[Elecraft] PR6 Preamp - control connection

2014-12-26 Thread Joseph Carter
My wonderful XYL gave me the PR6 for Christmas - trying to figure out how
to connect the control wire as I have the cable to the KAT500 / KPA500
already in the ACC socket - the instructions say if the ACC is in use to
just connect the control wire to pin 11.
Anyone have an easy way to do this?
I have the Elecraft cables which are all molded so no access to the back of
the connectors.
I can't seem to find a VGA breakout box.
Thanks es 73.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 question

2014-05-07 Thread Joseph Carter
I just added the KPA500 and the KAT500 last month - first amp I've ever had but
so cannot compare but love it!
Issue for me was ability to run on 120 volts. Great fun to assemble both and as
mentioned nice compact grouping / size for my space constraints.

Exactly! The K-Line amounts to a fully automated (no tuning or knob
twisting) 500 Watt HF station. Last time I saw that was a Halicrafters
 Tornado.

I changed my entire radio desk to create more storage and shelves from the
space formerly used by a large tube amp and the large tuner I used with it.
The K3 and P3 take about the same space the previous HF rig took and the
KPA500 and KAT500 take just slightly more space than the K3 by itself. In
other words, the K-Line is extremely space efficient.

[Elecraft] K3 transmit toggle for AFSK-A

2014-02-09 Thread Joseph Carter
I usually use my K3 / P3VGA for RTTY but was playing around this weekend
trying to get use the K3 utility and Fldigi on my Mac to work - receives
fine on both but neither will trigger the transmit command - both programs
act like they are sending the text but the rig does not go into transmit.
Have tried using both the transmit button and ^T with the K3 utility and
Hamlib on Fldigi (with PTT set to hamlib command) which otherwise seems to
be exchanging commands OK.
CW works fine on the K3 utility but not on Fldigi.

Tried VOX on and off - went through the Elecraft and Fred Cady's book and
am still stumped - otherwise the Mac and the K3 seem to be talking well to
each other.
I am sure it is operator error and clearly need some help!

Thanks,

[Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500, befuddlement re: cables

2014-01-12 Thread Joseph Carter
After 45+ years as a ham I am contemplating adding an amplifier - a KPA500 and
KAT500 to complement my precious K3 and P3.
I have downloaded both manuals and it must be my age catching up with me - I am
flummoxed by trying to figure out the cables I need.
If I understand it, I will need the cable that comes with the KPA500 and the
KPAK3AUX while not necessary allows complete integration with the K3.
What confuses me is what cables I need to order with the KAT500 - I see
E850863 and E180980 cables.
Obviously, I want to just place one order and make sure I have all I need but
don't want to order anything I don't.
I seem to recall a number of issues discussed on the reflector - did a search
of the archives but still don't understand - especially about the Y cable.
Love my K3, P3, and KX3 and all I have learned from the group here.
Thanks es 73,

[Elecraft] P3SVGA advice please

2013-03-25 Thread Joseph Carter
Am thinking of adding the P3SVGA to my P3 - will need to get a new monitor too.
In reading the eham reviews etc I am wondering about what size monitor folks
might recommend.
FYI I am 63 years old and eyes still pretty good other than the small print
conspiracy.
Desk space not really an issue.
Working distance typical desk-top.
Of course typically the bigger is better was my first thought but upon
reflection perhaps that
could be overwhelming.
I appreciate the groups wisdom!
Love my K3, and KX3!

[Elecraft] K3 - getting a sub receiver - filter suggestions + dvr

2012-11-24 Thread Joseph Carter
Greeting all.
Between my birthday and Christmas my wife has OK'd the purchase of the
sub-receiver for my K3 (#6623).
I have read the recommendations by Wayne on the order site and originally
thought I would just duplicate the filters in the
main receiver (2.7, 400, 200) as I do mostly CW and Data but I do enjoy casual
SSB also.
I note form Frank Cady's book that the primary reason for having the filters
the same is diversity reception and that do not need to be the same.
Right now finances only allow 2 additional filters.
So I have been giving it some thought - would it be reasonable to put say a 1,0
filter and a 2.1 filter in the sub or perhaps match the 400 and add either a
1.0 or 2.1?
I realize that my operating style influences this - I am not a contester -
just enjoy casual operating and some DX.

The other issue would be adding the DVR - I was thinking of getting it just
because it looks like it is easiest to install it at the time of the
subreceiver addition though I am not sure how much I would use it and if I
don't get it - I can probably add one more filter.

Found Elecraft last Spring - now have K3 and KX3 and love them and this
reflector.
Thanks es 73

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SSB Net results (8/5/12)

2012-08-08 Thread Joseph Carter
Bad news / good news.
First the bad - while waiting for my KX3 I sold my other radios and
bought a K3/100 and P3 which I just love - have been trying for the
last 4 weeks to check in on Sunday but noise level here just too high!
(sigh) and bad timing for me for the CW net - will keep trying.
Good news, just received the e-mail from April and my KX3 will ship next week.
Hope to catch you all eventually.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate and have learned from this reflector.
Best,

[Elecraft] New K3!, sn 6623

2012-07-04 Thread Joseph Carter
A couple of weeks ago I posted that to keep me busy while I wait for my KX-3
(not ordered until 3/31 so I have a while yet) - I bought a K3 kit - arrived
last Friday and just finished this AM (lots of honey do's this last weekend).
What a blast putting it together and what a beauty!
So number 6623 is ready to go - now I just need to figure out all the settings,
have been reading the manual for a couple of weeks but nothing like finally
getting
to twist the knobs!
Thanks to all on the reflector for your knowledge and encouragement - see you
on the air!
