RE: [Elecraft] K3 Display T Symbol

2008-09-15 Thread Robert Brandon
Manual, Page 12: T indicates FM/tone, or CW/data text decode.

Hmmm. I don't think there's anything in the menus that allows for setting a
CTCSS tone. Maybe that will be added later.

What does the letter T mean when it appears in the lower right hand corner
of the display?

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Display T Symbol

2008-09-15 Thread Robert Brandon
Oops, there it is on page 29.

Tone encode is set up by holding PI TCH.
Rotate VFO A to select a CTCSS tone
frequency (or the European repeater access
tone, 1750 Hz). Use VFO B to turn tone encode
on (PL TONE) or off (PL OFF).

[Elecraft] K3 all mode squelch?

2008-09-13 Thread Robert Brandon
I was tinkering with the SQ MAIN menu setting in FW version 2.38 and hit the
DISP button for an explanation. It says . tap '1' to use squelch in all
modes.

Sounds like a nice feature, but it's not working for me. Squelch only works
in FM. Is the DISP text out ahead of the feature?

[Elecraft] More changeable items during transmit

2008-09-08 Thread Robert Brandon
I love the ability to toggle RIT during transmit.

The next items on my wish list would be toggling the RX antenna, normalizing
the bandpass controls, and changing filters.

Keep up the good work, guys!

RE: [Elecraft] More changeable items during transmit

2008-09-08 Thread Robert Brandon
Best of all is a TR-LOG feature that allows you to tap the shift keys to
bend the RIT -- then hit both to clear it. This was a feature in the
Kenwood command set that Elecraft adopted. I don't *think* any other
programs have this feature, but I could be mistaken.

I love the ability to toggle RIT during transmit.

I agree, although I have RIT on most of the time anyway. What I really
appreciate is being able to adjust the RIT during transmit. When someone
answers a CQ, I am busy typing in their call sign and not able to
simultaneously adjust RIT. So, while my response transmission is going out
to them I can adjust the RIT. I've already heard their signal and can
blindly adjust the RIT for optimum copy when they come back with their
exchange. Then, my TU message (or subsequent CQ message) clears the RIT to
be ready for the next caller.

RE: [Elecraft] Prospective K3 Owner

2008-08-26 Thread Robert Brandon
I used a muffin pan to sort out my hardware. It worked very well. I didn't
have enough cups to sort everything out, so I pre-sorted the most similar
looking parts (e.g., small black pan heads from small black flat heads).
And I separated out the small number of zinc pan heads of unusual lengths
from the large number of those that were all the same.

There were quite a few errata in my version of the assembly instructions.
Rather than doing a lot of paper cutting and pasting, I simply used a
highlighter pen to tag sections where I needed to refer to the errata.

Yes, a magnetized screwdriver is very handy for guiding the screws to
their holes without having to fumble with them. (There are a LOT of
screws!)

Some people pre-sort all the screws. I just dumped them and the
washers into a shallow pan and hunted through them as they were called
out. But do pay close attention to the screw lengths and washer types
specified in the instructions.

I've been using the Kenwood adapter including footswitch since December with
no problems. Maybe Bob Heil is having a senior moment..
