[Elecraft] K4D USB ports
I was thinking to plug in a USB powered WiFi bridge into the back of my K4D. The unit requires 1Amp. How much 5v current can the K4 USB ports supply? I couldn't seem to find that in the documentation. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K4 and Yamaha CM-500 Mic?
When I got my K4D a month ago, I unplugged my Yamaha CM-500 mic and headphones from my K3, and plugged them into the back of my K4. I set the mic input to rear, and mic bias on. I expected the mic to perform like it had in the K3. I attempted to get 3-5 bars of ALC by turning up the mic gain control. Even with the gain up to 80, I’d have to speak *very* loudly to just get a flicker on the ALC meter. I then went back into the mic configuration and turned on the preamp (14dB). After that I could get some ALC bars with the mic gain around 65 or more. But I still had to talk much louder than I had to with the same mic on the K3. (note: mic level on the K3 was set around 7). Question: Is it reasonable to expect that I’d have to have the mic gain at such a high level - and still have to talk louder than my normal (K3) level? BTW, I can hook up the MH-4, switch to front mic, and all works smooth with mic gain around 12. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 DVR, Speakers, and feedback
I always use a headset with my K3 at home. I have the Mon level at 1 or 2 so I can hear the DVR output. As I'm preparing for Field day, I remembered last year we tried to use the DVR while running external powered speakers on the K3. Unless the Mon level was turned down to 0, we would get audio feedback (squeal) when keying the DVR for a CQ. Of course, with the Mon level set to 0, then we can't hear what the DVR is transmitting. I believe we were using the standard hand mic when this occurred. It seems like the mic must have been active when pressing a memory button for the DVR message to play. Am I missing something? Should the mic not be active when playing a DVR CQ? thanks, Oscar, WB5GCX __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] YALB
Was just thinking similar thoughts: KAT500 on top makes the k-line non-symetrical in height. Another KAT500 sized box would even it up. Re: [Elecraft] KX3-MIC COMP Setting / Metering
Well, maybe some KX3s react a bit differently. I, also, noticed the phenomenon Jim described. With the KX3, and either the MH3 or my Yamaha CM500 I couldn't seem to talk at a volume to get 5 bars ALC (or 4, or 3) by raising and lowing my voice volume level even with mic gain up near 40 (and comp set to 0). If I talked loud, I'd show 6 or 7 bars, if I decrease my voice volume a bit, I'd get no bars. As Jim described, this is very unlike my K3, where the ALC level (shown by number of bars) seems very linear, and tracks with my voice volume. With the KX3, it's more like an all or nothing meter reading. Perhaps there's some other setting not right. I still have the original firmware as shipped (serial 1130). At least on my KX3, adjusting the mic gain does not feel at all like doing the same thing on the K3 I might also note a few other factors: 1. I was able to turn the mic level way down after adjusting TX EQ bringing up the mid and high frequencies by 12db (and two lower frequency bands down by 10db). This made everything a bit better. 2. When listening to my voice with mon on, the voice volume/level DOES seem to be linear and follow the volume of my speech - it's only the ALC metering that appears not so linear. 3. Using the same CM 500 on my K3 and my KX3, with about the same TX EQ on both, people have commented the KX3 sounds like it has a lot more bass. This may not be related... Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Any good experience/recommendations with boost regulators with K3?
Bob, Not sure why you'd need a boost regulator. The K3 is one of the very few HF transceivers that specifies it will work fine down to 11v. I've used mine for years from a 12v SLA with no problems at all. Use 100AH SLA(wheelchair battery) at home (use Powergate to charge/control voltage), so most of the time K3 supply is sitting at 13.8v. However, I often unplug AC when storms are near. I often forget to plug AC back in and the K3 runs on 12v for weeks of daily nets before I notice low input voltage. (Couple of hours a day at 100 watts tx, SSB). When camping with Boy Scouts, I usually use a 26AH SLA. Never had a problem with that either. However, I usually run around 40 watts power to help conserve energy. That's usually just a weekend. If you want to be able to run another brand transceiver from battery power, then, yes, you do need the boost regulator. Elecraft rocks! I use solar panels to keep a flooded lead acid battery array charged, then run my ham stuff from that - but the battery voltage does sag lower than I'd like under transmit, dropping down to about 12.0 VDC, so I'd like to get it closer to 13.8 under load by using a boost regulator. [Elecraft] KAT500 - ...and a long wire inverted L
Although I'm not very good with antenna theory, I've enjoyed reading the discussions of where what type balun should go, or not go, etc. in the KAT500 discussions. I still don't know how I would go about connecting my current antenna to a KPA500, so I thought perhaps some of you would have some input. Here's my situation/configuration: - Due to convenant restrictions, I am limited to a long wire (about 170') in an inverted L configuration (stealth situation) - Antenna feed point and ground/radial system feed point are together and about 50' from my K3/P3 location - Currently using an SGC-230 remote antenna coupler at the antenna feed point, with good quality 50 ohm coax coming into the house This configuration is working admirably on 160 through 10 meters. My original thinking on this configuration was having the tuner/coupler at the antenna feed point would help 1) keep stray RF away from the shack, and 2) minimize any feedline loss. However, with the 230, I'm limited to about 60 watts cw, and 200 watts ssb. Obviously, no KPA500 under my Christmas tree. I initially was thinking there would be two versions of the KAT500, one model for indoor use, then another for remote/outdoor use. I could then replace the 230 with the remote KPA500 and then be free to purchase my KPA500. However, it appears a remote version of the tuner may be awhile coming. The question I keep asking myself is: Could I use the shack version of the KAT500 with my current antenna, and, if so, how would one hook everything together? Balun (1:1, 4:1, choke), or no balun? Coax, I assume would still be OK, but obviously would be higher voltages and a little power loss (but still probably OK at HF frequencies). Or, given the inverted Lhas to remain my antenna, is there still significant advantage to having the tuner at the antenna feedpoint - and I should simply wait awhile longer and see if there will be a remote version of the tuner? I love this reflector and Elecraft. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 Ports
Good summary, Jeff. I'd like to also emphasize that there are a good number of us out here with deed restriction/covenant situations that have to use a single HF antenna (175' inverted L here) with an external, outdoor tuner. We are all waiting for an external option or version of the KAT-500. In my case, I currently use the SGC-230 which limits me to about 60 watts cw, and 200 watts SSB. There's no reason for me to purchase the KPA-500 until I can replace the low power external tuner with something capable of 500+ watts. I'll continue to patiently wait. My KX-1, K3, and P3 are wonderful. I'm sure the KAT-500 will also be worth the wait. [Elecraft] KX1 Parts Question
Maybe I'm being a little paranoid, but since everything else in the instructions is SO precise, I wanted to ensure a slight part variation was intended. - L9 (4.7uH) is specified as a micro size -- the smaller size - in both the instruction text (page 31) and the parts inventory - The only 4.7uH inductor (brn-blk-brn) sent is actually a mini size - the larger size The inductor will fit on the board, but the leads will have to be bent right at the point where the lead exits the device molding - and the text indicated these inductors are very fragile. Question: Is the mini size L9 what you are sending now with some of the kits? (rather than the smaller micro size) If so, no problem -- I'll just chunk it in there and not worry. BTW, alignment and test Part I went perfectly. I haven't had so much fun in years. Great kit, great assembly manual.
