RE: [Elecraft] K3--Trouble with Power Pole connectors

2008-04-29 Thread Eric Fairbank

Iv'e been getting away from using Anderson Powerpole connectors and now relying
on Tyco Electronics/AMP Power Lock Connectors. Essentially the same thing, but
much higher quality. They will mate with the Anderson line so no problem there.
A lot of people have complained at how easily the powerpoles come apart. I did
some testing and found that it takes about 3 lbs of force to pull two
powerpoles apart, while it takes 8 lbs for the AMP connectors. With an AMP
mated to Anderson, it takes 6 lbs. With the AMP connectors, it takes
considerably more force to mate them and there is a distinct snap/click sound
when they go together. The pins are thicker and they have wings on them so
they don't flop around in the housing like the Anderson ones do. Also, they
don't require a roll pin to lock them together. There is a little tab on the
housing that locks one half of the connector to the other. They do cost more
but your getting a higher quality product in my
opinion. Anyway, for those of you that have an issue with the way Anderson's
lock together, you might want to give these a try. I get mine from Mouser.

 Excellent question, Bob!!

You caused me to check. I have several APP cables about, to
 I hooked two of
them together and added weights to one while lifting with
 the other until
 they separated.

My test pair separated at 1.2 kg or just over 2.6 lbs. I
 consider that
substantial force needed to separate them. I've never
 had a pair fall apart
without tugging on them with what I considered pretty
 strong force.

Clearly, something different is going on with yours or are
 you are much
 stronger than I.

RE: [Elecraft] simple iambic paddles

2008-04-25 Thread Eric Fairbank
Not sure what you mean by that. These paddles work just like my other dual
lever paddles. The term iambic paddle is really a misnomer. Iambic refer's to
the keyer, not the paddles.

A small variation in the center contact and you'd have
 Iambic paddles.

 What an elegant design!

Failure to zero-beat when answering a call. This is one that many veteran's
also fail on. Once you get the hang of it, you can easily and quickly get
within 10 cycles of the other station.

Does anyone have a design for a very simple iambic key that can be made
with simple materials and hand tools? The kids are starting to send CW
and I am finding they are having a LOT of trouble with a straight key.
Most immediately gravitate to the bencher so I am trying to find a way
to make a $5 paddle.

2008-04-24 Thread Eric Fairbank

It's easy to adjust and I do use it often. It really does work well. I use it
no problem up to 30wpm. I drilled four holes the size of a quarter in the
bottom of it and put lead in them so it's nice and stable on it's rubber feet.

 Hi Eric,

Wow! Simple yet beautiful! I wonder if it was
 difficult to adjust and
then to secure the position of the screws securing the two
 paddles? Also,
have you used it very much? (My guess is the Brian's
 kids will be operating
 at less the 10 WPM.)

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Keyer anomaly/Learning the code

2008-03-23 Thread Eric Fairbank

I have noticed the very same thing in my new K3
which Iv'e had for just a few weeks. It happens
frequently and I find it rather annoying. Guess I'll
have to go back to the external keyer. Don't know if
it matters, but I run full QSK all the time. I run
25-30wpm so it may be less noticeable at slower
speeds. I'd be very interested if others have
experienced the same thing with the K3.

 in no way a problem,
I'm just curious if anyone else notices it.

Well, now I see that Mouser sells two different
kinds of these AMP/Tyco connectors. The ones that I am
refering to are the AMP Power Lock Series I connectors
on page 1285 of the latest Mouser catalog. I think
this thread is refering to the other ones on page 1284
that are more similar to the Anderson ones. I have not
used those and cannot verify that they are inferior to
the Anderson's.
