Jim... How am I to understand the inclusion [screen shot] in the message from Jim W7RY on 4/3/24 concerning a micro controller in the K2? His message involves groups.io which may explain the difference. I still don't understand the relationship between the groups.io list and the Elecraft list. Re: [Elecraft] K3s power level macro
Mike and Jack... Thanks for your suggestions. Mike, I'm not clear "where" you are implementing your macro; perhaps you are using the K3 utility. I'd like to avoid that and interact with the radio directly. Jack, what I'm looking for is not different drive levels on different bands, but switching drive levels on the same band "instantaneously." For example, I'm chasing DX and not getting through at 100w; turn on the amp, hit the macro button, and transmit; no adjustment. You might have noticed that the power level knob changes the K3s power out very slowly, and I'm trying to get around that with a macro. Thanks much. Re: [Elecraft] K2 versus K3 specs
Brian... The K2 is somewhat of a spiritual event. There are many - me included - who are very attached to their K2's, not because the specs are amazing - many modern radios perform better - but because we built them, got familiar with them, used them in memorable situations, and became fondly attached. Those who fall into this category would never sell their K2's. All that said, the K2 does a good job at what it was designed to do: a good, analog, CW, QRP, portable radio that one could assemble/build all on their own with fun being a key feature. It's not a K3 by a long shot, but it does tend to bring out a smile every time it lights up. Do what's best for you. ...robert KE2WY On 7/14/2022 20:44, brianpepperdine brianpepperdine wrote: I realize there are a myriad of differences between the K2 and K3, but today I read the specs in each owners manual and was somewhat surprised that the each is listed at about -135 dBm sensitivity (pre-amp on for K2...pre-amp off at - 130 dBm for K2). I was curious since I was going thru those tests on the K2/KAT100 set I havein anticipation of any hamfest that might come around...whether to retain or not. If this is basically what this rig does (K2) aside from what more my K3 offers in other ways (variable bandwidth filter etc) then the K2 seems to be something to hold onto, pending a decent offer I could live with. Re: [Elecraft] Collecting stamps vs. seashells -- and why this is not wildly O.T.
Once one becomes competent at CW, other modes loose much of their attraction. ...robert KE2WY On 6/12/2022 16:24, w7a...@gmail.com wrote: I found Wayne's post to be both amusing and insightful. "Collecting" is a big part of many hobbies, and ham radio is no exception. Nearly all of us collect something, if not a lot of things, as part of our practice of this hobby. We collect certificates indicating accomplishments like WAS, WAC, DXCC, etc., we may become collectors of keys and paddles, or of "boat anchors", and on and on. Certainly nearly every one of us has a collection of QSL cards! Before ham radio I collected a lot of things as a youth. Stamps were one of the things I collected, and I was frequently purchasing packets of stamps from companies I saw advertising in various magazines. This was kind of a neighborhood thing, as several of us all did the same thing. Perhaps the strangest thing we collected was a list of license plate numbers of out of state cars passing through our little town of Bend, Oregon. The ultimate objective was to hopefully have at least one identified plate from every state! I came close!! It's ironic how similar this process is to WAS-Delaware was one of the few states I never documented! In my case, collecting became an early obsession in my ham radio life. I was licensed at 13, and had managed to accumulate enough paper route money to purchase a BC-348 receiver. However, initially I had no transmitter. My two "Elmers" were quite aware of this problem, and at one of our local ham club meetings they announced that they were going to donate all the necessary parts, and expertise, allowing me to construct my own transmitter-with considerable assistance from them!! That process included making a chassis from sheet aluminum and winding a home made power transformer large enough to power an 807! The whole process, from the time my Elmer scribbled out a schematic on paper to completion, took about 10 days or so. One of my Elmers (W7GNJ) owned a bike shop (where the construction process took place), and it's amazing how many parts he had tucked away in corners and boxes there! There was a "hitch" to this gift. My Elmers wanted to make sure that I became reasonably competent as a CW op. So, they put a price on this gift. I had to collect 150 QSL cards, signifying CW contacts, before I could fully claim actual ownership of the transmitter! The process took several months and 2 or 3 batches of QSL cards purchased from either Walter Ashe or World Radio Labs (100 for $1)! Not everyone was willing (or able) to exchange cards. Completing that requirement was more rewarding to me than just about any other "certificate" I've ever gotten. Also, I think I can say I did become reasonably competent at CW. At least competent enough to be invited to become an NCS on the Oregon State CW Net. I've been a 95% CW op ever since! Hello, all... While not in a position to buy a K4x, I have found the various discussions valuable in maximizing usage of my K3s. Comments about how the K4 performs better than the K3 [fill in the blank] point to where/how I can investigate the K3s, learn about the performance issue(s), and maximize the K3s' performance. Obviously, many people here are very knowledgeable about radio characteristics and performance. This is like an on-going tutorial which is not easily found in other forums. Thanks to all for the high level discussions and to Wayne and Eric for providing the "blackboards." A good day to all. ...robert KE2WY -- Robert G Strickland, PhD ABPH - KE2WY rc...@verizon.net.usa Syracuse, New York, USA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] List postings and K3's and K4's
i sent this again because I couldn't find it. Then, I looked down in the K4 bin, and there it was. Victimized by my own message filters. HI. Sorry for the noise. ... robert On 2/24/2022 20:18, Robert Strickland via Elecraft wrote: I've been periodically wondering why there seems to be so few posting to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Headphones for Hearing Loss
I have ReSound hearing aids with a BlueTooth receive capability. They link up with my iPhone automatically. Can I buy a generic BlueTooth transmitter, plug it into my K3s and have the same type of hassle free link, or are there compatibility technical issues about which I am unaware? Thanks for info and opinions. ...robert KE2WY On 26 Jan 2021 16:22, Joseph Shuman via Elecraft wrote: I have severe high-frequency hearing loss, up to 85 dB at 6-8KHz and 60 dB at 3-4KHz. I have the equalizer on the KX2 set to boost the highs, OK with an external amp & speaker but it is not enough with the headphones I have. Any experience/recommendations with headphones that have a built-in equalizer or treble boost? SSB operator.
