[Elecraft] [K2] Has the k2 a future - not if you use Li-Po cells!

2009-10-20 Thread Greg Williams
Hi Guys
I have a mate, Ian VK3FFLY, who is into flying radio controlled models
using Li-Po cells and they are very careful about the way they charge
them - always in a metal box (not the radio cabinet!). Several of them
have had fires from charging these cells. Ian suggests you have a look
at http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209187

Ian's son-in-law had a house fire in the last couple of months from a
charging Li-Po - luckily he was home and the smoke alarm worked so he
just had damage to the one room.

Johnny,
Do you have pictures posted? I remember when you started this project and
I'd like to see how it worked out.

Presonally I lean more toward LiFePO4; although they have a lower energy
density than the Li-Po (though higher power density) they reportedly are
safer in conditions of over/under charge and mechanical stress.

 Hello Wayne,

Yes, K2 is still my favourite field day and QRP rig and no others can bit
 it.

 I now have 3 x 3.7v 3300mAH Li-Po cells in the KBT2 and they work very
 well.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] Has the k2 a future - not if you use Li-Po cells!

2009-10-20 Thread AD6XY

This is why I eventually decided to use AA NiMH cells instead when replacing
the lead acid battery in my K2.

I use 10 AAs in a pack, this gives me 2.5AH vs ~3AH for a small LiPo pack of
similar mass. The LiPOs are fine but I will keep them outside the case so I
can throw them somewhere if a fault occurs. I am sure computer packs are
fine but I am wary of the RC type packs. The advantage of NiMH is they are
easy to charge. They may fail faster but they are very cheap to replace.

Why didn't Elecraft choose NiMH cells for the KBT2 in the first place? There
must have been a reason.

There must have been a reason.

One reason might be self discharge; SLA stay charged longer than NiMH.
There are new longer-life NiMH cells these days, though. And the LiFePO4
and Lithium nano-phosphate cells as well.

Hi Bill

Yes it will be manufactured by Telefunken, it was the talk of the town at
Friedrichshafen 2009.

Telefunken Racoms will be producing the Hilberling transceiver.
Its splattered all over web.

Re: [Elecraft] [K2] has the k2 a future?

2009-10-14 Thread OE5CSP-Chris

The K2 is a very mature product, and I don't anticipate adding further
internal modules to it. I've thought about a Li-Ion battery as a
replacement for the present gel-cell, but it's still too expensive and
is thus left as an exercise for the reader.

The P3 should work with the K2, though less tightly integrated than
with the K3. If that pans out, we'll post details later.

We have no plans to phase out the K2, which is still going strong
after 10 years (for which we thank our customers!).

I´m still very happy with my K2 and when I bought the K3 I thought, that I´d
have to sell one of my other rigs.In fact, I don´t want to sell one of them
and I´ll certainly keep the K2. If the NB is redesigned, this rig will
almost be perfect for my needs.(the K3 and IC 761 have got much better noise
blankers!)

I don't think most people looking at the K2 are that concerned about state
of the art performance. The K2's main qualities are small size, low weight
and low power consumption which make it an ideal portable radio. It is
superior in many respects to the many small mobile/portable rigs like the
IC706 series, FT-897 etc. that many hams on a budget use as base stations,
which performance limitations in many respects worse than the K2. For many
years at the start of this decade people used to say what a great receiver
the K2 had. I don't think the phase noise limitations, whatever they are,
are such a big deal for most prospective users. For those it does matter to,
there is the K3.

I would be more interested in a K3-Junior

What you listed there looks more like a spec of a K4 to me.

[Elecraft] [K2] has the k2 a future?

2009-10-13 Thread Michael van Hauten
Dear elecraft -team,
during the last 2 years all new modules and software updates had been designed
for the K3. Is the K2 out of the focus or is there a chance for all the K2
users to get new modules and upgrades in the future ?

The K2 fills a unique role, and it's the only full function transceiver you
can build from through hole components (its only rival is the JUMA TRX2 from
Finland which is made with SMT and it is more money for less functionality.)

Although you don't anticipate adding more modules to it there might be a
demand for an official version of the last digital interface board that was
designed by the late Pauli Nunez EA3BLQ. Since a Li-Ion battery option isn't
on the cards I suppose I'd better start thinking about replacing my old
gel-cell - 10 years old and still holding a charge. Is this a record?

Yes, I'd be in for one of these. Perhaps Elecraft could produce and
sell them, donating a portion of the profit to Pauli's family or a
charity of their choice?
