Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Computer control a la Agilent?
Depending on what options the K3 has installed internally there is a fair amount of empty space inside the K3 box. I know mine (100W + XV3 + filters) seems mostly like an empty box inside :) It would not be hard for an enterprising person to install a small single-board microprocessor module inside the K3. This board would communicate commands via the existing serial interface and provide a ethernet/web page interface to the outside. You could also provide a digital audio interface and a IF spectrum display via ethernet this way. No difference from using an external computer, but it would make a very compact package. Because the audio is running in the same path (through the computer) for both recorded messages and live mic use it sounds EXACTLY the same for both. I don't operate SSB contests that much but I just use N1MM and a soundcard because it is cheaper than buying the K3DVR. I use a simple (1 transistor) homebrew mic preamp between the microphone (Heil dynamic headset) and the computer audio in. Audio out from the computer goes straight to the back of the K3. No, this would be to enable remote operation (over an internet link). No RF would go between the panel and the K3. People are buying TS-480's or similar to run over remote links even if they own a K3, because the 480 panel and main box can be easily remoted using ie www.remoterig.com. Here's something you might consider (or maybe already have :) ) If the KX3 front panel is almost identical in controls to the K3, maybe it could be paired with a K3 to act as a remote front panel. Similar to the detachable panel functionality available with many current mobile rigs. The advantage being that just the "panel" KX3 could operate as a self-contained QRP radio. Another new (free) software package under development combining an I/Q SDR panadapter and a contest logging program. Supports linux and windows: http://code.google.com/p/so2sdr/ features of the SDR panadapter with SO2SDR: -supports dual panadapter displays (for two radio contesting) -auto I/Q balancing -peak detection of signals -ability to mark signals on the panadapter (use to mark dupes in CW contests) -can be used to find open (unused) frequencies on a band -special support for Elecraft radios: it automatically inverts the display for the K2 when on the upper bands, for the K3 it reads the correct IF offset for the filter in use I can't guarantee it is completely free of bugs, but I use it for my own operating :) Tor N4OGW -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/SDR-IQ-IF-Questions-tp6246917p6248668.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Rf in the shack distorting audio
So, the question is, what can be done to fix the distorted audio when there a high level of RF in the shack (besides getting a better ground system - I plan to put in one or two more ground rods, but I won't be able to do that until after the ground defrosts in the spring). The mic I'm using is a RadioShack Electret replacement element in an old mobile mic case - the case is plastic and not shielded, but the cable is shielded, and I have grounded the mike jack in my K2. All suggestions about how I can eliminate the distortion will be greatly welcomed, as well as suggestions about how I can reduce the high level of RF in the shack besides adding more ground rods. I had similar problems, and they were cured by adding an RF choke to the SSB module: http://www.ac6rm.net/mailarchive/html/elecraft-list/2004-07/msg00453.html Tor N4OGW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 eHam Review on Jan 15
Hi all, I just saw a review of the K2 on eHam dated Jan 15, 2007 that gave it a 3 out of 5. A quick search of the elecraft archives didn't find any comments related to this review. A few of the points mentioned in the review make sense to me, but I only have a K1; so far. I would like to hear some K2 owners thoughts regarding this review. Have a great day!! 73, Richard, AI4SH They are all valid criticisms of the K2, it is not a perfect radio. The first (PTT/Key line) has been discussed extensively in the mailing list. Whether they affect your operating or not is up to you. For contest operating with SO2R (using 2 radios simultaneously) there are a few things about the K2 that are somewhat of a pain. The problem does not seem to be in the KPA100, because if I turn the power down to 10W I get similar response (10W one way, 15W the other way). I still don't know why it was doing this. Re-aligning the whole rig did not help. However, after increasing R98 to 680 Ohms I no longer get 160W on 160m. BTW I also tried to fix the low power on 10M. I rewound T4, T2, adjusted the output filters, fiddled with T1, and peaked very carefully. In the end I gained maybe 1 W, now 8W max on 10M (without KPA100). [Elecraft] strange K2 160m power problem

My other K2 (similar SN) does not do this, or if there is a difference in the 160m power it is too small to notice. The only thing different about #3134 is that is has somewhat lower 10m tx power, about 7W max without the KPA100. But it can still make 100w on 10m with the KPA/100. Ideas?? If I twiddle the power control AFTER I start transmitting on 160, the power returns to the correct level from 170w. I think this caused me to smoke the matching network on my 160m shunt-fed vertical during the IARU contest. I was driving an Ameritron AL1500 amp, which only needs about 50w drive to make 1500w out. When I first went to 160 in the contest, the swr jumped like crazy, and I confirmed by going outside that a doorknob cap in the shunt feed was smoking! I can't remember if I was on 10m before I qsyed to 160, but it is possible since I made a bunch of contacts there. I suspect that the increased drive put me way over 1500w for a short time. However, why can't this data be saved (at least to some approximation) when the rig is first aligned/built? Why re-determine it every time the band changes? Does it change strongly with temperature? My point is that especially when operating SO2R (standard if you want to win a contest these days!), you are changing bands all the time. Much more frequently than with only one rig. In the NAQP I frequently zip through the other bands to check for openings. One popular strategy in the Sprint now is to switch bands between QSO's. Yes, it is possible to try to keep band changes down, but in the heat of the battle, it's hard to remember that! [Elecraft] K2 Firmware change request
I used my pair of K2/100's in last weekend's NAQP CW. Band conditions were pretty good for August, and I ended up with 789 qso's. I use the pair SO2R, meaning I am listening on one band while transmitting simultaneously on another band. In the NAQP mults count on every band (including 160), and you change bands a lot. I was reminded again of a K2 firmware "bug" that has been very annoying to me: after changing bands, the K2 transmit power is reset to zero. I takes several dits for the power to come up to 100%. That means if I change bands, the first station I call gets something like "AOGW" instead of N4OGW! If I forgot to hit the tune button or send a string of random dits, the station I was calling frequently came back with "?" I'd rather not have to QRM other stations "tuning up" every time I change bands. Is it possible to make the K2 start out at 100% TX power? Is this supposed to protect the finals? In the NA Sprint contest (coming up in September!) this is a really big deal. There, you must QSY after calling CQ, and if the station I am calling misses my call, I may never hear him again!
