Re: [Elecraft] 2-30 MHz Transmit? MARS
Menu item is a great idea. Competition equipment could be modified also easily. 73, István ha4zd On 07/04/2015 20:48, Mike Morrow wrote: ...Military Amateur Radio System... ...Military Affiliate Radio System... ...Military Auxiliary Radio System... MARS has stood for *all three* of the above proposed phrases since its creation after WWII for the Army and (later) Air Force as a formal organization of military and amateur stations operating on military frequencies to handle written and phone patch traffic for military servicemen. Because an amateur license was used only as an individual's technical qualification for membership while MARS conducted none of its business on amateur frequencies, AMATEUR was changed to AFFILIATE shortly thereafter. The Navy/Marine Corps finally created its own MARS in the early 1960s. Throughout the first 25 years of MARS's existence the primary task was to serve the serviceman as one of the limited means he had to communicate rapidly with his family. That mission was last carried out to any great extent during the Vietnam war. MARS has had to create an Emergency Communications mission to justify its existence since. About a decade ago, for reasons best understood by builders of bureaucr acies, AFFILIATE was changed to AUXILIARY. MARS HF gear as yet does not need to meet NTIA specs. Once CAP was often cited along with MARS...the Civil Air Patrol operates HF/VHF nets similar to MARS, on Air Force frequencies. But about a decade ago CAP required communications equipment to meet NTIA specs...something no ham gear is going to meet. With respect to the issue of a manufacturer artficially limiting the transmit frequency coverage of its equipment to ham bands only, I find such an attitude paternalistic and condescending. It plainly conveys the attitude that the customer is too stupid to avoid improper or illegal operation of the equipment. There should be a menu item that allows either full or ham-band-only coverage. That is all. I have over several decades found full band transmit coverage to be routinely useful for test signal generation in addition to MARS work. The manufacturer should not presume to become enforcer of regulations. Re: [Elecraft] Question K3 ALC w/SPE Expert 1.3K-FA amp
ARRL may initiate changing that law. Proud hams could drive that change. With current LDMOS devices lots of money can be saved with one stage amps. That change would accelerate switching from tube amps to technically much more advanced LDMOS amps. Less energy consumption, smaller shack space required. Another question is are there more hams in USA or CB operators? 73, István ha4zd On 04/04/2015 00:01, Oliver Dröse wrote: On a deeper level, to design an amplifier with that much gain is bad design Huh? Why is that, Joe? We now have devices capable of 22 or even 30 dB of clean amplification. Why should we not use it? Just because FCC does not allow it in the U.S.? I'm not bound to FCC rules and I'd rather prefer to drive such an amp with 1 or 3 watts from the KX3 to get 1 kW out than to cascade the transceiver with a driver amp and then a final amp. Of course I'm just bound to German law which does not contain any stupid (pardon me, but it is!) amplification limits, just the maximum allowed power. I did not fix it, it just disappeared. So, here are some things I did... (1) I did all my tests with the monitor on and TX in TEST mode since that in itself showed the hum/buzz. (2) With the help of Jim Brown (K9YC) I used the TX EQualization feature of the K3 to crimp down to minimum the low frequencies of the hum/buzz. Doing this, it appeared that this was indeed a buzz and not a 60-cycle hum because the buzz did not start to be attenuated until after the 400 Hz TXEQ was set to zero and I started working on the next higher frequency band. (3) I was confused as to whether this was front mic and back end mic inputs or just front. I finally determined that this was on the front mic only with 98 percent confidence. It is not 100 percent confidence because all of my experiments to prove one way or the other were a bit scrambled but I think this was front panel mic only. (4) I then focused on the mic itself, an Elecraft MH2 hand mic. Unfortunately it was the only mic I had for the front panel but if you have more then one then I definitely suggest you test them all to see if the hum/buzz is independent of mic. (5) I jiggled and bumped this front panel mic and connector to see if there was some loose connection. Someone suggested florescent lighting as a noise generated and I tested with all lights turned off (see next point). (6) I also had a nice 13.8 Li-nanoPhosphate battery so I disconnected EVERYTHING from the K3. The only two things connected were the 13.8 volt battery on the power and the mic on the front panel. No Antenna, no ground, no other connector to the K3. Hum/Buzz was still there and in that test I also turned off the circuit breaker for all AC in my shack. Did not help. (7) After some tests, and other things, the hum just seemed to disappear and never came back since. My best guess is that it was one of the following: (1) either an external noise source that eventually turned off and my front panel mic was just more susceptible to picking it up; or, (2) the front panel mic itself had some kind of loose connection that just seemed to finally correct itself. I favor cause (1) though. I am kind of hoping it comes back so I can test some more. 73, phil, K7PEH On Jan 23, 2012, at 7:37 AM, Hunsdon Cary III wrote: Don: You know it's hard to tell the difference between a buzz and a 60 hertz hum, at least to my 66 year old ears. Alfatronix in UK does make very silent switch mode PS. This is excellent down to 500 kHz w/o any noise. I use 9A version with the K3/10. The 3A version is good only if you do not the second RX. It is acceptable on all but 160m, where it appears in about 3 places across the band, (not always the same places) The Waters and Stanton Power Mite is cheaper device and does much the same although trips off when the full 20 amps is drawn quite often.
