"Someone asked me recently whether a KAT500 could be remote-controlled"

It wasn't me that asked but I have been considering using the KAT500 as a
remote tuner as I need higher power capability than my current MFJ-993BRT.
However, my approach was going to be to buy just the KAT500 board and
find/build a suitable enclosure. I'm a bit surprised Elecraft does not
offer the KAT500 board packaged as a weather resistant remote tuner.

As to needing AUX cable and keying interrupt -

  - KAT500 does not need AUX cable to operate but if you want to help it
along it's far better to give it the TX exact frequency rather than just the
band.

 - What other remote tuners provide keying interrupt? In any event,
the SWR seen at the remote tuner could be quite different from the SWR seen
at the amplifier and may not be a good indication of whether the amp should
be keyed.

The keying interrupt should be based on SWR seen at the amplifier output. I
actually already have that wired using my LP100A.

As the real resistance grows larger compared with the radiation resistance,
then more of the power is converted to heat in the real resistance rather
than radiated as RF.

Email / Messaging options?
This isn't Elecraft-specific but I do use my KX3 for this.

I am looking into EMCOMM email and message store/forward systems.

I am already using Winlink on HF with both the Winmor protocol and an SCS
PTC Pactor modem and those are working FB.

I am considering putting up an HF BBS-like system that multiple users could
use to store (and possibly forward) messages between multiple users.

I used to do packet on VHF/UHF 20 or so years ago but have never done HF
packet, Amtor, etc. and wondered what options there are today?

My goal is to build 3 or 4 HF turnkey systems using low-cost HF
transceivers, modems or ?, simple portable antennas, etc.  The
lighter/smaller/more agile the better.

Any suggestions for a simple message system using efficient protocols on HF?

And, based on the success of this research, I might look into providing
systems to deploy in the bush for remote missionaries, etc.  Any
suggestions or direction to existing systems (keeping low budgets in mind)
would be appreciated.

Thx + 73,
Charlie

Thanks Rick and John,

I asked the question because I have just bought the K3/0 Mini remote and I
would like to be able to turn ON and OFF the KAT500 when I am about 1 thousand
miles away. I know that I can do control the on.off on the  KPA500 by
connecting the  8 pin line on the 15 pin ACC connector on the KPA500 to pin 11,
I was hoping that there would be an undocumented way for the KAT500.

But you can via the utility, if that can apply to your needs.

Clint,
Your brother will find it easier to revise the 518 Khz NavText
messages - which are transmitted every 6 hours (if memory serves me
correct). They are a simply RTTY format. I tried for long time to get HF
WeFAX to work - but the number of stations transmitting it are extremely few
and far between. They are more local +/- 1500 kms (more than enough for
coastal use). There are some small black boxes available which do this - for
< $200 - which may be worth looking at.

Should you want a more high-tech solution then I would recommend a Pactor 3
Modem (alas not cheap), an HF Radio and a small laptop (or Raspberry Pi) -
and connect to a mail server using SailMail - and receive a GRIB file -
which allows you to do much better weather modelling than some nasty Fax
every did. It takes less than 90 seconds to receive the GRIB files (assuming
you are not taking masses of data like wave height etc).

Subject: [Elecraft] OT: K3 and High Tension Wires
Greetings all.

We are considering moving to a location that is more friendly to ham radio
and especially the performance of my K3.  Here in our crowded neighborhood,
I have regular S7 noise levels on all the lower HF bands.  One home we
found (and like) sits fairly close to high tension wires (ie like one lot
away) however its in a much more rural area and likely to be more quite
w.r.t. the usual man-made RF hash.

Does anyone have any experience with living very close to high tension
wires (not tool close, plenty of room for wire antennas without any
danger.)  Assuming nothing is "broken" is it likely to produce RF noise in
the receiver?  Is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks, and replies off list are appreciated to avoid the wrath of the list
moderator

Regards,

Chris

Chuck,
Like many others today, I, too, have some rather severe antenna restrictions.
Before you give up on getting on the air with your K2 or K3, consider a
"screwdriver" antenna. I use a Tarheel mounted on a metal tripod with caster
wheels. I can roll it out onto the driveway when needed. It works surprisingly
well.

60M LPF??? Last I looked, the US power limit on 60M is 100W relative to
a half wave dipole.

The LPF is on the output of the amplifier. One possible cause of failure
could be lightning.

My only experience with an ALS-600 was at a contest station in PJ4
several years ago. I found it to be a really inferior amp - most of the
time, I was lucky to get 300W out if it. No comparison to a KPA500.

Kpa500 on 60 is illegal unless you have a *measured and documented* VERY lossy
antenna that would reduce the effective radiated power to the same as 100 watts
on a dipole. The simple 99 percent answer is that on 60m SHUT OFF the Kpa500
and run 100 watts barefoot.

Yes, I agree and complained, they said the repair was discounted by $200.

The amp is 2 years old.

I am seriously thinking about selling while there is a bit of a warranty and
buying the SPE 1.2KA amp.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 troubles

2015-11-12 Thread W4GRJ
Eric,

Thank you for your response. I did send a message to Wayne for his review,
so I don't want to cause

double efforts on this..I appreciate the review.

Since I do live in a active lightning area, I have a well grounded station
and polyphaser surge protection.

Coax is grounded when not in use.. possible but I don't think it was
lightning related.

In 15 years at this QTH I have never had a lightning issue with my station
or anything in the house.

Thanks Again,

Jack

Hi Jack,

I apologize for any consternation this has caused you.

Since multiple components burned through the LPF PC board, that is major
damage and would require replacement of the whole LPF board, which is a
major cost component of the amp. (Taking out this board and replacing it
requires disassembly and reassembly of a major portion off the amp.) The
repair cost also includes the tech time to diagnose, disassemble, repair,
reassemble, retest and do full production TX burn-in of the amp on all
bands.

Component failure like this can occur in any manufacturer's radio or
amplifier for many reasons, such as power line surges, nearby lightning
strikes, operating with excessive SWR, transmitting into a wrong antenna
etc. You do not need to be operating on a particular band, or even have the
amp or radio on to incur lightning damage. This can also cause partial
damage to components that then shows up as a failure later after additional
operation.

As a side note, every year during lightning season we see a significant
increase in all sorts of 'interesting' repairs sent in to us on all of our
products. Many times the user is not even aware that a strike occurred
somewhere nearby while they still had their antennas connected.

I'll review your repair report with our techs to make sure we didn't over
charge for anything. I'll also check to see if they mis-identified which
band the destroyed LPF components were from.

Eric

When discussed with Craig at Elecraft he could not explain the failure, just

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 troubles

2015-11-11 Thread W4GRJ
Got the KPA500 back from Elecraft.
Problem found: L22 and other components in the 60M low pass filter circuit
burnt through the LPF PCB.
Repair $650 later: Replaced low pass filter module and installed QSK mod.

On the phone I asked what caused the failure, answer was no idea other than
component failure.
I understand stuff fails but I thought I would get more than 2 years before
a major expensive failure.

Previously had a Ameritron ALS-600 for 5+ years never a problem, sold it to
purchase the KPA500.

Sometimes the grass is not greener.

TR Switch Rework REV5 modification, Elecraft parts kit: E850607. But maybe
there is another issue in your case.

Try to read first then decide. If you want and you have SMD tools then You can
try to make this mods first and test if it was the case. If not then you can
send to Elecraft service. If you have no SMD tools and experiences then it is
better to send it to them now. The people at Elecraft service are great and
professional so no worry about.

It is not complicated just a bit tight on the board and not so much space
around the parts to remove the old one. Must be done very carefully. I made
this mod on KPA500 for two friends already and in both cases amps worked well
after that.

Hope it helps.

Re: [Elecraft] Home and portable antenna issues.....

2015-03-09 Thread W4GRJ
I have been where you are and then some ... Long story short, after trying
almost every portable antenna I have what I think is a wonderful, simple
solution. I take little Tarheel II screwdriver antenna and mount it on a short
sturdy camera tripod with a few ground radials. It works almost as good as my
102' long wire and is amazingly quiet. I got the antenna mount for the tripod
on EBay. It works great, takes 5 minutes to set up.
Good luck

Hello all,

I am a relatively new KX3 user. So far I love the radio but I have had
some issues getting on the air. Almost all have been related to finding a
good portable and primarily a good home antenna. I've tried a number of
solutions and have yet to find one that works well.

I currently live in a townhouse – ground floor with a walking path looping
around the building. This means any antenna I use at home must
include a “cloak
of invisibility” – or reasonable facsimile or be able to be moved inside
during daylight hours.

For portable use I have tried the Alexloop antenna – it works fairly well
portable but is not a practical solution for home use since my outdoor
patio is 20ft away from my radio and tuning is simply not practical.

For portable I have also tried the Buddipole- works okay but it is heavy
for portable and changing coil settings at home isn't practical for same
reason as tuning the Alexloop. I like the quality of construction on the
Buddipole.

My latest test involves the Chameleon Hybrid-mini base with various
assorted whips (SGC303/ Buddipole long whip, etc). Although highly
portable the noise threshold seems very high and the reception is mediocre.
I have not tried the Chamelon whips yet but I am a bit skeptical that it
will make much difference. I have read good reviews on eHam so I am
wondering if there is a special trick to getting the Chameleon to perform
as advertised. Anyone have experience with these antennas?

So …..Not sure where to go from here.

I am looking for advice on the current solutions I have or recommendations
on something I have not tried yet.

My main concern with portable use is weight. My main concern with home use
is low visibility and also needing an antenna that works well close to
the ground since I'm in a ground floor condo.

I have debated playing around with wire (thin) loops since I have access to
an SGC 230 and 237 tuner.

I would love to know what has worked for others.

Thanks for the help.

drain to a projected cut-off. I doubt that the internal resistance is

important and they were replaced on a strict schedule, however good or bad they
might be in use - a bit like alarm batteries and such like. I know amateur

Which has nothing to do with this application. A boat is like a car. In

[Elecraft] KPA Utility

2013-11-20 Thread w4grj

Recently connect a new KPA500 KAT500 to my K3.

When running the utility programs, the KPA500 utility shuts down when I
select firmware tab.

The KAT500 program works fine.

Any ideas why the KPA Utility quits when the firmware tab is selected?

Tnx,

Jack

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - using Clear Speech Speaker

2013-08-31 Thread W4GRJ
I have the GAP Hear It on my K3 and in the car. I have the Clear Speech on my
boat with a Icom M802. I find they reduce substantially the background noise.
It is particularly helpful in the car and on the boat but I also love it in my
shack.

How do you get around the relearn time of the DSP speaker when switching

Keith,
I have been using a Clear Speech AND an SGC ADSP simultaneously with a fixed
K3 at my home base for several years. Basically, I leave it on 'ALL THE
TIME'. It reduces 'ear fatigue' from extraneous noise and makes the whole
experience inviting to have long casual 'rag chews' even between continents.
Whenever I turn off the extra signal processing to reset the K3 settings to
best performance, I inevitably turn it back on again, because the difference
is so dramatic. Strong signals sound like local FM and weak signals are
sometimes readable with the outboard DSP, while impossible without it.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do.

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - using Clear Speech Speaker

I have used the Gap Hear It and SGC ADSP2 speakers, which are very
similar, and they have their advantages. I prefer the SGC because of it's
ease of switching between 0db, -13db or -26db noise reduction with a single
switch.

I use the SGC on 6M, when I want to monitor 50.125 USB continuously. I put
it in the -26dB mode and all the static is gone, so I just wait for voices
to show up. Unfortunately it makes everything sound like water dripping,
which can be a little annoying. The GAP is either on or off, and you are
constaly messing with the switches on the back of it to change the level.

Generally the DSP speakers have a slight delay, which can be a problem.
Every time you switch from transmit to receive, the DSP speaker has to
relearn its parameters, so the first 1/2 second or so is without DSP. It is
amazing how often this is the other call you are trying to pick out, which
is obliterated by the initial switch-over noise.

I have a K3, and have not found it's DSP to be particulary useful. Usually
by the time I need to use the NR on the K3, the signal I am listening to is
too far gone for it to really help much.

One of their advertisements is to take a marine radio which was subjected to
salt water with the case off .now not working. Then, submerge in a bucket

You could lightly spray the interior of the K3 before going on the DX

No, you can not monitor your xmit signal with the P3, at this time. There is
an unused cutout on the rear panel of the P3 labeled sensor. many of us
hope this will be for an optional internal board and external sensor to
allow the P3 to operate as a station monitor on TX.

Some people have noted that if you disconnect the RS232 cable between the P3
and the K3, you can see a signal on the P3 during TX. This is due to IF
leakage into the P3, and is not a reliable indicator of your actual transmit
signal. You can see the effect of TX equalization settings on a transmitted
signal's bandwidth, but you are not looking at an accurate representation of
the actual RF output of the radio.

Sorry for the long-winded reply, but that's the current state of affairs (as
I understand it).

Yes, of course, but that is not in the least surprising. The question
is: Why doesn't RMS Express work properly in DATA A mode? This is
precisely the kind of application that DATA A was intended for.

In all this time with K3 #24, I've never been stymied by any issue

I'm a Navy-Marine Corps MARS member. We use RMS Express in the WL2K

 1.1.3.0.

I also use LP Bridge to create two COM ports: one used for DTR (PTT)
and the other for control, COM19 and COM20 respectively. The sound
 card is an EMU 0202.

The problem is this: When RMS Express takes control of the K3,
calling an RMS node on HF *always* results in the receive frequency
being 1.5 KHz too high. I've had to rotate the RIT between call-up
transmissions to get the RX on frequency before the initial 5 attempts
time out. The TX frequency seems dead-on, because the RMS always
answers - but RX is 1.5 KHz high. And yes, I've tested with multiple
RMS nodes, including my own NMCM RMS here at the shack. Same problem
occurs with each, so it's a setup issue with software or the K3 here.

RMS Express sends the following commands after it's set the COM20 comm
 parameters:

FR0;# cancel split
RT0;# RIT OFF
XT0;# XIT OFF
MD6;# TX DATA mode
DT0;# DATA A sub-mode of TX DATA

The sequence above is sent once at the beginning of an RMS Express
call-up of the remote node. Only COM19's DTR is used to assert PTT
 for transmissions.

Just for grins, I checked the various meta-modes the K3 is in. I
discovered that even though AI is set to ZERO, I'm still getting IF
annunciations back from the K3. Odd, that.

K31;# K3 extended commands enabled
K22;# K2 extended
AI0;# AUTOINF OFF

Since split and the incremental controls are off and ZEROed, I'm
totally blind to what's going on. VFO A is on the correct frequency
in each case (for each RMS Node), which means to me that RX and TX
actual frequencies should be the same.

 Any ideas what's causing this?

existing alternative with advantages (besides 1kw) over the KPA 500. Namely
a built in antenna tuner in addition to power supply. The spec says it tunes
3:1 but mine will match 5.5:1 automatically and close to 10:1 manual mode.
Very compact (W 11.02, H 5.51, D 12.60) see all the specs

However, the 1K-FA is not suitable for outdoor application.

Dale,

Just for reference, my experience with the K3 NR is outstanding. I cannot
notice any reduced volume on the tuned signal. The NR on my K3 does a great

Wayne,

I am going to disagree - I think its a real issue, and an area for K3
improvement. While I have not been to Jim's shack to hear what he is
hearing, it sounds like what I have always observed, at least for SSB
reception. Engaging the NR significantly reduces the overall audio level.

When I engage the NR on my MkV or FT-847, the band noise drops away, but the
perceived volume of the monitored voice stays about the same. It is rare
that I need to touch the volume control. Yaesu NR is reasonably effective
for turning a marginal signal into something that can be copied, and turning
a strong signal with high band noise into something more pleasant to listen
to.

On the K3, engaging the NR in SSB drops both the noise and the apparent
voice level substantially, requiring that the volume control be turned up [a
lot] to copy the voice. But then the noise is also increased.
Frequently it feels like the NR has done little to no good, but it is hard
to tell. Perhaps the ratio between the band noise and the desired signal is
improved, but overall I would say its not. Or not very much.

The NR difference on SSB between the K3 and the Yaesu products I have used
is large, and the K3 loses. It is the _only_ K3 feature I find which is
sub-par, and only for SSB - NR for CW seems much more effective.

Some drop in apparent volume level is typical with NR. Part of the

You might also try setting F5-1. Settings from F5-x to F8-x use a

 Thank you.

Subject: [Elecraft] Your suggestions for AMP for K2 QRP unit

Hi All,
The new EC 500 amp coming out will require the KPA-100 PA for K2 users.

I am interested in adding an amp that can run from the K2 without the
KPA-100.
I don't care about QSK, I can switch the amp ON and OFF XMIT manually or
I can build an interface that will switch the amp from the K2 AUX line.

However, I will be locating the amp in a remote room (not located at in
the shack room) so I will want an amp that I can perhaps build a wired
control for band selections.

It would be better if it does not have a built in tuner.
But since it will be remote, I will need a unit that will not require
direct controling of band switching, tuning etc.

Also, it must be able to output at least 200 watts CW all bands.

Your suggestions very welcome.
Thanks
Duane

Hi all,
I will be QRV starting from tomorrow with a KX1 within my spare time
from paddling a sea kayak along the Italian coasts in Calabria and
Puglia. I'll use my home callsign /I8 and /I7. That will realize my
dream of joining HamRadio and seakayaking doing free nautical
camping. Power will be supplied by a 12V 7A Gell battery, loaded
during daytime by a solar panel and antenna will be a piece of wire
strung between the paddles and somewhat I'll find.
I'll confirm all qso's via the bureau and LOTW.
Copy all you.
Ciao

Yes, it will. You'll likely get more than 100 watts but less than 200
watts output with 10 watts of drive. If you want the full 500+ watts,
then you'll probably need 30W to 40W of drive.

Re: [Elecraft] Re Vertical for portable use

2010-08-02 Thread W4GRJ
I have had excellent results using the Chameleon V1 antenna for portable use
http://www.chameleonantenna.com . We first used it in February when we
helped out in Haiti. It covered 3.5 to 500Mhz. Used it on HF MARS freqs,
2mtrs and even used it to extend the range of the GMRS radios we used around
the field hospital at the airport. You can see the Haiti installation in
one of the pics at the bottom of this article
http://www.arrl.org/news/amateur-radio-operators-provide-communications-supp
ort-in-haiti

For portable/emergency use, I am now using two V1 antennas as a vertical
dipole. This avoids the need to use counterpoise wires. Makes for a very
easy, fast antenna to set up. Also, we have very successfully used a single
V1 on a 42' sailboat mounted on the cabin.

QUESTION:
this is a solo dxpedition, I am 75 years old. the antenna farm will most
likely be vertical and located right at the shore line.

What suggestions do you have for me to construct for antennas?

Susan

Susan,

Without details like the bands you want to use and which bands are most
important, it is difficult to answer.

Most answers you will get will probably be based on manufacturing
advertisements and feelings rather than how things really work.
Manufacturers through their advertisements have largely brainwashed us as a
group on antennas. :-)

The Butternut HF6V and Hustler 6BTV are about at the top of the all-band
gain (80-10 meters) and have nearly identical performance. They both are
trap verticals, although one of them pretends it does not have traps.

[Elecraft] VFO B with VFO A

Is there any way to use memory for VFO A only without changing the freq set
in VFO B ?
