Re: [Elecraft] Big Knob Fail

2021-02-17 Thread exbpi
Kent,

I completely agree...I have had the CNC knobs on my K3 since purchased with no
issue and tuning is a delight. I have the same knobs on all my S-Line equipment
+ my 75A4 and a custom knob made for my Racal RA6790GM which has the smoothest
tuning of any receiver I have owned (and I've had quite a few).

K3 serial number 21 (kit no. 1) has carried the 73cnc weighted knobs on both
the main and sub VFOs for more than 13 years of nearly nightly use. It has
been the primary CW rig for 11 Field Days, numerous special events, and upwards
of a dozen Boy Scout outings. The knobs have been twirled by club members with
heavy fists and kids with youthful exuberance. Yet they continue to provide
the smooth and silky feel characteristic of those weighted knobs used in high
end receivers for nearly 100 years.

If the tuning shafts and encoders are in imminent danger of “angular momentum
and torque” leading to premature wear, my K3 didn’t get the memo.

Such concerns about non-Elecraft accessories are usually conjectural in my
opinion, if not plain nonsense.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] KAT3 not functioning on 6m

2020-09-06 Thread exbpi
Bill,

Why are you running split in WSJT? The only time you actually need split is
when operating 2 different frequencies like working JA's on 160 when they used
to be required to transmit on 1908 KHz and we transmitted on 1840 kHZ (they now
can operate on 1840). Unless you are actually needing to receive on one
frequency and transmit on another, set the radio configuration to "Fake It"
instead of "split". That will keep your transmit frequency in the middle of
your transmit bandpass. There is no actual frequency change in WSJT including
DX expedition mode.

OK, I figured this out, sort of.

Every time I’ve had trouble with the KAT3 not tuning, the K3 has been in split
mode.

By taking the K3 out of split mode, I’m able to turn on 6m correctly.

Oddly, though, when I return to split mode, it still works.

I’m not sure why I see this issue, but I’m glad I can work around it.

Split mode is often configured due to the WSJT-X settings, depending on the
frequencies used.

HI all…

My K3 suffered some EMP damage from a recent T storm… I’ve found L4 on the KIO3
remote IO board open with evidence of heating on it….not sure what else may
have been nuked.

If I turn on the radio with the KIO3 in the radio boots up but then switches
between TX and RX about 1/ sec … everything else seems normal.
If I try to connect via RS232 it just goes into TX …

If I pull the board all appears functionally normal.

Has anyone experienced this similar issue when the IO gets damaged?

Does anyone have a spare KIO3 board that they may have pulled and saved when
upgrading to the USB IO set up, or any suggestions as to what else may be
damaged , like U1 ?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the update.

So, this is the LED board on the amp, not the power supply? Guess we don't
know at what serial number the change was made?

Subject: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Power Supply Fan Noise

Hello, all and Happy Field Day. Say I just wanted to comment about Elecraft
service and the help they provided me to make a mod to my KPA1500. My
KPA1500 power supply fan was rather noisy. I had seen discussion on the
reflector about this so I contacted Doug at Elecraft service. He ask if I
could solder. I informed him I could and he sent me a new 22 ohm, 3 watt
resistor and i swapped it out with the 10 ohm, 3 watt resistor on the LED
board of the power supply. I am much pleased with the sound of the power
supply fan now after the modification. My amp is an early serial number and
the new amps come with the 22 ohm resistor on the LED board. So...if your
power supply is a bit noisy you might consider this mod and contact Doug at
Elecraft Service. The Elecraft part number of the resistor is E500128. 73,
Steve W0SZ.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 fan mod done - MUCH better

2020-06-05 Thread exbpi
Dave,

So, are these mods documented somewhere on the Elecraft site? I have been
unable to locate them. Further, I can't even get Elecraft to respond about when
they will provide schematics for the KPA1500.

Thanks

Yeah PSU fan noise is on par with the fans in the Flex 6700 now. PC is almost
completely silent. Thinking of locating the amp, radio, and 4O3A 2x8 antenna
switch in my garage in a half height server cabinet. Then I could hear myself
think, but maybe I don’t want to hear myself ;-)

The two chip resistor mod on filter board was fun. I have experience with
surface mount rework so no big deal. One resistor was the size of “16” onthe
date on a penny (2016).

Other mods - they installed zener diodes tonthe gates on the LDMOS devices to
protect against overdrive. That is one thing the LDMOS devices do not like.

Mybamp uses a pair of NXP 1K50H devices which I feel are more rugged than
BLF188 and 189s. I heard early amps used the 188s but no proof of that.

Have fun!
