Re: [Elecraft] K3s Quick Memories

I use a Genovation Keypad to fire macros at the rig, and one of them is
a power setting macro. I would imagine you could use a FN key on the
P3/SVGA if you have one.

I can probably reverse-engineer the removal of the front panel from the

For those like myself who operate 99 percent CW and don't even keep a

With the proliferation of 3D printers in many ham workshops these days, if you

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Ham Radio near high voltage power lines?

2021-04-27 Thread Dave Cole
Or use a tinySA, and take a look at entire bands at one time... I have
found that the tinySA is a real assist in correlating RFI sources. See:

https://www.nk7z.net/

to get to my base page, or

https://www.nk7z.net/tinysa/

to go directly to the article.

At the end of the tinySA article is a photo of my 80 Meter RFI, as
viewed by a tinySA, and a 6BTV with 40 radials, ground mounted. The
source is 4 blocks from the antenna. This will give you an idea of what
you will be able to do with the tinySA RFI wise.

...and to keep it Elecraft related, I will be connecting my tinySA to
the RX out jack on the K3.

Oddly, I don't recall there being a problem on the 80m or 40m dipoles.
You could always do a quick noise check with a mobile HF rig or a handheld

Just moved to a new QTH and there are high voltage power lines cutting
across the corner of our property running NW direction. The house is on the
East side of the lines.

Is it reasonable to expect good operability or is it a wash? I don't want to
go through the troubles if I'll just be frustrated.

Was looking to do a 60' tower for the high bands (I'll still be below the
lines height wise), multiband vertical (low bands 80/40/30) , and
dipole(80/40).

Vertical is planned to have 60 or more radials.

Thanks in advance.

return for warranty repair. The EEPROM was corrupted.

All was OK until about 4 years ago, the P3, occasionally, would not boot up. I
received some guidance from one of the engineers, to check a capacitor in the
P3 power supply. If it was a tantalum (10 uF I believe), it was the incorrect
value, and to change to 0.1uf (1206 sized). After the capacitor change, no
more powerup issues. I believe there was a supply sequencing issue.

I am looking for the details, and when found, I will post.

I contacted Elecraft technical support and they had me try a few things but

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Failure, and question

2021-04-12 Thread Dave Cole

Hi Dave New,

It does help, and thank you... Mine has come back to life as well,
(power cycling it), and I am worried about turning it off now as well...

I will get an RSA from Elecraft and send it in... I'll report back to
the list what they find, and how long it took to get repaired.

If you discover the issue, please let me know if you would! I won't be
sending mine back tomorrow, but sooner than later. Also, THANK YOU
again for the information.

I've been leaving the K3s/P3 powered on continuously, but recently
started turning them off, to save some 'always on' energy while trying
to figure out why our house is running about 1200 watts continuously.

So, when powering on the combination (the P3 is set to power on with the
K3s power), very nearly always now, the internal display fails to come
on, but the SVGA display always works.  Normally, cycling the power
switch on the P3 recovers the internal display, but just yesterday, I
had to cycle the power several times before it came up.

I'm now leaving things powered on, until I can troubleshoot what the
issue is.  I did go as far as looking in the P3 manual to see if there
is a coin cell battery in it, that might need replacing, but that is
apparently not so.

I'm concerned about the loss of settings, which may point to a corrupted
EEPROM.  Reflashing the P3 hasn't fixed this, and so far, I've not tried
a 'factory reset' on the P3, which would lose all my settings.

Hope that helps,

Rick,
A further thought on this...  Next time your P3 fails, can you try and
grab an image from it using the utility?  I just thought of that, mine
will not grab an image, when it is failed, so it is probably not the
backlight on mine.

A bit more data:

1. The (3 utility can talk to it.
2. If I try and capture an image, it goes through the motions, but no
image is captured.

3. It accepts commands via a keyboard.
4. A load from the last config file did not correct things.

We've done that a LOT (at least 6 years) with two KPA500s on Honday
2000i generators for CQP and 7QP expeditions. Two can run on a single
Honda, but with some voltage sag between the gen and the unregulated PSU
in the KPA500. You have to set the "right" tap in the KPA500's primary
(low, med, high) that hits the "just right" HV so that the KPA doesn't
protect because it's too high key up and too low key down. With two KPAs
on a single 2000i, both can be running CW at the same time at about
300W. Maybe both full power if one CW, one SSB.

W6GJB's contesting trailer is set up for two K3/P3/SVGA/KPA500/KAT500
stations, which we mostly run on CW. Several years ago, he bought the
paralleling kit, so we run two in parallel, both in economode, running
our entire station.

A single 2000i will run an entire single-TX station in economode.

Glen (GJB) has done propane conversions for his 2000i, and recently for
my new 2200i. There's a company that sells the kit. Much safer and more
convenient than gasoline.

KPA3 to eliminate fan noise pickup evident after the new synthesizers are

extend coverage down to the 630 meter band. I’m sure there are others. See the
mod instructions available on the Elecraft site if you go sleuthing inside the

Have you thought about asking Elecraft for the work orders for the K3’s S/N?

Re: [Elecraft] Inventorying a K3/P3 nk7z

2021-03-30 Thread Dave Cole

Keith,

First off, thank you very much for the reply! I do appreciate it greatly!

That is the info I needed! I now know the menus will give me most of
what I need. As far as I know the radio has not been reset, nor has
anyone been in it! That makes things a lot simpler! I do thank you
sir! Take care, and and stay safe! Again, thank you.

Hi Dave;
Since it was here less than a year ago, no need to send it for updates.
If it hasn't been altered, you can get all the options/filters from the
menus.
If it has been reset for some reason, we can send you the configuration
file to re-load that was saved at last service.

We don't inventory every radio, but you could load that file into the
radio and then go thru the menus.
This would be a fairly accurate list unless you believe he
removed/changed any filters or options, in which case you will have to
open it up and take out the Sub receiver and open the sub receiver to
inventory all items.

Someone could also load that file into another radio (I believe it is
advanced mode of the K3 Utility lets you skip past the serial #
mismatch) then look thru the menus. Don't forget to save the host
radio's config file before doing this so you can restore it!

Hi Brian,

Thank you for the suggestions, and the tidbits of the additional steps
for add on items like new synths, etc. I have saved your email.

I have sent Elecraft three seperate email requests across three weeks,
and gotten precisely zero replies from supp...@elecraft.com address...

Very dissapointing, not even an acknoledgment they got the mail... It
is like firing email into a black hole...

I just resent the 4th request, this time to sales, support, and
webmaster in hopes I can get in touch with someone at the Elecraft!

I understand things are busy, and I understadn things are diffucult to
to COVID, etc., but three weeks, and three requests later I am getting

There have also been numerous component adds/mods over the years. Three that I
did a couple years ago are 1. Increase the 12vdc accessory power from 500 ma to
1 A. Evidence is a 1A sticker on the rear of the K3. 2. Add a capacitor to the
KPA3 to eliminate fan noise pickup evident after the new synthesizers are
installed. 3. Addition of a capacitor to the KBPF3 general coverage BPFs to
extend coverage down to the 630 meter band. I’m sure there are others. See the
mod instructions available on the Elecraft site if you go sleuthing inside the
box. These are a bit inconsequential but add value to the K3.

Have you thought about asking Elecraft for the work orders for the K3’s S/N?

Good luck and thank you for helping out the family. Sorry you lost a friend.

For the P3, the options are the SVGA board and the TX board.

O.k. I'll bite. I started in amateur radio long enough ago to know how to use
a BFO and to know how to zero beat an AM or CW signal. How does one zero beat
a suppressed carrier single sideband phone signal? I just tune until the voice
sounds like I think the voice should sound like. It is very subjective and I
certainly can't tune to less than 12 Hz error.

What technique are others using that enables them to "zero beat" SSB phone to
better than 12 Hz accuracy? I seldom use phone but I'd like to have this technique in my
bag of tricks.

Re: [Elecraft] Big Knob Fail

2021-02-17 Thread Dave Cole
I think the issue is in shipping... When, (not if), the shipper drops
your K3 to the ground from 4 or 5 feet up, and the rig stops with a 20G
or 30G, (or more), pulse at end to motion, the weighted knob then
becomes a rather good looking hammer hitting the encoder shaft... Never
a good idea...

If someone has a definitive answer to this, I would love to see it...

Lots of Collins guys like to install those weighted tuning * knobs on their
S-Lines, which were NOT made to take excessive extra wear caused by the
very
heavy knob.

* The "weighted" Collins knob actually has the outer skirt replaced with
one
made of solid brass which is painted satin black to match the standard
Bakelite knobs.
It was never intended to be used on the regular 200 kHz tuning via pinch
roller, S-Line but was designed to smooth-out the klunky tuning in their
51S-1 receiver.
It does great for that.

One of the problems with the knobs is that sometimes, people change the
injected molded knob out for a HEAVY machined knob. The mechanism inside
the
radio is not built for this type of installation. A rapid spin with the
angular momentum and torque of the heavy knob will wear out the device.
This will require taking the front panel off and replacing the component.
This has been discussed many times in the past on this forum. It sounds
like
his main frequency control device is worn out/damaged and will need
replacement. I would continue to call Elecraft until I get through to a
technician and most likely have it sent in and fixed.

I wish your friend well in getting his rig fixed. Withdrawal is a bummer.

Hi,

Remember those filters are Roofing Filters, not the normal filters you
see in a rig, and use to isolate a CW signal...

The digital filter, (you just dial the bandwidth you want from the front
panel), in the K3 far surpasses anything I have used in the past, I get
to very narrow bandwidths, and not a sign of ringing...

Re: [Elecraft] Efficiency of MFJ remotely-tuned loop antennas

MFJ makes a pair of small, remotely-tuned loop antennas, the MFJ-1786
that covers 10-30 MHz and the MFJ-1788 that covers 7 to 21+ MHz.  As far
as I can tell, the two antennas are identical except for the size of the
tuning capacitor.  Each consists of a 3 foot (91 cm) diameter loop made
of aluminum tubing and a plastic housing that contains the tuning
capacitor, motor, and coupling loop.  No control cable is required since
the control voltage is sent from the control box in the shack to the
motor in the antenna via the coaxial cable.

Before I purchase one of these I wanted to get an idea of the efficiency
of such a small loop.  MFJ is silent on the subject so I did my own
calculations.  The calculations and results are on a 1-page document
that I uploaded to Dropbox and can be downloaded here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/l8mv67cjrck2ssn/MFJ-1786-1788.pdf?dl=0

My calculations are based on the assumption that the efficiency of the
MFJ antennas is similar to the (no longer manufactured) AEA Isoloop (my
reasoning for that is in the document) and that AEA's specification of
72% efficiency at 14 MHz is correct.  From that number I can calculate
the efficiency and gain on all the other bands.

If you don't want to download the document, here is a summary of the
results:

Freq    Eff    Gain with respect to a half-wave dipole
MHz    dB    dBd
7.0    -7.3    -7.7
10.1    -3.5    -3.9
14.0    -1.4    -1.8
18.068    -0.6    -1.0
21.0    -0.4    -0.8
24.89    -0.2    -0.6
28.0    -0.15    -0.5

I'd be interested in any comments people may have on the accuracy of
my assumptions and calculations in the document.

Re: [Elecraft] Waaay OT: A new kind of QRM to be aware of ... warning issued by FCC today

2021-01-18 Thread Dave Cole

Grant,

All of this topic drift into areas non-Elecraft, (and there is a massive
amount of it), is a direct result of the moderation efforts Elecraft
puts into this group.

If the group owners, (Elecraft), wanted things tighter, they would
moderate more tightly. If they don't have staff to moderate, then they
should not worry when things get off topic, which for the most part they
don't, or close the group.

This style of moderation allows folks to push the limits for short
periods of time, between moderation events, which is why we get posts
about everything else. The longer the time period between moderation
events, the further topics drift.

This method of moderation almost guarantees topic drift. I would LOVE
to see just Elecraft information here, and nothing else... But not my
group, so I just delete most non-Elecraft posts.

Re: [Elecraft] OT: Thoughts on MFJ-1026 or any other phasing box

2021-01-07 Thread Dave Cole

Hi,
I have used one of those, and they seem to work great on a single
specular source... If you have more than one source of RFI, not so
good... If the source is distributed, not so good... Needs to be
specular in nature for best results. I have had better luck with an
ANC-4, as opposed to the MFJ-1026.

I have a set of articles on RFI location and suppression here:

That will give you the list of all RFI related articles on my site.

Maybe this isn't new news but the KE7X.com website that is a treasure
trove of Elecraft information seems to be expired and "parked" -- not
accessible. Being new to Elecraft, I just learned Fred became an SK in
May of 2019.

I just received a Lulu.com printed copy of "The Elecraft K3 and P3 -
Third Edition" book for my new-to-me K3 that I bought recently, it's an
awesome reference.

Would there be any interest in re-hydrating his website if we have a way
to get the files/data? I would certainly be willing to sponsor it and
buy the domain/host in the cloud to keep it going since it is well known
and in various print references.

Thanks,

Tony, KX3H

For technical reasons, we've been using a somewhat outdated Kernel during the

along with our development team, and it was completely painless. It'll all be
history by the end of next week. A one-time reckoning.

Now that we've gotten this task out of the way, all future upgrades should go
very smoothly. In the vast majority of cases only the application code will be
updated.

And don't worry: as a user of the K4, you won't have to even think about linux

Hi Bill,

Hopefully Elecraft will be speedy with updates, I am sure they will be,
as they have a superb history of support,

The security aspect was my concern-- freezing the OS is bad, and I doubt
they will do that.

This however now brings up the question of what happens if Elecraft goes
out of business. Hopefully not, but it has to be looked at...

They could then Open Source the code for the rig at that point... Maybe
put the source in escrow now, against that eventuality, and keep the
escrow updated with current code...

I have a problem with my K3s 100w PA: No power above 12w, and receive
signals are down 20 dB. I sent an email to "K3support" a week ago and
haven't received a reply. Is that email address still valid? So, I
resent the email to "support" yesterday -- no response. Has Elecraft
stopped supporting the K3?

To make matters worst, I downloaded the K3s Schematics, and the KPA3A
schematics (Rev C4?) do not match my Rev E PCB. This sure make
troubleshooting a challenge.

I have a fairly large investment in Elecraft equipment, in large part
due to their past excellent support. Do I need to rethink this?

fan kicks into high gear and is very noisy, but still within specs.

gotten much better in dynamic range and lowered MDS in general and
Elecraft rates near the top of the heap.

The AGC in the K2 and K1 (and K3/K3S) can handle the strong signals with
no problem.  It is not much different than reports of performance during
a contest where there are strong signals and weaker signals.

If we have a strong sunspot cycle, the weak signals will get stronger

Good afternoon K3 folks,

I am new to this list and honored to be accepted.

Recently my K3 has experienced a couple of issues. I have been unable to get
a response from Elecraft e-mail or telephone service regarding the
situation. It's been almost two weeks now so thought I'd ask here if anyone
has some suggestions for me to try myself.

Here is the main concern:

When getting ready for CQWWDX SSB a few weeks ago, I went through setting
the transmit power on each band to drive an amplifier properly. The power
display seemed a bit sluggish and had a delay in indicating the SWR. Worse
yet, when I got to 40M, I could not crank the power up past about 30 watts;
it would momentarily display a higher number but then fall back to 30w. All
other bands cold be set higher.

First I reloaded all the current firmware in the main and subreceiver. No
change to 40M.

So next I went to the K3 Utility ver 1.20.1.15 to do a transmitter gain
calibration. Starting with the 5W calibration, it stepped thru the first few
bands OK but then stopped (I think on 40M) and displayed "ERR TXG" and the
message "calibration settled at 3.6W, TX gain failed because transmit power
did not reach the expected value".

In anticipation of having to send the radio to Elecraft where it might be
totally reset, I manually started recording all the configuration settings.
When I looked at my filter settings, I was shocked to see that filter 1 in
the subreceiver was set to 1.35. Huh? It should have been 2.80 !! Was my
config info corrupted? I reset that to 2.80 and then for the heck of it
tried again to set the power on 40M. That now worked "OK" and the swr and
pwr display during "tune" showed instantly on all bands. Something had
changed.

Next, I decided to rerun the TX calibration gain routine. This time if
successfully completed the 5w and 50w routines. However, with a good dummy
load, 40M displays an swr of 1.4, while the other bands are 1.0 or 1.1, so
something is still a little funny on 40M. What might that be?

I have now been considering doing a total reset of the radio using the EE
INIT function and then the self calibrations. Is this wise?

Any experiences or suggestions appreciated.

73,
Chet, N8RA

this, but Winlink is basically a 1990s era Email application and is
susceptible to issues like this.

There are numerous articles on how to deal with it. Some that want to

you an app to fix it, some that tell you how to fix it yourself (i.e.: The
Windows Club website). Select the one that best matches your comfort

level.

Worst case scenario, you fix it manually after every Windows update. But

at

least you are aware of what needs fixing, and how to do it.

In most cases, you need to go into the Soundcard settings for the Mode you
have selected (i.e.: Vara HF Winlink) and change the input and output
devices to USB Audio Codec.

Are you participating in the Red Cross drill next Saturday?

All used to work, and all of a sudden PTT fails. All else works, the

Re: [Elecraft] [Elecraft-K3] Winlink

2020-11-08 Thread Dave Cole

Hi Lyn,

First off, THANK YOU for the help!! I must have been unclear in my
first post...

I was using Winlink Winmore, and it does drive the radio to different
frequencies, the radio control is partially working... It also used to
work 100%...

I am presented with a COM port, not a USB selection, (Winmore, or Vara),
when in the RADIO SETTINGS within the program, nothing to do with USB...

I was not aware there was a Red Cross drill was coming up. I keep
Winlink around in the event of an emergency, it would be nice to be able
to get out an email or two in that event.

My Winlink setup is based on my desktop machine, (not mobile in any
way), which is Windows 10. It has worked in the past with zero issues
across multiple updates...

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500: Fails to tune, and shows 3:1 on good antenna on 18 MHz.

2020-09-14 Thread Dave Cole

Hi ken,
Added the dummy, no problems, so it is the antenna... Also, given it is
a 6BTV with the 18 meter add on, and all other bands work, it is not the
feedline...

This makes it simple to fix! It is either a break with the laws of
physics as we understand them today-- or a connection has come loose.
Given there are only two connections... I suspect it will be a simple fix.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500: Fails to tune, and shows 3:1 on good antenna on 18 MHz.

2020-09-13 Thread Dave Cole
That helps triage the issue... Something in my antenna must have gone
wonky... I am using a 6BTV, with the 18 Meter add on kit, so the same
feedpoint is used for all bands, and they are fine... I was worried it
was the tuner. I'll go check the antenna out tonight, and in the
morning as well... THANK YOU! Knowing the tuner is bypassed in Bypass,
helps... Next is to put a dummy load on the tuner...

Hello,
My KAT500 which worked yesterday, now shows a 3:1 on 18 MHz., only. Antenna is
a single feedline to a 6BTV, and an analyzer says all is good at low power. At
100 watts, all seems good.

All other bands seem OK at high power.

Question: When in bypass, is the entire tuner bypassed?
Question: When turned off is the tuner bypassed? Which antenna is default?

It's fun to see you and a few other brains here keep some of the "myths"

As Jim moved to California from Chicago he scooped up my TenTec Titan to
start his "Titan" collection. Jim & I go back to the audio business in

Have you been able to get home yet? What's the status of your home and
antennas?

Got back a few days ago, only damage is to floor under refrigerator
that had been without power for 3 wks. House, shack, antennas all
fine. No power, water, or internet, so we're in a rental townhouse for
a while.

We are getting ready to move... One of the processes I intend on
performing on any new site is described at:

was a horrendous scratchy buzz that ran at least S9+30.  When I went
outside to look around I could see why.  Malaysia gets a lot of rain,
things are wet much of the time, and back then (at least 30 years ago)
many of the electrical insulators on the overhead power lines were dirty
with pollution.  I could see constant arcing across dozens of insulators.

I'm retired now and live on a reasonably quiet semi-rural hillside, and
!sometimes! on a quiet evening my QRN level on 160m is down below S2

Well, here's the flip side. My old qth was noisy enough, but the real
eye-opener came when I toted my KX3 to Hyderabad, India a few years
ago. I

was teaching at the Indian School of Business and living in the faculty
apartments, and I had brought the KX3 along expecting to hear a bunch of
call-signs that would sound exotic to a midwestern Yank. So I strung up a
wire around the walls of my living room, up near the ceiling, and laid a
counterpoise out along the floor. Donning my headphones I switched it on,
looking forward to an evening of entertainment as I tuned 20 CW.
Zowie! What a cacophony of squeals, buzzes, crashes, honks and toots,
burps, whistles and grinds. The S-meter jumped up to about S9+10 and
stuck

there. Nowhere on the band, it seemed, was there a slot wide enough for a
signal to peep through. Finally I was able to discern a little peep
half-buried beneath the layers of trash, a lonely VU2 calling CQ. I
answered him, but of course to no avail. On a later night I heard a few
words from a QSO between a local ham and a VR2 in Hong Kong, and that was
the sum total of my ham experience while there. Where were the noises
coming from? I dunno -- from everywhere, it sounded like.

I have a 22 db noise floor change here when power fails... If the pot

Power was shut off to my noisy urban neighborhood yesterday while crews
replaced a power pole. For a long time, I have wanted to check my HF noise
floor when the power is out, and yesterday was my chance. For days like this
is why my station is solar-powered!

I expected to be surprised but I was absolutely blown away by what I heard. The
40 meter noise floor was at least *17 dB* lower than normal. I could hear
layers and layers of signals that I never knew were there. Nets I never knew
existed… I mean, have you heard of the Montana Sheepherders net, for pity’s
sake? A midday 40 m pileup on a SOTA QRP CW station in Texas that I never would
have had a prayer of hearing normally. The noise was so low that I could hear
way, way down into the intermod of SSB signals—and most of them were quite
yucky. I heard birdies and crud from washing machines from what must have been
three blocks away. I heard the 7150 kHz 5th harmonic of a local AM station. By
measurement on the P3, I confirmed that all of these signals would have been
completely under my usual noise floor.

On 20, it was so quiet I almost believed that the K3’s receiver had failed. WWV
was coming in at a 56 dB signal-to-noise ratio.

Interestingly, 80 meters was also quieter, but not by as much. I’m not
complaining about nearly 10 dB less noise, but it’s too bad that power was
turned on before dark, before I could really evaluate the conditions.

When it gets this quiet, there are no ticks, crashes or noise transients of any
kind... just a gentle rushing sound, so it ‘feels’ even quieter than it is. It
was every bit as quiet as a forest Field Day a hundred miles from civilization.
Yes, radio was amazing yesterday for six glorious hours.

Ahh.  Well then, I'd bet quite a lot of money that 95+% of that

your trash bin.  You'll never even see it.
