If Randy would like to keep the K2 the Temperature Compensated PLL Reference
Upgrade Kit (item #E850138 for $24.95) is still listed on the order form for
K2 Revision A to B Upgrade page.

The information for that mod also suggests installation of the BFO mod kit
(item BFOMDKT for $10.95) and a firmware update if the K2 has a firmware
version less than v2.0.

Those are relatively inexpensive upgrades and worth doing to improve the K2
if Randy doesn't want to go the full A/B upgrade path right away. I don't
know which would be a better investment between the K2 and the 7300 as I
know nothing about the 7300. One other thought to consider is the difference
between having a radio you can fix yourself vs. one where you have to send
it away to get fixed should something break.

Cheers!

[Elecraft] K3 - 630M band

2019-08-30 Thread Ken Roberson via Elecraft

K3 – 630M band

My first K3 a few years ago S/N number in the 1300 hundreds (Kit )has preformed

Like no other Ham xcver I had ever owned. My second K3 wasfactory built.

Both have been upgraded with mod’s to bring them up to K3sstatus.

Holding an experimental Licenses I have been operating the olderK3 on the 630M

Band for many years, the0 dbm output is enough to drive my 630M pwr amp to
100W.

For the past two weeks I have been experimenting with a newantenna for 630
meters.

The folded unipole is a winner and with a small footprint.

There is more info on my web-site.

At 14.005 MHz my KPA500, when connected to a 1.44:1 SWR load (R37, X9), had a
PA dissipation of over 500 watts when producing 400 watts RF output.  When the
load was changed to 1.30:1 (R39, X3) the PA dissipation was about 410 watts.
When the load was changed to SWR 1.07:1 (R49, X3) the PA dissipation was
reduced to under 400 watts.  (The plots are far more informative than a text
description but I can't post them here).

If you don't mind your KPA500 running hot, and are prepared to accept it
shutting down with PA DISS fault, then 1.5:1 SWR may be good enough for you.
I'd rather know the complex impedance of the antenna system load and avoid
loads that result in high PA dissipation.

Joe,

Testing propagation on 80M in the daytime is a good project.

Often I test propagation on 630M in the daytime with a shortvertical.

A “ T “ antenna would be good for your test, if you can get enoughtop loading
you

Would not need a base loading coil.

I ran 630M WSPR beacon last night , and was heard by manystations in EU.

It isn’t all that hard to tell if that’s the problem … pull the FP board, put
a little (you don’t have to soak them) DeOxit on the pins and reseat it.  Or
pull it and simply reseat it a time or two to wipe the contacts well.  Gold
pins are good long term to prevent reoccurrence in several years, but there are
other ways to skin the proverbial cat in the meantime.

I have my kit of gold pins sitting in reserve.  Put them in the amp connector
to forestall a problem that hadn't occurred.  Have yet (since 2007) to have a
need to put them on the FP board.  But tomorrow is another day. You never know

Since at greater than 50 watts, you hear relays clicking indicates that
the K3S COR is being activated.
The solution is to either move your RX antenna further from the TX

while transmitting.

I assume the RX antenna is not switching fast enough and I'm getting

 Roger,

I'm guessing you are commenting on the DX contact between VK4YM and
WG2XXM  using WSPR?
Most likely signal levels were way below noise for CW.

WSPR was designed to test propagation like a beacon and really isn't
well suited to making contacts but it does get thru with a minimum of signal.

But CW has been mainstay on 630m and likely will remain so.  It is
simple and effective requiring no computer skills.  During the period
the ARRL Experimental Group tested operating on 600m and later on
630m, QRSS was used for making longer weak-signal
contacts.  "Reading" the super-slow CW was aided by computer display.

Other digital modes have been investigated and generally work better
with weak-signals beyond the 250-300 mile limit of ground-wave.  I
suspect conversational psk-31 will get used quite a bit, where new
digital modes like FT8 will be used to make simple DX contacts with
minimal exchange of callsign and signal reports.

But CW is not dead on 630m.  Just more choices which may be more
effective.  By and large many operators in the Experimental Group
were prior ship CW operators.

630M is the new top band.

[Elecraft] K3_630M_Pwr Amp

2015-08-03 Thread Ken Roberson via Elecraft
Hello All,
My two cents, I would start with a homebrew class D pwr amp. This will get you
on CW,WSPR,JT9 and a few other digi modes. The class D switching mode FET power
amps are easy tobuild and easy to drive. This will get you started and later you
can build a class A pwr amp. Most of the narrow band modes that you will end up
using do not need classA,AB mode pwr amps.Remember the bandwidth of the 630M
band is about the sameBandwidth as two SSB signals.

[Elecraft] K3_low freq mod

2015-08-01 Thread Ken Roberson via Elecraft
Hello all,
Today I finally had time to finish the K3 low frequency mod, adding the caps
and removing the inductors from the band pass board. All went well, this is an
easy mod even for an old ham. With my calibrated ear and S meter it is
noticeable that the noise is lowerat the low end of the band (100 khz ).The NDB
were also stronger, From central Oklahoma in the daytime I amable to hear
stations in TX,OK,KS,AR,NE some as far as 500 miles.Antenna is a 60 ft 630M top
and base loaded vertical. The K3 is working very nice on the 630M experimental
band.I have been TX/RX on this band for almost two years with experimental
license WG2XXM.
Most of the time running around 5 watts ERP.The 475 khz 1mw signal coming from
the K3 is going into a HB Class D PWR AMP.Running WSPR and JT9 most of the
time.I have been off the air for a while doing another hobby with my Son (
Astrophotography ).Weather permitting I will be txing WSPR tonight.Set your
radio to 474.2 upper side band WSPR software. You will see my trace at + 1520 --
that will be 710 on the waterfall. Thanks agn Elecraft.73 Ken K5DNL/WG2XXM

Hello all,
If you have the new synthesizer board and the General RX bandpass board in your
K3
You are able to rx WSPR signals on 630 meters.I will be txing WSPR tonight ,
running 2 watts ERP , My gnd is wet so will be runninga little less power than
normal.Set your dial to 474.2 - data mode and start your WSPR program. You will
be surprised what you will hear even with a 80 M dipole.

 Hi All:

The symptom I am describing persists despite changing routers, internet

ticking sound on my transmitted signal --- faint but noticeable --- and I
could also hear it in XMIT Monitor.  I was operating my remote gear as a
test --- in the same room as the K3, and on the same LAN.

I have now set myself up 110 miles away, and the sound persists.  I am able
to work others, get good signal reports, but I can hear the tick tick tick,
 about 2 per second.

In testing, I find the sound is there even if I power down the gear --- the
radio and the control end.  It persists if I remove 12VDC from the K3/0
mini.  Also if I remove the wifi module from the RemoteRig control box.

If I remove power from the RemoteRig, it goes away.  With power to the RR,
the ticking goes away if I unplug the TTL line from the K3/0 mini.
Unplugging the other lines makes no difference, though it becomes fainter
if I unplug Aux/Mic. It persists if I remove the ethernet cable
connecting the RemoteRig to my router.  It persists if I unplug the USB
line from the RemoteRig to my PC.

This symptom appeared after a good period of time when everything worked.
And all functionality is still there --- just this maddening tick tick tick
--- like something from Edgar Allan Poe.

 All ideas gratefully accepted.
