I’m right handed but decided I’d use a paddle left handed fore ease of taking
notes. In my case I left the paddle sense alone (dahs on right paddle) to
facilitate sharing without reversing. Didn’t see how this would be harder and
it hasn’t been.

Re: [Elecraft] Split operation - display of Transmit frequency on keydown

2015-02-17 Thread Will Ravenel
I use MacLoggerDX for my logging program and it automatically applies split to
my K3 when selecting a frequency that is spotted as working split. Works great
for hunting DX but you’re on your own again in a contest where using spotting
aids is not allowed. In this case I’ve become accustomed to looking for the VFO
B marker in the P3 display to be sure I’ve got split applied.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 Kit display back light

2014-03-12 Thread Will Ravenel
I've also installed the backlight retrofit and did not find it particularly
difficult - just a little tedious. The tedious part is removing the remnants of
the old LED pins and cleaning the holes after snipping the LED off.

It helps to have a good solder sucker and braid. Just put on some soothing
music, take your time, follow the directions, and try not to breathe too much
of the solder fumes.

Jim,

It is obvious that you understand how the K3 works and that the use of a 700 Hz
filter doesn't match your operating style. It is just as obvious to me that
some other operators, also with very good understandings of the K3, find it
useful.

Can't we just chalk it up to personal preference without insulting those who
like to listen with a broader bandwidth than you but still would like the
protection a roofing filter provides against strong signals outside that
bandwidth?

Re: [Elecraft] Firmware

2013-07-28 Thread Will Ravenel
Thank you, Wayne. The APF - 1Hz tuning glitch was the last little nuisance on
my list for the way I operate the KX3. Certainly not a major flaw. More of a
minor inconvenience. Seeing it addressed is unlike anything I've experienced as
a consumer.

The technology company where I used to work chose for their motto: Flawless
execution - continuous improvement. Many of us realized that this was nonsense
- if you truly have flawless execution, continuous improvement would not be
necessary. Few, if any, designs are flawless - even those from Elecraft. But I
believe that you guys surpass all others in your industry at continuous
improvement. Keep up the good work. It's much appreciated.

The KX3 has had this feature since day one. When I asked about it Wayne

[Elecraft] [KX3] OFS/VFO B Knob Muting in Text Decode

2012-09-20 Thread William Ravenel
I searched the archives and could not find reference to the following issue
I've observed on my KX3:

I don't normally use the text decode feature but was playing with it today and
noticed that rotating the OFS/VFO B knob after setting TEXT DECODE resulted in
strong muting of the receiver. The muting appears to be related to the knob
rotation rather than the specific setting selected. I first noticed it when
changing from TX ONLY to RX THR1 but experimentation revealed that even turning
the knob counterclockwise while displaying DEC OFF would mute the receiver. It
sometimes took rotation through two settings such as from TX ONLY to RX THR2,
or counterclockwise through two clicks while on DEC OFF to mute. Once muted
the receiver remained muted as the knob was rotated and could only be corrected
by unsetting and re-setting TEXT DECODE or tapping ATU TUN. The muting occurs
even when the ATU is bypassed or when NOT INST is selected. This requires
cycling power to recover normal receive levels. The muting is severe, with the
resulting audio level between the normal ATT 20db redu
ction and disconnecting the antenna. Setting ATT while muted has no effect on
audio level. I hear a popping noise in the audio with every selection of the
OFS/VFO B knob when in TEXT DECODE mode only (no noise when rotating through
menu selections or any other mode that I have used).

Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone give me a suggestion as to what
might be the problem?

Thanks,

William, AI4VE

[Elecraft] [KX3] APF Tuning Rate

2012-08-23 Thread William Ravenel
Forgive me if this has been raised before. A quick search of the archives
didn't find it.

When tuning at a 10Hz rate, pushing the APF button changes the tuning rate to
the 1Hz rate, which is appropriate for the fine tuning required of the APF
feature. Pushing the APF button again changes back to the original 10Hz tuning
rate, as it should. I often prefer to tune CW slowly through the band at the
1Hz rate and frequently use the APF feature for weak signals. In this case when
I push the APF button the 1Hz rate is preserved. Pushing APF again to exit that
feature, however, changes the tuning rate to 10Hz requiring that I push the
rate button to return to the original 1Hz tuning.

Please add this to the list of minor inconveniences that should be fixed after
more pressing software mods are completed.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] K3 Utility won't run on OSX 10.7.4 (Lion)

2012-08-17 Thread William Ravenel
I recently upgraded to the Lion OS on a MacBook and downloading the latest Mac

Re: [Elecraft] Mac logging programs?

2011-09-29 Thread William Ravenel
Hi Cary,

The premiere general purpose logging program for the Mac is MacLoggerDX from
DogPark Software. It incorporates many features including rig control, DX
clusters and spotting, automatic beam steering, 2D or 3D map, and much more. It
is actively supported with frequent updates by Don Agros and costs $95 for a
single use license. I have been using it for five years and am very happy with
it.

RUMlog is a free program for the Mac that should be considered. It has become
quite popular and has incorporated more features over time. It's strengths
include enhanced tracking and management of qso's for various award pursuits.

RUMped is a DX-pedition and contesting logger specifically tailored to those
activities. It is also free.

jLog is another free program for the Mac. It's a pretty basic, simplified
logger without a lot of bells and whistles.

These are the programs that I'm aware of but I'm sure there are some others out
there. My descriptions above are brief and may not fully capture the value of
each program. I'm a MacLoggerDX user so I know more about it. You should check
all their web pages and read the reviews on eHam.net to decide which best meets
your needs.

When I built my K1 I actually installed a male connector in the wrong set of
holes and was able to successfully remove it without destroying it. I used a
large solder sucker (plunger type) and cleared one hole at at time. With a
little additional heating and wiggling I was able to pull the header free. I
was probably lucky not to have destroyed the board, but it worked.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT2 with EFHW antenna

2011-08-24 Thread William Ravenel
Steve Yates, AA5TB, has a very informative web page on EFHW antennas and how to
build a parallel tuned circuit with a link coupled feed at the radio end to
reduce the 1800 to 5000 ohm impedance to a 50 ohm non-reactive load. He has
examples of both QRP and QRO versions of the circuit. I built the QRP version
which uses a polyvaricon capacitor (available through Hendrix Kits among other
sources) to create a very small tuning device that will match resonant End Fed
half wavelength antennas on 40m, 30m, 20m, and 17m. I use it mostly with a 33
foot wire on 20m raised on a 31 foot Jackite fiberglass pole and have had fun
working DX with 5 watts. It is easy to change bands by exchanging the wire with
one cut for the band of interest. I do not use a counterpoise and do not have
any trouble at the rig. Steve explains why this works. For higher power a one
meter counterpoise helps. I use this antenna with a K1 and K2, both with
internal antenna tuners. The tuners are not needed, but I
leave them activated to easily compensate for any small mismatch across the
band.

Steve's page is found at http://aa5tb.com/efha.html

Re: [Elecraft] Iambic Keying (WAS: Straight key first?)

2011-06-30 Thread William Ravenel
I passed 13 wpm to pass General in the early 80s and never made a single CW QSO
- didn't even use a key to practice. But when I passed the no-code Extra in
2007 I decided to work CW until I could copy at least 20 wpm. Bought a paddle
and decided to learn to use it with my left hand so my dominant right hand
could take notes. I also decided to set the paddle up with dits on the left
since this appeared to be the way the majority of paddle users did it. This way
I could pass my paddle to most right handers and there would be no need to
reverse the sense of the paddle. Similarly, I could move most other's paddle
to the left side of the radio and jump right in. I've reached 20 wpm now and
wish I'd discovered the joy of CW sooner.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 lifespan

2011-03-24 Thread William Ravenel
If you are looking at a K2 fully fitted out with all options, then the
price may approach the basic K3, and the K3 becomes the better dollar
value
This was the reason that after building the K1 I changed my original plans to
follow with the K2 and bought a K3 kit instead. I love the K3. It's easily the
best transceiver I've ever owned (or probably ever will), but I missed the
build experience of the K1 and so after six months I ordered a K2/10. Although
the design is 10+ years old, sales are apparently still reasonably strong. That
said it, is a mature design and already some manufacture discontinued discreet
components have been replaced with SM circuit packs. I was worried that
continued K2 production would eventually not be economically feasible and
didn't want to miss out on building what I believe has become a true American
classic. I've added the Noise Blanker, analog Audio Filter, Tuner, and Battery
Pack which make the rig a joy to use in the field whether it's the back yard,
local park, or mountain top. No regrets - thank you, Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] What made you decide on purchasing an Elecraft transceiver?

2011-02-22 Thread William Ravenel
My story:

In the Spring of 2007, after a 20+ year hiatus from Ham Radio, I upgraded to
Extra. I was a little out of touch on current rigs and wanted something to get
started again. I ended up buying a Ten-Tec Argonaut V. I loved that rig for
it's silky QSK CW ability and compact size. Even at the bottom of the cycle
it's 20 watts was enough to work lots of DX with CW. The itch for more power
resulted in the purchase of a used Ten-Tec Jupiter in 2008 - a very nice rig
with typically fine Ten-Tec CW ability. After a very brief and less than
satisfactory foray into FLEX SDRs I turned my attention to Elecraft. By now I
was hearing lots of good things about Elecraft, their rigs, and their support.
I liked that Elecraft had it's roots in CW and QRP. I was impressed with the
K2 receiver specs compared to anything I had experienced and wondered just how
big a difference such a receiver would make. Since I wasn't confident enough to
jump right into the K2 construction, I bought a K1 in Septemb
er 2009 and had a blast building and using it. With the confidence gained from
building the K1, I decided to move up to the K2 but after looking at the K2
price with preferred options I decided that there wasn't a significant price
difference between a half loaded K2 and an entry K3. I decided that I just had
to experience a rig with top receiver specs to see the difference for myself,
so the Jupiter went on the block and I ordered a K3/10 kit with KAT3 in January
2010. What a difference! I ordered and installed the KPA3 in March. I was so
thoroughly happy with Elecraft and their rigs by now that I ordered a K2 and
KAT2 in August 2010. This purchase might be considered a step backwards by
some, but I wanted to enjoy the K2 build experience and a dedicated QRP K2 to
complement the 100W K3 made perfect sense to me. I've been drooling over the P3
and a KRX3 and think the second receiver will soon be my next addition.

To summarize: What made me decide on purchasing an Elecraft transceiver?

1) The enjoyment of building my own radios.
2) Top receiver specs at an affordable price.
3) Modularity that permits buying only what you need until you need more.
4) Life is too short not to buy and enjoy Elecraft equipment.

Thanks to Wayne, Eric, Lyle, et al - keep up the good work.

[Elecraft] K3 test mode

2010-10-17 Thread William Ravenel
Hasn't been a problem here but I have occasionally have trouble not holding the
tune button long enough and chang antennas instead. I usually catch it but
since I currently only use one antenna I've attached a dummy load to the
Antenna 2 connection to protect against accidentally tuning or transmitting
with no load. A variable length hold setting would be nice but not sure how
high on the list I'd place it.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] power supply question

2010-09-29 Thread William Ravenel
Dave,

The Powerwerx SS-30 is 5 x 2.5 x 6.75 inches (including the connectors on the
rear). It has two Powerpole connector pairs on the front and will handle 25 W
continuous/30 W intermittent. It might be a little big for the side pocket of
your bag based on the dimensions you provided but I don't know if you will get
much smaller in a 25A supply unless you go with the Gamma Research HPS-1a that
provides 5A continuous and 25A at a 25% duty cycle.

http://www.powerwerx.com/batteries-chargers/powerwerx-30-amp-desktop-switching-power-supply-powerpoles.html
http://www.gammaresearch.net/hps-1a.html

I bought the Powerwerx supply at Dayton this year and used it for 24hrs
straight at Field Day with my K3 working CW. It does have a fan that you can
hear, but I've heard a lot worse and didn't notice it with the background noise
at Field Day. The noise is noticeable in my shack, but I wear headphones most
of the time and that takes care of it.

[Elecraft] Question on KNB2 Build

2010-09-25 Thread William Ravenel
I'm building the KNB2 (Rev ER) module and instead of a 1500pF (152) capacitor
for C6 the kit included a 1000pF (102) capacitor. This is a small capacitor,
not like the larger 102s for C9, C11, and C13. Is the 1000pF cap an
acceptable substitute for the 1500pF cap at C6 or is this a packing error?

Thanks in advance for your support.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - small power supply 110-240VAC

2010-08-17 Thread William Ravenel
I picked up one of the PowerWerx supplies at Dayton this spring and used it for
Field Day. It powered my K3 for 24 hours of continuous use with no problems.
Have not found any spurs yet. It is amazingly small and portable but the fan
noise is noticeable. I don't find it objectionably loud, but it's not silent.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 on Order

2010-07-16 Thread William Ravenel
I bought a PowerWerx SS-30 at Dayton this year and used it at Field Day. It
powered my K3 for the entire 24 hours without any problem. No RF noise
detected. The fan noise is noticeable but not with headphones. Several people
commented on it's small size. Now I use it in the shack as my main power supply
since it takes up so little space on the desk.

Re: [Elecraft] K1 Alignment and Test Part I

2010-05-18 Thread William Ravenel
I had a similar problem when I built my K1. Same symptoms. I wish I could give
you a specific cure but in my case I touched up a large number of solder points
and the problem went away. None of the joints looked bad to my weak eyes, even
with a magnifier lamp, but one or more of them were apparently the problem.

Good luck.

Re: [Elecraft] Son of K3??

2010-05-15 Thread William Ravenel
I talked to a Kenwood rep at Dayton this morning. He said the TS-590 would have
the best receiver specs out there. I asked if it would beat the K3 and he said
the TS-590 would have the best receiver specs out there. The radio has an IF of
11MHz and two stock roofing filters - 2.8KHz and 500Hz - no spare slots and no
options. It will not have a second receiver or option for one. I remarked on
it's superficial similarity to the K3 and he said that the K3 had done some
things right and that they were not too proud to use them. Price is expected to
be $1800 and expected to be available in the fall. The model on display was an
operational hand-built prototype with some features disabled.

As a very happy K3 owner, if Kenwood can meet or slightly exceed the K3
receiver numbers with this radio then more power to them. It still won't match
the overall capability of the K3 and Kenwood certainly won't match the Elecraft
level of support. It might, however, attract users who are looking for a radio
with good specs at a mid-level price and without the complications (or
availability) of options.

[Elecraft] The no-serial port conundrum

2010-03-21 Thread William Ravenel
Another way to go is to buy the $40 Elecraft KUSB Serial to USB cable. DB9 on
one end and USB on the other. Single cable and works great.

Re: [Elecraft] OT Local QRN what is it?

2010-01-16 Thread William Ravenel
Bill,

I'm afraid it's not unique to your neighborhood. I've heard the same noise at
my station in NC. It doesn't match the treadmill example referred to (at least
at my QTH) because the roughly 3 KHz 'beat frequency' doesn't vary. When it's
there it is audible from about the 17m ham band continuously down through the
160m band. Like you I also hear it during the day but mostly on weekends since
I work during the week. I'd love to know what it is because when it's present I
may as well quit operating.
