[Elecraft] Band Data output?

2022-08-09 Thread dm4im

Elecrafters,
i control a 6*2 switch via a remoteqth.com Band Decoder II using RS-232
sniffing mode. Not happy with that. I like to switch to Band Data output
from the 15-pin sub-D ACC connector, but am a bit confused.

The band decoder manual shows connections labeled BCD-1 through BCD-4.
The K3 manual labels it's outputs Band0 OUT through BAND3 OUT.
What goes where?
Thanks.

[Elecraft] Diversity RX with K3 + Sub RX

2022-06-29 Thread dm4im

Elecrafters,
i recently bought a used K3 with Sub RX and KAT3A internal ATU. I've
enjoyed Diversity via SUB RX on my older K3, but never had the bells and
whistles of the ATU.
So with -say- a vertical Antenna attached to Ant1 and a Dipole to Ant2,
i can receive Diversity (if distance between them is sufficient) . Can i
assign TX to Ant2 and still receive Diversity? Is there a macro for that?

[Elecraft] KXV3 fails to switch on XV144

2011-02-27 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
i need your help for this problem:

While our club's K3 switches on my external 2m-transverter,
my own K3 fails.

I checked for differences in config, found none.

XV1 ON
XV1 ADDR trn1
KXV3 nor
TX INH OFF

I suspect i killed something on the KRX3-module.

If i jumper XV144 for a non-Elecraft rig, i can work with the
transverter .

HW?

[Elecraft] K3 and CW-Skimmer

2011-02-23 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
i know this is not the right place - and off topic- , but i hope for a
quick solution to the problem without the need to subscribe to yet
another forum.

Problem:
I set up CW-Skimmer / LPPan / K3 .
When i click on a signal i see on the waterfall, the K3 jumps to that
frequency. In some cases i then hear and see the signal exactly where i
expected it, in other cases the signal shows up in a different place on
the waterfall. I tried to compensate for that offset per the manual ,
but i just don't understand the mechanism behind it. The manual says
24000 ( might be 2400 as well - i don't have cw-skimmer on _this_ pc )
is a good starting point, but that seems to be _far_ off.

Any one?

[Elecraft] Prolific driver

2011-01-30 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
i have a Prolific USBserial Adapter for a laptopK3 connection.
While the installation (installation? what installation?) under Ubuntu
was just plugplay, win7 32bit drives me nuts.
The installer exe from the Prolific website crashed with an error.

So for now i use a usb 1.1 driver dated 2003 which a friend sent me.
But i think this Adaptor is capable of USB2.0, so here is my question:

Has anyone out there in radioland managed to install the latest prolific
driver and is willing to dig in his system for the files i need an send
them to me? They should be named

serenum.sys and ser?pl.*

where ? is one more letters/figures and * is for .sys .inf .vxd.
The files should be in the windows\system32\drivers folder.
They are a few tens of kilobyte in size.

I'm not sure if i have any advantage with USB 2.0,
but heck

[Elecraft] K3: Hears stations twice

2010-12-24 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
i tune across 80m and hear UN8GV calling cq on 3514.5 loud and clear.
As I tune further down i hear UN8GV deep in the noise exactly 3 khz
below, on 3511.5. Bad TX, i think.

But wait ... someone is calling him. After a few minutes, a few stations
create a pileup. I can hear each and every station deep in
the noise on 3511.5 and loud and clear on 3514.5 .
No matter if i use the Main RX only or the Main and SUB.

Huh?

I tried to duplicate this on different frequencies, with different
stations, but no luck.

Anyone has experienced this?

A merry christmas to all

[Elecraft] Firmware failed to load, again

2010-11-16 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
when updating to 4.22 , DSP1 again failed to load.
DSP1 is skipped, the Utility proceeds with DSP2.

I need to start a second run with only DSP1 checked
to complete the update.
This happened with 4.17, 4.18 and 4.22.

Otherwise the radio works 'as advertised'

I installed the K3DSPLPF recently.

Anyone experience this?

Radio is K3 # 2878
SUB RX

Utility is the latest Linux version.
Real serial connection (ttyS0), no USB.

[Elecraft] 4.17 failed to load on first attempt

2010-11-03 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,

I noticed that when the K3Utility loaded the new firmware, it skipped to
load DSP1. MCU and DSP1 were labeled N/A. The SUB-RX was ON at that time.
After the Utility had finished I power-cycled the K3.
MCU then was labeled 4.17, DSP1 still N/A.
I then loaded just DSP1 with the SUB-RX OFF. All ok now.
Wew!

K3Utility is the Linux version.

I am listening to 5R8X on 80m with the APF and am VERY impressed.
Thanks Elecraft.

[Elecraft] Anderson Power Poles?

2010-06-28 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
i was looking for Anderson power poles on the Ham Radio Fair in
Friedrichshafen, DL.
I found two dealers, both of them sold the Power Poles WITHOUT the pin
that goes between the two housings. They said the poles were shipped
without them and they´d never seen them and i must be wrong blah blah.

Are they really no longer shipped with the pins or do these german
dealers sell asia-made copies?

I could have asked Wayne at his booth, but he had a lot of traffic.

Re: [Elecraft] DC-supply for a preamp?

2010-04-28 Thread DM4iM
Hello all,
thank you for all the info about losses in a coax cable,
but the original question was if this is a good or a bad idea.
Lots of qsb, so it disappeared in the noise. :-)

I've been thinking about it myself, my conclusion is: no good idea.
Even if the K3 passes the supply voltage to it's antenna jack, bad
things can happen if you forget to switch the supply off, when you
change antennas, switch to your dummyload, you name it.
So it is a big NONO.

ACC Pin 10 is a low power (10 ma. max) copy of the KEYOUT connector on

So yes, the K3 pulls this pin to ground during transmit, and it should
work well for keying a transverter.

[Elecraft] K3: Power not restored when swapping A/B and back

2010-02-15 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
I intend to hook up an external XVTR, so i tried this: I set one VFO to
a 2m-frequency and PWR to the Milliwatt-range, set the other VFO to a
shortwave band and PWR to - say - 100 Watts, then swap A/B to make the
shortwave band VFO B and 2m VFO A.
When swapping the shortwave band back to A, the high PWR is not
restored. Holding XMIT outputs the preset PWR, 10 Watts in my case.
To restore PWR i need to crank up the PWR-knob from Milliwatts to high
PWR or use PFx.

FW 3.76
KXV3A
No Tuner

Other observation: When i switch on TEXT DECODE in CW, the AGC acts
slower. Is this intended? I can't speak for other modes, i haven't tried
yet.

[Elecraft] Kenwood HS-5

2010-01-16 Thread DM4iM
The Kenwood HS-5 headphones are designed for radio communications and
sound very good with the K3.
They are mono but it is easy to convert them to stereo.
The cord has 3 wires: ground, left speaker, right speaker.
Left and right speakers are wired together in the mono plug AND in the
earpiece where the cord goes in.
Open the earpiece: Use a tool that won't leave scratches on the
earpiece. Pry off the perforated metal cover being careful not to damage
it. Pry off the plastic cover, it is held in place by 2 clamps. You will
feel where they are. Use gentle force.
Cut the red wires off the speaker, solder them together then insulate them.
Leave the white and black wires in place. I would not solder the red
wire off, it is too big a danger to unsolder the very very thin wire
going from the PCB to the innards of the speaker. Re-assemble.
Replace the Mono-plug with a stereo plug. Solder the black wire to the
ground ring. Red wire to tip and white wire to the middle ring, or vice
versa, depending on which side you like to have the right channel AND
on which side you like to have the cord.

You'll be rewarded with plenty of audio and good sound.

[Elecraft] Icom SM-8 U/D buttons?

2010-01-08 Thread DM4iM
List,
According to the Icom SM-8 Desktop Microphone manual, there is only 1
wire for the Up and Down buttons.
So i suspect Icom feeds a positive voltage for up and a negative voltage
for down (or vice versa).
How to adapt this to make it work with K3?
I had good audio reports so far.

Elecrafters,
thanks a lot for all the input.

Not only did we discuss the filters, we also discussed on shift, width

The different approaches to eliminate qrm *and* keep the signals

I learned a lot.

Re: [Elecraft] Filters for K3

2009-12-28 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters, thanks for all the input.
I had many replies, personal mail or via the reflector.

To sum it up:

Matched filters are important for diversity.

8 votes for the 1.8khz, 4 for the 2.1 ssb filter for contesting.
Some use the 1.8khz ssb filter for cw, with the dsp set to narrower
bandwith. I think i will order one of those, it makes sense to use it
for cw-operation on a quiet band and in ssb contests when things get rough.

The 200hz and 250hz cw filters got an equal number of votes, you left me
alone on this ;-)

The expense on 2 matched 5 pole or 2 8-pole filters is about the same,
so the criteria here is performance.

May i call for a run-off?

Thanks to all es HNY

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Noisy K3 receiver

2009-12-19 Thread DM4iM
Gentlemen,
i played with AGC THR on 2 different K3's this afternoon.
To me both sound more pleasant with AGC THR 2 on strong signals.
But digging out the weak ones becomes difficult, the signal sounds mushy.
Try it, change AGC THR while listening to a very weak ssb-signal.
It becomes more and more readable the closer you get to 5, the default.
The signal stands out, even though the noise is higher.
YMMV

[Elecraft] K3 strange rx noise

2009-11-27 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters, i had a strange noise on 80m ssb last night and the night
before. When tuning up the band, the noise set in at exactly 3.686.000
like someone had flipped a switch.
It went away at -say- 3.692.xxx, i can't remember exactly.
When tuning in the opposite direction, it set in 1 or 2 khz below the
frequency where it stopped when tuning upwards, and went away when
tuning below 3.686.000, again like with the flip of a switch. I could
repeat that several times.
It sounded like a totally overloaded frontend.
Like the bandfilter was bypassed. Like the whole 80m-band was received
in that small portion of the band. I heard cw, ssb, harsh noise, all
over this small frequency range, even on a single frequency, no matter
where i tuned.
It imediatelly went away when i switched ON the sub-rx, and IT STAYED
AWAY when i switched the sub-rx OFF again. All back to normal, with
some stations ragchewing in that portion of the band.
This is the best i can describe it with my limited knowledge of the
english language.
I could not get the K3 to do it again. It seems like the K3 was stuck in
a weird condition. Firmware is latest, but it also happened with the
earlier firmware.

[Elecraft] BetaFirmware-download, the easy way

2009-11-21 Thread DM4iM
Hello,
this is for the users of Firefox, it describes an easy and fast way to
download the Beta-Firmware from the elecraft-server using FTP.
After installation of FireFTP, an ADDON for Firefox, the latest beta is
only a few clicks away.

Start Firefox, click on the button that is situated between BOOKMARKS
and HELP. The German version says EXTRAS here, other languages may
differ. Click on ADDONS to open the list of your installed ADDONS.
Click DOWNLOAD ADDONS, then VIEW ALL ADDONS. You will be directed to
Mozilla's Addons-page.
On the left, you will see a list of categories, click on the 3rd from
the top, it reads DOWNLOAD Administration. On the next page, locate
FireFTP, click ADD TO FIREFOX. The Addon will be downloaded, you will be
prompted to allow installation. Click INSTALL. Restart firefox.

Now, under EXTRAS, you will find FireFTP. Click on it.
A new TAB will open. Click CREATE ACCOUNT, enter an account name and a
category name, e.g. Elecraft Firmware. Enter ftp.elecraft.com as the
host. Username and password are not required, click on ANONYMOUS.
Click CONNECTION, enter your local folder where you store new firmware
you intend to upload to your K3. Or select it by browsing to it and
click USE CURRENT.

As the remote folder, enter K3/firmware/beta .

Click OK. You're done.

If you want to download a new beta in future, just start firefox, click
FireFTP, then CONNECT. FireFTP connects to the Elecraft FTP-server, you
will see the latest beta-firmware, e.g. k3fw3rxx.zip.
Drag and drop it to your local folder, Fire FTP will download it.
Right-click on the downloaded file, select OPEN and expand it to your
firmware-folder . Close Firefox and start K3-Utility.
Voila.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SWR Accuracy - reprise

2009-11-04 Thread DM4iM
I don't have the KAT3, i use an external homemade tuner and a cheap
swr-meter between it and the K3. Don't know how accurate the swr-meter
is, but i notice that the K3 shows 1.1:1 while the external meter still
reads worse. Fiddling with the controls of the tuner settles the needle
on the external meter, while the readout on the K3's display stays
unchanged.
I posted this to the list some weeks ago, but nobody noticed.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SWR Accuracy - reprise

2009-11-04 Thread DM4iM
I was using 4 Watts, the external bridge is a taiwan-made AV-20, I
forgot the brand name. There is a sticker, it says accuracy 10%.

Today I tested again using 10 Watts, the K3's and the external meters
readout match a lot closer.
With 10 W i can bring the K3s readout to 1.0:1 , with 4 W it was never
better than 1.1:1.

At 100 Watts , both meters agree in the range from 1.0:1 up to about 3:1.
That is good enough for me.

I don't care much about a perfect swr, but the components in the tuner
*do* care when the K3 drives the Alpha. It should not be too bad then.

:-)

Wayne Burdick schrieb:
What power level were you using? And what type of external bridge?

The K3's SWR bridge has two sensitivity ranges. If you have power set to
12 W or lower, the higher-sensitivity range is used. If you have power
set above 12 W, the lower-sensitivity range is used. This is necessary
to prevent heating of the transformers in the bridge.

SWR accuracy will be best when you're in the upper part of each range.
So, for example, it'll be more accurate at 12 W than 1 W, and more
accurate at 100 W than at 13 W. But accuracy should still be reasonable
even in the lower end of the range.

Your external bridge may have better sensitivity at the particular power
 range you were using.

Elecrafters,

find , after recovering from the CQ-WW, that other testers were very
busy creating and testing macros. Even the Manual has been updated

So the macros i created are already there , slightly different, but
there's no need to invent the wheel again.

I now was thinking of testing the Main/Sub Audio etc, but
i feel that the other testers will outrun me again. :-)

Go Elecrafters!

P.S. I asked Ben, DL7UCX, author of UCX-LOG (Freeware), to implement
buttons in his software to send custom-macros to the transceiver. Let's
see...

[Elecraft] KDVR issue?

2009-10-28 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
can anyone double this:

If you Replay a message, say M1,
tapping the button *twice*, these things happen, depending on how long
you waited for the second tap:

Tap twice fast (1/2 second pause): Message stops, then plays again.
Tap twice with long pause: Messages fully plays, but RX-Audio won't come
on for about 1/2 second after message has finished.
Let the message play nearly to its end, then tap: RX-Audio won't come on
for even longer (felt like this).

 1 loop for 80m (local)
 1 GAP Voyager for 160/80/40
1 shunt fed tower for 160

 Subject: [Elecraft] Feature request

What do you elecrafters think about this:

 1. When you are running SPLIT ( assuming RIT XIT are OFF), tapping CLR
puts the RX-VFO to the same frequency as the TX-VFO (TX). No one would
run SPLIT and use RIT and/or XIT simultaneously, would you?

 2. Or, even better: When you are running SPLIT, tapping CLR puts your
 RX-VFO a (config)-selectable number of +- khz (starting with 0 khz = no
SPLIT) offset to your TX-VFO. This ensures that DXPeditioners or
Contesters easily can return to their announced qsx-freq.

Sorry for the bandwidth if there is already a method to accomplish this
in a similar way. I must have missed it then.

[Elecraft] SWR-Meter acurracy?

2009-08-12 Thread DM4iM
Elecrafters,
please comment on this.
Is there a way to calibrate the SWR-Meter?
I have a K3 w/o internal Tuner. With a Dummy connected, the SWR readout
never is better than 1.1 : 1.
Not that this makes any difference but i have seen a readout of 1.0 : 1
on a second K3, also w/o internal tuner.
With an external SWR meter connected, while matching my dipole with my
homemade tuner, the K3 shows 1.1:1 long before the needle on the
external swr-meter settles. In other words, the internal Meter shows
good swr, the external meter shows that it is possible to set it even a
little better.
I ask for your input on this because i run a tube amp and Tuner. The
lowest swr possible helps the tuner amp to stay cool -and the owner.
The external Meter is hooked between the K3 and the amp.

[Elecraft] K3: sub-rx won't work

2009-04-06 Thread DM4iM
Guys, i still could not solve the problem with the sub-rx.
Over the weekend i opened the K3 and checked all TMP-cables,
they are in their correct places.
The pins of the sub-out and the sub-in board are correctly mated with
their sockets.
The Aux-DSP ist seated correctly etc etc..
In short, to me everything looks fine.
I carefully read the manual in order not to make any mistakes with the
antenna-connections and/or the selections of the antenna inputs.

The sub-rx *will not work*.

I have :

Noise , but no band noise.
Faint signals, but this might be a leakage from the main-rx.
A 2.8khz 400hz filter in position FL 2 3 , so even if i counted the
positions backwards , one of them should work.

So, what can i do? Can i swap some connections to pin down the defective
board?

[Elecraft] [K3] Sub-rx wont work

2009-04-04 Thread DM4iM
Guys, the Main-RX and TX of K3 #2878 are up and running, thanks to the
hints from Markus and Chen.

But not the sub-rx.

All plugs mated
Checked the tmp-cables
Performed the calibration
No err-msgs
Sub-RX in config-menu set to *yes, installed*
ant = bnc

no receive, only noise like there is no antenna connected,
noise characteristics change with selected filter (Bandwith/shift)

Faint signals from *strong* stations.

Signals from my K2 sound ok when i transmit into a dummy load and
receive them with the K3 sub-rx.

So the sub-rx is not dead, but deaf.

The K3 has sub-rx, KXV3, equal filters ssb/cw on both rx's , *no* KAT3.

Where to begin the troubleshooting?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Sub-rx wont work

2009-04-04 Thread DM4iM
Guys, thank you for all the input.
Here's the setup

Config: KRX3 Ant=bnc ( I have no ATU)

2-way antenna switch, 1st. cable to ANT1, 2nd cable to AUX

A: Switch in position ANT1 and MAIN selected: Main RX ok, sub rx a *lot*
weaker.

B: Switch in position AUX and AUX selected: sub-rx a little better than
before due to the 3-db increase because the antenna now is not shared
with main rx.

C: I also hooked the 2nd cable to RX-IN and selected RX-Ant, but same
performance as B.

What am i missing?

 Martin

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] no sound from speaker, no rx

2009-04-03 Thread DM4iM
Chen, Markus,
thank you for the quick response.

In the config menu, i set SUB-RX ON (or whatever the parameter is),
switched off the radio and back on.

Sound!

Wew! I think this should be worth a note in the assembly manual,
it really makes you sweat!
Or maybe it is there and i just did not see it, it was late.

[Elecraft] K3 : no sound from speaker, no rx

2009-04-02 Thread DM4iM
Guys, i just completed the initial test and calibration.
I hear no sound from the speaker or headphone, the rx shows no s-meter
action when i transmit a signal with an other tx.
There are no ERR-Messages.

The radio ist equipped with the Transverter-Interface, I still have to
install the Sub-RX and KPA100.

Maybe this behavior is normal until everything is installed? Should i
proceed assembling or troubeleshoot now?

Going to bed now, it is 01:16 local.

Re: [Elecraft] KIO2 connect to Ubuntu Linuxl

2008-12-26 Thread DM4iM
Install Serial Port Terminal , this software can setup your serial
ports using a GUI. It also features a terminal.

If you intend to use the commandline,

install a programm to communicate with the ports:

sudo apt-get install setserial

then tryman setserial

[Elecraft] K3: Rx dead, need help. More details

2008-12-21 Thread DM4iM
The K3 shows no reaction on changing the volume or rf-gain, but it shows
reaction on changing the bandwidth etc. I can hear a test signal from a
transmitter, with no antenna connected to the K3. The signal i hear does
not change when increasing power, no s-meter deflection. So i assume the
rx itself is ok, but the received signal is not amplified by the stages
after the rx.
Also, the K3 fails to transmit.

Any comments?

[Elecraft] K3: RX dead, need help

2008-12-20 Thread DM4iM
Guys, i need your advice. At our Clubstation, while i was on 40m with
the K3 and a Dipole, another guy transmitted with the 2nd setup, a
TS-850 / TL 922 / vertical-ant on 80m.
I saw a HI RFI flashing and the rx went deaf. Resetting the K3 did not
help, also shorting out the gas-discharge diode on the KANT3-board.
The RX sounds like there is no antenna connected, there is noise, but no
signals. Help!
