[Elecraft] KPA100 Middle Side Screw Alteration

2005-02-06 Thread Unifiedtx
I wonder if anyone has considered drilling out a hole in the middle side
screw location on the KPA-100 big enough to force in an externally splined
insert that has a 4-40 internal thread. The external spline would make the
insert
grab the heat sink firmly so it would not turn with the screw. Does anyone
know where such an insert could be found, and has anyone done this? Roy

[Elecraft] No Audio in K2

2005-01-24 Thread Unifiedtx
My K2/100 occasionally loses audio when it has been on a while with the AF
GAIN turned down (K2 on butnotbeingused). My K2 is an early model in the 2200
series serial number, and the AF mod was done. It also has the KDSP2 and
the 10th digit CW LED zero tuning mod. Whenever I lose the audio, I cannot
get
it back by turning the AF GAIN up. The RF GAIN works correctly and will
display all 10 digits if turned CCW while the audio is lost. Signals show up
normally on the S meter as I tune across the band. I noticed that I cannot
activate the DSP when the audio is gone. All other functions are normal. The
only way I can get the audio back is to cut the K2 off and then back on. The
audio returns to normal status and may remain that way until I turn the K2
backoff. I have the K2 grounded, but I notice the display may momentarily
change to either power setting or keyer speed as my hand approaches the K2.
Is
this an electrostatic condition I am going to have to live with? Has anyone
else experienced this? If so, what can be done to correct this? Roy Morris

[Elecraft] K2/100 with Alpha 99

2005-01-06 Thread Unifiedtx
Is it possible to key the K2/100 for CW QSK operation with the Alpha 99. If
so, how should the delay be set in the K2. I would rather key the K2 first
rather than keying the Alpha 99 and running the keying line back to the K2.
Roy Morris W4WFB

However if you get a QSK amp, like some of the Alpha's or TenTec's, you can
retain the degree of QSK that the K2 or K2/100 is able to provide.

[Elecraft] LED Display on KAT100

2005-01-01 Thread Unifiedtx
G3RXQ, Stewart, apparently has the same problem with his KAT100 that I have.
I have just learned that the erratic display on 30 meters is to be ignored.
The tuner works fine and gets the SWR down to 1:1 on all bands. And yes,
my tuner is well grounded. I have just learned to live with the erratic LED
indication. Roy Morris W4WFB

[Elecraft] KAT100 LED Configuratuin Jumpers

2004-11-26 Thread Unifiedtx
There are jumpers W1 through W6 that ground various pins of MCU U1 16F877
for LED control. W1 - W2: Both open = Auto. LED control; W1 = DOT; W2 = BAR
and W3 - W6 Leave open except as required (see manual). This information is
written on the KAT100 RF Board schematic Rev. A, dated 10-30-02, sheet 2 of 2.
I have not found anywhere in the manual that says anything about these
jumpers, especially W3 - W6. Does anyone know about these jumpers?
Also, there has to be a way to bypass stray RF to keep the SWR LEDs from
going ape. Surely something can be done such as putting .01pF caps across
each
LED (D103 - D112) or putting a cap between the 120 ohm resistor to ground on
each. Maybe there is a simpler mod. What small amount of stray RF I have in
the shack is not hot and is easily handled by all my rigs and other auto
antenna tuners. The KAT100-1 works perfectly if I can just get the display to
work right (especially on 30 meters). I would like to focus on what can be
done to the tuner and not the antenna or ground. Surely someone can come up
with a fix for this. Roy Morris W4WFB

[Elecraft] SSB Low Output

2004-11-22 Thread Unifiedtx
I have found the best way to get additional gain from the KSB2 is to add the
KSB2 INCREASED GAIN MOD by KI6WX as well as the other KI6WX KSB2 mods.
These mods can be found on the Elecraft site. Be sure the mike input is
biased
correctly first. Roy Morris W4WFB

[Elecraft] KAT100 LEDs Gone Wild

2004-11-20 Thread Unifiedtx
I thought that installing MCU1.05 there would be ample RF sampling rates
taken to avoid erratic LED displays. The updated firmware seems not to be the
solution.
With a 50 ohm dummy load on the KAT100 output only the leftmost LED lights
up and K2 SWR is 1:1 regardless of power or band in use. With the Carolina
Windom 80 attached to the KAT100 output and a Bird 43 wattmeter between the K2
output and KAT100 input, I found the reflected power stayed at zero and the
forward power stayed at max (regardless of band or power setting) while the
KAT100 LEDs and K2 SWR reading were going wild. The wildest LED and SWR
activity occurs on 30 meters but does not occur on all bands.
I have already removed the white wire from pin 7 of the K2 end of the IO
port and put a .01 pF cap from the white wire to the bare wire on pin 1.
My shack is on the second floor (over my garage) and I have tried to be as
attentive to grounding as possible. I use a common grounding point that
attaches to a 1/2 copper pipe (used only for grounding) that goes down approx
 10
feet to an eight foot buried grounding rod. I believe the K2 erratic SWR
activity will stop when the KAT100 LED stray RF problem has been eliminated.
Has anyone made any changes or done any bypassing inside the KAT100 to
eliminate stray RF and tame the LED display? Roy Morris W4WFB

[Elecraft] DSP on 60 Meters

[Elecraft] K6XX Visible CW Tuning Indicator

2004-11-12 Thread Unifiedtx
Tom Hammond, N0SS, has done a really nice job with this kit. The SMT parts
are encapsulated in a sealed plastic strip. The parts are removed from the
strip in the order they are used. The board is well laid out and is of good
quality. Tom says he only has about 15 kits ($17pp) remaining that are not
spoken for and will supply the PC board only (and a list of Mouser and Digikey
part
#'s) in the future.
I was hesitant in ordering an SMT project, but quickly discovered that SMT
soldering is not so daunting! The same temperature controlled soldering
station
(such as WTCPT) used to construct the K2 can be used with a conical tip to
construct this project. With real care I was able to use .032 dia. 60/40
solder.
 (Smaller diameter is recommended)
I discovered some really nice features of this tuning indicator... the 10th
LED still functions as an S meter digit in receive, and it also functions in RF
and ALC positions in transmit. I found the offset can be visually found
within 10 Hz very quickly.
Thanks to Tom for producing this nice kit. I have no monitary interest in
Weller or this project. Roy Morris W4WFB

[Elecraft] Recommended Switching Supply

2004-09-26 Thread Unifiedtx
This may be a bias on my part, but I remember the first switching supplies
that came out. They were full of hash which gave them a bad name. Switchers
are no doubt better now, but they still are capable of putting out hash
(depending on your shack and antenna environment). I personally like the
Astron
linear supplies. I have four, and they have all worked well over many years.
If
the supply is used only on the bench, a linear supply is the way to go. Just
keep it a couple of feet away from the K2. Roy Morris W4WFB

[Elecraft] Antenna Suspension

2004-09-09 Thread Unifiedtx
I am using a Carolina Windom 80 suspended with 3/16 nylon rope through
stainless steel eyehooks up 50' between two large oak trees. These trees are
approx 123 feet apart. Because I am located in hurricane alley and subject to
high
winds, I would like to remove the permanent tiedown on one of the trees and
tie a weight to the rope. I would like to know how much weight should be used.
What kind of weight (how many bricks or what-have-you). Thanks. Roy Morris

[Elecraft] K2 ALC Anomaly Using PTT

2004-08-29 Thread Unifiedtx
Anyone who uses a K2/100 with a linear needs to know that the K2 ALC does not
kick in if PTT is used and the K2 display is in the RF mode. This can cause
the input to the linear to be overdriven. This condition can also cause the
K2 output not to be linear. It is necessary to put the K2 in ALC mode to
activate the ALC in PTT. Once the ALC has been activated, it can be changed
back
to the RF mode. If the K2 display is in the RF mode when using PTT, it is
necessary to access the ALC mode each time the sideband or band is changed.

[Elecraft] Firmware Upgrade

2004-06-21 Thread Unifiedtx
Within the last three or four months I upgraded all firmware chips for my 3
year old K2/100/KAT100-1 (so I could do the CW bandwidth mod and install the 60

purchased a new KSB2 that has version 1.09. What does the 1.09 supposed to do
that
the 1.08b does not do? Thanks Roy Morris W4WFB
