Jean,
I have two of the EA3BLQ board sets. One set has the boards assembled
and the second set is unassembled. I also have the specific connectors and
everything needed for a full installation of the boards. Since I obtained
the boards I have acquired a K3 and do not want to do any mods to my K2.
Please let me know if either set interests you. 73.

I can imagine that someone has continues his PCB art work for further K2

I do have build a ON4AEF external digital interface for my own into a second

But a friend of mine who also have a K2 and he like to build a digital

[Elecraft] : KAT100 failure

2016-09-08 Thread Behiels jean-Pierre
Hi K2 members and Don W3FPR.

Last night I do have next failure.

I was transmitting with 50 W in CW with my K2/100 with in conjunction with
my KAT100 into a perfect aligned 7 Mhz dipole (SWR1/1)

Before starting I always do a tune with my K2 we never no the SWR is bad hi.

The SWR indication on the KAT100 was outstanding 1/1,what I suspect because
I now the SWR of my antenne already was 1/1 !

After transmitting a while (5 minutes or so) the KAT100 SWR indication was
in the red zone,I stop transmitting immediately.

My RX level was dropping down to a zero level, propably a interruption in the
ANT1 connection of my KAT100.

I do change by means of the K2 command on the frontpanel to ANT2 connection
and back to ANT1 connection.

Nothing happens to help the failure yet, same failure no RX on ANT1
connection ?

I do disconnect the KAT 100 unit and remove the power supply of the K2 and
his KAT 100.

After all (toggling with the relays ???) I can receive again on both ANT1
and 2 but I do have the correct impression that the receive level

on the ANT1 connection has been attenuated since I do hat this failure last
night !

There is still a failure now,I could not tune anymore the 7 Mhz antenne
connected on both ANT1 or on the ANT2 connection

The software system the K2 is tuning well but could not find anymore a
correct value of 1/1,I suppose.

During the automatic tuning procedure the SWR leds are swiping around 1.7
and 2.5 (yellow leds on frontpanel of KAT100).

And the systems stays tuning yet with no final result !!

This last was not happens before the tuning procedure was very quick and
short and the indication on the KAT100 was 1/1.

I do have check the antenne himself and the antenne coax cables again
nothing wrong with them ,they are all still 1/1.

I think I do have damaged some components inside the KAT100 due possible RF
injection or something like that during the TX operation I made ?
Any suggestions are welcome, where I have to take a look on it.

I do have made some measurements already

Aligned to ANT 1 next relays are supplied K1-K3-K4-K6-K12 (12VDC).

Aligned to ANT2 next relays are supplied K7-K13-K17-K18 (12VDC).

I do have measured between the switching contacts of those activated relays
1-3-4 everything seems to be have the correct values during changeover ?

To be honest because I do have not mutch experience with the KAT100
schematic,I could not direct follow witch way the RX signal is exactly
following during

the 2 positions of ANT1 and ANT2 !!

I hope someone could me point into the correct direction .

Regards Jean ON4AEF.

that is one of the mods that have been done to a number of the K2s. It
enhances the visual of the front panel. It can be undone, IF and ONLY ifvery
carefully, so as not to damage the front panel pcb.

[Elecraft] KXBC3 Clock accuracy

2015-10-01 Thread Pierre

Hi to all

The accuracy of the KXBC3 clock is at best marginal ...

But ... Looking at the schematic of the KXBC3, the real time clock seems
to be a part of chip PIC24F16KA10. And a reference to that chip says this:

29.3.9 Calibration
The real-time crystal input can be calibrated using the periodic
auto-adjust feature. When
properly calibrated, the RTCC can provide an error of less than 3 seconds
per month. This is
accomplished by finding the number of error clock pulses and storing the
value into the lower half
of the RCFGCAL register. The 8-bit signed value loaded into the lower half
of RCFGCAL is
multiplied by four and will be either added or subtracted from the RTCC
timer, once every minute.

Refer to the steps below for RTCC calibration

(Reference: http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/39696b.pdf )

So I wonder if some calibration could be done via a software mod. My KXBC3
clock gain about 15 seconds per week ... far away from 3 seconds per month
... ??

[Elecraft] KX3 - DC Plug +

2015-09-07 Thread Pierre
... Solutions found. One of the pad of the KX3s DC connector was disconnected.
I simply removed the side panel, and with a thin point soldering tool, the
place was sufficient to get to the pad (while protecting the plastic) and
re-solder it Hope that it will hold ... simple solution.

And about the pixel problem, it was related to the RF control (RF not 0) so I
did the correction ... and no more annoying "pixel" ...

Many thanks for your help.

[Elecraft] KX3 - DC Plug +

2015-09-06 Thread Pierre
Hi Folks

Well after 3600+ QSOs with my KX3/SN190, I now have a couple of problems:

1- The DC plug is working intermittently.Think that I have to resolder it.
Since I got the factory-built version, I would like to know what is the
shortest way to (de)-assemble the rig to do the repair...? I Have the battery
charger, tuner and roofing filters options in the radio.

2- The second pixel on the SWR display is lighted even without signal. Not a
major problem .. just want to know what is going on ...

Thanks de Pierre VE2PID

[Elecraft] :K2 Homebrew external digital interface with build-in soundcard device

2015-01-23 Thread Behiels jean-Pierre

Hi Elecraft members;

I already have build a K2/10.
My next project is to homebrew a digital interface for general purpose with
external soundcard into a separated Elecraft EC2 project enclosure.
Is there anyone who could give my some addresses and advise witch kind of
soundcard is usuable for this purpose ?
I presume a standard PC soundcard is not really useful for build-in in a
EC2-box without any PC support(connectors and so on)
You must now that I must solder my DC transceiver PC isolation circuit to
this soundcard as well.
I presume I could not solder on a standard PCI slot of sutch soundcard, not
talking about supplying this unit and so on
I will work with some small audio transformer, and some opto couplers for the
DC isolation between both.
(transceiver and PC USB port).
I look forward to receive some idees and any good designs and some usefull
information (addresses where to buy)around.
I hope someone could help my with my request.

Kindly regards Jean ON4AEF.

As I understand it, the mounting bracket is made of 2 parts at a angle less

If, so, if I operate with the KX3 without extending the legs, the Pico would

[Elecraft] KXPD3 again...

2012-08-07 Thread Pierre
Hi folks,

Well, after more than 2 months of operations with the KXPD3 and more than
350 QSOs, I still have trouble with that paddle. It occasionally misses
either a dit or a dah. On these occasions, when I push the paddle, the
contact don't produces anything.

So far, the fixes that have read:

 - clean the black anodizing around the hole where the head of the thumb
screw sits. I was told that it was done at the factory starting at a S/N
earlier than mine, so I did not tried it. Maybe I should do it.
 - To 'file' the contacts screws.. Done this, but not much change...
 - Changing the spring: I did not do it, and wonder of it could be THE fix..

It is a bit strange that after all the complaints about the KXPD3, Elecraft
has not fixed that once and for all...?

About the spring, I would suggest that Elecraft provides us with a set of 3
to 4 new springs of different tensions so that we can test/choose the one
that works best for each user.

[Elecraft] [KX3] NR setting

2012-08-03 Thread Pierre
.. On page 13 of the KX3 manual, we can read this:

Holding NR turns on noise reduction and displays its setting, which can be
adjusted using the knob above the switch. Tap any switch to exit the setting
display.

I have installed the NR but cannot adjust its setting using the control knob
above the switch. Am I missing something?

Thanks de VE2PID KX3 # 190

[Elecraft] KX3 KXAT3 SWR re-tune request threshold

2012-08-01 Thread Pierre
Hi folks,

For years, I have worked portable with an inverted-vee as a multiband antenna
and a ladder line feeder. With the KX1 internal tuner, the T1 or a LDG Z-817,
once tuned in a band, I did not have to re-tune as long as I stayed in that
band.

However, with the KXAT3 and with the same antenna, the ATU symbol often begins
to 'flash' if I change frequency within a band requiring a new tuning even if I
tuned on that band.

So... I wonder if a new menu item could be added in the KX3 offering the
possibility to set the SWR threshold over which there would be no re-tune
request by the KXAT3? That threshold could be adjustable offering 3 choices
like 1.5:1 and 2:2 or also even to 3:1 for example. I can cope easily with a
3:1 SWR, the loss is not so great...

Meanwhile, thanks again for that wonderful rig.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 KXAT3 SWR re-tune request threshold

2012-08-01 Thread Pierre
Hi Stan,

What I often do is to make very frequent band change so I would have to
repeat each time the bypass/debypass process... I would prefer to have a
higher threshold for all bands.

Or another possibility: At the start of a session, I could do a tuning
somewhere in each band I plan to use. Then I would by-pass the ATU. Don't
know if the L/C setting would be retained and recalled on band changes even
if the ATU is by-passed..??

[Elecraft] KX3 - Roofing filters

2012-07-23 Thread Pierre
Hello to all.

Maybe that I don't understand the real utility of the roofing filter but I
observed this. Last saturday, we were on a SOTA summit using two KX3s about 40
feet appart transmitting CW at 5 W. And even with the roofing filters on, we
heard each other's sending as a diffuse noise. I know that changion RX shift to
8 disable the roofing filters, but we were not using that shift.

So, am I missing something about the use of these filters? Are they designed
for operations with operators near each other like SOTA activation on a crowded
summit ?

Re: [Elecraft] KX1 RX problem

2009-08-02 Thread Pierre
Hi Don,

Well, I am really not gifted when it comes to repair. I tried your
solution, but more problems appeared. Last one,
I touched something with a metal screwdriver and now the last digit of the
led is not working!!

So, I would like to ask yousomething: do some repairs at your QTH??

If so, and if you agree, I could send you my KX1.. and I would of course
pay you any charge for repairing and shipping via Paypal or international
money order).

The problems

Last LED not working (newest mistake I made)
Sudden drop on RX on 30 and 20 (. I get a 1.0 SWR on TX on all bands with a
dummy load, made the checks you suggested, but not fixed)
I made a wire jumper to repair a broken link when I tried to introduce a
scew for a new paddle. This is ok but unesthetic)..
Maybe not optimised for max RX. In the past, I made the mo suggested to
raise a little the power output

I really love my KX1 made over 1500 QSO since building it in Feb 2004 and
want to do more

Thanks for your attention, and have a nice day

 Pierre,

That is a strange combination of bands to produce a problem.
My guess is that you have either a faulty relay contact or a bad solder
connection/toroid lead in the KXAT1. Perhaps a relay contact that
makes contact until you pass RF through it.
You could try the last two troubleshooting steps shown on page 11 of the
 KXAT1 manual.

I inadvertently pushed to far a screw designed for a new paddle in the hole

Now, the case of the KX1 gets warm even in receive mode. That heat seems to

[Elecraft] K2/100 Problem on 80 meters - Solved

2009-02-19 Thread Pierre
Hello Elecrafters,

The problem which appeared recently on my K2/100 #5170 is now gone. I did today
the upgrade (KPA100UPKT ) and the rig works just fine. I had ordered the
upgrade package a year ago, but never installed it. New changes have been made
since then to the upgrade kit; and, thanks to Elecraft, I have received the new
parts yesterday.

...And for that problem (high reflected power showing on the antenna tuner
meter and high SWR, so low power output, but only on 80m), I don't know exactly
what caused it (maybe some kind of oscillation?) since that upgrade required
many changes. But anyway, glad to use my K2/100 on 80 meters again.

Thanks to Don W3FPR for good suggestions on private emails.

[Elecraft] K2/100 problem on 80 meters

2009-02-11 Thread Pierre
From Don W3FPR

But, if you have added the KPA100UPKT, I must ask if your upgrade kit included
a new C31 capacitor of 0.22 uF value. Many KPA100UPKT kits did
not include this capacitor until recently. If this situation fits your case,
send an email to pa...@elecraft.com asking for a new capacitor...

Sometime ago (around 2007), I ordered and received the KPA100UPKT upgrade kit
for my K2/100 #5170, but never installed it. I will do it soon.
After checking the (old) package and the manual page, I see that there are new
parts in the instruction errata which I did not receive in 2007: 5 capacitors
and a crystal... so will ask Elecraft for them before I start that upgrade.

Thanks to all for you suggestions.

[Elecraft] K2/100 Problem on 80 meters

2009-02-10 Thread Pierre
Hi to all

I have a problem on my K2/100 that manifests itself only on 80 meters:

If I operate QRP at 10 watts, I can match my antenna with a manual tuner, the
SWR is very good near 1:1, and the rig operates smoothly.
But as soon as I switch (via power control) to QRO, without changing the
settings on the tuner, the reflected power needle swings wildly as soon as I
stop keying, even at only 11 watts.

For all other bands (40 up) the rig works fine QRP or QRO.

I would like to know where to look at.. ?

Thanks for your help!

[Elecraft] K2/100 Final Berillium transistors

2007-04-13 Thread Pierre Desjardins

Hi to all,

As mentionned in the KPA100 manual, Q1-Q2 2SC2879 contain Beryllia Ceramic.
Do not break, cut, or crush them, since the dust or vapor can be dangerous.

However, there is a new design, the 2SC2879A. The difference between the
2SC2879 and the 2SC2879A is that the A version is RoHS compliant, and uses
an Aluminum Oxide insulator (color gray) on the header vs. Berillium Oxide
(color white).

Hope for all that Elecraft will use the new ''A'' design in future
upgrades...

[Elecraft] KPA100 RFC10 choke

Hi,

I built the 100 W PA about 15 months ago. There was a choke across the

Any reason for it?

[Elecraft] KPA100 RFC10 choke

2007-04-07 Thread Pierre Desjardins
Well, I think that the removal of RFC10 is adding a risk to this fine rig.
To rely on external protection (at the antenna
or at the transmission line is risky at best.. As far as I know, all major
brands (Icom, Yaesu..) are providing the extra protection

given by an appropriate choke inside the rig.

I am surprised to see that Elecraft did not find a way to keep the choke
inside the rig and the protection associated with it, instead of

relying on arbitrary external elements...

[Elecraft] Coaxial switch and two rigs

2006-05-04 Thread Pierre Desjardins
Hi Elecrafters.. maybe that question has already been posted, but I ask it
again. I plan to use an IC-706 MKIIG for SSB/VHF operations and a K2 for CW
only. I have a Daiwa CS-201 coax switch. The ''output'' of the switch will
go to an ATU (LDG AT-100Pro), and the inputs to each of the rig.

That switch shorts the unused output connector. If by distraction I use the
K2 when the switch is at '706' position's, maybe I risk to damage the finals
of the K2 (and same problem at inverse for the 706).

My question: Is the ''switch'' approach a relatively safe solution, or is is
better to manually change the setup via coax permutation?

[Elecraft] KX1- 80m and random wire

2006-02-27 Thread Pierre Desjardins

Hi Elecrafters,

For field operations with a KX/40.30.20m, I currently use a 28 feet random
wire at the end of a 22 feet pole, and an single 16 feet radial on ground.
The computed impedance is 89 - j 341 ohms at 7 MHz, matched by the
KXAT1.

However, at the low end of 80 m, it should be around 54 - j 1316 ohms,
giving very high SWR. Can the ATU match such values?

[Elecraft] DSP Filters

2006-01-27 Thread Pierre Desjardins
A question about DSP... I did not find any indication about the exact sequence
of filters display in DSP.

For instance, lets say that we select CF2 and the tap XFIL; then, the display
shows an FL filter. But I am not sure that it is one. If I go through until I
get FL1, it does'nt like the normal FL1 that I have. Especially if the denoiser
was ''on'' in DSP. As I understand it, the xtals filters are changing the IF
(RF) bandwidth and the DSP's ones are doing the same thing, but on an audio
range after digitization. Since I have set the same bandwidths for each group
(i.e. FL2 like CF2, FL3 like CF3...), the difference is not always apparent.

So, how to toggle between the cristals and DSP filters with a correct display
of the set choosen?

[Elecraft] Noise Blanker gain

2006-01-22 Thread Pierre Desjardins
About the noise blanker: Mine is working fine on all bands except for a
particular noise on 40 m. It is killed completly by the NB on all other bands.
But it seems that the gain is not always (works some time) sufficient to
trigger it at 7,050 MHz. That noise is rising to full strength in about 3
seconds or so, then vanish after about 10 seconds.

I plan to change C16 to a higher value (better coupling to the amp stage). My
question: is it a good (or the best/only) way to add some gain to the blanker?

[Elecraft] BFO Test - CAL FCTR

2005-12-14 Thread Pierre Desjardins
Update: The problem was at L33. Resoldered and replaced the wires correctly
and got back to a good 5 kHz BFO range. Maybe a loose contact or a short on
the coil.

BTW, I got a tip from another Elecrafter: Since the sole purpose of R116 is
to retain L33, adding ''spaghetti sleeving to the leads of the 5.1 megohm
resistor may prevent accidental shorts of few turns of that coil.

[Elecraft] BFO Test - CAL FCTR

2005-12-13 Thread Pierre Desjardins
Hi to all Elecrafters

I recently built K2/100 # 5170. At the BFO Test (page 62), using CAL FCTR, I
got correct readings: Center at 4913,55 kHz, BFO High 4917,23 and BFO low at
4912,41 respectively.

But something new is happening. The readings changed to 4913,85 (C), 4915.97
(H) and 4913,58 (L).. so that the narrow filters (1 kHz) are almost impossible
to center correctly. I use the Spectrogam method to adjust the filters.

Where should I look to get it back to the previous range?

Thanks de Pierre VE2PID

[Elecraft] Miles per Watt

Subject: [Elecraft] Miles per Watt

Miles per Watt is nonsense data to impress
people.because nothing happens in linear mode!!!

Not a linear behavior for sure...

Lets say that a 500 mW signal at 7,4 mHz is received 4000 km away and that
both antennas are half-waves dipoles. We could be tempted to say that an 1
watt signal would reach 8000 km in the same conditions.

But according to the Friis transmission formula, the first 500 mW signal is
reduced to 0,0096 microwatts at the received end, and the second one (1
watt) is a whooping 0,0048 microwatts! Still readable? Not sure...

The inverse of the square of the distances is working there, hyperbolic, not
linear. Twice the power, but the distance doubled, squared makes 4 and the
fraction becomes 1/2.

[Elecraft] KIO2 connection with computer

2004-11-07 Thread Pierre Vallee
I installed the KIO2 about one year ago. It worked fine. I now have a problem
with it. I can't get a connection between the K2 and the computer using the K2
Remote V1.0 Beta program. The computer com1 setting is fine and the K2 port is
ON. In testing the cable between the K2 and the computer with a line tester, I
get a no reading on pin 2 .

In doing the voltage checks for U1, I find readings of 12.77v on pin 5 (should
be -8) and 0v on pin 12 (should be 5). I believe the circuit diagram shows
these pins being part of the transmit circuitry (pin 2). Could U1 be my
problem? Any suggestions. Thanks

[Elecraft] Re: KX1 Random Wire Antenna recommendations

2004-08-06 Thread Pierre Desjardins
I actually use that same setup (28' wire and 16' ground, BNC adapter). I get
pretty good DX results, and the SWR is about 1:1 on all 3 bands. The end of
that antenna is attached to a 22' fiberglass telescopic pole.

I would be fine to know about your ''mixed results''?

I have had some mixed results using Model 1296 BNC adapter using a 28'
Random wire with a 16' ground wire. I would like to hear from some other
KX1 operators and what works for them.

[Elecraft] Like MFJ's 931 Artificial Ground

2004-08-02 Thread Pierre Desjardins

Hi Bill

Got one last year to use on a vertical in conjunction with a standard tuner and
now as a conterpoise to a LW antenna. It resolved effectively a high SWR
problem I had.

It consists of a LC network which creates a low impedance path to a standard
ground. An L and C network don't create a ground; it rather makes a poor ground
more effective.

Will send you a schematic of the MFJ 931 via email.
If anyone else is interrested, let me know.

[Elecraft] Re: KX1 and airport security

2004-07-06 Thread Pierre Desjardins
I will travel soon with the KX1, the antenna coils, etc

AND.. a telescopic pole for antenna setup. The key will be the policy of the
airlines, and then the decision of the specific aircrafts personnel. X-ray
scans will show that it is only fiberglass, and there is no sharp point. But
because it is 46 inches long, it has the potential as a club, and may be
treated the same as golf clubs, baseball bats, hockey sticks, etc.

Hoping that it won't be ''confiscated'' in some european airport I will pass
trough.

Advices are welcome
