Re: [Elecraft] K3 with KSYN3A 100Hz spurious
At one time my old K3 with 2nd RX had a 20KHz+ wide signal on 80m, which generated lots of "attention" since there were two dxpeditions close by and some blamed me for not getting ATNO. Got a "nice" screenshot from a Flex. Receive was OK. I asked the Elecraft support for some ideas and there was not a clear answer. I tested the radio afterwards with an SDR. The bandwidth was getting smaller and then everything was normal. Not sure what has happened. It must have been the transmit path somehow influencing the synthesizer (KSYN3). Re: [Elecraft] KPA 1500 efficiency
This is normal from theory. Input power increase as I*U. Output power increases as I*I*R. So at half input power one quarter output power. At 1/4 input power 1/16 output power. Two ways around, none implemented in KPA1500. Change transformer windings like in KX3, which is harder to do at high power. Lower the voltage as in Expert amps. In old times, my 20A power supply to a 100W rig broke. I only had 5 A supply. Was good for 5W. But after adjusting with tuner for a max power, the output was 25 W. The tuner acted like a transformer. I never had a failure with Li-Ion batteries bought from batteryspace.com. They are connected externally to KX3 and charged by an AC charger. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 battery upgrade?
LiFePO3 can be as heavy as KX3 and defeats the purpose of KX3 if weight is concerned. I use 4S2P Lithium Ion. Like: https://www.batteryspace.com/li-ion-18650-battery-14-8v-5-2ah-77wh-2x4s-s-rechargeable-battery-pack-6-24.aspx Since it has 16.8V peak, I charge it via a diode for 16V. A diode internal to KX3 makes it 15.4 V max and thsi is what the internal meter in KX3 shows. This is 12% over 13.8 V. Lasts a long time. Full power up to 15W. No problem in > 5 years. Re: [Elecraft] Why predistortion ?
Many factors influence how wide the signal is in SSB, not just IMD3 numbers. These are: 1. Quality of ALC. Here K3 is excellent. FT in class A poor. 2. Overdriving the amp. Operators choice or ignorance. 3. Transmit bandwidth. Could be 300-2400 in contests. No adjustment in K3 except by crude EQ. 4. Amount of speech processing. 5. Equalization. Following W2XJ, the future is in the amp containing the complete TX stream. Perhaps only 3 stages, with DAC following by LNA directly driving the LDMOS finals, with bandpass and final filters. All what K4 (or K5 ) does, it to send relevant info to TX via Ethernet. Even better, have all in one box (K5_1500X). Probably the hardware cost is minimal. Nearly all the cost is in software dev't. At 500 watts it reaches 70C in about the > same time... > > Can I assume the amp is not the most efficient thing in the world at 200 > watts? Correct! Up to a certain limit, the output power increases with PA current quadratically. So the maximum dissipation may be below the max power, and decreasing power does not reduce dissipation much. Assume that at 600W KPA500 operates at 60% efficiency. 1000W total, 400W dissipation. Now reduced the power to 1/4 or 150W. The input current is reduced 50% to 500W. The dissipation is 350W, not much below 400W at full power. With KAP500, the dissipation at low power can actually get worse than predicted since the power supply is unregulated and has higher voltage at lower current. Reduction of dissipation at low power can be done at least 2 ways. One is reduction of voltage as done in SPE amps. The other one is changing the the transformation ratio of output amp, e.g., in KX3; hard to do at high power. One can have the action of a different transformation ratio with a manual tuner. Once my 20A power supply died but I had a 5A supply available. But the max power was only 5W before the power supply switched off. 1/4 curent = 1/16 power. By adjusting a manual tuner for max output I got 20W. But KPA may not let this trick go because of SWR. protection. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Tuner Question for the Group
MFJ-998 seems to tune anything. I am always trembling that it will smoke, but for 5 years, no smoke. Even matching 80m dipole (fed by ladderline) on 40m. It has 2 outputs and keeps matches in memory. Getting it to tune at frequency previously tuned takes a fraction of a second. If both antennas were used at same frequency, tuning for one antenna automatically brings tune in the second. Very convenient for A/B comparisons. The tuner displays L, C and SWR. Re: [Elecraft] 75 ohm coax
The plus of RG6 is low price, less than 10c a foot. In receive applications, they seem to be lasting forever. In transmit too but small nuisances are necessity to use a tuner for low SWR antennas and nonstandard connectors. But running two in parallel does not make any sense. Half a year ago I found Rg6's 50 Ohm equivalent on ebay. Altelix AX240 for $99/1000ft. Measured parameters same as LMR240. The plus of cheap and good 1000-ft roll (with crimp connectors that can be attached in 30 sec) is that the coax can be cut as needed, with no worries about cost. [Elecraft] 20 KHz wide signal in K3 on CW
A while ago, one station in a contest had a 20 KHz wide signal. I send him email and he replied that he had K3. Yesterday I was calling D2EB on 3521 and got lots of angry reports about my signal jamming everything around. One station sent a panadapter screen. There are spurs about every 700 Hz. The first one is -15db from the main signal, the second -25db, and 3 KHz away it is -35 db. I checked the radio later with a SDR. It had spurs but not as big. I checked the radio today, and the spurs seem almost gone. My K3 is #2283. Re: [Elecraft] Full Break-In (QSK)
With TX/RX switching and DSP, K3 can do only so much. For K3 with 2nd RX, perhaps a new firmware can add a trick from Flex 6600. While basic QSK in Flex is slow due to DSP delays, it is very good if 2nd rx is used for receiving in duplex mode. All what is needed is to mute 2nd rx during transmitting and switch ANT to 2nd rx after that. It may be too much programming for Elecraft, though. The correlations between passionate writing and useful content is close to zero if not negative. Due to poor conditions the bands are empty. What you could do with 5W and some wire a few years ago now requires a KW with a beam. Many hams especially in noisy neighborhoods with simple antennas have trouble making contacts and become discouraged. But they can hear a station with a KW and a beam, and they overjoy when they make a contact. The original poster has a foundational license in Australia with, I think, 10W limit. Re: [Elecraft] SWR - does it matter?
Assuming that the correct load is 50 Ohms, load with SWR of 1.5:1 could be 33 Ohm or 75 Ohm. Or something more complex. The load of 33 Ohm would cause bigger dissipation and the load of 75 Ohm less dissipation but also less power. Three options here. First, spend hrs/days optimizing your antennas. Second, use antenna tuner. Third, accept inefficiencies. Personally, I would not consider a solid-state amp without a built-in tuner. Re: [Elecraft] Tinnitus and the K3 RX EQ and Related Variables
I used to have a dual channel 15-band equalizer. It could quickly compensate for deficiencies in my ear and signals. Compared to software equalizers, you can manipulate them rapidly for max readability. Many times a difficult copy became an easy copy. However, the equalizer was susceptible to RFI, had some background noise and it took lots of space. Now I use RX EQ in K3. Good but not as good as the manual equalizer. Re: [Elecraft] Why are the batteries internal to the KX3?
NiMH batteries inside do not leak and they are useful if KX3 is used for something quick, e.g., identification of RFI. They are also good for backup if an external battery is depleted. If someone is really smart, one can try to remove the inside battery holder and substitute 3 Li-Ion flat polymer cells in place, like: https://www.batteryspace.com/1-2cratepolymerli-ioncellspacks.aspx They will need some external connection for charging. I use to have such batteries inside K2. Light, fast-charging, and never a sign of trouble. At 1500W my Expert 2k-FA reports 50-52A at 49 V. About 55A at 1800W. The Expert saturates at 2 KW. You may check out the SWR with a reputable meter. Often multiple meters show different values on different frequencies. For instance at my station LP100 shows 1.4:1, 2k-fa shows 1.2:1, and K3 shows 1.8:1. But no problem in the end. Re: [Elecraft] K2 still a viable portable contest station?
The challenge in the phone contest at 100W with compromise antennas is being heard. This depend on the quality of speech processor and microphone or equalization. The difference between excellent and not so speech processor can easily be 1-2S. K3 has an excellent speech processor with equalization. K2 has compressor and sounds OK but not dramatic with good microphone. IMHO KX3 processor is not too efficient and even below K2. But KX3 has an equalizer allowing any mic to sound good. For portable radios, the best procesor seems to be in FT-891. A good contesting combo if one can afford it is KX3 driving Expert 1.3k for > 1 KW. Re: [Elecraft] Non-Resonant Antennas and Chokes
You have several choices. 1. Add voltage or current balun at tuner output. Voltage 4:1 is simpler. 2. Connect the ladder line directly but loop the coax by the tuner a few times around a large toroid. This is equivalent to adding a balun. Do not ground the tuner. The first option guarantees balance but may add some losses. The second one is trivial to do. Most likely you will not be able to tell a difference. I used to have 70ft dipole at 25 ft fed with ladderline all the way to the shack. Matched by MFJ-962C, which had internal balun. Never a problem with up to 500W and even worked coast to coast on 160m! Re: [Elecraft] Less Than Perfect Antennas
I used about 90 ft of wire 20 ft up and 2 20 ft sloping radials, all connected to K2 directly. I was able to work many stations on 80m SSB in a 200 mile radius. All wire "concoctions" can be treated as a dipole but not necessarily fed in the middle. So they are likely 1) very inefficient when fed by coax 2) require a balun because of off-center feeding especially if the radio is not battery operated, 3) are not good for DX unless they are high enough, and 4) they may be directional where they are > 1/2 wave because of strong lobes. It had a number of small problems but no problems with relays/caps/inductors. When everything is set up well, it recalls old setting in a fraction of a second. It has output for 2 antennas. Re: [Elecraft] PROPOSAL: K2/10 Battery LiPO / 8AA carrier option
This battery has very high current potential but does not have a limiting board. You can connect it to K2 via a resettable 3A fuse. But I would choose Li-Ion something with less max current and PCB board for safety and reliability. Like: https://www.batteryspace.com/li-ion-18650-battery-11-1v-2-6ah-28-86wh-4-2a-rate-3s-s-battery-module---un38-3-passed-ndgr.aspx For many years I used 3S1 combination using flat cells inside my K2. It was charged at 12.8V with 1 A limit and the connection to K2 was by a resettable fuse. Keeps > 11V for about half the charge. Never a problem despite travelling across all continents. Very light. But I was always afraid that something would short causing trouble. With batteries with PCB for limits, the risk is far lower. Re: [Elecraft] Looking at KPA1500
The low range tuners up to 3:1 are very low loss and then can be made reliable. High range tuner for 1.5KW would be less so. You may buy MFJ-998 as an extra. I use MFJ-998 with 1.5 KW and a ladderline-fed dipole for a few years. Only small problems like burnt diode in SWR circuit or smoked capacitor by the output connector. But it is better to have such problems outside of the amp. Another choice is to have an AB switch where the same antenna is connected to A directly and to B via capacitor that lowers the SWR where otherwise it is too high. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Efficiency As A Function of Input Power
The theory states that Power in = U I Power out ~ I*I*r So power-in is linear with current. Power-out is quadratic with current. Driving hard helps efficiency but hurts linearity. Max efficiency with LDMOS is about 60% with reasonable linearity and no feedback, but could be > 70% with predistortion. Higher efficiency can be obtained in class C for CW/RTTY however wideband SS designs are not suitable for class C. For low efficiency at lower power the best approach is to reduce the supply voltage. SPE gives a choice of 25V (1/3 power), 35V (half power) and 48V (full power). New 4O3A (Flex) amplifier is supposed to adjust supply voltage automatically for highest efficiency at a given power. Another choice is to use an external tuner for max power, not low SWR, as e.g. at 1/4 power the optimum output impedance is 200 Ohms not 50 Ohms. Elecraft is using a trick in KX3 where at > 12 V and 5 W another ratio is used in the final transformer, reducing power input by almost one half. Re: [Elecraft] BNC connector oddity on KX3
I use many BNC connectors, some at KW level, and nearly all of them are good. But occasionally some do not make a good contact and need to be thrown away ASAP. The best way to check is to try another cable. Recently I bought a large number of cheap RG-58 cables with BNC connectors from showmecables.com. The cables turned out to be 60 Ohm and many connectors are poor. I like cables at hamfests from old professional equipment. If cost is not but weight is an issue, lithium AA work well. I expect that you get at least 10 hrs receive. They do not leak. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU - ability to handle more than two antennas
Microham Station Master listens to K3 traffic, decodes frequency and sets switches as programmed. This is regardless whether the amp or computer are on. Also very reliable unit. Can also be used for as rotator controller. I cannot praise it enough. I have Expert 2k-fa and it is a love-hate relationships. On one hand, 2 input and 6 outputs with a reasonable antenna tuner. I switch bands and antennas, and no extra work. On the other hand, it failed 4 times, the PS supply creates RFI (fixed partially by a large toroid), and it is pretty loud., requiring headsets all the time. Also, ability to control antennas outside of front panel (or an unreliable app) is variable under Flex only (DDUTIL). Expert 1.3k-fa has RFI quiet PS and is very light. Its back fans are quiet but the one insides is annoyingly loud - apparently fixed in newer models. Also only 4 antenna outputs. But it was brilliant working with KX3 as CE0Y/NO9E. So I am looking for an Expert replacement -quiet both acoustically and RFI, as automatic and with good CAT. Perhaps KPA1500-2 will be it. If there are only two antennas per band, perhaps this is doable with dual-input antenna switch (like DXE-RR2X8B) and Microham StationMaster. For each band, MH SM selects one antenna for A and another one for B. To change an antenna within a band, select A or B in the amp or via CAT. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU - ability to handle more than two antennas
Multiple (4 to 6) antenna connectors is a nice feature of Expert amps. Once you have antenna matched, QSY to up to 2-3 antennas per band is automatic. The psychological effect is astounding, as trying to get SWR as close to 1:1 is becoming a waste of time. In my Expert 2k-fa I have 5 antennas connected. Having two antenna connectors is probably enough for heavy duty contesters where sophisticated antenna selection together with SO2R is done externally. However, Elecraft can provide several logical antennas software selected, with each one matched separately. They can also come with an external switch. Only 2 connectors is a reason why I am not placing the order for KPA1500. Re: [Elecraft] FA-VA4
It is cheap and accurate after OLS calibration with good loads. Attached 50 Ohm load was so so. I am using it when accurate impedance measurements are a plus, including for LC. For instance with 160m antenna, measure, prepare appropriate coil or capacitor, and the match is perfect. On the other hand, navigation is difficult with 3 buttons. Also not rain resistant. No computer connection. If absolute low cost in not an issue, RigExpert AA 55 Zoom is much easier to operate, is as accurate with OLS calibration, has tons more functionality including cable testing, and is not much bigger or heavier. Re: [Elecraft] Antenna Analyzer (FA-VA4)
The choice of analyzers is not that simple unless cheap price is the only factor. I have four analyzers: Rigexpert 230Pro, FA-VA4, VNWA3 and Mini60. Rigexpert covers up to 230 MHz and costs about $500. It is the easiest to use and has the most functionality. Less accurate because it does not have OLS calibration and is pretty big, but new models (Zoom) have calibration and are much lighter. Seems rain resistant. Coax testing for short and length is a blessing. I use it most of the time. VNWA3 covers > 1300 MHz and costs about $600 but needs a computer. Often requires multiple calibrations requiring an hr. Has two port for filters and beam testing. I use it only when nothing else works. FA-VA4 works up to 100 MHz and is very accurate after good calibration (included 50 Ohm load is not too good). Light but not the smallest. Getting things done takes many buttons. Not waterproof. Also. soldering is tricky and I wonder whether bad soldering will show up one time. I use FA-VA4 for portable measurements where accuracy is important. For instance impedance of inv L on 160m. Measure impedance, prepare appropriate coil, and no extra fine tuning needed. Also very useful to measure properties of toroids across frequency. I also have mini60 that works up to 60 MHz, is very small, can be charged via USB, and interfaces with Android phone, and costs $100. SWR accuracy is good but X is not. I leave it for travel. -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Field Ant. for 80/40/30
I tested the endfed from myantennas at 1 kw. The transformer was only warm so no significant losses there. The feeder was RF hot so a toroid choke was added. Cable no longer hot and toroid cold. SWR low on many bands. So the only significant losses could have been through the ground. This is obvious after a bit of thought. A vertical or inv L ( or low inv V) needs either good ground or lots of radials for small ground losses. With endfed, there is one radial, the feeder. So excellent performance by the beach, not bad in good ground, so so in poor ground. Ignacy On Nov 21, 2017 7:58 PM, "Erik Basilier" <ebasil...@cox.net> wrote: Ignacy, For an end-fed wire, I would see the possibility of power losses not only in the feed feeder, but also in the tuner, the transformer, and the effective counterpoise path. When a long counterpoise wire is needed, and when that wire is close to the ground, I would also expect ground losses from the counterpoise current interacting with the ground, in addition to the ground losses caused by the antenna wire interacting with the ground. When the feeder (outside or shield)-tuner-radio path carries all or part of the counterpoise current, I would not rule out the possibility that the possibiility that the resistance there is sufficient to cause losses significant enough to affect overall efficiency of the system. That is why I would like to compare like antennas with different feed systems. Of course antenna wire configuration is the most important thing to determine overall performance, but when putting up a long wire, I usually start with the support structure that already exists, or that I can put up most easily. 73, Erik K7TV -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Ignacy Sent: Tuesday, November 21, 2017 5:07 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Field Ant. for 80/40/30 Antenna performance does not depend on how it is fed (if feeder losses are low) but on height and ground type. How much noise from "warts" enters the antenna depends on the antenna. Close and low antenna will pick up more and high and far will pick up less or nothing. [Elecraft] K2 and KX3 with A/B switch
I am going to sell my K2 as it is gathering dust since KX3 came on board. But for probably the last time I put them on the A/B switch. Here is what I have found. 1. K2 has good speaker. KX3 has lousy speaker. Nothing strange as K2 is bigger. For comparisons I attached KX3 to an external amplified speaker. 2. A weak CW signal in K2 is natural and easy copying. You can make it sound similar in KX3 by playing PBT and sometimes engaging APF. 3. in SSB, K2 sounds nice and mellow although the bandwidth is limited. KX3 sounds tiring because of AGC pumping. I fiddled with HOLD, ATTACH, etc., with little effect. K2 has to go because it is too big. But it is a fine radio. Has anybody found AGC in KX3 harsh? The problem appeared suddenly. When KXPD3 was inserted, KX3 started sending dahs. With KXPD3 not fully screwed, keying was OK. What happened was that the two bottom pins in KX3 that mate with KXPD3 recessed, touching connections with the upper pins. Then, the ground pin became the dah pin. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 with BL2 Question
As mentioned before, the best option is ladderline attached directly to BL2 on KX3. I am using KX3 with BL1 set to 4:1 using random wires. I also use a direct BNC-banana plug connection. With the direct connection, match is obtained on many some but not all bands, and often only after second pressing of the ATU button. On some bands, touching KX3 causes SWR to rise. So impedances may be too complex for KXAT3 to match, a match may include very high losses in KXAT3, and KX3 is part of the antenna. With BL1, the match is always achieved, with antenna or without. No changing of SWR with touching. So BL1 insulates KX3 from the antenna and 1) reduces impedances to levels more easily matched by KXAT3 and 2) introduces own losses. I prefer BL1 because its better to heat the balun than the tuner. Re: [Elecraft] 14 volt batteries?
Most rigs are designed for a range (13.8V +- 15%). IMD3 are better at higher voltage, but excellent IMD3 with predistortion can make this point moot. Many computer chips operate at 1.5V, and conversion from 12V is normal. Expert amp 1.3k operates at full power from 90 to 270V. Apache 8000 has 12V/50V conversion inside. With newer generation and predistortion + more intelligent design, radios may limit themselves to max power at given voltage, all with excellent IMD and high efficiency. Say 80W at 10V to 150W at 16V. Re: [Elecraft] Is K4 talk verboten?
Perhaps it does not matter what we write because most likely Elecraft is already working on it. The advantages of K3 are high blocking and dynamic ranges together with quiet synthesizer. Also lighweight and good ergonomics to those who got used to current. Minuses are lots of connectors/cables and high price. Making all SDR would make the radio lose high blocking range. Making the screen bigger would either make the radio bigger or the number of knobs smaller. Here are possibilities - SDR configuration with 2nd RX but with provision for current RX with single Xtal filter - panadapter display with connection to external display - built in PS Ignacy, NO9E -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Is-K4-talk-verboten-tp7633604p7633637.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Camino de Santiago portable operation from Spain
That would be lots of fun. But hamming is for your own satisfaction. Walking with weight is an issue so KX2 is better. I would take wires and perhaps a small collapsible pole. E.g., a 17ft pole that collapses to 1.5 ft and weighs 4 oz. Years ago I hiked Pico de Europa in EA1 not far away from the trail and made a few CW contacts with KX1 by spreading antenna wires on rocks. KX1 is light but only 2 W. Re: [Elecraft] RX antenna protection
If a receive antenna has a preamp, there no need to do any antenna guard since the preamp cannot destroy K3. I used K9AY, K7TJR 3 el array, and a Wellbrook loop close to transmit antennas. None was turned off during transmit. Both have preamps and nothing was damaged despite running a KW. Of all 3, K7TJR was the best by far. Re: [Elecraft] KX2AT2 vs T1 Tuner?

Re: [Elecraft] KX2AT2 vs T1 Tuner?
Internal tuner is very convenient with extra pluses of remembering setting and not requiring an extra battery. But with some antenna x freq combinations, SWR is sensitive to touch and a balun is needed - an extra weight. With T1, that balun could be a few turns of jumper made of RG-174 around a toroid. Re: [Elecraft] BL2 -- Antenna Balun Usage
Just to add to one extra reply. Z readings from 259B or VA1 are inaccurate. SWR measurement is pretty good, though. BL2 balun is very good in transforming 200 to 50 or 50 to 50. It is hard to figure out exactly what is does outside the range. When BL2 is not hot, it is good enough. Whether it is hot or not depends not only on power but also on impedances to transform. I used BL1 with too short wires and the balun was hot but I was making contacts. For precision measurements buy VNA that can be calibrated. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 with KX-3/KXPA-100
If KPA1500 uses LDMOS without too much feedback, KX3 may be able to drive KPA1500 directly by removing the attenuator. Expert 1.3k-fa is sold in the US with limited gain due to FCC regulations, but individually, each one can be modified legally by removing the attenuator. With the Expert is does not invalidate the warranty. My modified Expert needs from 5 to 8 W for a KW so KX3 drives it perfectly. Each extra stage increases distortions and adds cables. So doing it directly is beneficial if it can be done. Re: [Elecraft] OT - operating QRP at same park
Looking at KX3 diagram, the signal goes trough low-pass filters and band-pass filters. Both are separate for 30-20 and 17-15 bands. So soem but probably not much attenuation from 20 to 15 and vice versa. The attenuation between 17 and 40 is likely much stronger. I assume that the front end in KX2 is same as in KX3. The bandpass filters in K3 also cover two bands but have extra caps switched in, probably for single band coverage. This would explain why K3's are not interfering much cross band. Re: [Elecraft] KX2 and Sherwood Eng. RX Performance Ranking?
I think the Sherwood ranking to KX2 means nothing unless you have a KW amp (e.g., Expert 1.3k after mods) and run it in a contest or DXpeditions. After all, nobody will hear you. Also nobody will hear your IMD3 except your next door neighbor. The biggest values of a QRP radio are: 1) convenience including good antenna tuner 2) well compressed signal on SSB if on phone If KX2 is like KX3, big yes to 1) and not much to 2). But you can always buy TT-715 and increase the punch of KX2 in SSB by 2-4 times. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver mush
I experienced the mush as well and then rode the RF gain. The problem is due to AGC reacting way too fast when in FAST. It seems that higher HLD should solve the issue but it does not. I am wondering whether HLD is applicable to AGC SLOW only? If so, the other choice is to reprogram AGC SLOW, as K2AV does. Perhaps it completely solves the problem, as Guys writes that he uses the fast AGC only during QRN. I am not sure whether AGC is mode specific as AGC slow needs to be really slower for SSB and casual operation. If AGC is not mode specific, this means reprogramming AGC SLOW before and after every contest. Re: [Elecraft] 9:1 Balun
Practical side only. Assume you use a random wire antenna. AT in K2 or KX3 will not match all bands directly. It will match with BL1 or BL2 in 4:1 mode. This is because: 1. After transformation, the impedance is more manageable to KAT2 or KXAT3. 2. Loss in balun. Mainly on lower bands with short antennas. Whenever I have space for BL1, I use it. It is no brainer as I prefer the match than no match and balun overheat than AT overheat. Heating occurs mainly at bands were the wire is too short. New transformers can have extremely low loss. A 64:1 transformer used for 40-10 or 80-10 endfeds at myantennas.com is just warm at a KW level. Re: [Elecraft] Random wire lengths for antennas
KXAT3 has trouble matching high impedance antennas. No problem matching anything using BL-1, BL-2, or any other 4:1 (or 9:1) balun although for odd impedances the balun may have substantial losses. But I prefer balun than antenna-tuner overheating. Probably all wire longer than 1/4 lambda radiate nearly all. Vertical above 5/8 lambda start generating high lobes. Horizontal add a few db because of ground reflections but also lobes. Once I made an experiment trying a vertical with a few radials, a random long wire with radials, or two random long wires as a semidipole, all fed by TV ribbon. In all cases, two random wires were the best, often by far, across bands. But setting up a portable vertical is easy, one long wire is hard, and 2 long wire is the hardest. In a nutshell, random wires are fine with exact length unimportant. If tuning problems, use a small balun.
