Rich Text Format (.rtf) is pretty much universal, can be opened (and

have a macro facility, it doesn't carry malware.

Or must the USB be always connected?

You'd only need to connect the USB cable if you were using the K-Pod Utility
app to update your pod's firmware or change its switch behavior.

On the other hand, with future firmware (not committing to anything, yet!) the
K-Pod should be able to emulate a mouse, keyboard, or some combination of these
via its USB port. So you could use it as a general-purpose input device to
control software applications.

Hello,

I have been using a wattmeter from Fox for powers under 1 Watt, but
the display is too nervous and hard to read. So I stumbled over the
Elecraft W2 and read that with the 200 W sensor, you can read also
power levels under 2 Watt. This would be really helpful for I
experiment with power levels down to 0.5 mW.

So before I invest, let me just ask some questions:

1. Has someone compared the power indicatores for the levels of 100 -
1000 mW with a precise wattmeter? As far as I understood each led
signifies 100 mW.

2. If I would use the computer readout: How precise is the output?
Just 100 mW or ist it e.g. 147 mW?

3. I am working max. 10 Watt with the Kx3, but normally use only
between 100 mW and 5 W max. Could I adjust with the calibration of
active sensor down to let's say 1 Watt instead of 2 Watt?

4. Is it possible to modify the transformer T1 and T2 of the sensor so
that the range would be (20W - 2 W and 200 mW. Or is there a sensor
like this available on request from Elecraft.

I know a lot of questions, but as far as I can see this meter would be
a real champion for QRPP and could be used with a WSPR TRX.

This has to be one the very best accessories ever made for a radio. After
seeing the KX3, I thought it could become the ONE radio Ecomm groups could
standardize on if it were hardened in some way.

Scott, AK6Q, did it. His website is www.gemsproducts.com

In typical ham style, I didn't read the instructions. I simply loosened the
four thumb turn screws, removed the 4 small Phillips screws, took the nut
off the mic connector, and replaced the panels. It took just a few minutes.
After reading the instructions, I see I did it all wrong, but still with a
good result. I never opened the radio.

Turns out there is a way to decode the confirmation number. W7CF figured it
out. See below.

For those who haven't noticed, the confirmation number does indeed encode
the date time when the confirmation was issued. I plugged some
confirmation numbers into a excel worksheet and started to play with it.
Yeah, out of desperation while I wait for my KX3, I started to pattern
match... :-)

The first 8 numbers encode the days minutes of the confirmation, and in
good Unix tradition the zero order time is 1/1/1970

To convert, use the following formula (interesting how identical Excel and
googleDocs formulas are...):
=( VALUE(LEFT(B1,4))*1 + VALUE(MID(B1,6,4)) ) / (60*24) + 25569

For the curious, 25569 is the number of days between 1/1/1970 and 1/1/1900,
the latter is the zero date for Excel.
Place confirmation numbers into a spreadsheet, e.g. into column B and add
the following formula to the next column C. Now format the column C Date
time and you'd get the readout below.

A B C
factory: 2208-4637-9147 12/28/2011 13:17:00
kits: 2208-4064-4730 12/28/2011 3:44:00

Confirmation numbers are from today's (5/22) status page update, column C
shows the actual order times calculated with above formula.

I have not figured out the decoding process for the KX3 as they are being

how that correlates to the numbers being posted on the website other than a
smaller number is earlier.

 KX3-F 2208-4685-4272

 KX3-K2208-4068-6852

I revised my order to go with the factory version on Jan. 18th, long
before any KX3s were shipped. I'm wondering how that factors in? The order
number remained the same but it was now for a KX3-F.

 Any cryptologists out there? :-)

Re: [Elecraft] need advice on rig

2010-08-20 Thread kk5na
Hi Susan,

I love my K3 and it may be worth you trying a little longer to get used
too.

And if I were going to step down in quality to me the next best rig
is the Elecraft K2...not as complicated but a great CW rig.

It is just too darned complicated for me. I have never been able to get it
to give the same background noise for cw as it gives for ssb.

I think I want to get rid of it.

Can anyone advise me of a rig, same price range, for me to purchase?

Are any of you guys driving your K3 with W2IHY or
  other audio rack
gear?

Why bother? The K3 already provides all of the
  capability of the
W2IHY 8 band EQ/noise gate, adds downward expansion in the
  noise
gate and there is no issue with external hum loops, RF
  pick-up, etc.

I'm still waiting for my K3 to get back from the
  factory, but I plan
on running the full stack of W2IHY gear with a Heil
  GM-5 Mic.

I've used wide range (broadcast style) mics and the Heil
  HC-5 element
with the K3's internal EQ and find that configuring the K3
  for a 6 dB
per octave roll off below 400 Hz (50 Hz: -16dB, 100 Hz:
  -12dB, 200 Hz:
-6 dB), a -6dB notch at 800 Hz and 6 dB per octave rise
  above 1000 Hz
  (1600 Hz: +6dB, 2400 Hz: +10dB, 3200 Hz: +12dB) yields
  extremely good
audio reports with the broadcast mic and a lot of
  presence without
the restricted sound on the HC-5.

Coupled with CMP at 25, this provides plenty of punch
  without
sounding over processed and all highs like the HC-4.

Who uses the Elecraft hand mic? I do and mic gain
has to be set low; i.e.
around 8 or 9 to prevent clipping and flat
topping as viewed on a monitor
scope. This is with mic sensitivity set to
low in the menu. I was once
told that the hand mics are a tad hot, but mine
  seems to be excessively so.

Regardless, my comp is set to 15 or 20 and I get
  excellent audio reports.

I use the Heil MD2 microphone which has an
  electret element. I have both
compression and mic gain set to 25, and mic set to
  front panel low with
   bias.

I have far more 'talk power' than I have enjoyed

After using mostly these rigs for SSB

comparing this rig to our radios we

  observing the wattmeter needle
is not a very scientific measurement (we
  admit it), various comparative
