Re: [Elecraft] Bug simulator

2006-01-31 Thread Rick Dettinger
I tried this several years ago. It worked for a while, but at times it went
into keyer mode. Don't remember exactly what I got, or why, but I couldn't
use it. I havn't had trouble switching from bug to keyer because the bug
has a much heavier action and that acts as a "tell" to get me in the correct
mode. I now think that I would have trouble using a keyer in semiauto mode.
I would have to set it up like a bug with respect to tension and gap. These
days, I only use my paddles portable, as the Vibroplex Original is a little
heavy to travel with. My hand keys tend to be on the large size also.

Don and all,

Yes, that is possible electrically, and it will work, BUT - it will drive
you nuts unless you have perfect timing with the dashes with respect to the
start and end of the automatically generated dits - I have tried it with
several keyers including the K2 just for fun. Mechanical bugs seem to be
more forgiving for me (or maybe it is the tactle feedback that I miss), but
it is certainly easy to try it and see what your results will be - you do
not even have to open up the K2.

I've never tried this sort of thing, although some other keyers have an
explictly selectable 'bug mode'. However, I doubt that it would sound
like a real mechanical bug properly used. I think the rhythm that is so
pleasing in good bug sending comes from the interaction of the sender's
fingers with the massive lever swinging back and forth over a large
distance and against strong spring tension (all of the above relative to
a keyer paddle, of course). Bug sending is more than just manually made
dashes.

If you slap it, it should [work like a bug]. If you squeeze, all bets are
off. Element insertion, and all that.

VERY interesting idea, tho. Someone should try this and report back. (I
can't - I have no idea how a bug should act). I've squeezed since before my
first license (N4GMN, a Technician if I recall, I lost the log and it's been
a couple of years).

make the K2 keyer work like a bug.

It seems you should be able to do this using the auto hand key mode and a
diode from the dah line to the dit line. With this wiring keying a dah would
work like a hand key and you could hold the key as
long as you want but when you key a dit the diode would disconnect the dah
contact and the dit contact would work normally.

[Elecraft] Bug simulator

2006-01-31 Thread Don Brown
Hi

A few days ago someone was asking about a firmware change to make the K2
keyer work like a bug. It seems you should be able to do this using the auto
hand key mode and a diode from the dah line to the dit line. With this
wiring keying a dah would work like a hand key and you could hold the key as
long as you want but when you key a dit the diode would disconnect the dah
contact and the dit contact would work normally. This should make the K2
keyer work exactly like a bug. Just a thought. I have not tried it but it
looks like it would work.
