[Elecraft] Good Natured Contesting Advice
>"When answering a CQ, send ONLY your call, and never repeat anything that the other station copied correctly. For example, if he sent your call correctly when he responded to you, don't repeat your call when sending your exchange." As I read the rules of the contest, sending your call is *required* as part of the exchange. >"And when you're the caller, never send the other station's call unless there's confusion about who's working who." Yes, I read that in the QST write-up, but. Sending the other station's call confirms that you have copied his call correctly. 73, Charlie, N0TT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] K3 doesn't receive at power up
Greetings from Missouri Guys...I have a K3 which has been very reliable for years, but now it has a problem. At "power-up" from a cold start, it doesn't receive. I do get audio. It acts like no antenna is connected. If I power-down, then power-up again everything appears to be normal, at least for awhile. The power supply is okay. Once, recently, when the radio was warm, I had a no-receive problem that occured when I switched bands. My P3 would display a "large" signal that would not tune. Has anyone experienced similar problems and what generally was done to repair it? [Elecraft] No receive upon power-up
Just before a contest this weekend I turn on my K3 and heard no signals on any band! Power was okay, antenna connected, etc. Longer story, shortened I switched off the K3 then powered up againthen all was well... everything working normally. This has never happened before here. Has this happened to anyone else? 73, Charlie, N0TT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] OT: High school drafting class
OK, so I gotta chime in and tell this brief story Circa 1958, HS mechanical drawing class. Some kid was screwing off. Distruptive! Mr Gersic, went back to the kid, picked him up off his stool by the seat of his pants/belt with one hand, the other on his shoulder, and carried him out door. Never saw the kid in class again!! :D) Charlie, N0TT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Resistor and capacitor installation
Back in the early 80's, a friend of mine had a job-related subscription to "NASA Tech Briefs" (or something like that title). I never read the article myself, but my friend was very good at relaying details. One of the subjects covered was soldering and the "shock wave" problem. IIRC, the leads could be trimmed with a scissor-like tool. I would think the nippers that someone mentioned would be OK to use because of the way the cutting edge is designed. I tried to find the Tech Briefs on the web, but no luck. If anyone has access to those publications I would sure like to read the article. Again, that was back in the early 80's or maybe late 70's. 73, Charlie, N0TT >Sorry but cutting wires after soldering is "bad practice"; NASA wanted the soldered connection left undisturbed. >If I ever saw an assembler or tech doing that "bad practice", they'd get a verbal warning that first time and a written warning if >it ever happened again; but I had good, conscientious people and never had to do that. >So, tin the wires if needed; position the part and then trim wires before doing the final soldering. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Vacuum Relays and 30 WPM QSK

All of them came to me used, and I've replaced those relays in each amp at least once. After a few rounds of that, I stopped running QSK with those amps. :) I'd like to hear from others having experience with vacuum relays and QSK at contesting speeds. I mostly work between 28 and 32 WPM. The original equipment relays were Jennings, and I've mostly used Gigavac as replacements. I haven't had to replace one since giving up on QSK about 8 years ago, but I really would like to run QSK. Have I made the right decision to avoid it when running with a vacuum relay? 73, Jim K9YC --- Hi Gents, The "secrete" to running QSK with an amplifier is proper sequencing of whatever keying is used...relays or PINs. I still have, and use, my old Alpha 86 which uses PIN diodes, but it is set up to be keyed *first*. When the Alpha is ready to transmit, *then* the keying signal is passed on to my K3 or whatever radio I have connected to it. If I just key a radio first, without the amplifier being set up, the amp will "trip out" and announce that it had a "T-R" fault. Keying a radio ("exciter"), then keying a amp, will cause hot-switching unless there is a built-in delay of RF from the radio. 73, Charlie, N0TT __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] Too many tuning knobs
Guys, To keep things simple and less prone to transmitting on the wrong VFO, I listen to the DX station using the MAIN VFO A, then turn on the XIT function and turn the little freq control knob to where your want to TRANSMIT, up 2 or whatever. As a bonus, I can check my *proposed* TRANSMIT frequency by pushing the RIT function...of course turning the RIT OFF after checking my *proposed transmit freq. No need to mess with the VFO B. Hope I 'splained that clear unuf! :D) 73, Charlie, N0TT Like Don, N5LZ, I've been playing in the K1N 15M pileup. However, I don't have a KRX3, so I'm using the REV button to listen to the pileup. My user interface problem comes from having the tuning knob for VFO B switch from the medium size knob to the big knob when I press REV. I have the little knob -- RIT/XIT -- set for fast tuning, so I have 3 tuning knobs, not counting the QSY knob/button on the P3. Since I'm running with VFO A locked, to avoid losing K1N by brushing a tuning knob, there is really only one VFO that can be tuned. However the cognitive load of switching tuning knobs when I press REV is a bit more than my feeble brain can handle. Does anyone have a work around, or should I ask Elecraft to change the tuning implementation in some way. One way that might work is to always have the big knob tune VFO A and the medium tune VFO B, even if REV is being held. Another would be to have the fact that VFO A is locked change all three knobs tune VFO B, which would allow high-speed tuning. I guess I have to up the priority of the KRX3, But I also need the KAT3 and the KDVR3 and a bunch of other stuff that's better to put in first. HIHI What's a poor ham to do?
