[Elecraft] K3: LPA power level accuracy?
Hi James, You're chasing your tail, me thinks ... I'm a retired career two-way radio tech and a fan of Bird meters, thought by many to be the best in their price class, and they're rated at +/- 5% of full scale ... if they're calibrated to a lab standard ... which in itself isn't likely to be much better. Even two identical elements will differ in the readings they produce. Accurate RF power measurement is difficult under the best of circumstances. I have several Birds, a Bird dummy load, a W1 and a W2 and I'm satisfied that the W1 and W2 are pretty good. Pretty good is about as good as it gets for us ordinary folks. (:-) 73! [Elecraft] APF For K3: progress report
Hi John! Welcome to the list You'll find much discussion on here ... some of interest to you and some not, but overall, a great source of information. APF refers to audio pass (or peaking) filter, a feature common on many radios, and sometimes known by other names, depending on the manufacturer. It's best represented in the FT-990 and FT-1000D, IMO. 73! [Elecraft] OT: Cost of screws
There are always hidden costs, and one best be aware of them. The supplier of the SS screws to Elecraft most likely charged Elecraft a Shipping and handling fee, and even that needs to be factored in. Even Rose's small in-home business has hidden costs! She buys shipping boxes, padded envelopes, mailing labels -and- the printer to print them, package sealing tape, plastic bags to keep the covers and cases clean, etc. Let's not forget the telephone and Internet costs, either. Oh, I forgot about the PayPal fees ... and the printer ... and the paper ... and file folders ... and the file cabinet ... and added lighting in her sewing room ... and the income tax software. The embroidery software cost just under $1500, and the total cost of her sewing machines and computers is about $14K. A trip to a west coast hamfest from the outback of Montana can easily cost $2000, and this is nothing compared to the cost of putting the Elecraft show on the road. Buying fabric stock requires a 230 mile round trip, with the accompanying vehicle costs. Even taking an order into town to the PO uses about three gallons of fuel. (;-) And, of course there's the cost of upkeep for the shipping and handling staff ... me. (:-) 73! [Elecraft] FM Filter for AM?
If this change is made, we should be prepared for complaints about Elecraft transmitters being wide, splattering, etc. The present filter imitations serve to protect some of us from both unintended and intentional excessive bandwidth. [Elecraft] OT: HexKey
Reference has been made to the spongy feel of the HexKey, and I used to agree. IMHO I'm a pretty good CW op with 60+ years behind me. Even made a living at sea with CW. I was -very- disappointed with my HexKey and was about to put it on eBay. Couldn't seem to send error- free CW and at attributed it to my old poop's arthritis. After pondering awhile and watching intently to see what I might be doing wrong, I realized that the HexKey was moving ever-so-slightly. Simply put, it was wobbling on it's soft feet. I changed the feet to ones made from firmer material and now the HexKey is great. The firmer feet cured the problem. 73! Re: [Elecraft] K2 - KAT2 Tuner and Alpha Delta DX-EE Dipole
Stan, I have one that's used for a general purpose (mostly for diversity receiving) antenna in my SO2R station. It works like what it is ... a fan dipole. It's -extremely- well made and the over-all quality is top-notch, but it's -heavy-, requiring my 150# to pull it tight, and it still sags a bit. Mine is supported with 3/8 Dacron rope, and I wouldn't want to use anything smaller. I can't imagine the nylon cord supplied with it supporting it . It does not cover 30M, but the tuners in the my K2 and K3 handle it OK. The 80M loading coils are detuned when wet or snow-covered. It isn't a nice looking antenna, if that's important to you. The neighbors -will- see it. The heavy, solid conductors need to be fussed with to even come close to being straight. Like all fan dipoles, it will need several trips up and down for adjusting the interacting adjustments. (:-) I also have an 80M Zepp fed with 2-spaced #14 open wire line that works all bands very easily and is a -lot- simpler. It's been in place for 35 years. (:-) It's fed via a 4:1 2KW HB balun. Both the antennas are between towers at the 65' level. Probably more than you wanted to know 73! [Elecraft] K3 TMP cable source
TMP connectors are used is several two-way radio product lines ... Motorola and King, at least ... probably others. I've made a number of extension TMP cables to make access to the K3's 2nd receiver antenna input easier by bringing a short extension cable to the area atop the receiver and Ty-wrapping it to the knurled brass nut. This allows me to configure the input of the 2nd receiver in different ways. I know of no cable-end female TMP connectors, but they may well exist. My source for females has been to salvage them from bad Motorola boards and adapt them for soldering onto the end of short male cables from the same bad boards. 73! [Elecraft] [K3][P3] 6m Preamp and P3 on AUX Pwr

[Elecraft] Is your P3 on the right or left?
I have just completed the first combination K3 / P3 cover (Ken's), and I'd like to know if you have your P3 on the right or left side of your K3. I would expect that because of the K3 carrying handle most will place the P3 on the right. It makes no difference in the measurements of the cover, but it becomes important if you were to order one -with- a cutout for the MIC and / or PHONES jacks. 73! Re: [Elecraft] P3 or KRX3
I added the second receiver for one reason ... monitoring six meters for openings. In fact, it has only an antenna connection on the rear of the K3 with no means to use the other methods of feeding antennas to it's input. As another poster has already pointed out, the K3 works split well, and ... for me ... using the two VFO's for working split is much easier that using the 2nd receiver. I also have just received the P3 and it's great, even though I'm not skilled with it ... yet. (:-) In summation ... unless you have a reason to listen on another band, the P3 is better spent money. [Elecraft] OT: Pin migration in Type N connectors
The pin of a UG-1185 has an obvious flange in the approximate center of the pin, and there are two TFE washers that hold them captive in the body of the connector. There are cups in the TFE washes that appear to be for surrounding the flange on the pin. They're not. The cups face -away- from the flange, and have nothing to do with positioning of the washers. They're actually a form of tuning used to keep the connector 50 ohms. 73! [Elecraft] OT: SO-239 Connector Selection
A word of caution about SO-239 / PL-259's ... In some connector applications ... particularly power dividers and other applications that are impedance- conscious ... SO-239 / PL-259 connectors are not suitable. They're -not- 50-ohm connectors. This is why one usually sees Type-N connectors used in these applications. They -are-, by definition, 50-ohm connectors. I learned this the hard way some years ago when I built and sold VHF and UHF NBS Yagis with multi-port power dividers. This may not be an issue with Brett's filters, but I'd stay with N's or BNC's. They're also, by definition, 50-ohm connectors, BTW. I've specified BNC's for all my ICE filters, and have them on my K3, watt meters, etc. 73! [Elecraft] OT: SO-239 Connector Selection
My experience with SO-239' / PL-259's -was- at VHF and UHF, and I said so in my posting. I was made aware of this when the Colorado Springs radio club ordered a 4-port divider to feed their 2M repeater's antennas and they specified / insisted on me building it with SO-239's. I shipped it and within a few days they were complaining of high SWR. Before getting the original one back I built and shipped a second unit, only to get the same report. It was only when I built the 3rd unit with N's did it work correctly. My friends at the NBS labs ... who originated NBS yagi design (W0PW / W0EYE) ... along with the particular power divider design ... explained what was going on. The non-50 ohm SO-239's connected to the 35 ohm transmission line / power divider were influencing the impedance of divider. My years at CU's radio astronomy lab and the NBS cafeteria represent some of the best learning in my career. I learned much via napkin tutoring done by some of the nation's best radio minds. 73! Thanks all for the input. I'll just run 8X jumpers from my bonding panel to the K3. - Bigger coax is unlikely to bring better shielding, -unless- it's double shielded, as in RG-214. There is a double-shileded version of RG-58 (RG-223), which would be better (flexible) in this application. Direct burial coax -must- have a non-contaminating jacket. Most MIL-spec coax does ... most RG-XX Type doesn't. Type is an industry disclaimer for any number of just like, except specifications. 73! I've previously posted that the fans in my K3 (S/N 0056) is very quiet ... silent, really ... and several have asked for the fan part number(s). [Elecraft] order of construction for k3
I found that installing the 2nd receiver ... and especially inserting the antenna cable into the TMP jack ... was much easier if the KVV3 panel is removed. In addition, I have a short (permanent) extension cable added to my 2nd receiver's antenna jack that moves that input to the area atop the receiver housing. This facilitates making changes to the choices of where the received is fed from. 73! [Elecraft] OT: The use QRP
There is a school of thought that says calling attention to the fact you're QRP when seeking contact with another station may well be counter productive. Some resent the implied expectation of special treatment, or sympathy for the poor little QRP'er, and is usually of little interest ... or even annoying ... to the guy on the other end. If you're the usual QRP'er that enjoys doing something with less, there's no need to call attention to the fact that you're QRP, and then you can take satisfaction in knowing that you made the contact without invoking some degree of sympathy and / or special treatment. Your signal report is more likely to be unbiased, too. (:-)) 73! [Elecraft] Fw: OT: Ladder Line Spacers
Hi Fred, Is that long-in-the-tooth rope something other than white? OD maybe, therefore resistant to UV degradation? Does it stretch, indicating it's actually nylon? I've seen military rope in various forms and it seems to be Dacron or similar material, but not nylon. I have some 3/8 black Dacron here holding up a heavy dipole that doesn't stretch or degrade in the sun. 73! [Elecraft] Split knob question
If someone has a split knob in hand, please look closely at the tapped hole. Since there seem to be so many knobs splitting, I'm wondering if the manufacturer has inadvertently tapped the screw holes with a taper tap and not with a bottom tap, as should be the case. There are three degrees of tap taper in common use. The bottom tap is straight and obviously produces straight threads, but it's not as easy to start straight. A set screw screwed into a hole threaded with a taper tap would force the knob apart and might be the cause of the splitting. 73!
