, California? Other sealed Elecraft K3
items in future auctions are also mentioned. I won't be bidding on those
either. I would hope that no one would bid on them but that won't happen.

[Elecraft] K3 and Omni VII.

2008-03-25 Thread Dave Agsten
Let me start off by stating that I'm not looking for a
spec by spec comparison of these two radios. The jury
is already in on that. I hope I can just keep a few
shots from firing by saying that first.

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has both the
Omni VII and a K3. I'd like to know from an operating
perspective what you think of both radios. I know they
each have their strengths and a few weaknesses. I'm
interested in A/B, side by side testing, during real
operating conditions. Does one hear better than the
other? Is one easier to operate? I know this is a
personal thing, but I'd like to hear about it. Also,
anything else that comes to mind would be appreciated.

I had an OMNI V back when they first came out. It was
a great radio at the time and probably can still hold
its own against most of what's out there now. I've
just always wanted to buy another Ten-Tec and did look
for a V for awhile. With the VII out there now, that
would seem the way to go at this point. I do have a
second K3, a QRP version, on order.

Another reason for looking at the Omni VII is that I'm
very interested in buying as much American made gear
for my shack as I can. I have a 756 PRO III that is
the last of my Japanese stuff. All that's saving it at
this point is the real-time bandscope. I'm still
considering either selling it or trading it in.

Please respond off list if you think this might
generate a lot of flack. That's not my intention at
all. I'm just beating the bushes for information.

[Elecraft] RE: Shipping status accurate?

2008-03-14 Thread Dave Agsten

It would appear that Elecraft is ahead of their posted
shipping schedule. Two posts on here indicate that K3s
ordered on the 28th and 30th of August are on the way.
The Shipping Status on the Elecraft website says
that through today, 3/14/08, they would be shipping
orders received up until August 23rd. That would
indicate that they may be a week or more ahead of
schedule.

As far as the Pro III goes, unless you're going to buy
both it and a K3, WAIT for your K3. I have both radios
and there's no doubt that the K3 is far superior. I
did use the Pro III to verify my K3s Ref. Oscillator
calibration as it specified at .5ppm. It seems to be
right on. The bandscope is nice for 6 and 10 meters,
but it sure isn't a deal breaker..

Another issue that has popped up on here lately
mentions the harsh ?? K3 audio. I know it's an
individual thing, but to me, the K3 sounds much
better. I did a lot of listening to to VP6DX and, now,
TX5C. I switched back and forth between the two radios
and, not only preferred the way the K3 sounded, but
was also able to hear them better on the K3.

[Elecraft] RE: Price Increases

2008-03-03 Thread Dave Agsten

Doug Wrote:

This price increase should not have been a surprise
to anyone.

When the K3 first came out, there were numerous posts
about gosh, how
inexpensive is that!.
It was even compared to a loaded K2 and boy..they
sure were close.

Did this make sense to us? Not really (marketing
aside). We were all
rubbing our hands together, thrilled and gleeful at
the obvious
mistake Elecraft had made in its pricing. Don't
think so? Read the
old posts.

The initial price of the KPA3 was LESS THAN the KPA100
for the K2.
Did that make sense? Not to me. And with the KPA3,
not only do you
get a 100 watt PA, you get TWO cooling fans with a 4
speed controller.

You forgot to mention that the K3 is still less than
an Omni VII. It's even less with the second receiver
added in. I did a configuration of the Omni VII with
500Hz filter shipping to my address. $2793. The
K3/100 with 500Hz filter AND second receiver. $2516
True, the K3 is in kit form, but it's fun to put it
together. ($2816 Factory Built) There's no second
receiver option for the Omni VII.

I guess those who ordered early are being indirectly
rewarded for their wait. I was lucky enough to change
my filters and add the KXV3 before the first increase.
I have K3 #414 and it was worth the wait and it was a
bargain when you consider I paid less for it than the
PRO III I bought a year ago.

[Elecraft] RE: Secret Hardware Changes

2008-02-28 Thread Dave Agsten

All of this whining about what Elecraft should do is
getting old. I think they keep folks much better
informed than any other ham radio company.

I don't see where folks get off thinking that Elecraft
is obligated to tell them any and all things that are
going on. If there's something that Wayne or Eric WANT
to share, fine. If not, that's their choice. I believe
that they will provide whatever is needed when THEY
are ready to do so. Take a pill.

[Elecraft] RE: ESD Mat

2008-02-23 Thread Dave Agsten

Per a request, here's some additional info on the ESD
mat from Radio Shack:

They call it an Anti-Static Service Kit.

Radio Shack Part# 276-2370

Specs:

Vinyl - 26 x 24 inches
Ground Cord 10' - Banana type plug or an alligator
clip
Connector: Banana Jack - built-in 1Meg Ohm resistor
Wrist Strap Length: 6'
Two Sewn-In Pockets

I was actually surprised to see that a small Radio
Shack in Fredericksburg, VA had three or four of these
in stock.

[Elecraft] RE: ESD Mat

2008-02-22 Thread Dave Agsten
Paul,

I picked up an ESD mat at Radio Shack. I was a nice
size, had pockets for tools to stay in, the wrist
strap on a coiled cable and a 6 foot or so connection
to ground either via and alligator clip or banana
plug. The biggest problem was remembering to
disconnect the wrist strap ( via a banana plug ) when
I got up from the table. :-)

It was $24.95. The first employee in the store didn't
have a clue as to what I was asking for.no
surprise there.

[Elecraft] K3 Serial Number 414 Completed

2008-02-18 Thread Dave Agsten

After assembling my K3 over the last three days I'm
very impressed with the manual, the fit of the boards
and the construction and fit of the chassis. At this
point, I have not put the radio on the air. ( I'm
waiting until the XYL hits the hay tonight so I can
stay up as late as I want to. - She has to work
tomorrow, but I'm off :-) )

I do have a couple of comments about the assembly and
calibration of the K3.

First of all - the standoffs on the RF board:
Wouldn't it be better to mount all of the
standoffs on the RF board right at the start? If I'm
missing something here, please fill me in. I found
that installing some of the standoffs after installing
things like the PA shield was a bit difficult and
would have been easier to do right up front. Just a
thought..

The Chassis Stiffener gets installed and then removed
if your installing the KPA3. It seems like you could
make the decision to install it or not based on if you
have the KPA3 option rather than remove it if you're
going to install the KPA3. I guess you would have to
make a note on the speaker grill cloth positioning but
I would rather do that than take out the top cover
screws an additional time. I don't like taking a
chance at removing paint from either the screw or
screw hole by installing/uninstalling things anymore
than you have to.

One great tip in the manual deals with attaching the
front panel assembly to the RF board. Make a note of
the screw in the 2D fastener that can block
installation when the DSP board hits it. PAGE 37. I'd
suggest removing it before attempting to mate the
front panel with the FOUR connectors. Also, when you
think you have it properly installed, check it at
least three times to make sure all pins are properly
inserted. I had one set of pins that missed their
connector even though it appeared that all was well at
first. Use a bright LED flashlight to check all the
connections out several times. I even had my wife take
a look just to get the use of a second set of eyes.
There's even a step in the manual to remind you to
re-install the screw removed fron the 2D fastener.
Iwas not hard to do that at all and made the front
panel much easier to install.

On Calibration of the Reference Oscillator - I found
that I had to readjust the audio level of WWV and the
Monitor level several times before I think I got it
right. Also, it would seem to me that if the
calibration is done correctly, you should be able to
hear the undistorted audio annoucement from WWV at the
top of each minute. It should be nice and clear.
Someone correct me if I'm off base here.

I'm waiting to put her on the air tonight.

[Elecraft] K3 Shipping Status

2008-02-09 Thread Dave Agsten

I'm wondering if anyone has heard of K3 shipping dates
for orders later than May 25th? I received an invoice
number/notice last Sunday but one item was missing
from it. I notified Lisa of the issue immediately and
was told I'd receive a corrected invoice. I've heard
nothing since. The original invoice said the radio
would ship in 5 to 7 daysfrom last Sunday. Even if
that's business days, I would think I should have
heard something by now. Tuesday, the 12th would be 7
business days.

Any updates from anyone?

[Elecraft] RE: Issues and Enhancement Documents.

2008-02-06 Thread Dave Agsten

It seems like most of those calling for a list of
issues and enhancements are ones who have already
received their K3. First, they whined about the
delayed shipping, and now, once they have their K3,
have found something else to whine about. Maybe they
should consider investing the time spent shooting out
e-mail after e-mail in learning about their K3. If you
think something's an issue, inquire about it ONCE and
get back to the learning process. Folks on this list
will respond with a status in most cases. That should
be enough for now. Let Wayne and Eric and their staff
focus on the business of catching up on their shipping
and the other things they consider important. As Ken
said It's their business. Let them attend to it.
I'm sure, that in time, all of these issues will be
addressed and, in most cases, answered.

Perhaps the price one pays for wanting to be first in
line for a K3 is to also have to use their own
initiative for awhile to figure things out. At times
it appears that this reflector has become a crutch for
even the simple questions or ones that have been asked
and answered numerous times.

Let's let Wayne, Eric and the Elecraft staff focus on
the business of getting caught up on their K3 orders
and the issues THEY want to focus on. I'm sure there
are many folks on here who would love to just get
their hands on their K3.

[Elecraft] RE: New concept/tool for CW dxing

2008-02-04 Thread Dave Agsten

I guess this is a tool for those who either only had
to pass a 5 wpm CW test or none at all. Now they can
QRM the low end CW portions of the bands by pushing a
button and letting their radio send 599 or some
other programmed response that they couldn't do with a
key. It's rather sad.
