[Elecraft] N1MM CW issue

2015-12-04 Thread Fausto Coletti
Hi all,

I noticed a problem with N1MM + in CW.
When I select a speed higher than 28-30wpm, the weighing between points and
lines changes and,
at 40wpm the transmitted message becomes incomprehensible.
Any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] K3: 630m amplifiers

2015-07-27 Thread Fausto Coletti

Hi Alan,

In fact, the spectrogram that I posted shows strong key clicks of Class D
amplifier on the signal to 472.1 kHz.
Also the linear amplifier at 472.5 KHz in the spectrogram shows key clicks
but lower.
On the other hand you can see that my signal at 473.3 is very clean without
key clicks.
Many hams have asked me how it is possible that with a switching amplifier
there are no key clicks.
The answer is that I have taken a different approach by the schemes that are
on web and the result

you can see yourself.
It is very important to dampen all transients during switching from
interdiction to conduction and vice versa.

I had to work a lot but at the end I got a very clean TX.

Hi Fausto,

The term class D can mean many different things. As long as a class-D
amplifier uses some means to preserve the modulation envelope (the shape
of the amplitude) then it would work fine for CW. But if the input CW
signal is hard-limited then the wave shaping will be lost and key clicks
will result.

It's not an issue for FSK digital modes, because the amplitude is
constant, so hard-limiting has no effect. But CW is actually a form of
amplitude modulation so it needs a linear amplifier.

CW would be another mode that would not need a linear amp I think.

No, CW requires a linear amplifier. CW is not constant-amplitude -
the amplitude changes every time you open or close the key. A class-C
amplifier would mess up the key shaping, causing key clicks.

Any true FSK or MSK signal should not be bothered by a non-linear
amplifier. The only caveat I can think of is that the amplitude of an
AFSK signal may have some ripple on it to the extent that the passband
of the transmit crystal filter is not flat. But I doubt that's a
significant issue.

I tried the same thing on the bench with an old K3 with original synth
boards (no stiffeners) that I was upgrading. The new synth boards went in
just fine and I inserted a test signal at 28.0150 at 0dBm, 1 milliwatt. I
then tuned 1 kHz away and watched the noise floor drop to S1, so that I
could hear a -130 dBm signal just fine only 1 kHz away at 28.0161. I also
had the 400 Hz 8 pole filter engaged, but my eyes bugged out at the
performance. If there was any reciprical mixing, the band would have been
filled with broadband noise. I used to use the old Kenwood radios back in
the 80's (TS-820S and TS-830) They had all sorts of LO noise and croaked
badly with about an 80 dB range as I recall. A strong signal would fill up
the band for over 100 kHz either side with reciprical mixing noise. I am
seeing a radio that is about 50 dB better than that. I replaced the
Kenwoods with Ten Tec OMNI Vs and saw a huge improvement, but nothing like
what I am seeing with the new K3 synthesizer. Receivers can be so good now
that the real problem is transmitted junk from other radios and not front
end deficiencies in your radio.

Hi,
just done some tests with K3 and KSYN3A and result are amazing,
(it is not a scientific test in Sherwood stile, but say enough):

it is a P3 schreenshot as proof of incredible strong signal handling of
K3

with new KSYN3A board:
/P3 freq. span is 5 kHz,
red band is signal 59+60dB, centered on 7.134 MHz,
K3 is on SSB mode, filter BW2.4kHz center weighted (normalized - green
band)

- on 7.134 MHz,
in filter BW is SSB signal clearly and laud herd./

This all, remind me on video from IC7851 vs IC7800 RMDR characteristics,
with strong signal and week one ,300 Hz offset( search for Icom IC-7851
vs

IC-7800 RMDR Characteristics on YouTube)

Please can we have an option to disable break in. I nearly killed my

[Elecraft] K144xv power output

2013-08-23 Thread Fausto Coletti
Hi all,

I should reduce the output power of the K144XV to a level of less than 1 Watt.
I need this because I use the 144 MHz band to drive my microwave transverter.
I tried to adjust the parameter config XV1 PWR to the value L .01 but the
output power does not drop below 3 W.
Then I thought of two possible solutions:

1) insert an attenuator on the cable IF IN of the K144XV
2)try adjusting the trimmer R87 on the K144XV

Which is the best solution?

[Elecraft] K144XV

2013-05-18 Thread Fausto Coletti
Today I installed the module K144XV. It all works ok but I noticed several
spurious signals received, in particular each 12.5 kHz at a level
of around -140 dbm indicated on P3, plus some pretty strong signals such as at
144.4165 to S7 and others.
Obviously signals are present with the antenna disconnected and with a 50 Ohm
load on the antenna connector.
I exclude the origin from the outside of the transceiver, I disconnected all
possible noise sources such as switching power supplies and similar.
It 's normal or there may be a problem? Any suggestions?

That sounds like a P3 cable problem. There have been reports of
faulty BNC cables supplied in a batch that was bad from the supplier.

Try contacting Elecraft and describe the problem to them.

Also while you are waiting to call Elecraft over the week-end, make
sure that ALL of the cable routing is as it was before the
installation. That covers any existing cables you may have moved
around.

Good luck,

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 preamp sufficient for K9AY?

2011-11-19 Thread Fausto Coletti
Try unplugging and replugging the antenna from the receiver,
if you notice an increase in noise you do not need to further amplify
the signal. A further amplification worsens the dynamic of the receiver.
Only if you're lucky and live in a little noisy QTH you need a preamplifier
at K9AY antenna or if you have a high lossy coax between the antenna and
the receiver.

I'm considering adding a K9AY antenna for 160m and 80m. For those of you

 another preamp required?

My K9AY would be no more than 100ft of coax away so I wouldn't expect a
