Yesterday, I installed a KIO3B update kit in my K-3. Everything appears
to work OK except for the USB serial port. At first, this morning,
everything seemed to be working OK - the K3 was controlling my amp and
reading out frequency to DXLab Commander. I started trying to configure
N1MM to read radio frequency, and things went steadily downhill from
there. At this point, I have no frequency readout on either program,
and cannot send F-key messages from N1MM. I have tried every available
COM port under Windows 10, and checked for hidden ports (none). I have
restarted the computer several times with no change.

Can anyone suggest something to try, or a test that might reveal what's
going on?

[Elecraft] KAT 500

2014-03-19 Thread Robert Garceau
Just decided to hook up my KAT500.

I'm having problems downloading the firmware updates.

I hooked up the cable from the KAT500 to one of my USB ports on my computer.

I can't get the KAT500 to talk to the computer.

Could use some assistance here.

Thanks, bob

If its shutting down only when the power level is above 12W I'd pull the
KPA3 and check for the "burned connector" problem - particularly if the
symptoms have been getting progressively worse.

Re: [Elecraft] The P3 Effect

2013-03-09 Thread Robert Garceau
I agree with working the edge of the pileups.
I have been to St.Croix, not exactly a dxpedition, over a 4 year period.
I bring the K3 with me.
It still amazes me that I work 1,000 plus stations each year, get requests
for QSL's with GS's and a bunch through the bureau.
For some people, KP2 (Virgin Islands) must be a new one.

I do work split most of the time, especially on CW and RTTY.
And if the pileup gets rough, I work the edges.
I'm not a big phone guy. On SSB, I operate simplex.

Funny story:
In 2011, on my first day in St.Croix, I was working a pileup and getting
great reports from Europe and the U.S.
Later in the day, I found that I was only running 30 watts. Apparently the
K3 thought I was still hooked up to the KPA500.
I increased the power to 100 watts and the K3 shut down. I found out that I
had a bad power supply (PS was in rental shack) and could not exceed 30
watts.
With 30 watts and an A3S, I still worked over 1,000 stations. Of course the
rental (NP2N) is high on a hill and clear signals to EU and US.
Yes, there's an amp in the shack, but decided not to power it.

Yes, that was my experience on Conway Reef last year. I could only work a
given RX frequency for a couple of Qs before having to hunt for a clearer
call and start again. I began to notice that the weaker signals that I
could copy tended to be on clearer frequencies, so they would be my guide to
where to start again. It seemed to work pretty well as I did a fellow who
said he was running 1W on 20M SSB. I think he was from the level of
excitement in his voice.

I've had really good luck working DX by calling at the upper edge of the
pileup. As the DX op I would often just go 'up' to the upper edge to find
a clear call, and I think a lot of other DX ops do the same when the pileups
become a roaring wall of noise.

Having been " out there a few times" I know I spin the dial usually after
1-2 Q's as dual receivers and other tools brings the pileups to who I just
worked . I will usually jump the edges, then jump the center and repeat that
in odd combinations. Today one cannot listen for the gang on one frequency
very long...so it's always " keep moving"

won't have any fears of scratching or dinging the equipment since the case

Hi Bob,
To get that display, you need to be in Fixed-Tune display mode. When it
shows +- frequencies, it is in Tracking mode. Tap Menu, select FixTrack,
and tap the knob to toggle between the two displays. I have one of the
function keys set up to do that but I rarely use Tracking mode,
preferring the Fixed-Tune display.

Hi Bob,
To get that display, you need to be in Fixed-Tune display mode. When it
shows +- frequencies, it is in Tracking mode. Tap Menu, select FixTrack,
and tap the knob to toggle between the two displays. I have one of the
function keys set up to do that but I rarely use Tracking mode,
preferring the Fixed-Tune display.

[Elecraft] P3 question

2011-12-02 Thread Robert Garceau
The screen on my P3 has a center freq. of for example 28.050 and range
readings in the left corner is -50. and right corner is +50.

How do I get the minus and plus readings to read actual frequencies? Like
28.000 and 28.100?

[Elecraft] For info Purposes

2011-11-23 Thread Robert Garceau
I just returned from my 2nd trip to St.Croix, Virgin Islands. I brought my
K3 along as a guest.

The K3 was with me on the plane and stored under the seat in front of me in
a nice bag purchased from Rose Kopp (N7HKW).

I brought the radio with me last year and Murphy paid a visit.

The tower at the station that I was using was stuck at 15 feet and the A3S
was stuck on Europe.

Nevertheless, I did make some QSO's on CW, SSB and RTTY.

I was using the station of NP2N.

This year Murphy struck in a different way. I arrived on Thursday, Nov. 3rd
and promptly set got on 10 meters and had a great run into the U.S. and JA
on SSB. I was getting great reports. Loud, 59 plus. I was in heaven.

The tower and rotor had been repaired, so I was FB to operate.

After my nice run on 10, I noticed that I was only putting out 27 watts.

I have a KPA500 at home, which I use and apparently the K3 still remembered
the setting from back home, as it was suppose to.

Then I attempted to up the power to 100 watts and the K3 shut down. I
experimented and the best I could do was somewhere between 30 and 40 watts
depending on band/mode. That's when I received the visit from Murphy. The
power supply (20 amps) in the shack (I did not take one with me) was not
working properly. We tried another PS and had the same problem.

Anyway, with only 30 watts max, I made 1174 QSO's on CW, SSB and RTTY. I did
receive a variety of signal reports. Five nine plus were some of the reports
that I received from Europe. The station is on a hill and when I stand on
the porch, I can see ocean to the north and northeast. From some stations in
England, Finland and further north, I was not so strong. This was on 10 and
15. I operated strictly split.

Obviously, I like the K3. And the old saying that you don't need a ton of
power to work the world is very true. When I got back home, I hooked
everything up and I'm back up to 100 watts again.

Have a nice Thanksgiving, Bob, W1EQ (KP2/W1EQ)

K3, KPA 500 and P3 on order ETA 12/1.

[Elecraft] P3

2011-10-21 Thread Robert Garceau
I saw a P3 in action today. I think I got to have one.

I have the KPA500 and K3.

The RS232 on the K3 is hooked up to the Microham KII.

I assume I need to get a Y cable to get the P3 and MKII into the RS232 at
the K3?

I must say I was impressed with how that little box works.

[Elecraft] KPA500 on RTTY

2011-09-11 Thread Robert Garceau
Has anybody pushed the 500 limit on RTTY with the KPA500?

Especially in a contest.

I noticed that the fan does accelerate when using HP on RTTY.

Just wondering how the amp would hold up under 400-500 watts running on
RTTY.

I put my KPA500 on 10 today for the first time and noticed a rather
unexpected behavior. Often, on the first character of transmission, the
K3 drive power apparently spikes, driving the KPA500 to more than 700
watts. This seems to stabilize following that first dit or two, but I
have to reduce drive to below 12 w before that behavior stops. Seems the
100 watt module in the K3 is behaving poorly. Anyone else noticed this?
Doesn't seem to be a problem on other bands. (SWR is 1.3:1).

Re: [Elecraft] Pileups and the KPA500

2011-07-29 Thread ROBERT GARCEAU
I worked them on cw, 17 meters, using a 3 el steppir at 36 feet.
I have the sub recvr, so I was able to track his method of operations and had
no
problem working him.

However, on RTTY, that's been another story.
Actually, have no way (or haven't figured out a way) to copy RTTY on the sub.

Actually, since I have the 1 contact that I need, I'm going to wait till next
week and try to work them on some of the other bands.

To add a little bit about the KPA500 at this station.
Anything else that I have heard I have worked since I got the amp.

I'm very happy with the product.

[Elecraft] low power on 6 meters

2011-07-17 Thread Robert Garceau
I have seen this issue posted before, but no answers that I can see.

I have a K3 and the output is no more than 52 watts with an swr of
1.23..sometime get it up to 62.

Now I have the KPA500 and using 40 watts to exite the amp, I get just a tad
over 425 watts.

Don't think I want to push it over 40 watts. And to be honest there probably
isn't much difference between 425 and 500, but would like to know why I
can't get the 100 like I should..

[Elecraft] KPA500 #165

2011-07-16 Thread Robert Garceau
My KPA500 S/N 165 kit, received July 13th was finally finished today at
2:45 p.m. .

Jumped right into the CWT ops contest at 3:00 p.m. and ran the amp full
power for an hour.

Worked just fine. Ran 482 watts on 20 meters using a 3 el stepper. Stayed
pretty steady at 482..

Tracking with my K3 worked perfectly using the aux cable.

Just finished using the Y cable to integrate the MicroHam KII and writelog.

No problems noted.

Building the kit:

No unusual problems. I just took my time. I was not in a rush.

Made a couple of dumb mistakes. I got a bit wrapped up over the length of
the 10 standoffs used to attach the front front panel circuit board to the
front panel. I'm sure Dale Farmer is scratching his head after a couple of
emails that I sent to him. Those Elecraft guys must have a ton of patience
dealing with email questions. All questions were answered within a couple of
hours. Great job guys.

I just wasn't reading the parts list properly.

Like the K3 build, the KPA500 went together without a hitch.

I guess to fill out the K-line, I need the P3.

Y' All

According to page 21 of the KPA500 owner's manual, when the Aux Cable is
used
with the KPA500 the PTT Cable should not be used.

I have the KPAK3AUX cable connected between the K3 And the KPA500 via the Y
cable that came with the cable kit, so that I can continue using my KR2C2.

The KRC2 is working as was before.

I have set all the power levels for the amp Standby and Operate of the
KPA500
and I can see that it is controlling the K3's output power in both Standby
and
Operate, and is changing bands when the K3 changes bands, but the KPA500 is
not
keying when in Operate on any band.

The Amp was keying and producing output as expected with around 30W drive
before
I hooked up the AUX cable. I'm sure I've failed to make a setting on the
amp or
the rig, but I'll be darned if I can find a setting that even vagely sounds
like
the one to make.

Can someone shed some light on what I need to do to get the amp to key with
the
Aux Cable connected?

point...form factor...or electrical engineering factor that brought the KPA500
